Editing Underlying Boolean Data Without Making Cells Editable
Oct 5, 2007
I'm having a real hard time coming up with a solution to this problem. I created a custom gridview control from Dino Esposito's "Extending Gridview" article which autogenerates a checkbox column that allows for multiple record selection. Once a user checks a box, the entire row gets selected. I added a dropdown list on the top of the page that has only two options, "Yes" or "No". What I'm trying to do is update a boolean column called "contract" (I'm using the Pubs sample database) for all selected rows (via checkboxes checked) depending on whether the user selects "Yes" or "No" from the drop down menu.
For example,
1) the user selects "No" in the dropdown
2) The user checks all rows in the checkbox column for which he wants the all the values"contract" field set to "No"
3) The user then clicks on a button called "Submit" and all selected records get updated to "No" under the "contracts" column.
The idea is to allow the user to change the boolean values from a field for multiple records. Hence, making individual cells editable is pointless. Anybody have an idea how to go about this?
I try to find the way to create editable data grid (a view from MySQL database) in a web page. So, user can edit, add, or delete from one page instead of having switch edit, insert pages, one field in the view only. Any script I need to write or any special server behavior I can use?
I don't know if there is a fundamental problem with what I am trying to do, or am I just having problems setting it up correctly:
I have a SQL server multi-user database. I want my users to connect to this databsase via Access 2000 Data Project. No problem there. The database consists of one main table and several views (based on the office branch that the user works from). For example there is a Chicago view, an Atlanta view, etc. that all extract different records from the same underlying table. I need my users to have FULL ACCESS (select, update, delete) to their respective VIEWS, but they cannot have access to the underlying table. I've tried several configurations and I'm beginning to think that this may not be possible... is that the case?
If it is not possible to grant access to views but not the underlying table, then what are my other options? The objective is to have a multi-user table that each user "owns a piece of" without being able to see the tables or records belonging to their peers. Do I need to setup a table for every office, and somehow link those tables into one main table? How would I avoid duplicate records being entered into the separate tables? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as this problem has had me stumped for weeks.
I have 2 data sources that have recently been updated from SQL Express to full versions of 2005. The connection strings have been changed, and the changes appear in the code, but the data source designer still shows the SQLExpress portion of the connection string. This seems to be fouling up SSIS packages that are using these data sources. Has anyone else encountered this? If so, what can I do to fix this issue?
I am trying to develop a cube with translated calculated measures in it. I have also translated the all underlying measures/dimensions being used in action for a header.
I can see my translated measures and dimension in excel but when I go to Underlying data, I see default member's names not the translated one. Please note that I have translated all underlying members.

Tools: SQL Server 2K, Excel 2000Hi,I have an Excel report worksheet with formatted headings. What I wantto do is to export data from the SQL server into a specific cell of theexcel file. Is this doable? Can somebody give me some direction on howto accomplish this?I appreciate any suggestions.Edgar J.
Obviously, I'm new to SQL Server, because I'm still scratching my head wondering where in the world the boolean data type is. Can anyone please explain to me how boolean data types REALLY work in SQL Server? I've created a few Bit type fields, but when using a datagrid, they sometimes show up as 0 and 1 and sometimes as True/False, and I can't see a difference in how the grids (or fields(!)) are set up that would explain this. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
What data type should I use as a replacement of Boolean in SQL server? I need to create a table column with a "two-state" data type and must ensure, that only one record can hold value "True" in this column... Any ideas? Thanks
I know this is a stupid question, but I've searched and can't seem to find it.
What do you use in SQL when creating a table and the field is a "yes/no" type field? In VB isn't that a boolean data type? What is the corresponding SQL data type?
My Report consists of a matrix and table . I Kept the matrix inside the table because i need to calculate subgroups total as well as Grand Total using the group i provided inside the table . The issue when i tried to render the report to Excel it shows "Data Regions within table/matrix cells are ignored." I dont know how to solve it . When i google it . It says that its a Microsoft SSRS limitation . Anyway i could solve it any help will be appreciated

