Encrypting The Configuration File Values Stored In SQL Server

Mar 8, 2007

Hi All,

I have the following requirement. I need to store the password for the connection manager in the configuration file. The sink for the configuration file is SQL Server. Though the password field appears as "******" the actual value is being taken as ""******" itself. If i update the SQL server table with the correct value, then the package starts working. But, the password is shown as clear text.

If i write logic to encrypt the password column in the configuration table, is there a way to tell the SSIS execute engine to decrypt the password before using the same for making the connection.

Is there a place holder, where i can write the decrypt code so that the decrypted password can be sent to the execution engine?

Thanks In Advance,

Madhu

My Package Does Not Take The Values Configured In The Configuration File.

Jan 29, 2007

Hi all,

I created a simple file system task to copy a file from one location to another on my local system.

I used variables to specify the source and destination paths and now in my configuration file if I configure the values to something else also the package is taking the initial default values and not the values specified in the configuration file.

Can anyone throw some light on this.

Thanks in advance.

How To Execute SSIS Package With Configuration Stored In SQL Server?

Jun 29, 2006

Hi,

I have a SSIS package called "MyExport" stored on the SQL server 2005 standard SP1. I have created an SSIS package configuration stored in a SQL table msdb.dbo.SSIS Configurations, with the configurationFilter = "Export2" with some configuration values which I can change programmatically as needed.

How do I execute this package with the configuration in the SQL table? I don't seem to have any problem when the package configuration is stored in an .xml file. The documentation is very poor or non-existant on trying to do execute the package with configurations stored in SQL server. I just can't seem to get the proper syntax.

Can someone give me an example of a dtexec command for the above or maybe some c# code?

In Execute Package Utility, when you select the Configurations option, it pops up a dialog box for a FILE based configuration file (*.dtsconfig). There is NO WAY to access a configuration stored in the [dbo].[SSIS
Configurations] table - which is where the SQL based configurations are stored. If you could pick a SQL based configuration, you would then need to pick the ConfigurationFilter for the configuration you want to use.

It's the same when you try to create a new job in SQL Server Agent - you can't select the package configuration stored in SQL server. When you get to the configurations tab, you can only add a file based configuration.

I've checked BOL as well, and there are no examples or discussion of this that I can find.

If anyone can point me in the proper direction, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Where To Keep Configuration Parameter Values

Apr 12, 2007

hi,

i wanna know ,where to keep configuration parameter values either in an config file (xml), or a parameter table. i have it in xml and its working fine , but for a few of them , i need a greater fleximibility to change the values at any time, so was considering a param table.

the problem is that , a common package which reads the config from xml , now will need to read it from a table , while in case of xml , a file path can be assigned to a variable to be used by the package, but here, i dont have any db connection specification, it may be loaded on various servers. is it feasible..to use a parameter table...??

Overall, I need information on everything that I need to encrypt data using SQL Server 2000, and How to perform the tasks!!!

Encrypting Data In SQL Server 2000

Nov 1, 2007

I support an accounting application that uses SQL as the db engine. One of our clients is asking about encrypting of certain data within the database. The developer does not encrypt the data nor have they any plans to. My question is, can we turn on encryption of a field in one of the data tables that will not require decryption by the accounting application. In other words, if we set encryption at the db level, can the server itself decrypt the data when it's called by the application? Or does the application have to do the decryption?

Thanks in advance and please excuse my ignorance.

SSIS Deployment With Configuration Values In SQL Table

Oct 15, 2007

I have 4 packages in one solution. I have created one configuration table in SQL server for all the packages. For each package, I have a different configuration filter in the same table. Everything works fine in the development environment. But when I create a deployment utility and deploy the packages, the values are not picked from the configuration table although I have re-created the configuration table in the new database. It tries to pick up the values from the database used in the development environment and thus it fails. I have changed all the connection strings in the package after deployment but still of no use.

