Restoring Database Leaves Me With (Restoring...) Message
Jan 9, 2007I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)
Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.
Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.
Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?

I have one backup file of one database, I want to restore the database to server using that backup file. But when I tried to restore the database using that backup file, the query executed successfully, but in management studio at the database it is showing the message like 'Restoring the database'. The database i am trying to restore is about 2.71gb memory. I executed the query 4hrs back but still it is showing same message that it is getting restored. Why it is showing like this. Please help me to solve this problem.

Error On Restoring Database
Nov 16, 2007I did the full backup of .7 TB database about 2 weeks ago and did full restore with norecovery mode and then i did differential backup of about 100 gb and tried to restore but it is showing following error :
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: This differential backup cannot be restored because the database has not been restored to the correct earlier state. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
While restoring the files are different than original database files

I have a phisical device called 'respaldo.bak' inside this file there are three backups of three different databases, The first one is database called 'innovasoft' the second one is 'modelo_de_datos' and the last one is 'Inversiones'.
If I perform a restore of the first one there is no problem, but, when i try to restore the second o third database i get the following error:

I have to say that i want to restore the database with a different name that's why in the error says 'PROBANDO' , i'm really concern about this problem because it means that i have no backups for my data. I used to use this procedure on sql server 2000 every single day without problems, but on sql server 2005 it doesn't work properly.

Error Restoring Database
Jul 25, 2007When attempting to restore a database, I get the following error:
'Cannot open backup device, (filename).bak, Operating system error 5, access is denied.'
I get similar errors when attempting to attach the database file, it shows up in the Mngt. Tool as 'read only'.
This error does not occur when restoring the same .bak file to other pc's. On the problem pc, we have completely uninstalled and reinstalled Sql Express and Mngt. Tool Express. It occurs whether logged in as full administrator or other user.
Strange Error Restoring Database
Jul 9, 2001Hi all.
I was just restoring one database and creating another concurrently on the same server. The restore took longer than the create due to the respective sizes.
After the create had finished (done in Query Analyzer) I went back to the restore to see how it was getting on (running in Enterprise Manager).
There was an error (which I didn't record exactly - DOH!) along the lines of "could not obtain a lock on the model database, restore terminating abnormally."
I guess the create had model locked while it was creating the default objects, but what was a *restore* doing needing the model database anyway?
Any comments would be interesting.

Nov 20, 2004I m a student and i m doing a project on Datamining. I have to mine data of a company. the issue is that the company uses Microsoft SQL server as there DBMS. they backed up there data and gave it to me with schema (schema is separate and data backup is a backup generated through the backup option in SQL server Enterprise Manager). Now i created tables through query analyzer (i think) and then through enterprise manager i tried to restore that backup on my personal pc and i get an error .

Error Restoring Database With Diff & Inc Backups
Sep 10, 2007I backup a database at the begining of each month with a full and then do nightly diffs on it.
For the same database I run daily fulls and 10 minute log backups.
these two backups create / append to two different backup files.
The problem im having is that I cant restore the Differential backup set. SQL seems to restore the full just fine but alwasy throws an error when its about to start to retore the last diff. now forgive me but I clicked OK on the message and I cant find any record of the error in the logs but its something like:
"SQL cannot restore the database as the database has not been restored to the previous correct state"
is my 10 min TS log backups screwing up the DIff chain somehow?
this is really doing my head in. any help appreciated.

Error Message While Creating Table In The Database

I created database using SQL server and runs under Cassini. The creation of database is ok but I have a problem when I am creating the table in database. Whenever I execute the code to create the tables, it shows the error message like 'Server not found' or just hang there. Does anybody know why it hang while I am creating the table? Is it because of the code or it's the time out error. Pls help as I am very new to this area.

There are times when the database (SQL 7.0) cannot be accessed ( backup, routine maintenance, etc....) from asp page.
In those cases i am getting an ugly asp error message.
Is there a way ( code ) which will trap that error and return a nicer custom message for user or something like that.

Error Message Using Copy Database Wizard

Every time I try to run "Copy DatabaseWizard" I get an error message saying I must be a member of thesysadmin group and have permission to copy files over the network. Aug 29, 2006Ok so I'm using the Management Studio Express and was able to log in and get into the database server, but I had to click the "options>>" button and change database I wanted to connect to from <<default>> to my database on the server or else I get the "cannot open user database, login failed" error message.Then I right click my database and it gives me the "Cannot open user database. Login failed" error message, even though I already connected to the database to login during the connect screen. Also I'm able to interact with the database using SQL QUERIES in the Management Studio, like adding new tables with it, but if I right click the database and click "add table" I get that error.What gives? I know I have permission since I was able to log on, and modify the database using SQL queries but if use the GUI I can't use it. I can't even right-click select "properties" without getting that error. The reason I want to use the GUI is because I want to right click and use the backup feature of the database.My guess is that Management Studio continues to point to the default database(which gives me that message) after I already logged in, so I have no idea how to change the default database that management studio points to, to the one I do have permission to use. Feb 11, 2005I've got code that on my own machine (visual studio .net 2003 and iis and sql server all exist on this box) works great. I display my test page, which loads a dropdownlist on page_load. This works great on my own machine.
When I move the code to our dev environment. Web server and database servers on separate boxes. I get the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when i try to open the connection to the database. I thought it had to do with permissions and I check all through sql server and everything looks great. I then thought it was the connection string. I still haven't ruled this out, but I wrote a quick vbscript app to attach to the database and try to pull a record. The vbscript worked fine. So, the code works fine on my computer, but not on the web server. The connection does work with vbscript, but through my asp.net web app I get the "object reference" error.

