String Or Binary Data Would Be Truncated. I Get This Error When Entering Data Using Sql Server Management Studio Express.

May 21, 2008

String or binary data would be truncated. I get this error when entering data using sql server management studio express.

I am not running a sql to insert or update the table. This is through the EDI.

The data type is varchar(100). I enter one character and it errors on me. So this isn't a string being too long problem.

Any ideas?

Newbie Question: Entering Data Into SQL Server?

Feb 28, 2008

Can someone help me to understand something about SQL Server? I will use Access for comparison.

Suppose you have a SQL Server database and you want users to be able to enter data into the fields just like you could with an Access database and forms. How would you set that up with SQL Server? I have noticed that you can convert an Access database into SQL Server, but you still need to use Access forms to enter data into the tables stored in SQL Server.

What if you wanted to create an SQL Server database from the ground up and set it up for user entry?

What am I missing here?

SQL Server Management Studio - Entering Field Data

Aug 28, 2007

Hello experts

I'm trying to enter some data into a table to run some tests. Whenever I open the table, I can enter data into all my fields *except* for the fields that I defined as Binary data types. I've tried to enter 0, 1, true, false... I always get the same error...

"Invalid value for cell...
The changed value in this cell was not recognized as valid.
Error Message: You cannot use the Result pane to set this Field data to values other than NULL"

Any ideas on this? I thought Binary was True or False? Is it the way I'm trying to enter data? I'm not familiar with SQL code and I just need to get a few rows filled up with data so I can test using gridview to pull the data onto a webpage.

Thanks

Front End Options For Entering Data Into An Oracle Database

Feb 1, 2006

Hi,I need to set up a generic table in Oracle that allows users to enterdata that can later be retrieved in reports.I was thinking of a 3 column table in this structure:DATE,ITEM,VALUEfiguring that you can store anything in this way because ITEM can beanything and you can have multiple instances of a particular value byhaving a new date.Does that seem reasonable? In any case, what are my user front end options? I was thinking aMicrosoft Access database but its not ideal because not everyone herehas Access? Can you do it with Excel? Or what other options are there as a simpleuser front end to enter the data? Thanks for any advice.Kim

SQL Express 2005 --&> Entering Production

Apr 7, 2006

I've built a web app using VWDEE. I created my express database in the
app_data directory using VWDEE and everything worked really well.

Then I copied the site into my production directory (same computer) and
setup the site under IIS. Now I cannot connect to the database.

How is one supposed to access a express database created then moved in this way?

Thanks,

Entering Dates In Blank Rows

May 9, 2007

I'm hoping that someone can help. This is my first time posting and fortunately I can normally find what I need but this time I am stumped.

I have a query that produces a date range. The problem is I want to insert or at lease display the dates between even if they don't show up in table. Here's the problem.

My intial query is
select date_of_call
from call_data
where date_of_call >= '2001-09-01' and date_of_call <= '2001-09-15'
order by date_of_call

Results:
2001-09-03 00:00:00.000
2001-09-07 00:00:00.000
2001-09-10 00:00:00.000
2001-09-13 00:00:00.000
2001-09-13 00:00:00.000
2001-09-13 00:00:00.000
2001-09-13 00:00:00.000
2001-09-13 00:00:00.000
2001-09-14 00:00:00.000

When I do a group by and count it looks like this:
select date_of_call, count(date_of_call) as Count_Date_of_Call
from call_data
where date_of_call >= '2001-09-01' and date_of_call <= '2001-09-15'
group by date_of_call
order by date_of_call

Date_Of_Call, Count_Date_of_Call
2001-09-03 00:00:00.0001
2001-09-07 00:00:00.0001
2001-09-10 00:00:00.0001
2001-09-13 00:00:00.0005
2001-09-14 00:00:00.0001

If you notice out of 15 days it only shows 5 days. I am wondering how I can insert the days missing and insert either null or 0 values in the count column so it would look something like this:

Date_Of_Call, Count_Date_of_Call
2001-09-01 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-02 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-03 00:00:00.0001
2001-09-04 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-05 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-06 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-07 00:00:00.0001
2001-09-08 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-09 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-10 00:00:00.0001
2001-09-11 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-12 00:00:00.0000
2001-09-13 00:00:00.0005
2001-09-14 00:00:00.0001

Failed To Generate A User Instance Of SQL Server Due To Failure In Retrieving The User's Local Application Data Path

Jun 21, 2005

I installed my asp.net 2.0 web application  and sql express june editon on my windows 2003 server. When the application tries to reach the database i am getting the following error"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed."I can understand that it has something to do with user right but more than that I am pretty lost. Can anyone translate this error for me and give me some tips on what do to.I checked first the user running the sql express service and saw it was the NETWORK SERVICE user. I changed it to be the local system account but that did not make any difference. The application is running just fine on my local computer(Win XP sp2). How Should I Render Appropriate User-Entry For Getting User Data Dynamically?