I am not getting where I am going wrong. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Can You Help With My Understanding Of Encrypting The Packages And/or SQL Server Storage?

May 11, 2007

Hello,

I've been using SSIS for a while and think I get the gist of how it works (and it works nicely!).

However, because of the configuration on my machine I am constantly moving the dtsx files around (long story). Sometimes I make a full image backup and then later restore those SSIS packages.

The problem is that even if I copy the dtsx files to a different directory and then copy them back (without making any changes) I get a 'Cannot Aquire Connection' message. Other times I get errors that have to do with the encryption of the individual package. For those, I just reset the package to save with a password, save it, and then reopen it and can resave it again with the userkey encryption. This one occured when I move the packages from one machine to another.

Is there a best (or at least good) way to save packages with the sensitive data that won't force me to reconfigure it each time I move a package around? Or have to enter passwords each time?

Also, what is the advantage of saving the files in SQL Server? I assume you are not actually saving the files, just the data about them. I just don't understand it enough to even ask an intelligent question about it.

Thank you for the help.

Sql 2005: Encrypting Data In Motion Between Client And Server

Aug 18, 2006

Right-clicking "Protocols for MSSQLSERVER" under the Sql 2005 Server Configuration Manager I
find the "Force Encryption" option. Right-clicking the SQL Native Client Configuration, Client Protocols,
I find "Force Protocol Encryption"

I believe these can be used together to force the connection between a client (running the SQLNC client) and a sql 2005 server to be encrypted. In other words, the data "in motion" can be encrypted.

1. Is my understanding correct?

2. Do I need to use a certificate to make this work?

NULL Values Returned When Reading Values From A Text File Using Data Reader.

Feb 23, 2007

I have a DTSX package which reads values from a fixed-length text file using a data reader and writes some of the column values from the file to an Oracle table. We have used this DTSX several times without incident but recently the process started inserting NULL values for some of the columns when there was a valid value in the source file. If we extract some of the rows from the source file into a smaller file (i.e 10 rows which incorrectly returned NULLs) and run them through the same package they write the correct values to the table, but running the complete file again results in the NULL values error. As well, if we rerun the same file multiple times the incidence of NULL values varies slightly and does not always seem to impact the same rows. I tried outputting data to a log file to see if I can determine what happens and no error messages are returned but it seems to be the case that the NULL values occur after pulling in the data via a Data Reader. Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and get some additional debugging information around this error?

Compare Incoming Input File Row Values With Database Row Values In SSIS

Jan 23, 2008

Hi All,

I receive the input file with some 100 columns and some 20k+ rows and I want to check the incoming input row is existed in the database or not based on 2 key columns. If the row is existed then I need to check all the columns (nearly 100 columns) values in input and the database are equal or not. If both are equal I need to treat them seperately if not there is a seperate logic. How Can I do that check for each row and for each column?

Basically the algorithm is like this, if the input file row is not existed in the database then treat that as new row else if the input row is existed in the database then check all the columns are equal or not. If all the columns are equal then treat that as existing row and do nothing else if some columns are not equal then treat this row seperately.

I found some thing to achieve the above thing.
1. Take the input row and check in the database.
2. If the row is not found in the database then treat it as new row.
3. If row is found in the database then
a) Take the source row and prepare a concatenated string for all the columns
b) Take the database row and prepare a concatenated string for all the columns
c) Find out the hash code for the 2 strings and then compare hash codes for equal.

The disadvantage of this is running a loop 2*m*n times where m is the number of rows and n is the number of columns. It should be done 2 times for input file row and database row.

Can anybody suggest a good method to do this?

What does the function "GetHashCode" for InputBuffer in method "Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)" will do?
Will it generates hash code based on all the columns values?

Pls clarify.

Regards
Venkat.

Configuration File Not Always Used

Oct 1, 2006

I have a simple SSIS package (stored in the file system) that gets a file path from a configuration file. The configuration type is an indirect XML configuration file that uses an environment variable to store the location of the configuration file.

