Login Failed For User '(null)' Error When Trying To Use Windows Authentication

Feb 6, 2006

I'm working on an ASP.NET project, and we're attempting to switch from SQL Server authentication to Windows authentication to connect to the database.
It works fine locally when I debug in Visual Studio, but when it hits the web server, I get the error: "Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
IIS has anonymous access disabled, and Integrated Windows Authentication is checked. The web.config file has:
<authentication mode="Windows"/><identity impersonate="true"/>
The database I'm attempting to access is on a different machine than IIS, and the connection string doesn't contain a username or password, and has "Trusted_Connection=Yes", and "Integrated Security=SSPI".
From what I've been able to find online, I'm guessing the problem is due to IIS and SQL Server residing on different machines, but I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any ideas?

Windows Authentication - Cannot Generate SSPI Context - Login Failed For User ''. The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL

May 29, 2007

We are looking at developing an SQL Server 2005 Database and I would like to use Windows Authentication rather than SQL Server Authentication to connect our client app.

In our development environment, we have two Servers, one being used as a file server and the other as an SQL Server. We have now set up a domain using the file server as the domain controller. (We had previously been set up to use a workgroup).

I have set up an active directory group called SqlDevelopers and added an active directory user called Jonathan to it.

On the SQL Sever, in management studio, I have set up a new server login which uses windows authentication called DomainSqlDevelopers. I used the GUI to verify I could see the domain and the group.

The default database is set to a test database on the server. A user in the test database is mapped to the DomainSqlDevelopers and given the Roles dbo, db_datareader, db_datawriter.

To test the log in, on the server, I logged out as administrator and in as Jonathan. I could successfully access the server through management studio using windows authentication.

However, if I log in as Jonathan on my client PC and try to access the SQL Server using management studio and windows authentication, I have problems.

The first time I try I will get a timeout error. If I try again will get either:

Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection

Or

Cannot generate SSPI context

I can€™t determine any pattern to which of the above errors I get.

However, if I log in as administrator on my client PC, I can connect to the server using management studio and windows authentication.

Sounds like Active Directory/Domain or other Network issue (Not really my area). I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks,

Jon

Creating A View With Detailed Informations

Mar 30, 2006

Hello,
I have a code for creating view in T-SQL. I want to ask you guys, i want to make this result set should grouped by DepoAdi column and StokKodu (this is an alias sure you can get it from code). Did i make it on group by line? My second problem is i want to add 2 columns to this query. This 2 column will calculate some values with SUM function and - operator. At CRM.Depolar.DepoBilgileri table i have a column named Miktar (this one stores int type datas) and i have a column named islemturu(this one stores 1 or 0). I want to calculate Miktar values which rows has islemturu column 0 and subtract them from which rows has islemturu column 1 value and this computing action must be based on Grouped columns.

DepoAdi | StokKodu | Miktar | IslemTuru
ABS SK101 5 0
ABS SK101 3 1
ABS SK102 4 0
ABS SK102 3 1

This is the table and i'm imaging view what i want now...

DepoAdi | StokKodu | Miktar
ABS SK101 2
ABS SK102 1

How can i add this resultset to my code..

Thanks for reading... Waiting your answers.. Happy coding...

User Authentication

Aug 21, 2006

I have figured out how to use MS SQL Server Management Studio for SQLServer 2005, including how to create users. At my client's offices, on my own LAN (a one man office with twocomputers in a peer to peer LAN - machines running the professionaledition of WXP), and on my colleagues computers (stand alonenotebooks), SQL Server was installed allowing both local and remoteconnections, and support for both Windows and SQL Serverauthentication. At my client's offices, both local and remote connections work. On ourrespective notebook computer/workstations only local connections work, unless we're connecting to our client's network, in which case remoteconnections work.So far, it would seem all is well. However, there are two issues.1) With regard to local connections on our notebooks, I can connect tothe default server using SQLCMD without specifying any command linearguments, while my colleages have to specify at least the machine andserver name. I don't understand why.2) On my peer to peer LAN, MS SQL Server Management Studio can not findthe other machine that is running SQL Server, and using SQLCMD, I can'tconnect to the other server when I provide the proper credentials for auser I set up on it to use SQL Server authentication. What should Ilook at in order to find out why this is and how to fix it?ThanksTed

User Authentication DB For ASP.NET V2.0 Website

Nov 26, 2007

I have created a website using Visual Studio 2005 that runs in ASP.NET v2.0. In the debugging mode of VS2005 the site works just great and I use the ASPNETDB.MDF database to hold all of my user authentication data. Since I have deployed the website over to a remote server the authentication no longer works. I can access the first page of my website that is a login page but as soon as I attempt to log in with a valid user I receive an error message as below:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I copied all of my files in the website folder over to the corresponding folder on the remote server. I then installed MS SQLServer Express on the remote server. I'm suspect the problem is something to do with that ASPNETDB.MDF file. Please can somebody help? Is there anything else I need to do for the website to work as it did on my local machine? I have given the NETWORK SERVICES user full access on the website folder.

