Error 26 Connecting To Remote SQL Server Instance

I am attempting something that I have done many times before; however, in this instance it continues to fail.
I am trying to connect Management Studio to an instance of SQL Server 2005 Express over a VPN. The Management Studio connect dialog always fails with Error 26.
I have:
Enabled the instance for remote connections €“ both TCP/IP and Named Pipes
Ensured that the instance is enabled for TCP/IP on the VPN address (10.2.1.1) and on port 1433
Ensured that the instance is running
Ensured that SQL Browser is running
Ensured that ports 1433 (TCP) and 1434 (UDP) are open on the firewall for inbound traffic
Rebooted the server following this configuration to ensure that the instance services are refreshed
Tried to connect from three separate clients (albeit on the same remote network)
Disabled the firewall to ensure no further complications (as a last resort)
I have this exact same setup functioning on a separate server.
There is an additional backstory to this problem; however, I will not complicate the scenario with it now. If you feel you can help then I can elaborate further on the server€™s history.

Can anyone tell me what are the necessary steps if I want to connect to a Remote SqlExpress Instance ? I am using Visual Studio 2005. When I tried to connect it says that the remote server does not allow remote connection. I have enabled all the protocols from Sql Server Configuration manager and disable the firewall. But it still not working. Pls Help me.

Greetings friends,
Not sure if this is the right place for my question but here goes anyway.
I have an instance of SQL Server 2005 installed on my DEV PC. A colleague of mine wants to access my server from his machine which connected to the same network.
I logged on to SSMS and added him as a new login.
Will he be able to connect to it now or do I have to do more than just that?
Your help would be appreciated.

Good afternoon,
I currently develop/maintain VB 05' apps for PDA's and desktops. I've got a scanner app that scans labels to build/transmit orders via an HTTP byte stream. I'm currently building an inventory app that resides at the remote client (windows not web) and can eventually connect to my SQL Server @ corp. At this point SQL 2005 endpoints work on the internal network but fail to resolve remotely. I've read about connecting to a SQL Server via HTTP with ip specs embedded in the connect string but havnt been able to find an example. Outside of creating a VPN for connectivity, can anyone recommend connection ideas for my scenario? Is it true that endpoints are only recommended for intranet consumption?

I can remote desktop and connect through SQL Management Express, but when I try this on my local machine I get the error 26
My knowledge is very limited and could do with some expert help

I read somewhere that in TCP/IP properties all IP's should be set to 1433, is this correct
at the moment, apart from ALL IP which is set to 1433, IP1-9 are set to Dynamic Port =0, should I be setting all these to 1433
??

I have been assigned to make a database in some remote machine.The machine has MSSQL 2005.I need to connect to that remote machine's sql server via my pc using my SQL Management express.I do have that computer's IP address(say,123.456.789.000),and the username and password.But when i try to connect to the server ,I get the following error:

My environment is Windows Server2003, ASP.NET 2.0, SQL Server 2000 using SQL authentication (names of DB's, sql id's, passwords are identical on both servers)
My web application successfully connects to my database the web app and the DB are both on the same server (10.144.25.9).This connection string works:

PROBLEM:
The problem occurs when the DB is mpved to the remote SQL Server (10.144.25.10). I use almost the identical connection string except for the IP address which is changed to the remote machine. The db name, user, password is same on remote machine as on the local, so everything should work but does'nt. This connection string fails:

There is no DBA on this project, I'm not sure this is a SQL Server set up problem?

I'm experiencing a problem connecting to a SQL 2000 server through my ASP code. My connection string is as follows:

The problem doesn't occur when I run my ASP code from my workstation using VS.NET's builtin webserver. It makes the connections and executes the CRUD commands successfully. However, when I publish my site to the webserver (which resides on 10.0.1.16) it fails out with the following error:
System.Data.Odbc.OdbcException: ERROR [08001] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.ERROR [01000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
I've verified that the webserver can talk to the DB server by connecting to the remote DB server through SQL Enterprise Manager running locally on the webserver. If I try to do this with a DSN I get the same results. I get the same error from any other webserver on the internal network. The difference between my workstation and the internal network is that I'm using a VPN to connect to our internal network while the webservers are physically connected to it. Firewalling isn't the issue in this case because the webservers and DB server are on a trusted network. I've seen other ways of connecting to the DB server including using Named Pipes (which I would rather not do because I don't want to setup a named pipe on the production db server).
I'm relatively new to ASP.NET 2.0, so the above connection string is an adaptation of some old ASP code. If anybody has any suggestions on a better way to construct this connection string, please let me know. I've been racking my brains trying to get this to work outside of the devel env.

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have SQL 05 and SQL 200o on same server . SQL 05 version is a named inatnce. But when i try to connect it from my computer first it doest show the name instance in the list and when i manulay write its name i got this error.

I am trying to connect to an instance of SQL Express through a vpn, simply using the SQL Management Studio, providing the server ip address x.x.x.xMSSQLSERVER, and using SQL authentication login. I receive the following message:
Cannot connect to <server>, etc., etc.
error 25: - Connection string is not valid
Does anyone understand this? I am trying to connect through the SQL Server Management interface, not with a client program that would utilize a connection string. Is there something which prevents Management Studio from working over a vpn?
To connect, I am using SQL authentication, and have verified the login and password locally on the target pc. The SQL browser service is running on the target pc, and I can telnet to the port which it is monitoring, through the same vpn connection. Remote connections are enabled for TCP/IP in the Surface Area configuration on the target pc.
Any help appreciated.