Hello, I am trying to use a boolean parameter to filter data in a table, but there is something I am missing.
Basically I want something like this: I have a boolean parameter, "EP", and I have a filter set on my table as:
Expression Operator Value =Fields!REFERRAL_SOURCE.Value = IIF (Parameters!EP.Value, "1297", ????)
Using the filter tab, I can't specify an expression for the 'Operator' so I was trying to work it out using either '=' or 'like'. What needs to go into the ???? in order for the referral source to be "not 1297" (i.e. the inverse of the filter)?
Or, am I completely missing an easy way to do this?
I want to get (SELECT??) data from a db (SQL), edit the data (+1) and then update (UPDATE??) the table with the edited value. How do I get the value from the db and then edit it and then update the field in the db?? Does someone has an example so I get on the way??
When we try to export to excel a SQL client report containing tables that were grouped based on some data in two tables of a dataset I am receiving the following error
"Data Regions within table/matrix cells are ignored".
I want to make data changes in read_only database , that's why i must set database read_write. While database is at read_write mode, i want to be sure that no one makes change in database.
For this aim, i write the code below, but i suspect that after setting the database read_write, till the setting database single_user ,is it possible get DML script from another user. Is the code below enough for this operation. Or is there another way?
Reminding: Read_only database can not be set single_user mode. That's why, first you must set database read_write.
The code;
use master alter database xxx set read_write with rollback immediate alter database xxx set single_user with rollback immediate
use xxx update tablexxx set columnxxx=yyy use master alter database xxx set read_only with rollback immediate alter database xxx set multi_user with rollback immediate
For prototyping purposes, is there a tool that reads a database's schema and generates (simple) table editor that allows manual editing of data. It would be good if the tool somehow made it easy to add foreign key values to reference data e.g. gender, status, ...I can kind of do this using Management Studios "Edit Top 200 Rows", but I was wondering if there is a more user friendly tool out there.
I use the SQL Compact Edition 3.1 as database for a desktop application. Everything works fine, but is it possible to edit the data (e.g. tables and views) in the SQL Server Management Studio? I can make a connection to the SQL CE database, but I can only edit the objects of a table. The option 'Open Table' as in SQL Server (2005) is not avalible? Does anybody know if it posible to edit the data with the Managementstudio (express)?
I have a report with a column which contains either a string such as "N/A" or a number such as 12. A user exports the report to Excel. In Excel the numbers are formatted as text.
I already tried to set the value as CDbl which returns error for the cells containing a string.
The requirement is to export the column to Excel with the numbers formatted as numbers and the strings such as "N/A' in the same column as string.
Hi All !I open a table in Query Analyzer by right clicking on it andselecting 'Open' and when the data is displayed in the view pane Iwould like to be able to edit it. It seems however that tables markedas read only (as shown on the top bar e.g. SQL Query Analyzer - [OpenTable ServerName.DBName.dbo.TableName(read-only)] ) can not be editedwhereas the one that do not have that attribute infront of the name Ican edit. Is there a way I can change the read only attribute of atable so that I can edit data directly in the view pane? Please let me know if there is !Thanks a heap ! :)Harkirat

I am trying to do this. Basically, if the field I am checking contains a space - not an empty string - I want to assign it an empty string so it will get converted to NULL when it hits the SQL destination. The space character from the source is causing the rows to fail I want to force a NULLin the database as a "workaround" from something I am working on.
I thought I had this set up correctly, but it is not working. I have the field in question as an input field set to ReadWrite
If Row.[COLNAME].ToString = " " Then Row.[COLNAME] = "" End If
I am getting the following error:
[Assign District Code [12469]] Error: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ScriptComponentHost.HandleUserException(Exception e) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ScriptComponentHost.ProcessInput(Int32 inputID, PipelineBuffer buffer) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ManagedComponentHost.HostProcessInput(IDTSManagedComponentWrapper90 wrapper, Int32 inputID, IDTSBuffer90 pDTSBuffer, IntPtr bufferWirePacket)
I have a scenarios where if I execute select * from tbl it should display the all the records without waiting to release any lock. For example suppose I have one table called tbl and one session is updating one records and not committed yet and in other session if i execute select * from table I can see all the records, for that records it can show me older version. but my select statement should not wait to commit another session and also it should not show the modified data.
I have a page for inventory price entry that I have used for a while. Now I need to add a checkbox for whether or not the price includes shipping. I added the checkbox to the form and had it posting 'True' or 'False' to the database as nchar(10) data type. When the gridview pulls up the data, I have the Item Template like this, so it shows a disabled checkbox either checked or not: <asp:CheckBox ID="CheckBox2" runat="server" Checked='<%# Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("Shipping")) %>' Enabled="False" /> This works fine for displaying the values, but I copied the checkbox to the Edit Item Template, but did not disabled this one. At first, I didn't change the databindings, leaving it Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("Shipping")), which allowed me to go into Edit mode, change the checkbox, then click update. At which point it would return to it's original state (meaning Update wasn't actually updating). However if I change the databindings, then the page won't display. I checked the SQL statement, and sure enough, it has theUpdateCommand="UPDATE [PartsTable] ... SET [Shipping] = @Shipping... WHERE [PartID] = @original_PartIDAfter fiddling with the sql statement, now I get Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types. I think that means that the checkbox is sending a null value to the database.Any insight as to how to get this to work is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hi, I think the title explains it all really. I cannot configure the SqlDataSource to add Insert, Update and Delete statements - not through the wizard anyway. The view combines two tables, each containing 3 columns. I have tried using different combinations of columns, and ended up selecting all of them (making sure the foreign key column of the first table was given a different alias to the primary key column of the second table) but I still cannot enable editing. Cheers, Patrick
I have several DTS packages that connect to various Oracle databases. An upgrade has recently been done to one of the databases from 7.3 to 8i. The other databases were always 8i. Last week, I could edit data transer tasks normally, this week, DTS hangs and I have to use task manager to kill the process. It worked fine last week. I can successfully run the packages, I just can't edit them. I have no trouble editing or running packages that connect to databases other than the one recently upgraded. I have tried both OLE DB and ODBC connections with the same results. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
