Error 16916: A Cursor With The Name Tentative_cursor Does Not Exist

Jun 24, 2006

Hi,

I am creating a stored procedure which contains the declaration of a cursor, fetch the cursor, close the cursor, deallocate cursor. I tried executing this code in SQL analyzer and found working. But when I use the same code inside a create stored procedure, it throws the following error message.

Error 16916: A cursor with the name "tentative_cursor" does not exist

As a result, I am not able to proceed in creation of stored procedure with the above SQL statements.

Can any one help me where the problem is..

My SQL statements..
---------
DECLARE tentative_cursor CURSOR
FOR select * from TbTentativeBookingTable where ExpTime < GETDATE()
GO
OPEN tentative_cursor
GO
DECLARE @transactionno BIGINT
...
...
FETCH ...
CLOSE tentative_cursor
---------

Newbie Help: SQL Server Does Not Exist Error

Nov 23, 2004

I've seen this question asked when I searched, but I didn't see an answer that looked like it applied to me, so I'll ask again.....

Making the transition from VB 6 to VB.NET and decided to take a stab at database programming while I'm at it. I bought "Database Programming with Visual Basic.NET and ADO.NET" by Sams Publishing and ran into problems in the first chapter. I've posted some questions on the microsoft.public.vb.database newsgroup and got some help, but it's still not working.

I'll skip some of the boring stuff and dive right in with what I've found out so far:

From MSSQL$VSDOTNETLOGERRORLOG

2004-11-19 02:29:34.71 spid3 SQL global counter collection task is created.
2004-11-19 02:29:34.76 spid3 Warning: override, autoexec procedures skipped.
2004-11-19 02:29:58.87 spid51 Error: 15457, Severity: 0, State: 1
2004-11-19 02:29:58.87 spid51 Configuration option 'allow updates' changed from 0 to 1. Run the RECONFIGURE statement to install..
2004-11-19 02:29:59.01 spid51 Error: 15457, Severity: 0, State: 1
2004-11-19 02:29:59.01 spid51 Configuration option 'allow updates' changed from 1 to 0. Run the RECONFIGURE statement to install..
2004-11-19 02:29:59.46 spid3 SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' request from Service Control Manager.

The last suggestion was to uninstall and reinstall. I uninstalled VS and SQL and reinstalled getting the same error message in the log, but the message box said that installation was complete.

On the Server Explorer of the IDE, it shows my computers name (programmer) under Servers. When I expand that and expand SQL Servers, I see PROGRAMMERVSDOTNET. When I try to expand that, I get the SQL Server Login window with Server textbox disabled saying PROGRAMMERVSDOTNET and the Database blank. Under the Login it has James (my sign in name) and asks for a password. When I did the MS-DOS CLI installation, I used "password" as the SAPWD. I tried using password, and tried using the password to log on as James, and get the same error message: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

Any help would be appreciated, as long as you remember that I am a COMPLETE newbie at this. I'm fairly computer literate, but I don't know the first thing about databases.....

Thanks again,

James

Not Your Typical SQL Server Does Not Exist Error...

Aug 8, 2006

I'm not sure which forum to post this problem in, since it almost seems like a network issue with our SQL Server. We have SQL Server 2000 SP4 (8.00.2039) installed on our enterprise database server. I've been using ADO (through VB, VBA, VBScript, C++) to connect to it without any problems. INSERT's, UPDATE's, SELECT's, no problems whatsoever... EXCEPT: After performing a number of repetative statements, my ADO connection object will error with the dreaded "SQL Server does not exist or access denied" message.

By repetative statements, I mean something like this:

cn.Open "..."

Set rs = cn.Execute(...)

Do Until rs.EOF
cn.Execute "Insert into ..."
rs.MoveNext
Loop

I may be doing 1,000 inserts within the loop, sometimes more. Without fail, though, my program will error after a certain number. I display a progress indicator showing which record (i.e., "10 of 1,000") I'm currently processing and it seems to error at the same number everytime. For example, it may get to record 564 before displaying the error. If I end the program and run it again, it gets to about the same spot (often it's EXACTLY the same spot) and errors again. So, it's almost like a timeout condition.

I know why the error occurs -- my machine can no longer "see" the SQL server. I have tried pinging the server after I get this message and it's unreachable. If I wait five minutes, though, pinging works and my program continues to run. I have coded around it (if error, wait, and try again) but it's very annoying.

Does this sound like a problem with our SQL Server, Network, ADO, my workstation, or a combination of sorts?

SQL Server Does Not Exist Or Access Denied Error

Nov 15, 2003

Hi guys,
I just installed WebMatrix and MSDE (downloaded from www.asp.net), and I have set MSDE to use SQL authentication. I have granted user ASPNET read/write previlege and added it to the MSDE user's table. When I tried the following code, it gives me this error: "SQL Server does not exist or access denied."

