Encrypting A Whole Database

Oct 22, 2007

I have been tasked with encrypting an entire database, and I need some assistance.
Everything that I have looked at leads me to believe that the only way to encrypt a whole database is to encrypt each column seperatly. I am completely stumped and could really use some help.
Is it possible to encrypt a whole database? if so, how?
If not, what other options do I have?
Thanks in advance for the help.

SQL 2012 :: Encrypting A Column On TDE Enabled Database

Sep 23, 2015

I have a database that is the publisher in transactional replication and also part of an availability group. I have put the pertinent certificates on all of the involved servers, and it is encrypted on all servers and operated as expected. However, we are adding additional security for personal data and we have targeted columns in multiple tables for column encryption. I have a master key and certificates that are stored in the master database. Following an example where I am to create the database master key:

-- Create database Key
USE encrypt_test;
GO
CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'Password123';
GO

But when I try to create a certificate on the database:

-- Create self signed certificate
USE encrypt_test;
GO
CREATE CERTIFICATE Certificate1
WITH SUBJECT = 'Protect Data';
GO

It get the following:
Msg 15151, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot find the certificate 'Certificate1', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.

Can I add a database certificate to an already TDE enabled database and if not to I create the symmetric key through the certificate located on the master database? And how will that effect decrypting the column values in stored procedures and function on the user database?

First Database Complete, Can't Connect!

Nov 22, 2007

Hello all! A while ago I started cataloging my collection of old radio recordings and I wrote a simple Visual Basic 2005 program to display them in a nice UI. I have implemented an SQL database with the project and all is fine, when I run the program it connects to the sql server and downloads the data. But when I try and change something by connecting from within Visual Basic at runtime with this code:

Private Sub Save_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Save.Click
Dim ConnectionString As New SqlConnection("Server=MARK-HOMESQLEXPRESS;Database=Library.mdf;Uid=MARK-HOMEMark;Pwd=sodoff;")
Dim sqlString As String
ConnectionString.Open()
sqlString = "UPDATE JackBenny SET Rating='Excellent' WHERE [Episode Number]=" & epNumber
ConnectionString.BeginTransaction(sqlString)
ConnectionString.Close()
End Sub

I get this error code in the log and a general unable to login error within Visual basic itself:

2007-11-22 15:44:39.78 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 5.
2007-11-22 15:44:39.78 Logon Login failed for user 'Mark'. [CLIENT: <local machine>

The state of 5 refers to "User ID is not valid." but I can login to SQL Server Management Studio Express just fine with the username and password in the code posted. Also of note, I can login to the Server Managment with the sa account username and password. When I use the credentials in visual basic code, same error. Any ideas? I am trying to connect to a database which is on this computer (local) in the root folder of the application, called Library.mdg.

Thanks so much all

Complete Lack Of Database Connectivity

May 9, 2008

 A couple of days ago I installed SQL Server 2005 developer. To pave the way for this I removed SQL Server 2000 and 2005 Express. Since then I've been unable to connect from any of my applications or websites in Visual Studio 2005 to either:- my new 2005 Developer database engine- my colleagues 2005 developer database engine. My colleague can connect to my databases from his visual studio on his machine. I am receiving unspecified OleDb errors.Anyone else had this happen? Anyone know where I should start looking? I've uninstalled all .Net frameworks and re-installed 1.1 and 2.0.Many thanks, Sam

SQL Tools :: BCP And BULK INSERT To Copy Complete Database Contents?

Jan 29, 2015

Script: [URL] ....

I need to move all of the contents of one database into anther with the same schema, and it looks like this might be just what I need. But it is from 2007, so I wonder if it is still current?

Also, having tried to run it on another database to generate the script that will actually do the copying, I have a few questions. It looks like it generates statements to import the data twice. For example:

BULK INSERT [TaPerfGDB].[dbo].[i1]
   FROM 'C:Tempi1.Dat'
   WITH (FORMATFILE = 'C:Tempi1.FMT',
         BATCHSIZE = 1000000,
         ERRORFILE = 'C:TempBI_i1.ERR',
         TABLOCK);

And a little later:

INSERT INTO [TaPerfGDB].[dbo].[i1]
    SELECT *
      FROM  OPENROWSET(BULK  'C:Tempi1.Dat',
      FORMATFILE='C:Tempi1.Xml'
      ) as t1;

That does not really make any sense to me. It also generates statements like this:

bcp "[TaPerfGDB].[dbo].[GDB_GEOMNETWORKS]" format nul -n -CRAW -f "C:TempGDB_GEOMNETWORKS.fmt" --S"PGALLUCC-M7" -T

What is the deal with the double hyphen by the servername? Won't it just see that as a comment? It can be easily fixed, but I am just suprised that it is still there after all these years. My purpose in doing this is a desparate attempt to salvege a database that sits on a server with multiple drive errors. These prevent backups, so I cannot just restore the database on the new server. That is why I want to try an approach that goes table by table, so that at least all the tables which are not touched by the drive errors can be moved.