When I run the package using dtexecui, or just dtexec from a command line, the package successfully picks up the file path from the configuration file (for verification I am writing out the variable containing the path to the log file). However when I run the package from a SQL Agent job it appears that the configuration file is not being used (the path is set to the same dummy path that I used during development). I have tried running the job as both a CmdExec and an Integration Services job and both fail on the same thing (invalid file path).

Both the SQL Server Agent service and the Integration Services service use a domain account as their start up account. This domain account has been included in the local administrators group on the server (in case it was having trouble accessing the environment variables).

What is the problem here €“ surely changing the way in which the package runs should not affect the configuration file settings! Any help would be appreciated€¦

[help] SSIS File Configuration (XML)

Apr 3, 2007

We are deploying our SSIS packages into different folders. For example:
Test1
est2
production

Test1 points to the Test1 database, etc.

So, I configured my SSIS package to use a database connection called dbMAIN.

I then setup the SSIS File Configuration (XML) so that "dbMain" points to Test1. This xml file, called Global.dtsConfig, sits in C: est1, the same place as my ssis.dtsx file.

I want to copy my dtsx file and my dtsconfig file into est2 and production. The problem is that the the location of dtsconfig is HARDCODED in the ssis package!

How do I dynamically change it?

I tried to hardcode the location to ".Global.dtsconfig", but that did not work! Please advise!

Configuration File Issue

Mar 29, 2008

Hi,

I'm sitting down again to see if I can get configuration files to work. To test, I've set up a simple package that reads a flat file and writes to a table.

I've enabled configurations by clicking the checkbox in the configurations window. I am using an xml file on the local server, and there is an absolute path defined to the file. I also added a password to the xml file so the connection will work. To this point, everything works.

However, when I go into the configuration file and edit it to point to another server, it doesn't pick it up!

That is, when I run my package, it still writes the data to the old server. It's like it's completely ignoring the configuration file and just using the OLE DB connection manager instead.

However, if I delete the OLE DB conn mgr, the package doesn't work.

Please help... this is where I got stuck before.

Thank you

Is It Possible To Read Configuration From An INI File ?

May 19, 2008

Hi guys,

That's the question. I'm sure I will be encourage to use xml or other configuration types rather than INI files. But INI file has the advantage of not embedding any object property path and can be used for both packages and other applications.
Imagine a large implementation with hundreds of packages and dozens of class libraries and applications which are configured from the same INI file.
Imagine also that the production environment must support both DTS 2000 and SSIS 2005 packages as it's impossible to migrate all at once.

I've read that SSIS would support INI configuration files:

In Package Configurations Kirk says:

"...The two types of package configurations that haven't been documented yet in books online is INI and SQL configurations. INI package configurations have basically been provided for backward compatibility..."

And in BOL, in the DTSConfigurationType Enumeration description we can find that the INIFile configuration Type is also mentioned.

Anyway, a possible workaround is building a custom task with an UI that allows to assign INI keys to object properties, but I wanted to know if it's possible to avoid this.

Thanks in advance

Leandro

Configuration File Issues

Jan 18, 2008

I created an SSIS package that is connecting to 2 SQL Databases, one connection is using windows auth and the other database connection is using SQL Auth to connect to the database. I setup a config file to use for my ID, servername, database, and password but when I run my SSIS package it fails stating'

"[Execute SQL Task] Error: Failed to acquire connection "dbConnection". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection."

If I open up my connecting dbConnection in Connection Manager the username is filled it but the password is blank, if I enter in the password and click 'test connection' it passes. I have the ProtecionLevel = EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey but the password is still 'blanked out' So my question is

1) how can I use the config file to store my id and pwd for my db connection?
2) how can I get my package to read the config file to get the ID and password for my database.
3) is there another way to do this? Would a varaiable work for this, if so how do they work?
