Error Handling W/o Using Cursors In SQL Server 2K
Jan 13, 2008
Hi,
I've the following program structure:
For every record
-- insert into table1
-- insert into table2
....
if I encounter an error in the table1 insert, is there any way (other than using cursors) to continue processing the next record?
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Has anybody had any luck using the Microsoft SQLServer ODBC drivers (Driver version: 03.81.9030, ODBC version : 03.52)
to connect to a SQL Server 2000 database and passing in a SELECT with a FOR XML clause. I keep
getting Error [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The FOR XML clause is not allowed in a CURSOR statement
., State: 42000, Error: 6819.
Is there a work around (eg putting the select in a stored procedure) or am I missing something ?
I am using SQLExecDirect() to execute the statement.
Or could any one suggest a better way to retrieve data from a standard table in XML formated string?
Please Help!!

Hi I think by virtue of not being able to find reference to this I have my answer however.... You trap an error, check it and know that you are happy with it - it isn't an issue. Is it possible to prevent that specific error (number, message - the lot) being passed to the client so developers don't need to handle the error a second time? Ta db chucks :D

I'm taking the liberty to announce the availability of a suite of articles on my web site about error and transaction handling in SQL Server. In total there are three main parts and three appendixes.
The first part is a short jumpstart, while Part Two is a long in-depth discussion of what can happen in SQL Server in case of an error and what commands that are available. Part Three covers implementation and has lot of examples as well as a facility for logging and raising errors.
The appendixes cover special areas: linked servers, the CLR and Service Broker.

We have several jobs that if any step fails, we need to continue with the next step. Due to this we have the both 'On Success Action' and 'On Failure Action' set to 'Go to the next step'. Our only issue is that when all the steps are done we still require the job itself to fail.
So my question is this, is there anyway the status of a job can be queried to determine if any of it's steps failed?

We have trigger on a table. The trigger implementation is to insert a record in another table. If any error occurred in the trigger then the trigger should log the error to a file on the file system.
CREATE TRIGGER [myTRIGGER] ON [dbo].[MyTest]
AFTER INSERT
AS
declare @errorcode int;
INSERT INTO MySecondTable (id, myvalue) values (null, 'hey')
set @errorcode=@@ERROR
if (@errorcode <>0)
print 'Error occurred with error code "' + CONVERT(varchar, @@ERROR) + '"'
Problem
If the insert statement fails, for example because of a null violation, then trigger aborts and never reaches the next step in the trigger T-SQL code.
IS this a limitation or there's somthing wrong on the above code?
Thanks

Hi,
I would like to transfer data from an oracle database to SQL server database 2000. I am using DTS Export/ Import Wizard for this purpose.
My queries are:
1. How can I write the write the Start time, End time, data records that failed to a log file with minimal amount of coding. (I found that Active X scripts can be written although the coding is quite complex).
Can I get some kind of pointers to simple coding that can ensure I log time of run of DTS and errors if they occurred.
2. There is an error log written by DTS, but this is written only if an error occurs and the details of error are not written. I am looking to log successful transfers too. Can the DTS package be modified, with minimal code to achieve this objective?
3. I tried scheduling the DTS through the Edit window that SQL Server 2000 provides but am not able to change the time of schedule.
How do I schedule it?
Thanks,
Karthik

I'm trying to get to grips with the formview control and have a problem regarding where an exception is raised if SQL server raises an error when an insert is taking place. I am new to both asp.net & c#
I have put the following code in the SqlDataSource2_Inserted & Formview1_Inserted events as a way of determining where the exception is raised:
if (e.ExceptionHandled){ string exceptionmessage = e.Exception.Message; lblStatus.Text = exceptionmessage;}
These two events are the only one's that have the ExceptionHandled and Exception properties.
I run the code with data that will raise a duplicate key error from SQL Server but the error is not being caught by either of these two handlers. All I get is a page that starts with
Server Error in '/SourceCode' Application.
Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'IX_reftblAntigens'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'reftblAntigens'.The statement has been terminated.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'IX_reftblAntigens'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'reftblAntigens'.The statement has been terminated....
Is there somewhere else I should be looking to handle this sort of thing? I thought using the databound controls would make life easier but I'm actually finding it more of a pain than coding everything myself.

Hello,
I would like to supress an Informational error that SQL is returning when I run a stored proc that I created. The error message returned is:
Warning: Null value eliminated from aggregate.
The values returned from the stored proc are the results from a 'select * from #tmp_tbl". Before returning the values, I simply create the temp table, populate it and then run the select statement. Prior to getting my results, I get the error message. Can I suppress it and how?
Thank you.

Hello:
I tried to synchronize the SQL 2000 database with the SQL mobile server on PDA with SQL server management studio from SQL 2005. I got the error as €œThe buffer pool is too small or there are too many open cursors. HRESULT 0x80004005 (25101) €?. The SQL database file size is 120MB.
I create the .sdf file on PDA with the following C# code:
string connString = "Data Source='Test.sdf'; max database size = 400; max buffer size = 10000;";
SqlCeEngine engine = new SqlCeEngine(connString);
engine.CreateDatabase();
I think the 400MB max database size and 10000KB max buffer size are big enough to hold that SQL database data and I have already successfully synchronized my PDA with another smaller SQL server database file. I have been kept trying and searching this for couple of days and still can not figure it out.
Moreover, the synchronization always stops at the same table.
Please help and a lot of thanks in advance.