It is a 3 TB database running on SQL Server 2008 R2 std. ed.

Encrypting Data

May 4, 2004

I have an application that has stores sensitive data in an SQL server and I am currently handling this through my ASP.NET application using the encryption classes in C#.

One of the things we would eventually like to be able to do is use other programs (like Microsoft Access) to run advanced Querys on the tables and retrive the data. With the encyption being done in C#/ASP all that would be returned would be the encrypted data.

I wondering if there is a way to build a layer to encrypt/decrypt data at the database level, my searches haven't yeiled to much info (As well as a trip to Borders) as I haven't seen any books that even touch on this.

I don't know a lot about SQL right now (Mainly only MySQL so Stored Procs and all that stuff are really new to me) so I don't know if I would go about it this way or not? (Using a stored procedure)

Can anyone reccommened where I should start to learn about accomplishing this? Books are usually the best help but I'll take any kind of information that can be thrown my way :-)

Thanks!

Encrypting Data Within The DB

Jul 20, 2005

Hello,I am running Microsoft SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2000 Sever. I havebeen working with SQL Server, Building ASp WebSites for many years now.I am by no means an expert - nor have I had ANY formal training. So ebarwith me if my questions seem elementary...I have some questions regarding sensitive data and encryption.There is a project that is headed my way were the social security numberis being used as the unique identifier for an account. I have alwaysused as identity column as a unique identifier. What would be the prosand cons of using the SSN as a unique identifier?#1 How do I go about encrypting the number to store in the DB. Is thisdone within SQL Server? Or before the data is inserted?#2 Is it possible to use an encrypted field as a unique identifier?My gut tells me to use the identity column , encrypt the SSN and not useit as any part of an identifier.Thank You for your Help.. Now when i enter a value into the textbox in asp.net page. it shows

"implicit conversion from varchar to varbinary not possible" pls tell me what is the solution? do i have to convert the value in vb code while accessing the value of the textbox or do i have to convert the value while passing the value when call stored procedure.

Encrypting All With Password

Oct 3, 2007

I have a bunch of packages that I was working with on a development server and have now moved to a production server. The package protection level was set to DoNotSaveSensative during the development, when I loaded them onto the production server I changed the protection level to EncryptAllWithPassword. I have a few parent packages that call other packages using the execute package task. Since, I now have encrypted packages i had to supply this task with the password, that is where the problem started. The parent package fails when it tries to execute the child package, saying the password was not supplied or it is wrong. I assure you it is not wrong, so is the parent package not storing the password since it was created with no password? Next I created a new parent package and supplied it with a password to call the child package and it works fine. Do I have to recreate all of my parent packages in this way? Is there a way for the parent package to rebuild itself and store the password? Any help would be appreciated.

Encrypting A Column

Oct 22, 2007

I am trying to encrypt a column, and then do a select and decrypt the results.
I believe that I am encrypting the data properly, but whenever I try and do a select the column comes back as NULL.
If I do a select without trying to decrypt the column (select * from table) I get the following:

Name | Dept | Encrypted_Info
-----------------------------------------------
scott | it | 0x38383131

If I try and decrypt it I get this

Name | Dept | Encrypted_Info
-----------------------------------------------
scott | it | NULL

This is the query that I put together to create the database, table, DB Master Key, Cert, encrypt the column, and then select and decrypt the result:

create database QA_Encrypted

Go

create table QA_Encrypted.dbo.Enc_Table1

(UserName varchar(50),

Dept varchar(50),

Encrypted_Info varbinary(MAX))

Go
use QA_Encrypted

Go

if not exists (select * from sys.symmetric_keys where symmetric_key_id = 101)

create Master Key encryption by password = 'Pa55w0rd'

Go

Create Certificate QACert

with subject = 'Certificate for Testing'

Go

Create symmetric Key QAEncryptionKey with Algorithm = DES

Encryption by certificate QACert

Go

open symmetric key QAEncryptionKey decryption by certificate QACert

update QA_Encrypted.dbo.Enc_Table1 set Encrypted_Info = EncryptByKey(Key_GUID('QAEncryptionKey'), 'AUTHENTICATOR')

Go

use QA_Encrypted

insert into dbo.enc_table1 values ('scott', 'it', Convert(varbinary,'8811'))

OPEN Symmetric Key QAEncryptionKey

Decryption by CERTIFICATE QACert

select * from dbo.Enc_Table1

Select Username, Dept, Convert(varchar, DecryptByKey(Encrypted_Info)) as "decrypted"

from dbo.Enc_Table1

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
