I am setting up a database for the first time using SQL Server Express.
I have managed to create a database and create a table with data etc, all straight forward.
The problem I am having is when I come to creating a user for the database. I have the following users in there already, which I am guessing are put in by default:
dbo
guest
INFORMATION_SCHEMA
sys
When I try creating a new user via this screen I get the following error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
------------------------------

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.3042.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Create+User&LinkId=20476

I was wondering if anybody could advise me as to what I'm doing wrong. I am typing in the name as "growstudiouser" and the login name as "growstudio".
Or am I just using the wrong section to do what I want. I'm trying to create a user so that when the database is built I can connect to it using a username and password that I have created. I'm not sure I'm taking to the correct route as there is no password option anywhere when creating a new user.
I get an error dialog when I try to create a new SQL database, both via the Add New Item dialog and the property wizard of a new SqlDataSource control. The error is:
Local Database File:
User does not have permission to perform this action.
I've searched for help with this.
I ensured the App_Data folder exists and I added the local ASP.NET account to the group that have R/W access to it (although the RO flag is in an unchangeable tri-state on the folder). The SQL Server Express error log is clean and indicates full functionality. Everything is running locally. No VWD installation errors.
Hi,I just installed mySQL on MS NT 4.0 workstation and applied Service Pack6a. When trying to add a new user using the Control Center I get aninfo message that say that user was added but this is followed by anerror message that says:There is no such grant defined for user 'username' on host 'hostname'Does anyone know what is going on here? Please respond in email. Thanks,Paul
How do I create a user that has full access to a database using only SQL statements?
I've create very basic database called "sampledb".
Then I've done:
CREATE LOGIN sampleuser WITH PASSWORD = '123sampleuser', DEFAULT_DATABASE = sampledb; USE sampledb; CREATE sampleuser FOR LOGIN sampleuser WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = 'db_owner';
Then I logon to SQL server express 2005 management studio using this user, first of all I do not see the sampledb database listed under "databases" even though it is selected in the "available databases" toolbar (how do I list it there? Because going through "attach..." tells me I do not have the privileges to browse for the database to attach).
I then open up a new query (sampledb is selected), and type (products is one of the table in sampledb): select * from products;
And I get:
Msg 229, Level 14, State 5, Line 1
The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'Products', database 'sampledb', schema 'dbo'.
Shouldn't the chosen schema (db_owner) give me the right to do this? And how do I fix this from the query window (without going through the GUI, just using SQL statements)? And how do I list sampledb under the databases when I log in as this user?
I'm not a DBA, so I don't know where to look for information on this.
In SQL Server 2005, I can simply no longer create a user for the database I created. It asks that the user be associated with a login. That login is found in the Security folder of the database instance.
The question is: what is this instance security folder for? I don't recall having to do this in SQL Server 2000.
Any elaboration or links to such information would be appreciated.
Looks like Using Schema in SQL Server 2005 gives enough fucntionality to control persimission on pre-created objects and database. here is my scenario....
I want to have Users that can only create new databases and then have FULL control on that database that they create, like creating table, inserrting, deleting, updating, etc etc.
what will be best steps to have this scene.
(I have created a user and made it a memeber of DBCREATOR, but that user is unable to create any table inside database that is created by that user),
Any help is highly appreciated. I am using SQL 2005
The requirement is to customize database admin activities by creating new user group.
Need to create a group of user / dbauser1 which will have restriction in seeing the data but they should be able to alter database - add / remove the data file , increase or decrease the data file space when required.
This requirement came we wanted to create a new dba group they should not be able to any user data / any table but increase / decrease / add / modify space etc.
i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database. When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and push 'Test connection' button. everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things, from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore.... it only work when i restart the computer.
im creating a ecommerce website, and i need to create a database, im using visual studio .net and when i try to create a new database using VS.net i choose "use sql server authentication" and no matter what i type in for the login id, i get the following ado error
"ADO Error : ' Login failed for user "blank". Reason. Not associated with a trusted SQL server connection.'
How can I create a new database on sql server using OSQL command incommand prompt. I have the sql file for database creation and I use thefollowing commandC:> osql -S servername -U sa -i db1.sqlit prompt my for password n i enter it since sa has a blank passwordbut after that it returns the following error.1> 2> 3> Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Server servername, Procedure ,Line 2[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Line 2: Incorrectsyntax near 'COLLATE'.1> 2> 3> Msg 15010, Level 16, State 1, Server servername, Proceduresp_dboption, Line 95[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The database'db1' does not exist. Use sp_helpdb to show available databasesCan anyone help me on that?
I'm using Visual Studio 2008 and i guess the sql server comes with it is the 2005 express version. So, my problem is: when i try to create a new database diagram on a new .mdf database, i get the error "Invalid String Class". I believe this has something to do with some unregistered dlls, but i dont know how to solve... Any help?
I was getting following error while creating a database or attaching a database to sql server 2005
"The file <<*.mdf>> is compressed but does not reside in a read-only database or filegroup.."
In this scenario, if you try sp_attach_db procedure, you get following error: Msg 5118, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
After little bit of troubleshooting, I found this was happening because of a folder option (of the folder where database file reside (in case of attach) or being created (in case of create)).
Go to folder properties, General Tab, click on Advanced button, check "Compress or Encrypt attributes" section. If the first option (Compress contents to save disk space) is checked, you get that error. Uncheck it to fix that problem.
I would like to limit the role of an user In Visual Studio only to assign roles to other users for the cubes. Other than that the user should not be able to create / delete the exisiting cubes or dimensions.
I created database using SQL server and runs under Cassini. The creation of database is ok but I have a problem when I am creating the table in database. Whenever I execute the code to create the tables, it shows the error message like 'Server not found' or just hang there. Does anybody know why it hang while I am creating the table? Is it because of the code or it's the time out error. Pls help as I am very new to this area.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out. I was trying to migrate access database to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition via Studio Express. I have also used SMAA for Access to migrate it to SQL Server 2005.
HOwever, i got trouble when creating new database in the studio Express. The following below is the error messages.