<%@ Page Language="C#" Debug="true" %>
<%@ import Namespace="System.Data" %>
<%@ import Namespace="System.Data.SqlClient" %>

SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(ConnectionString);
SqlCommand myCommand = new SqlCommand(CommandText, myConnection);

myConnection.Open();

DataGrid1.DataSource = myCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection);
DataGrid1.DataBind();
}

</script>

And yes, I did make sure the MSDE is running.

Thanks alot

SQL Server Does Not Exist Or Access Denied Error

Oct 4, 2005

I'm trying to create to set up connection between my web application on the server and
the database on another box and getting "SQL Server does not exist or access denied" error.
Both the web server and the database machine are Windows 2003 Server, there's no firewall
enabled, there's mixed authentication enabled on the sql server. The machines are not on the
same domain so I'm using SQL Server authentication from web.config. Here's my connection string:

<add key="ConnectionString" value="Server=sqlboxip;User id=sqlaccountname;Pwd=sqlpass;Initial catalog=dbname">

I've also got <identity impersonate="true"> set in web.config.

Had it the connection working at some stage but then with more tweaking and app reinstall

Error 1911 Replication Column Does Not Exist

When I start the distribution agent I get the following error:
Column name '<here's the name of a column I didn't publish and don't need to replicate>' does not exist in the target table.
Error number: 1911

I assume this is because of some dependencies between the columns.

Is there any way I can replicate without those columns?

Bulk Insert Error File Does Not Exist

Oct 25, 2006

Hello

I am trying to bulk insert a text file into SQL 2005 table. When I execute the bulk insert I get the error

"Msg 4860, Level 16, State 1, Line 1. Cannot bulk load. The file "\ENDUSER-SQLEnduserTextB1020063.txt" does not exist."

The text file that it is saying does not exist I recently created thru my code. I can open the file but only when I rename the file will the Bulk Insert work. After creating the text file I am moving it to the server that SQL server is running on. Also if I run sp_FileExists it also says the file does not exist unless again I rename the file then this stored procedure recognizes the file. I dont' know if I have a permission issue or what is the problem. Any help would be appreiated.

Thanks

Dreaded SQL Server Does Not Exist Or Access Denied. Error

Dec 17, 2005

I have built a web application that runs on my local web server against my local SQL server and my development server, but now I'm trying to get it to work on the live server and I'm not getting a connection.  Whenever I try to open the connection, I get a.
SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
error.
Here is my connection string...
Public connString as string
Dim SQLServer As String = "xxx.xx.xx.xxx"
connString = "server=" & SQLServer & ";" _
& "database=DBName;Trusted_Connection=No;user id=xxxID;password=xxxPassword;"
myConnection2 = New SqlClient.SqlConnection(connString)
------------------------------------------------------------
I'm starting my connection to run a datareader this way...
Dim strSQL As String

strSQL = "SELECT ClientID, ClientName " & _
"FROM Client; "
' Create a connection to the table in the SQL database located on
' the remote computer.
Dim myCommand2 As New SqlClient.SqlCommand(strSQL, myConnection2)
myCommand2.CommandTimeout = 1200
myConnection2.Open()  'HERE IS WHERE THE ERROR OCCURS
Dim myReader As SqlClient.SqlDataReader = myCommand2.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)
While myReader.Read()
---------------------------------------------------------------
I can communicate with the server with no problem from my local computer.  I can ping the server, and I also tested it by creating a system DSN using the login and password in my application, and it finds the database with no problem.  I've tried to connect using the SQL Server's server name and the IP address and both return the same result.  I've also saw something in another post to set the trusted connection parameter to "yes" and that didn't work either.
I'm developing on a Windows XP Professional and I'm trying to connect to a Windows 2003 Server with SQL Server 2000 installed on the machine.
I did add the database by restoring a backup from my local server onto the live server.  I don't think that should matter, but maybe it does.  If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

Error Handling + Cursor

Oct 25, 2007

Hello group

I need some help and gaining knowledge per the SQL Standards.

I have a Stor Procedue which Cursor through say MASTER. This table have information/ Counm that guides me to multiple say two different table.
i.e, Col1 in MASTER table have the information on what table I need to work on COL2 in MASTER Table give me what Field I have to work on and accordingly move the data

Example :

MASTER
ID COL1 COL2 COL3
1 Address Street Nichols Rd.
1 Address Zip 90001
2 Address Street Michigan Ave
2 Address Zip 90002
3 Person FName James
3 Person LName Bond
4 Person FName Bill
4 Person LName Gates

Address
ID Street Zip
1 Nichols Rd. 90001
2 Michigan Ave 90002

Person
ID FName LName
3 James Bond
4 Bill Gates

For doing this I created a Store Procedure which Cursor thru MASTER table which for each row goes to Entity on which it has to work (MASTER Table : Col1 Value) and in that entity Its goes to the Field(MASTER Table: Col2 Value) and places the value of the Col3 in it.

