Enumerate SQL Server Logins And Permissions

Sep 10, 2007

Haven't been able to find the answer to this after sever searches. So decided to open the thread myself.

I am trying to write a report enumerating logins in SQL Server and all database-level and object-level permissions granted to each login.

Can someone tell me what system objects I can query to fetch this information?

TIA.

Migrating SQL Server Logins/permissions

Apr 12, 2000

I need to move several databases to a new server while retaining the same logins/permissions. Books Online indicates that DTS can move the SQL Server logins, but it sets the passwords to NULL in the process. Is there any way to move the logins and keep all passwords/permissions intact?

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Logins With No Database Permissions

Nov 3, 2014

Query to show logins that don't have any permissions within the SQL instance? I'm tasked with doing some cleanup and have found some cases where the database was deleted or moved to another server but the logins that used it were not deleted. I'd like to identify them to research.

For instance a query to show logins that have no permissions in any of the existing databases would be handy. I'm thinking it would be complicated by the need to loop through all of the existing databases and then outer join it to the list of instance level logins. Going to try to write something like that but was hoping that a script already exists.

Permissions To See Server Logins/Create Database Users

Feb 2, 2007

Our company has 2 Database Roles (DBE and DBA). The DBE creates
database schema, performs SQL Server Administration, and manages server
security. The DBA writes data access, ETL, and manages database
security. In 2005, we're struggling with how to allow the DBA to see
all of the logins on the server in order to add them as users of their
database. What permissions does the DBA need to select from any of the
logins on the server to add them to their database?

Userids/logins And Permissions?

Jul 13, 1999

Hello:

We are working on an application but with other users who have been using the SA password. The application is running on MSSQL 6.5 and sp4.
We have been generally assigning logins/userids to new users although some people are using the SA id. The SA id password has been changed so that will stop users (really developers) from using it.

Most users are assigned to a group which has select, insert, update, delete
permission. Some users will be moved to a group which as only select privilege

I would like to query the system tables and see exactly what permissions
are assigned to each user.

I can look at Enterprise manager and cut and paste this information I think. This is cumbersome

1) Does anyone have a query I can run to get the userid/login and the permissions for each userid?

2) How can I make a user a dbo and give him/her the same permissions as a dbo on tablesalready creaetd?

Thanks.

Most Logins Dropped-No Permissions

Mar 28, 2007

Hi,

In my local instance of SQL Server at work (which I use for testing), somehow all of the logins except 2 were dropped. The administrators group no longer exists as a login (nor do any other windows users or groups)-the only 2 remaining are sa (which is disabled) and a SQL login I had created earlier which has no permissions except read permission on master. I can login as this SQL user, but I do not have permissions to create logins or enable the sa account. Do I have any options other than uninstalling and reinstalling my local instance?

Thanks,

-Dave

Backing Up Logins And Permissions For SQL Servers

May 31, 2006

Hi,I work as an IT Administrator and part of my job role is to useEnterprise Manager and Query Analyzer to backup the logins andpermissions for each database on our SQL Servers. This information isused as a backup in the event of a server failing so we then havesomething to fall back on if we need to add the same logins/permissionsagain.This takes ages to do, as I have to manually enter all the informationinto a spreadsheet.Steps:- In Enterprise Manager I connect to a server then 'Security' tab, then'Logins'. I then enter all items into a spreadsheet.- In Query Analyzer I connect to a server then do 'sp_helpuser' to listall the permissions for each database. I then enter all informationinto a spreadsheet.I was wondering if there is such a program available on the market thatwould do this for me? I know that MS Baseline Security can show flatfile share permissions to a certain degree and was wondering if therewas a similar program out there to help me do my job easier, or ifthere is a simple way of doing this in the future...Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.Regards,Jenny

All logins which not exist have to be created and which existsignored including the NT accounts2. Users same as the old database + the existing ones stay in database3. Passwords for the new logins.4. All permissions/grants on all objects for the users that exists(usually it's the case) and ignore those that don't.I have script which does some of it, but it's not perfect, so everytime there are some errors. Please let me know, if you need me to email script that I have. Way To Determine Which Logins Have Write Permissions To Database On Sever

Hi there,

Does anyone know a way (a query perhaps?) to determine which logins have write permissions to a specific database on SQL Server 2005? Ive thought about joining sys.syslogins & sys.sysusers but looking at the columns, not sure which one would render me that info.

Any help is appreciated. Many thanks!