I have been reading every resource available out there about getting this connection to work. Can someone help me diagnose what the problem is? As the client, what ports do I need to have open? I'm using ReliableSite.net web hosting and trying to connect to their sql server.
I've also asked for help on their forum and opened a ticket to see if perhaps its listening on a different port, but they say its my issue.

I have a VB 2003 .NET application that I wrote for a customer that connects to a named instance of SQL 2000. Until recently it has been working fine. Lately the program either pops a timeout failure within a few seconds or a general network error. I've increased the connection timeout settings to 90 seconds but the error still pops within a few seconds. I'm thinking something has changed in the environment that prevents a clean connection to the named instance of SQL server.
How should this issue be troubleshoot to determine the problem and what areas need to be looked at?

We have installed SQL 2000 SP4 on Windows 2000 Server. We created named instances on the SQL server.
When trying to connect to named instances from a remote sql client which is on windows 2000 and windows 2003, its throwing an error message saying that remote connections are disabled.
But, remote connections are enabled on the SQL server.
After changing the component services settings on windows 2003 where sql client is installed, we are able to connect to named instances.
But, after applying the same settings on another windows 2003 machine, we are unable to connect to the same instances.
We have another machine where we installed SQL 2005 on windows 2003 SP1. When trying to connect to named instances from any remote client, its throwing an error message saying that remote connections are disabled. But, remote connections are enabled in SQL server settings. We tried connecting to the instances by changing the component services settings but still we are facing the same issues.
Can you please help me on above issues?

I've got a desktop and a notebook and both are connected to the router. On both I've got Sql Server Express and Sql Server Management Studio Express installed. I need to connect to a remote Sql Server (using user ID and password) which works fine on my desktop, but fails on my notebook: Error:0 and Error: 10060.
I checked all router settings and notebook settings, but I don't know what I am doing wrong. I got myself another notebook and installed Sql Server Express plus Management Studio, which did not work either.
Hopefully someone can help.

I have recently taken over as webmaster at my company and need help connecting to our remotely hosted SQL server. The company who is hosting it will charge me "support time" to explain how to connect to it.
The database is used to store data and application information for our customer service center. So it is ALL database driven...
i have installed SQL Server Enterprise Manager on my machine, but have no ideas on where to even being trying to connect. I have the name of the server, password....etc. But do not know where to configure a connection.
ALSO, when i install my Enterprise Manager the first options askes me whether i want to create a new instance of SQL server on a local or remote machine....i am guessing my local machine right...??
any insight or direction is greatly appreciated.

I have opened up a port on a remote SQL instance and can see that the port is LISTENING when using the PortQry tool. I have also set the TCP port in the TCP/IP properties in the IPAll section for that instance, yet I am unable to connect and get an error of
Connection Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed while attempting to consume the pre-login handshake acknowledgement. This could be because the pre-login handshake failed or the server was unable to respond back in time. The duration spent while attempting to connect to this server was - [Pre-Login] initialization=1; handshake=14998; (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I have done this on other instances, although they were default instances, and it has always worked fine.

First time I've tried doing this - I have SQL Server 2012 installed on my local machine with an instance running (which was set up under an administrator account, not mine, which has no admin rights), and I'm trying to create a linked table from Access (also on the local machine) to a table on the server.
I tried creating a DSN using Windows Authentication, using the server name which is the same as my computer name, and got the error "Error 18452, Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication".
I then created a SQL authentication user ID and password, and tried the same thing using that instead, and got "Login failed for user <myusername>"
Is there some particular setting on the local instance I need to change to allow this kind of connection, or do I need to use something other than the server name to connect, such as an IP address? Remember that I have no admin access on this machine so any solution would have to avoid requiring that.

I wrote a web app (vb.net) with mssql 2005 express edition DB.
I created a vs2005 setup project and added it to my app solution.
On my local computer it works fine (using IIS 5.1).
Now, I'm trying to deploy the app on a remote server (with mssql 2005 express edition installed) but when I try to run my app via the remote server's IIS, I get this Error message:

I am currently developing a 2.0 asp.net application from my home pc (Windows XP) and am trying to connect to a sql server on my host. This works fine at work but at home I just get the following error message:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Any ideas, i have even tried disabling my firewall to see if that made a difference.
Your help is much appreciated.

Hi guys ,I connect to internet using a proxy for example 122.158.190.5 : 8080 Most software read it from IE setting and in some cases I have to enter this proxy setting manually so that software can connect to the internet . I want to connect to a remote server using "SQL Server Management Studio" but it doesn't connect. And I couldn't find any proxy setting . How can I set this proxy setting ?And also I need to connect with may asp.net program to that remote server from my local computer how can I set this one ? Thank you in advance .

I was wondering if anyone knows how to connect with SQL Server over TCP/IP using ODBC
I tried using the IP address or domain name of the remote machine, but I get the following error:
Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver Version 03.70.0690
Running connectivity tests...
Attempting connection
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]General network error. Check your network documentation.
TESTS FAILED!

Hey guys, I am new to the SQL server scene and I am having some trouble connecting to a remote SQL Server with SQL Server Management Studio Express. I have the username, password, IP address, and port necessary to log in but am apparently not plugging them into the correct places. Can anyone at all point me in the right direction or somewhere that I might at least find the answer? I appreciate any help that can be provided.