Sep 20, 2007

Hi all
Recently i was asked to design and implement an On-line WebSite for a Shop Store.I decided to define some Category for this Shop's Products such as MP3-Players,Mobiles,Televisions,Monitors and so on....and then Assign each product to a certain Category.Something like Amazon.Com , So i designed my Category and Product Table as follow:
Category Table----------------CatID    int Primary-KeyCatDesc  varchar(50)
Product Table-------------ProductIDProductDescCatID
After that i noticed that each category has its own Fields and Property and sometimes somecategories have common Fields for example , Price ,Color are two Common Property or Fieldsfor all Categories that i mentioned earlier But , Size is a special property for only[Monitor] or [Television] Categories and isn't useable for [Mice] or [KeyBoard] categories for example. So i Added a table for Keeping each category's Fields as follow:
Category Fields Table---------------------FieldID     intCatID       intFieldDesc   varchar(50)FieldType   tinyint --> 0=Numeric 1=String 2=Boolean...
After that i should save each Field's Value somewhere for each product so i added thefollowing Table(Product-Field-Value Table) for this purpose:
Product-Field-Value Table-------------------------ProductIDFieldIDValue
So far every thing is ok But i've faced with a new issue!!!.As you have realized so far , each productbelongs to certain category and each category has its own Fields List , in the other hand one category maybe has only 3 to 6 Fields but another Category might has 10 or more fields,So my problem here is when user wants to Add new product to Databse ,how should i get the Field's value for each product in an ASPX page ?in the other hand i'm dealing with a dynamic structure as you can see, so how should i Render the appropriate User Entries for getting Values of each product dynamically and then Saving these values in the Database? what Asp.Net Components should i use for this purpose? Could anyone help me?
Thanks in advance.Kind Regards.

I've been quite excited about SQL Server MDS that should allow non-IT staff to easily maintain data. However maintaining data that have many-to-many relationships seems to be quite a pain. I believe the best way is:

Open up your MDS web interfaceGo to entities > product (for example)Add a new member and fill the details Click "product parts" in the bottom right "Related Entities" partAdd a new memberTry and find the product you just created from the dropdownlistSelect the first part and click OKAgain try and find the product you have created from the dropdownlistSelect the second part and click OKRepeat...Close the tab on your browser and finish your product entity. How I wish it worked:

Open up your MDS web interfaceGo to entities > product (for example)Add a new member and fill the detailsCheck a checkbox for each part visible under "product parts" in the bottom right "Related Entities" partFinish your product entity.

Firing A Trigger When A User Updates Data But Not When A Stored Procedure Updates Data

Dec 19, 2007

I have a project that consists of a SQL db with an Access front end as the user interface. Here is the structure of the table on which this question is based:

Code Block

create table #IncomeAndExpenseData (
recordID nvarchar(5)NOT NULL,
itemID int NOT NULL,
itemvalue decimal(18, 2) NULL,
monthitemvalue decimal(18, 2) NULL
)
The itemvalue field is where the user enters his/her numbers via Access. There is an IncomeAndExpenseCodes table as well which holds item information, including the itemID and entry unit of measure. Some itemIDs have an entry unit of measure of $/mo, while others are entered in terms of $/yr, others in %/yr.

For itemvalues of itemIDs with entry units of measure that are not $/mo a stored procedure performs calculations which converts them into numbers that has a unit of measure of $/mo and updates IncomeAndExpenseData putting these numbers in the monthitemvalue field. This stored procedure is written to only calculate values for monthitemvalue fields which are null in order to avoid recalculating every single row in the table.

If the user edits the itemvalue field there is a trigger on IncomeAndExpenseData which sets the monthitemvalue to null so the stored procedure recalculates the monthitemvalue for the changed rows. However, it appears this trigger is also setting monthitemvalue to null after the stored procedure updates the IncomeAndExpenseData table with the recalculated monthitemvalues, thus wiping out the answers.

How do I write a trigger that sets the monthitemvalue to null only when the user edits the itemvalue field, not when the stored procedure puts the recalculated monthitemvalue into the IncomeAndExpenseData table?

User Defined SQL Data Pull With ASP

Dec 19, 2007

Good Afternoon,
I have recently been tasked to come up with a means by which to create SQL data pulls based on user entries.  What I mean by this is, I will have a pre defined SQL data pull set up and the user can then select the criteria upon which to pull said data.
So, say I want to display a table where one of the colums has is the "Year".  I dont however want all years of data pulled, only 2005 - 2006.  So, in form field 1, I could select start year as 2005 and in form field 2, I could select end year as 2006.  This would then give me all data from this table based on that year range, or whatever year range I select and submit.
Is there a way to do this in ASP?  I have been reading up on UDF with SQL, but I cant find anything about linking it through the use of web forms or through ASP.  Or if there is another way to accomplish this?  Any assistance is very much appreciated!

Why User Defined Data Type?

Aug 4, 2003

what are the advantages of using user-defined data types in SQL Server?

for example,
you may have Customer Number Cust_Num varchar(10)
you can create a user-defined data type like this:
udt_CustNum

so now your table creation script for Custome table become:
Cust_Num udt_CustNum

however, once the user-defined data type is referred by other tables.
it cannot be changed/deleted.

So, i wonder what are the good reason of using udt instead of fundamental data types. (built-in datatypes)

the only good thing i think is about:
the abstract naming of the data type.
you may have other key fields like Supplier Number which is varchar(12)
instead of u have to remember varchar(10) for customer and varchar(12) for supplier
u just to remember udt_CustNum for customer and udt_SuppNum for supplier.

what do u think?

Data Permissions For Reporting User?

Dec 9, 2013

I have a server with a dozen or so databases created by a 3rd party for some software that we've purchased. Because of the mess involved I've created a separate database for reporting purposes contains a large number of objects that reference the other databases using 3-part naming.

Now I'm on to securing this stuff up.

- I don't want my users having any write permissions so have added them to the db_denydatawriter role.

- I don't want them having access to certain schemas within the reporting database so have granted select and execute permissions to the specific schemas.

I like simple.

Unfortunately because of the 3 part naming they require access to the other databases... but I would love to not have to do this as I want to force them in to using the objects I have created.

What are my options?