A question on the permissions hierarchy:
Since logins, database users, and database roles are both principals and securables - what does it mean to GRANT permission on a login/user/role to another principal? Does it mean that for a login - you can GRANT permission to EXECUTE AS that login or modify it, for example?

I am trying to build a tree similar to the one in SQL Server Management Studio for the system functions in the SQL language.

Is there a way to get these programmatically? I would like to avoid typing them out by hand.

Moving DBs From SQL Server Logins To Windows Logins

Apr 3, 2007

I am a systems analyst and work with an app that runs against 2 SQL Server DBs. Though I have some familiarity with SQL Server and SQL, I am not a DBA.

The app executable is tied to a Windows service.
When we install the app, we run a process that builds 2 dbs to include:
Tables, indexes, stored procedures, views and user accounts.
SQL Server is set up for mixed mode authentication.

Normally, the dbs run off the local db user accounts which are tied to local logins with the same names.
We have a client that wants to remove our standard logins so that they can run on only a Windows login.
I know I should be able to tie the db users to a Windows login.
And I can do the same for the service.

But I am at a loss as to how to get this done.
How do you associate db users with a Windows login?
When I have tried sp_change_users_login I get an error that the Windows login does not exist. (Though I have added the Windows account to the DB.)

Hope this all makes sense.

Lost SQL Logins, But Still Have DB Logins - Script To Recreate SQL Logins?

Jan 21, 2007

ok, first, I know... I forgot to run a backup of the master database, and I forgot to run a script to caputure logins. Not that that is out of the way... I need to recreate the logins under the Securities tab below the databases. All the company databases have the user names and passwords assigned to them, but they are not able to login, because they are not able to authenticate to the SQL server first.

Is there a script that someone has that will copy the company database security info for the users and recreate them in the SQL security tab?

I know that I can rebuild them manually, but I need to delete them first in the application software, then delete them from the databases, and then recreate them in the application software... and as simple as that sounds... it is a slow moving process.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

How To Enumerate IS Folders ?

Dec 5, 2007

Hi All,

I need to get access to stored packages. To do so I use
Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Application class.
There are methods: Application.FolderExistsOnDtsServer, Application.FolderExistsOnSqlServer
but I need to enumerate existed folders.
Are there something like: Application.GetFolders(String ParentFolderName) ?
I have searched in doc but there is not any useful except:

"To verify that the folder was created, the following Transact-SQL query selects all packages stored in the File System folder of the Stored Packages package store.

select * from sysdtspackages90 "

It is not suitable for me because I don't have permissions to access database

Replication: Cannot Enumerate Changes At Subscriber

Jul 2, 2003

Hi all!

I hope anyone here can help me with this tough problem:

I have a replication enviroment with several subscribers.
Publisher:MSSQL 2000, SP3
Subscribers: MSSQL200, SP3 and MSDE2000, SP3

Since a few weeks, one of the subscribers fails when
synchronizing with the message
"This process could not enumerate changes at the subscriber"

The erroroutput with verboselevel 3 doesn't help me much, I
append it to the end of this posting. (unfortunately german)

I heard that this error can be caused by a "blank" in an image
column or different Service Pack Versions - definitely not
possible in this case!
The only strange detail is that the SQL Server Versionnumber
of this MSDE shown via EM is not the same as the number shown
in controlpanel->software. By the way, is it ok that here are
two lines for the MSDE?
SP3 is definitely installed on all machines!

Any help would be greatly appreciated - i'm already losing hope...
Best Regards, Gert

The Process Could Not Enumerate Changes At The 'Subscriber'

Apr 5, 2007

Hi,

I have a problem with merge replication on SQL 2000.

-Publisher is Standard edition, subsriber MSDE

-Both SP4

-It always fails at same table.

- CHECKDB shows no errors

- It worked OK for a quite long period...

-Replication fails with this mesage ('verbose ouput'):

Some tables in article are merged succesfully so I don't believe it's a network error.

Anyway I will try to recreate the subscription, but there is a problem that subcriber has more data than publisher, so i have to manualy trasfer (DTS) the data to publisher before the new snapshot is applied.
If this also fails i guess i can assume there is a connectivity problem.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome...

The Merge Process Could Not Enumerate Changes At The 'Subscriber'.

