Enabling Automatic ClickThrough/ Drill Into For Report Builder Reports Against A Model
Apr 4, 2007
Hello - I am having difficulty enabling the automatic click-through functionality for my model. I have two entities - Customer & Incident. Incident is a role/FK/OptionalMany relationship to customer.
I've read through earlier postings on this subject (below) and have verified that the #Incidents attribute in my incident entity has the EnableDrillThrough=true.
My test report is simple - Customer Name (from customer) and #Incidents (from incident). When I run it, the click-through option is not available (the cursor stays as an arrow and doesn't change to a finger).
Are there other properties or settings that I need to be working with? I have SP2 (9.0.3042) installed on our Standard edition of SQL 2005. I know Infinite Click-Through is not in Std edition, but a few levels should be, correct?
I've created dsv that contain all fields from table database. in the smdl I've remove some fileds due to security. All fields in the smdl do not contain drill.
Issue: When I created calculated field in the report builder the field has a link. When I clicked the drill I saw all the record data including field that not in the smdl.
Questions:
1) Can I remove the link from the calculated fields?
2) Can I prevent from users drill to fields that not in the smdl?
I am using Report Builder 3.0 and i have report which has a drill down group. The report opens in a collapsed form. This report has interactive sorting on a column. But,when we drill down and sort the column, the group collapses and the details disappear.
In some posts, i have seen that instead of interactive sorting, people recommended a parameter. But i have to do interactive sorting only.
I'm having some difficulty linking a custome drilldown or clickthroug report to another report that I have already created in report builder. I followed a MSDN article found at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345226.aspx but I cannot find the " Select a page area, select Drill-through reports" option in report manager. Does anyone have a better explanation on how to do this? I'm assuming that when you create the clickthrough report there has to some sore of filter on it that relates to the item of the clickthrough. I guess I'm I little confused, any help would be great. Thanks.
Please consider enhancing SQL 2005 Reporting Services to provide the ability to disable Clickthrough Reports (Live Links) at the Report and Export Function level. Today you can only enable or disable Clickthrough Reports at the View/Model Level for all Report Builder reports.
I have a report builder drill down report. I have row groups with totals. It looks like the attached. The problem is when the report is not expanded the Grand Totals column is not accurate... it is displaying the totals of one of the rows when expanded. The expression in the Total Show text box is
I deployed the same report model to 2 different SSRS servers. The report only has 1 field with count of records from 1 table. I can drill down on this column on 1 server, but not on the other server. This column is set to drillabe on the report model.
Is there any SSRS configuration that is stopping me drilling down on it?
I want to use this as the data from which to build a report model. As linked servers don't show up in the Data Source View wizard, I created a view in SQL Server:
create view MyExcel as select * from XL_SPS_1...Sheet1$
Okay, great, now the view shows up in the DSV wizard and I can create the data source view. However, when I create a new report model based on this data source view, the Report Model Wizard tells me at "Create entities for all tables" that I've got an error when it processes dbo_MyExcel that "Table does not have a primary key."
I assume this is where the identifying attributes for the entities in the report model are taken from, so I really can't go further. Does anyone have an idea as to how to add a primary key to a linked server (Excel) in SQL 2005? Can this be done? Other than importing spreadsheet data to a SQL table, how can I get around this?
Is it possible to dynamically refresh the report model of the report builder?
could it even be using code with any of the interfaces?
When we add a table or add a column to the table in database , will the report model get refreshed automatically or do we need to do it externally. If so, can we use any of the objects and write a custom code in VB.
My environment: Computer A - SQL 2005 SP2 (32 bits) - Oracle 9i client I am the local administrator
Server A - Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition (64 bit) I have read only access to Oracle DB.
I am able to create a report model with Oracle DB and deployed it successfully. In my report model (rmOracle), I named my data source: dsOracle and dsvOracle for my data source view which contains one named query. Then I set a logical primary key for the named query, everything is OK so far.
Now, in Report Builder (RB) I have created a simple report (table) based on the report model I created before. Then when I preview it, I got the following error message:
Microsoft Report Builder:
Report execution error The report might not be valid or the server could not process the data.
Details: System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater. ---------------------------- Cannot create a connection to data source 'dataSource1'. ---------------------------- An error has occurred during report processing.
I tried to look more information by saving the report and run it from the report server directly. And I got the following error message:
An error has occurred during report processing. Cannot create a connection to data source 'dataSource1'. System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater.