Windows User With Server Authentication

I'm almost sure that it's not possible, but I wanted to ask in case that I'm missing something. Is it possible to get the Windows user when someone logins using SQL Server Authentication? I know how to get the hostname, but I can't find how to make the next step.By the way, do sleeping connections affect performance? Would they consume resources such as RAM or network?

Deploying A Website With User Authentication - Getting Errors

Nov 26, 2007

I have built a site that uses form-based authentication. Am I correct in assuming that the users and passwords will be stored in the SQLServer database in the aspnetdb.mdf file? The website works great and the authentication works how I want it to. However, I've tried to copy over the file onto a remote machine. The first page is a login screen and this is displayed without any problems but as soon as I attempt to log in I get an error message of:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When
connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under
the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider:
SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance
Specified)I'm wondering if this is something to do with the fact I installed SQLServer Express edition on the remote machine. The website works no problem on the local machine in debug mode of Visual Studio 2005 (Professional Edition). I followed instructions to enable remote connections on SQLServer Express from a Microsoft support doc. If anybody can point me in the right direction I'll be very grateful as I've hit a wall here.

Trying To Create A New User With Windows Authentication For My Sql Database

Dec 30, 2007

I have a website written in asp.net and the current DATABASE logins do not use windows authenticaton. They are for online use only with a username and password. I'm trying to run my program locally on my machine and access the database locally. This is very frustrating. I'm able to connect to my database, but I can't login to it. Here's my connection string from ym webconfig file:
<add name="sqlConnectionString" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" connectionString="Connect Timeout=8; Initial Catalog=linkexchanger; Data Source=SCOTSQLEXPRESS; "/>
I have the MSSQL engine running and I have connected with the SERVER. My database is in my directory tree of Microsoft SQL Management Studio Express. The server is SCOTSQLEXPRESSI have attempted to add a login to my sql database by right clicking on the security folder to create a new login. My understanding is that under windows, I don't need a uid and pwd in my connection string . Thus I tried removing all of this just as you see above, and I get an error message every single time I try to create a login with windows authentication.
Can someone please explain how I make this work?
Thank you.

Windows Authentication - Connecting To A DB As A Different User In Management Studio

Jun 28, 2007

Is there a way to connect to database using Windows authentication as a different user than what you've logged in with to your desktop?

For example:

I log on to my desktop as mydomainme. I'm developing queries using Management Studio against a database (on another server) where mydomainme doesn't have access, but the admins have granted access to mydomainJobs1. I have the password for mydomainJobs1, and I'm hoping I can connect to the database using that account without having to log-off my local desktop as mydomainme and then re-login using mydomainJobs1.

The analogy in the file/share-permissions world would be using "net use" from a command prompt:

net use \SomeServer /User:mydomainJobs1 jobs1password

Anything similar for SSMS?

Windows Authentication: User Name && Password Area Grayed Out And Unusable...

Aug 2, 2007

I'm trying to connect to a SQL Server 2005 database engine on a local network server. When I am presented with the Connect to Server dialog box, if I select Windows Authentication from the Authentication drop-down, the User name & Password area is grayed out and unusable. The domain user account I'm authenticated with is visible, but grayed out, and the password field is blank and unusable. I'd like to be able to connect as described in help:

User name

Enter the user name to connect with. This option is only available if you have selected to connect using Windows Authentication.

I can connect with either SQL Server or Windows authentication... but with Windows Authentication I'd love to be able to type a specific user name to select with :-)

Intranet, Windows Authentication, Sql Server Login Failed For User '(null)'

Mar 31, 2006

Hi--
I am building an intRAnet website using windows authentication for website access and SQL Server access ( Trusted_Connection = true ).
In IIS I have these settings:

Allow Anonymous = unchecked (false)
Windows Authentication = Checked (true)
Digest windows = checked (true)
In my Web.Config file:

authentication="windows"
impersonate="true"
allowusers="*"
When I pull up the page these are my credentials:
Security.Principal.Windows: mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page)
Me.User.Identity: mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page)
Threading.currentThread.currentUser mydomainmyuserid (this is correct what it shows on my page)

So the ASP.NET page recognizes it is me and my domain. However, when i click a button to pull some data from a database I get the error message: Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
My data access on SQL Server works fine. The weird thing is when I debug on my machine it pulls data fine. but when I copy the files to the windows 2003 server it doesn't work.
Do i have to do something with delegation?