I am writing a stored procedure that loads transaction logs to a database and I am having trouble trapping meaningful error messages. When ever the load fails, it gives me two error messages, the first one is meaningful and the second one just states that the load ended abnormally. Unforunately, when I capture the error using @@error after the load statement, it is the second error message that I am getting.
Is there anyway to trap the first error message as well?
Thanks

I currently have defined a source server, a transformation, and a destination server using DTS. How and where do I create an error routine that would capture any and all errors that would occur. This would include connection error, transformation errors etc. I know the errors can be written out to a text file but I would like them written to a table on my destination server.
The DTS package will be called from an external program using the xp_cmdshell extended stored procedure. We are using it this way as a flag so if one transformation fails it will return a 1. If all are successful it will return a O. These will be our flags to check the errors table in the destination server.
Could someone tell me where this code is to go and what the code will look like. Samples would be the most help.
Thanks
Tom

I have a composite unique key on the audit_hub table that includes TimeStamp, UID, Type, Mailbox all as part of the unique key.
I’m trying to do inserts, and know that in some cases I will violate unique index.
I’m using stored procedure, and want to handle the error gracefully there – just move on.
Reading from text-based log files via .vbs and get back the nasty popup window.
Looks like I have it right but obviously I don’t considering how it’s (not) working.
I thought error handling would be the simplest way to avoid dupe records. Might be necessary to run the same log in more than once, and only want to add the new records since the last insert session.
Here’s what I have. It obviously simply halts and complains immediately after the insert attempt.
ALTER procedure eml_HubInsert
@TimeStamp bigint
,@UID varchar(255)
,@Type varchar(255)
,@MailBox varchar(255)
,@ServerID varchar(50)
as
insert into audit_hub (TimeStamp,UID,Type,Mailbox,ServerID)
values (@TimeStamp,@UID,@Type,@MailBox,@ServerID)
if @@ERROR = 2601
begin
return 0
end

I have some stored procedures that insert information from a third party plugin that hooks into our database (so I can't do any client side validiation). The problem I am encountering is that some of the fields I use need to be in DateTime format. In order for SQL SERVER 2000 to be able to insert this field, the Date has to be in the correct syntax or an error is thrown.
Is there any way to do something like this in SQL SERVER 2000
Code:
DELCARE @SomeDate DateTime
Try
Set @SomeDate = CONVERT(DateTime, Parameter1, 101)
Catch
return custom error describing what field is formatted
wrong and exit stored procedure
END

ppl,
i wrote this sql, seems v.straightforward to me.
It works first time round, sets the foreigh key, but second time round should error out to the handler - but it just reports the errors to the message out and dosn't seem to fire the errhandler.
Its gotta be a simple mistake - perhaps you could show me.
DECLARE @ErrorMsg int
BEGIN TRANSACTION
ALTER TABLE TPH_GlobalProductHierarchy
ADD CONSTRAINT SalesSubGrp_fk FOREIGN KEY (SalesSubGroupingID)
REFERENCES TPH_SalesSubGrouping (ID)
SET @ErrorMsg =@@ERROR
IF @ErrorMsg <>0 GOTO ErrorHandler
PRINT 'Success'
COMMIT TRANSACTION
ErrorHandler:
IF @ErrorMsg <> 0
BEGIN
PRINT 'Rollback'
ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
END

Hi all,
I am calling some stored procedures from ASP. These strored procedures have to deal with lots of deletes and updates. So i have thought of implementing transaction commits and rollbacks. But if a rollback occurs in these stored procedures, i want to get a value back to asp page, based on this value i will run the next stored procedure.
Can anybody give me some examples for doing this.
Somebody please help me with this!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a lot in advance,

hello. below is a very simple SP i have coded to insert a user into my database. i have created a unique index for the username column on my database table. if the username already i want to convey this to my C# code which is attempting the insert. i am using a combination of TRY/CATCH, RAISERROR and @@ERROR here to achieve my aim. could somebody please look at my code and tell me if the error handling code is OK, or is it overly complicated?

FirstName,
Surname,
DateBirth,
Email,

@Id_Country)
END TRY

SELECT @Error = @@ERROR;
IF @Error = 2601

ELSE
RAISERROR('An unknown error occurred.', 15, 1)

I have a stored procedure that inserts a new record into a table. The table it inserts into has a unique constraint that utilizes an identity column. Occassionally, this constraint gets violated due to the fact that the app running my stored procedure isn't the only application inserting into the table. Ideally, we would want to change the design to avoid this scenario but these are legacy applications that will eventually be sunsetted. My question is this; is there a way to handle the unique key constraint violation and prevent an exception being thrown in the app calling the stored proc? I know I can check for the error code and handle it within the stored proc but my app still gets an exception caught by the calling method. Can I prevent this from happening? I want for the insert to attempt again and if successful continue processing and not produce the exception. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