I open the RDL file and found that when creating a report with RB, it creates its own data source, which is fine. The problem here is that data source points to the wrong connection, which I thought it should point to the same connection of the report model its based on. In this case it should point to Oracle connection (dsOracle).
Anyone has any idea how to solve it? Or did I miss something here?
I have built a data model in visual studio that I am using with report builder in reporting services. The data model is using data from a view in SQL Server 2005. I am trying to apply a filter to the data model to restrict the data available in report builder. I know that I could change the code for the view and filter that data that way, but I would rather creates two models each one producing differnt sets of filtered data. I have tried adding a filter to the data model, but it does not seem to work. Do anyone have any suggestions?
I created a simple report model, which includes both tables and views as a data source view. So here are the problems I am facing when I try to use a report builder to build a report.
1. In the Report Builder window, on the FIELDS column, I am unable to see the primary key column of any of the tables.
2. I am unable to see the VIEWS in the ENTITIES column of the Report Builder; I can see only the tables.
Does anybody has some idea to deal with the above issues?
I have created security roles that restrict access to a certain Dimension and a member therein.
The security works fine when the users finened in it runs a report: The data is accordingley ristricted.
The problem is when those same users run Report Builder and create a report, those members are no longer restricted and they have acces to absoluteley all data from the cubes.
Is there some way that I can force the Data Model to follow the cube's security roles?
Any help is much appreciated...
Gerhard Davids
EDIT: I have found that it uses the wrong user when opening report builder. For some reason it uses my windows account instead of the one I used to log onto report manager. This is way the security isnt working
I get the following error when I try to deploy a report builder model. The SQL Server 2005 "Reporting Services" are installed and running on the local machine.

My reports are not allowing me to "Clickthrough" to more detailed reports.
I want my report to automatically show a detail record when they select some "interactive data" in my reports.
I have read a page on this stuff ( http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345252.aspx ) which states:
In Report Builder, a clickthrough report is a report that provides detailed information about the data contained within the main report. A clickthrough report is displayed when the Report Builder user clicks the interactive data that appears in the main report. These reports are automatically generated by the report server. You, as the model designer, determine what is displayed in clickthrough reports by setting the DefaultDetailAttribute and DefaultAggregateAttribute properties that you assign to an entity in the report model.
Hence, within my report model i have created an entity with a number of DefaultDetailAttributes.
I have not created a specific "click through" report as i would be happy to view the automatically generated report that should contain the attributes defined in the "DefaultDetailAttributes" list.
However, when i view the report, no data items are links (or "interactive data" as the msdn article describe them).
Has anyone got any ideas on how to make the report data interactive?
I am trying to develop a data model that will filter data based on the user logged in. SUSER_SNAME() I have a list of User Id's in a look up table, a where clause in a view that filters the data based on who is logged in. This works fine and the data even seems to be filtered when I explore the data in the Data Source View. How ever when I publish the data model to the reporting services site and use report builder the user logged in is no longer recognized. All I am really trying to do is set up report builder so that users can generate reports and only have access to thier data via a customer number. I just can't allow users to see other users data and I don't want to set up a different datasource view for each user. Does any one have any experience with this?
Here is one scenario. There is Department X which has subdepartments A,B,C,D. A has 5 members and B has some 7 products, C 5 members and D has some 12 members. My problem is I need create a Report model where is if we select X all the list of subdepartments and their members should be displayed. I.e if we select X then A 1
2 3
4 5 B 1 2 3 4 5 C and so on..........every thing should be displayed that are under department, i.e subdepartments under that department and the members under each subdepartment of that Department.
The problem here is all those departments and subdepartments are in same table which has columns like, "DeptId" and "Dept Reporting to" and "EmplID. When we select "Dept Reporting to" = X, we need to get the result as I specified above
Can anyone please help me out to create a Report Model to generate ad hoc reports
I have found that in the autogenerated model attributes are missing for those fields that have relations to other tables. At first, it may look reasonable since a user can still get down to the field's value through the relation/related table. However, if the relation's key fields is the only thing the user wants to display, then going down to the related table is an overkill.
I can add an attribute manually and bind it to the key field(s). Is there an option in the autogeneration process to do it automatically? The only post I've found so far suggests to do everything manually (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1152575&SiteID=1). Is this the only way?
We have a "folder hiriarchy" in reporting services with permission for different users to only create reports in their own folder. However, it would be nice if they (in report builder) could open eachothers reports, modify them and then save them in theri own folder. In this case, if they find a useful report that someone else has created, they could just make their own small modifications and save it in their own folder.
The problem is that I cant't seem to find a securitysetting that allow this. Either they can create/modify/delete the reports in a "folder" or they can't even open them in report builder...