Failed DTS Package Locks User Out Of SQL2005 (Windows Authentication) ... For Good!

Feb 13, 2006

Would be interested in any advice or comment on the issue we are experiencing with SQL 2005.

In order to test some DTS package migrations, we simply created a DTS package on SQL 2000 (using Export) to copy all database objects from one database to another.

Then we restored the source database on SQL 2005 server, migrated the DTS package, and tried to execute it.

The package migrated 'fine', ran part way, and then failed. Since then we have been unable to connect to the server (Database Engine, or Integration Services) using Windows Authentication. (Error 18456, Sev 16, State 11).

We can connect to the Database Engine using SQL Authentication (but not to Integration Services which only allows Windows Authentication).

We have been able to replicate this consistently - every annoying time we've tried it!

(Reinstalling SQL Server does 'fix' the issue ... until you try a similar package again).

(2)how a user can change his password in advance of the expiration date with no particular server-level permission.

Linked Server Authentication Error - [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7303)

May 5, 2008

Hi Guys:

Our company wanted to try out SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition (64 Bit). So, we were on free trial of the Enterprise Edition for past 5 months. After which we decided to go for SQL SERVER 2005 Standard Edition (64 Bit). And, Last week, we installed the SQL Server Standard Edition (64 Bit) on our server. After installation, everything was restored as before.

The version we are on right now is:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (X64) Mar 23 2007 18:41:50 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

Strangely, a job which ran fine till then is failing with the following error: And, to be more specific, when this job is run manually in the form of a stored procedure using the query optimizer it runs fine. But, when its executed as a scheduled job on SQL Agent, it fails. The History logs record the following error.

Error :

The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2" reported an error. Authentication failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7399) Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2". [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7303) OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2" returned message "Invalid authorization specification". [SQLSTATE 01000] (Error 7412).

I tried everything possible, even recreated the job, but, no avail.

I also considered the possibility if SQL Agent login account did not have enough permissions. So, I changed the SQL Agent login to windows authentication, but the job still fails. So, its the problem has nothing to do with login accounts either.

For the record, I have cross checked all these too.

1. Enabled the remote connections in Surface Area Config

2. Added local server login to remote server login mappings.

3. Checked 'Rpc' and 'Rpc Out' under server options. Also, the Connection Timeout and Query Timeout have been set to zero (0).

Any suggestions pointing towards problem solution appreciated.

Thank you.

Is There A Way To Show A User-friendly Error When User Did Not Select A Required Parameter ?

Apr 9, 2007

Hi all,

I was wondering whether there is a way to show the user an error when the user did not select a specific parameter.

In my case, I have two optional parameters. The user has to select either one to view the report. If the user does not select either one, I would like to show some sort of an error page indicating so. However, all i am getting is a complete blank with no report in sight. I as a developer know this is an error as a result of missing parameters, but i was wondering whether I could produce a page or direct it to a page so that the user doesn't go all horrified at an empty page ?

Thanks

Bernard

[298] SQLServer Error: 18452, Login Failed For User ''. The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL Server Connection.

Mar 11, 2008

I received the above error yesterday and haven't been able to trace it to any job or process running. We haven't implemented any changes to the server in the past few months, and it doesn't look to be a user-established connection, since the Client IP Address of the SSPI handshake error is from the server itself.

I logged this set of messages in SQL AgentServer error log:

Ok, so here's the catch. It works one 1 machine, a co-workers machine. I can login as any user and it'll work fine. But when I try it on any other machine, including my laptop, my desktop, my server, etc. I get that error. I've tried adjusting the IE Security settings, firewall settings, even tried different browsers. Here's some of the stuff installed on my machines:

Laptop
-Windows XP Pro
-ASP.NET Validation Tool
-Visual Basic Express w/ SQL Server Express
-.NET 1.1/2.0 Framework

Desktop
-Windows XP Home
-Visual Studio 2005 Professional
-.NET 1.1/2.0 Framework

Server
-Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
-SQL Server 2005
-.NET 1.1/2.0 Framework

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Even our lead developer has no clue, it won't work on his machine either!
