Hi all
I am using Windows XP SP2 with a Sql server 2005 Express installation. I created a test db with a user called test, schema also test. I gave the permission connect, db_datareader and db_datawriter. I can now connect into this user using WinSQL. But if I want to connect using a application which is using ODBC, then I get the error:
[SQLSTATE=28000 - [Microsoft][SQL Native][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'test'.[Native Error=18456]]
Because I connect using ODBC, I think there must be the problem. But I have to connect with ODBC. There is no other possibility.
any ideas ?
Regards, Waff
I found this out:
The server collation is defined to: Latin1_General_CI_AS
If I create a new login id in lowercase, then ODBC will change it to uppercase and then the server refuse the access. But why. CI means case insensitive, so doesn't matter if upper or lower case. should.
How do you use a id in lowercase and connecto via ODBC ?

Hi,
I've just installed a brand new instance of SQL on a new server. It's for our Helpdesk/Inventory software. All I needed to install was the DB Components and the Tools (primarily for Management Studio). I did not install SQL as a default instance, but called it TRACKIT8 (software using this instance). I have subsequently installs SP2 before trying to connect to the DB.
I am unable to conect to the DB Engine via Management Studio. In the Server name: field, there is a blank space, so I try to browse for a server, but I get nothing. I try to manually type the name of the server (NIASSQL2, localhost etc) into the field, but I cannot connect to the engine at all. I can see the services for the Server and Server Agent have started in the SQL Server Configuration Manager and I am able to change certain field in the properties of the Server and Agent (change the path of the error logs).
Is there something I am supposed to configure before I try to connect via the Management Studio? I am looking to change the paths of the Data Files, as I don't want them on my C: partition. Plus I have other instances I want to create and install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Hi! I have a little problem and I need your help.
I have recently installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. I did not install all the features, just the Database engine and Analysis Services. I also updated everything with SQL Server SP2.
So far, so good. But when I tried to connect to the Database Engine, I get a little window with the following message:
"Cannot connect to Valentin-PC (server name)."
"Login failed for user - User Name - ( Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456 )".
I have tried just about everything, but to no avail. What is strange is the fact that I can connect to the other server type that I have installed (Analysis Services). No connection problems there.
Can anyone help?
Mucho gracias!

I just installed SQL server Enterprise 2005 and connected database engine in SQL server management studio, but it is blank space when choose 'browse for more' at server name field. What's reason to cause this problem?
Questions for this problem:
1. Do I need to open the TCP port 1433 in firewall by hand for connect database engine?
2. I can€™t find the sqlbrowser.exe in SQL server/90/ folder, can I copy this file into it.
3. The SQL server mobile is work; I can connect the new created database. What€™s different to use SQL server mobile and database engine?
4. I got five discs from Microsoft; I have installed DVD server application and pack 2. Do I need to install the library?
Thanks for any help.

I am working (or trying to work) in Management Studio. I have one database that I use on my one and only machine. ( I am not using any of the default databases.) I have several queries saved as files, which I open as needed. Every time I open a file I get that VERY ANOYING Connect to Database Engine dialog box. OK, it's no big thing. I don't use Server Authentication so all I have to do is hit enter and I get connected. But why should I even have to hit enter once after I'm already connected?
How can I MAKE IT STOP?
Thanks,
Gregory

Hello,
I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my PC and during the installation I
have created a predefined instance (I have used Windows autentication).
I could use correctly SQL Server till some days ago, when I changed the
password of my PC login profile.
Now, when I open SQL Server, if I click on the "Connect" button,
the following error message appears (I translate it from italian version)
Unable to connect to "CARLO"
Further information:
An error has occurred while you were trying to establish a connection to
the server. When you connect to SQL Server 2005, this error can be generated
because SQL Server doesn't allow remote connections under the predefined
settings. (provider: Provider Named Pipes, error: 40 - Unable to open a
connection to SQL Server) (Micorsoft SQL Server, error:2)
I'm sure that the error raises because I have changed my PC access
password (the program worked correctly before), but in the "Connect to
Server" window the user name and the password text boxes are disabled, so
I can't insert the new password...
Can you suggest what have I to do?
Thank you very much