Apr 19, 2006

I have two SQL 2005 Standard servers using merge replication, and out of the blue started getting failure notices regarding "The merge process could not enumerate changes at the 'Subscriber'." I turned on verbose logging and noticed the following section:

2006-04-19 12:53:33.227 Category:NULL
Source: Merge Replication Provider
Number: -2147200999
Message: The merge process could not enumerate changes at the 'Subscriber'. When troubleshooting, restart the synchronization with verbose history logging and specify an output file to which to write.
2006-04-19 12:53:33.227 The Merge Agent was unable to update information about the last synchronization at the Subscriber. Ensure that the subscription exists at the Subscriber, and restart the Merge Agent.
2006-04-19 12:53:33.227 The merge process was unable to update last synchronization information at the Publisher.

Using Profiler on both sides, I don't see anything out the ordinary during the replication process until there are two calls in a row to the stored procedure sp_MSadd_merge_history90, where the second one is storing the error message listed above.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Scott Davis

Merge Process Could Not Enumerate Changes At The Subscriber

Apr 27, 2007

Hi,

I've seen quite a few posts about this error message but so far no answers. I'm merge replicating between SQL Server 2005 SP2 and SQL Server 2005 Mobile. Everything seems to run really well until at some point I get the above error message while running the replication from the device. It seems to happen just after I've made a schema change on the server e.g. the latest one was adding some new columns (which allow nulls) to replicated tables.

I've switched on verbose logging and I get the following:

The error message doesn't seem very helpful. Is there another way to find out what is causing the problem? I've tried reinitializing all subscriptions and generating a new snapshot but it makes no difference. The only way I've found to fix this is to delete the database on the subscriber and synchronise again (losing all subscriber data since the last sync).

SqlBrowseConnect Does Not Enumerate Named Instances In The Domain

Dec 11, 2007

Hello, I'm trying to list the default and named instances on our domain. When I run SqlBrowseConnect all I get back is a list of our servers, for example:
COMP01
COMP50

I'd like to get all the named instances as well, a list with:
COMP01
COMP01DD
COMP50

When I run "osql -L" I get the full list, but not with SqlBrowseConnect. I have tried to set SQL_COPT_SS_BROWSE_SERVER to (SQLPOINTER)NULL which, according to the docs, "[...] returns information for all servers in the domain." I have also set the SQL_COPT_SS_BROWSE_CONNECT to SQL_MORE_INFO_YES without any luck.

Any ideas on any property I might be missing?

Enumerate Subscriptions In A Merge Replicated CE Database?

How can I list all of the Subscriptions in a CE Database that was created with the .Net System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeReplication.AddSubscription method?

After I create the CE database in an sdf file, I can connect to it with SQL Servr Mgmt Studio, then see the list of Subscriptions in the Object TreeView, under "Replication"

But I can't find that Subscription list in any properties or methods of System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeReplication or System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeConnection

Should I be looking in RMO features like Microsoft.SqlServer.Replication??

We want to confirm that a local CE database was last synced from the expected SQL Server database by checking the Publisher property of each subscription in the CE database.

Copying Logins To A New Server

Aug 21, 2002

I have succeeded in reattaching the db to the new server, but the old logins do not work, as has been experienced by many people.

What follows was is a solution from an earlier post (last year) on this topic. I tried running the queries from Master in on the new server, and got the following error:
Server: Msg 2601, Level 14, State 3, Line 1
Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'sysusers' with unique index 'sysusers'.
The statement has been terminated.

The sql queries I am using are:

insert sysxlogins(srvid, sid, xstatus, xdate1, xdate2, name, password, dbid, language)select srvid, sid, xstatus, xdate1, xdate2, name, password, dbid, language
from "oldServerName".master.dbo.sysxlogins
where name not in ('DISTRIBUTOR_ADMIN', 'REPL_PUBLISHER', 'REPL_SUBSCRIBER', 'TRACEUSER', 'SA')

AND

insert sysusers(uid, status, name, sid, roles, createdate, updatedate, altuid, password)
select uid, status, name, sid, roles, createdate, updatedate, altuid, password
from "oldServerName".master.dbo.sysusers
where name not in ('public', 'INFORMATION_SCHEMA', 'db_owner', 'db_accessadmin', 'db_securityadmin', 'db_ddladmin', 'db_backupoperator', 'db_datareader','db_datawriter', 'db_denydatareader', 'db_denydatawriter', 'guest', 'dbo')

The old server is set up as a linked server on the new server.

This suggests that the information is all in the new server. Any tips? TIA D. Lewis