The package works fine on the developed server but when I try it out on our integration server it won't go through without these errors. The protection level is set on DontSaveSensitiv and allready I had an error less.

Urgent DataBase Restore Logfile Path Error Message
May 8, 2007I am having difficulty restoring a database (DB_1) with 2 datafiles and one log file, DB Structure is as following:
Filegroup PRIMARY with file name 'fnm_data' with physical file name and location D:dbfile_1.mdf,
Filegroup 'FG1' with file name 'fgnm1_data1' with physical file name and location F:dbfile_FG1.mdf,
One log file with file name 'fnm_log' with physical file name and location (E:loglog_db.ldf)
{Note} Logfile resides on E drive whereas Datafiles reside on several other drives.
I need to restore the DB on another machine. And I need to move the log file to a drive other than E.In this case it is K drive. Hence I have used the following code,

When I try to restore from backup files, I keep error message saying "Physical file name E:loglog_db.ldf may be incorrect." 'fnm_log' cannot be restored. Use Move command to identify a valid location for the file.
Even though I am using Move command to move the log file.
Then I found that if I create a drive with E: and a folder named 'log' then restore program runs alright. That is, when E:log exists then code does run smoothly. All the restore code is looking for the presence of path of the log file from where it is been backed up. In this case it is E:log folder. Once the database is restored I could kill that directory and nothing happens. Also log file has been restored on K:DB only.
Why the restore code is looking for the initial drive letter and path even though I have used Move command? Is there an issue in my code?
Any help will be highly appreciated.

Mar 20, 2008I installed SQL 2005 including backward compatibility, MSDN libraries and SP2 a new Windows 2003 server (chose mixed mode authentication). Installation was successful and I then installed an off the shelf database with Windows authentication which also installed successfully.
I created a new group in AD, added the database users into the group and gave db-owner rights to the group in SQL as advised by the installation guide. However, when I try to open the database it gives an error message saying "Cannot open database.[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).] SQL server does not exist or access denied". I also tested it adding an individual user (myself) as a user to no avail.
When I set up DSN in ODBC on my computer I can successfully test the connection but can't run the application. The connection is via TCP/IP.
Any suggestions?

I have an File System Task that copies a file from one directory ot another. When I hard code the target directory (c:dirfile.txt) it works fine. When I change it to a virtual directory (\serverdirfile.txt) I get a security error:
[File System Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Access to the path '\gracehbtest oS2TMM_Live_Title_000002.xml' is denied.".
Where do I change the security settings?

Aug 18, 2006I'm trying to use an XML Task to do a simple XSLT operation, but it fails with this error message:
[XML Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "There are multiple root elements. Line 5, position 2.".
The source XML file validates fine and I've successfully used it as the XML Source in a data flow task to load some SQL Server tables. It has very few line breaks, so the first 5 lines are pretty long: almost 4000 characters, including 34 start-tags, 19 end-tags, and 2 empty element tags. Here's the very beginning of it:

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Restoring A Database Even If No Database Or Backup Encryption
Sep 3, 2014I did tried the encryption on server "A" for database "AdventureWorks2012". Then I tried to restore to server "B". There was the certificate issue, and I thought "of course : it's encrypted ! Let's deactivate it". So here I go "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2012 SET ENCYRPTION OFF".I look at sys.databases : not encrypted.I backup using no encryption, I verify using msdb.dbo.backupset : not encrypted.
I move my backup to my other server where encryption was never configured (so no certificate, nothing...), and I have the error :
Msg 33111, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Cannot find server certificate with thumbprint '0xFA130E58C999C4919B8975999C83A75A403B11D8'.

SQL Server 2014 :: Restoring Database Programmatically But Not Over Existing Live Database
Aug 6, 2015I want to restore a database (from an encrypted .bak file) - but *not* over the live original if you take my meaning. Encryption is the standard AES-256 that comes with Sql Server 2014 btw. I don't want the original touched/altered in any way. I would like to capture a success message if possible.I can extract the physical device name of the database in question using the following code:

Over the last 2 months I have gotten this SQL Server error (twice). All existing processes will continue to work, however no new processes can be created and users cannot connect to the server. This is the exact text of the message in the SQL Server error log.

While we can typically just stop SQL Server Service and restart the services...I have found it is best to restart the machine during non-production times to take care of any 'residual' effects of this error.
The SQL Server 2000 SP4 box with Windows 2003 Standard SP1 is well maintained by our I.T. team and it typically will run 4 or 5 months without a reboot.

Error While Calling The Roles.AddUserToRole (error Message: Cannot Resolve Collation Conflict For Equal To Operation)
Feb 5, 2006Hi, I have developed a website in asp.net 2. I have tester it and it is working fine on my computer but when I have uploaded it to my server I'm getting an error message when the user signup. The error occurs when I'm setting the user role to 'members'.
Error line > Roles.AddUserToRole(user.UserName, "members")
The strage thig is that it is working on my computer but not on the server. My home computer and the server are running the same software versions and the website database is the same as well.
To double check that my code is not generating the error I have lonched 'SQL Query Analizer' and executed the folowing code on my database:
NOTE: In my database I have create the user “teeluk12� and a role “members�

Once again the code is working on my home computer but not on the server. On the server I'm getting the following error:

Cannot resolve collation conflict for equal to operation.
Does anybody know what could cause the error?
Could it be some permissions that I didn't set on my server?

I have SQL 2005 Developer on XP SP2 , I have disabled my windows firewall. I can ping to my server (croaktoad.simpli.biz) and i get no error message. My remote connection using both TCP/IP and named pipes are checkeed. My SQL Server Browser is running as well.
However when I try to connect using Managment Studio or running SQLCMD /Scroaktoad. simpli.biz /E I get the following error message