It is working fine and superb. Now, I try to introduce Error Handling such that incase in order to see if there is any error while doing this INSERT and UPDATE.

SAMPLE QUERY: (Structure is Same but modified for readability)

UPDATE @ENTITY SET @FIELD = @VALUE WHERE ID = @KEYID
IF @@ERROR <> 0

BEGIN
INSERT INTO dbo.ErrorLog VALUES( @KEYID + ' , '+ @ENTITY + ' , ' + @FIELD +' , ' + @VALUE )
END

This query is working fine . If there is any error and for some reason if its not able to insert/update the data Its populates the ErrorLog Table and instead of failing the store proc goes for the next row and do teh necessary action

Finally SProc does what it has too
1) Get the data in teh respective tabel and colunm
2) if it cannot insert/ update go for the next row and populate the error log table with what it was n't able to update/ insert

SO Whats the problem? Good question , here is the issue or topic of discussion

1) What is the standard way of Error Handling. Did I atleast follow teh minimum Error Handling criteria.
2) I can see from teh table that, as required, its skipping the row into Error Log table whenevr its not able to do the required functions and going for next row
3) I introduce a Error and when I execute the Sproc it gives me Mesaage:

Msg 8152, Level 16, State 14, Line 1

String or binary data would be truncated.

The statement has been terminated.
Also I see that "Query Completed with Errors" well I said whenever teh SPROC see error do some thing else, then why would it count it as error and give me this message? Why is the SPROC failing.

What Should I do such that it counts or give when ever there is a genuine error. I mean it should not fail at all because I am saying there whenever there is an incapability of Insert/ Delete just simply skip the row and Insert that row in Error Log Table.

Am I missing something in this Proc?

If it will do that then is tehre any way or query or anything I have to do that handles the issue that
Whennver its not able to do whatever I am asking it to do (Ex: If I am asking it to insert INTEGER in Character Field) then an error is raised then just skipp that row insert that row in erro log and go for next row and dont fail the SPROC.

THANKS FOR THE PATIENCE FOR READING AND REPLYING.

Error On Update, But Not When Using Cursor

Dec 7, 2006

I've implemented a UDF in SQL Server 2005 written in C#. The function with its assembly has been registered ok with SQL Server and works fine. It accepts three short strings (nvarchar of lengths 5, 35, and 35) and returns a SQL formatted string (SqlString).

When I run the function to test it it works just fine, and the same is true if I run the function inside a cursor to update a field in a table. But when I do a simple update it crashes. I've so far received two different errors: first one error saying a string could not be converted into an integer (but the error does not occur when I enter the same input values manually via a test Windows form, or through the new Query Analyzer as a single query - or using it inside a cursor). Then one error saying a string was too short (I couldn't use substring(X, Y) because the string, I was told, was too short - it wasn't).

The problem thus cannot be with the function since it works just fine if I do like this:

UPDATE myTable SET CodeField = dbo.fnMyFunction(Field1, Field2, Field3) WHERE PersonId = 10000001

And it works fine while doing the same thing inside a cursor (for instance working with the first 10, 100 or 1000 records).

But when I do this it crashes:

UPDATE myTable SET CodeField = dbo.fnMyFunction(Field1, Field2, Field3)

For your information the table has about 1.5M records (for testing, it contain more data when on the production server) and my aim is to update the CodeField column as quickly as possible. The CodeField is a 12-character string that is based on a rather complex algorithm including the Field1, Field2 and Field3 strings. I'm using C# because it manages strings much better than SQL Server - and it is so much easier coding this stuff.

Anyhow, I've had this kind of problem before with SQL Servers 2000 and 7 (maybe even 6.5) and it seems the problem occurs when I let SQL Server go about its business at its own pace. But when I do something to control that it really takes one record at a time (through using a cursor or executing the query with a WHERE clause like the one above) it works splendidly.

The problem here is that a cursor is way too slow, and there really shouldn't be a problem with a simple UPDATE command, should it? After all, everything works just fine except when I let SQL Server do what it does best (i.e. update the field at its own speed, whatever that is).

Any ideas? This is very frustrating since it is impossible to try and find the error - it isn't there when testing! And it is frustrating since I remember having had the same kind of problem (but every time with different errors arising) before without finding a solution (except for slowing everything down - not an option here).

Is there a certain tweak I can do to make things work out, or should I code things differently?

Thanks!