OK.
I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and I installed it under "Local System" on Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate.
I understand that there are issues of course that occur with this, however I can't seem to understand why what I'm doing isn't working. I'm not using this on any server, just to test out ASP.NET 2.0 applications - nothing more.
I'm getting this error:
TITLE: Connect to Server

Cannot connect to RUSSPC.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. I've installed this via a mixed authentication (as suggested by www.wrox.com).
I tried enabling the TCP/IP and named pipe connections, just as previous people have done, but it hasn't worked. Nor has enabling the SQL Browser.
I'm really at a loss on what to do.

Is there any description on what the Remember Password check box on this dialog box does? As far as I can tell, it doesn't do anything. Every time I open an item from a project, or create a new Query, I get asked for the password, no matter how many times I have given it for the Server before.
It looks so useful, but is frustrating not knowing how to use it.
Thanks,

I have been successfully using SQL Server 2005 developer

when I started Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio this morning I could not
connect to the €śDatabase Engine€? (I€™m using Windows Authentication). I can still connect with the €śIntegration
Services€? and €śAnalysis Services€? on the same server. The server running on my local machine, so
there shouldn€™t be any problems with the network. I am also able to connect with it through
ODBC, it just seems to be the Server Management Studio which can€™t connect, and it only has
problems with the €śDatabase Engine.€? Any

I am running SQL 7.0 with Access 97 as a front end. I am having a problem linking one of the tables with an odbc connection. When I try to link the table, it gives me the error :
"The database engine can't find <name of table>. Make sure it is a valid parameter or alias name, that it doesn't include invalid characters or punctuation, and that the name isn't too long."
I have tried renaming the table, and it then will allow the connection, but if I rename it back to the original name, it doesn't work again. The table name is "Invoice_Line_Item". Changing the name permanently is not an option.
Has anyone else run across this problem, or know of a fix for it.

I have a very irritating error with Database Engine Tuning Advisor. While processing traces from Sql Profiler I keep getting trace log full of syntax error of most of queries - some of them very simple and ALL of them perfectly correct ( I check them separatly in QueryAnaliser ) - program gives recomendtation when I enter queries one by one - in that case the syntax is correct for Database Engine Tuning Advisor, but I just can't imagine why quries given to analysis in the set aren't correct? I dont' want to enter trace query by query (while I have thousends of them) !
It all seem like a Database Engine Tuning Advisor bug, any ideas about this problem?

I am trying to connect to a remote SQL server via Management Studio. I am using the windows credentials I use to log into the computer but when I enter the same domainusername and password I get error 18456. I check the logs and see it is a state 6 error. I am using the Configure Publishing and Distribution Wizard in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager to configure a server as a Distribution and Publishing server. The security configuration on the server in question for authentication is SQL Server and Windows NT.
When I get to the first page in the wizard I select that I want to use the server as the Distributor. The other option is to use another server for the Distribution server - and this isn't what I want to do. The next page presents the option to use the default settings to configure the distribution databases or to configure the setup. Something I have tried to change in order to fix this issue is the 'Replication agents on the Distributor log into the Publisher:' option from its default (By impersontating the SQL Agent account on 'SERVER1' (trusted connection)) to 'Using SQL Server Authentication of this account:', and in those fields I have put in 'sa' (which is a valid admin account to the SQL server) and the correct password.
In all cases I get the message above. Can anyone help me to see what I am doing wrong?
Thanks for your time,
Eric Gross

Hi All,
I have tried accessing a remote database in one of by stored procs using linked servers and also using OpenDataSource method.
In both the cases , I am getting login failed error.
Following is the stored proc :
CREATE PROCEDURE TEST AS
SELECT *
FROM OPENDATASOURCE(
'SQLOLEDB',
'Data Source=blrkec3432s;User ID=xyz;Password=xyz').LMC.dbo.STATE
GO
It works fine if the userid is 'sa'
Could anyone please tell me the reason for this.
Thanks,
Shanthi