Hi, I'm using VS2005, .NET Framework Version 2.0.50727 on Windows Vista Business. I wish to implement a database in my mobile device which is using Windows CE 5.0, .NET Compact Framework 3.5 Beta, which version of SQL server should I install into the device? In MS Visual Studio, when creating a new Report Model Project, after defining a datasource to an Oracle database (and successfully testing it), and a simple datasource view (1 table), when I click "Run" in Report Model Wizard, I receive the following error: "ORA-02179: valid options: ISOLATION LEVEL { SERIALIZABLE | READ COMMITTED }"
It does not appear that one can create Report Models from an Oracle database (since the SQL being used to query the Oracle database cannot be edited and contains syntax errors?). Is this the case?
I have the code below that will insert the record to the database. The code works fine, until I try to add the current user thats logged on and then I try to submit the values to the database and it gives me this errorIncorrect syntax near the keyword 'user'.and highlights this line.MyCmd.ExecuteNonQuery() Thanks

I work with Microsoft visual studio 2005. i get data from a table by ADO.NET :
SqlConnection sqlConn = new SqlConnection(strConnectionString); sqlConn.Open(); .....
it works fine.
but when i open the SQL Server 2005 express edition and connect to the server (inside the same computer) and run the code again ,the Open() function fails with the exception :
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
disconnecting the server doesn't help and even closing the SQL Server 2005 application doesn't help. Only restarting the computer enables the Open() command to work again.
When I select 'SQL database' from 'Add new item ' (either in Visual C# or Visual Web Developer express) I get the following errror: "Login failed for user'.
My OS is Vista.
I've tried reinstalling SQL Server express, but I still get the same error.
Ok so I'm using the Management Studio Express and was able to log in and get into the database server, but I had to click the "options>>" button and change database I wanted to connect to from <<default>> to my database on the server or else I get the "cannot open user database, login failed" error message. Then I right click my database and it gives me the "Cannot open user database. Login failed" error message, even though I already connected to the database to login during the connect screen. Also I'm able to interact with the database using SQL QUERIES in the Management Studio, like adding new tables with it, but if I right click the database and click "add table" I get that error. What gives? I know I have permission since I was able to log on, and modify the database using SQL queries but if use the GUI I can't use it. I can't even right-click select "properties" without getting that error. The reason I want to use the GUI is because I want to right click and use the backup feature of the database. My guess is that Management Studio continues to point to the default database(which gives me that message) after I already logged in, so I have no idea how to change the default database that management studio points to, to the one I do have permission to use. Thanks in advance.
When I connect to SQL Server 2000 using SQL Server authentication I get error message error 4064, cannot open user default database. I can connect however if I use Windows Authentication. The problem started when I did the ffg. -backup sql db1 -restore db1 to another name (db2) -drop db1 -use sp_detach -use sp_attach to attach db2 as db1 (rename database)
When I connect in Query Analyzer via SQL Authentication I get the error, however via any other method it works fine.
I used a backup copy of our production DB (residing in our prod machine) to do a database RESTORE to our test DB (residing in our test machine). This step was successful. However when I tried to access the test DB via Peoplesoft application, I am unable to logon. Only then did I notice that all the users, with the exception of "sa", were gone. When I attempted to add a user via Enterprise Manager's Action - Add Database User, I get the message, "Error 15023: User or role '%' already exists in the current database. What's the best way to fix this without resorting to copying the source server's master database (If i do this, I risk clobbering some other DB's that are present in the target server but not in source server)? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!!!