I know that you can build a Report Designer report and add URL navigation from a field. I am trying to figure out how to do this with report BUILDER. I haven't been able to do it using the UI and editing the RDL directly to match what I see in a similar report Designer report is being ignored (if I did it right).
I can put the URL into the DSV & Model as a field/attribute, but displaying the a field with a URL in it doesn't make it "clickable".
Does anyone have a trick for this? Or know that there is definately no way to do it?
I am trying to add a calculated field / column in Report Builder when working with a Report Model built from anAnalysis Services Cube. I can create the calculated Field/Columns, but I get an error whenever I try to use it in a report.
Is there a way to create a report builder calculated column on report models built from a SSAS cube? Is this supported?
I have a stored procedure that takes a date range and returns all the sales in that date range. I'm trying to create the report model for ad-hoc reporting. When I go to create the dataset view, it only lets me select tables or views.... how do I get around this?
I have a development server setup with Report Builder that our users have been testing out. They have a number of reports that they have created on this dev server.
We now have our live environment all setup and I'd like to move their Report Builder reports to the new server for them so they don't have to recreate them.
I have a very simple report model with two tables in it but having millions of rows. I have developed a report on this report model, which will return atleast half million rows.
I have published this report to report server and trying to access the report through the report manager. It never returns the result. Fails with tme out expired error. I have 64 bit machine and 2 GB RAM. The report is expected to return atleast 500 MB data. As per the SSRS documentation it the memory should be three times to process the report. It does not work.
If I develop the same report using the report designer, I get the results returnd within a minute. If I use the above mentioned Report Model as my data source, again I get the results within less than minute.
So what is it the report builder report is doing additional? It is strange that the same report model when used as data source returns the same number of rows within less than minute and the report developed and uploaded to report manager using report builder fails with time out expired error?
What is that the Report builder doing internally? Can I change some configuration for report builder report to work for large reports? I have already changed the memory settings in the report config and machine config files. Your early response is appreciated.
I get a problem when I want to preview a report in Report Builder. I just launch Report Builder by the url [1] (RS is on a server, and I work on a laptop). Then I choose a model and create a simple report. When I press "Run Report", I get an error message saying: "The permissions granted to user 'mydomainmyusername' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)". But my user are assigned to content manager...
If I then save the report to the Report Server, I can access the report through e.g. the Report Manager without any problems.
Why doesn't the preview functionality work for me? Are there some settings I need to set, or is it a bug in Report Builder?
I have created reports in 'Projects'. What I would like to know is that if can transfer these reports into a report model?
As per my knowledge, a report model contains datasources, datasource views, report models itself and doesn't allow to transfer reports. Please , let me know if my understanding is correct?
I need to create letter type reports using the report builder, is this possible?. I am trying to create a letter that embeds some variable fields, i.e,. name, address, contact number. I can't seem to find a way to create page headers, and embed report data fields within text. Is this not possible within the report builder? it seems that the only thing you can do within the report builder is add fields to their predesignated areas. I am being forced to use the report builder instead of the report designer in order to give the end user the ability to make modifications to the report/letter. This is very frustrating. not being able to allow the user to edit report designer files, and then having force them to use report builder which doesn't seem to support some simple features..
I have created some reports using Report Builder however they autorun with default values when selected in report manager, cant think many people would want this to happen. Is there a way of getting rid of the default values in RB or preventing auto execute in RM?
I'm trying to get empty cells from an OLAP cube to display in a report designed using the Report Builder. Of the three report types, only the Table report shows the empty cells. Is there any option/setting that I need to enable to get this to work for the Matrix or Chart reports? Something like the "Show Empty Cells" option that is available in the pivot table used by BI Dev Studio?
Does any body know that creating free form rports using Report Builder is possible?
Free-form report - in the sense - that user should be able to drag the fields from the leftside fields pane and drop on body as we do in report designer using BI studio.
I could not figure out a way to do so. Is this a limitation?
Suposse that some models are deployed in Report Server for a while, and users have developed some ad-hoc reports on them using Report Builder, (some of the models are SSAS Cubes).
Modifications are required for a Model, what is the procedure to deploy this modifications? What happens with ad-hoc reports of this Model? Rewrite all the reports is a VERY BAD option, I agree that some reports must be rewrote, but only if they reference objects no longer valids in new model.
I suposse that the procedure for SSAS Cube Models will be different for a Relational Database Source because metods of generating models are so different. (I am particularly curious about Cubes, I can't figure out how I can do it)
