Error Message With Recordset.Update
Feb 9, 2007
Hi,
I am converting a VB6 application to C# using ADO. I have the following code:
private ADODB.Connection cn = new ADODB.Connection();
private ADODB.Recordset rs = new ADODB.Recordset();
private connectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data source= " + stdDir;
strClientSQL = "SELECT * FROM Client ORDER BY casename, renldate, product, fundingcode";
cn.CursorLocation = ADODB.CursorLocationEnum.adUseClient;
cn.Open(Utilities.connectionString,null,null,0);
rs.CursorLocation = ADODB.CursorLocationEnum.adUseServer;
rs.Open(strClientSQL,cn, ADODB.CursorTypeEnum.adOpenStatic, ADODB.LockTypeEnum.adLockOptimistic,-1);
rs.Fields["CaseName"].Value = this.txtCaseName.Text;
rs.Fields["CaseNo"].Value = this.txtCaseNumber.Text;
rs.Update();
When I try to compile and run it I get the following error message:
"No overload for method 'Update' takes '0' arguments"
I am not sure if I need to enter information in the update command or do something else. This seems pretty straight forward but I can't figure out how to do it. Can someone please help me?
Thanks,
Mark

Question to those who may have had this same error- it seems that I am not able to delete some of the reports that I have created. This just started happening recently and according to our system admin nothing has changed as far as permissions are concernced. We installed SP2 the other day and I was wondering if this could have anything to do with the error message below
by the way I am a member of the sysadmin group
thanks in advance

I want to add a record and then get the automatically generated identifier(ReqChildID in this case). Is there a better way? Why won't this one work.
This is what I have:
rsRec.AddNew
rsRec("RequisitionID") = intReqNum
rsRec("CreatedBy") = cint(session("empno"))
rsRec("DateCreated") = Now
rsRec.Update
intItemId = rsRec("ReqChildID")
rsRec.Close
Forgive me if this has already been posted, but I couldn't find it.
[edit to add:]
rsRec is an ADODB.Recordset in case that wasn't clear.

We recently migrated from SQL Server 7 to SQL Server 2005. Now there's a curious thing with some legacy applications. I have pasted some code below. Don't judge me, because like I said, it's legacy.
You can see, that I have two connection strings. One is commented and accessing via SQL Native Client. The other one is doing this through the old SQL Server driver. Funnily enough, when I use the new Native Client driver, the exception "Run-time error '-2147467259 (80004005)' [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid attribute value" is thrown in the rsPorder2.Update line. With the old driver, this works just alright.
Is this a bug? Is there a way, to make the code run, because we don't want to search the whole application for other occurances, if not necessary.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
DD

Hi to all....
I'm new on this forum, but, I'm a experienced programmer.
I wanna solve this problem (if you can helpme....), recently, I'm trying to migrate an old SQL 7 to the new SQL 2005 server enterprise edition, I have no problem to import the data, users, stored procedures, etc. and all work fine, I can connect troght ODBC from the others computers, including some older pentium 1 mmx 200 mhz. with WIN98 (yes!).
My problem is an legacy VB6 application that work (well fine) with SQL7 server, but, when i change the odbc of the desktops systems to the new 2005 SQL server and run this legacy application hi recibe this error:

I have look on the source code of the legacy application, and someone of the segment's that causes error is:

I have not asked this question before as it did not make sense -> there was no official SQLCE3.0 support on desktop. Now, since SQL CE is promiced to be supported on desktop as SQL/E I decided to ask.

hopefully, someone has already solved this problem
I have been assigned an application that maps data from access databases into a view in Sql Server 2005. A vb6 application does a select on the view. The recordset is then modified by the application, and eventually, the original tables will be updated with the new data. Some of the fields in the view are the result of calculations ( i.e. adding multiple varchar fields together to produce one complex varchar result ). Any of the fields that are calculated in the manner previously described have the adFldUnknownUpdatable bit set in the attributes of the recordset, and consequently, you get a -2147217887 error ( multiple-step operation .... ) when you try to change the value of the field in the recordset. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

I am trying to run the following asp function:
Private Function GetAbs(dThisDate, lPartID)
sql_abs = "SELECT AbsCode FROM Absence WHERE AbsDate = '" & dThisDate & "' AND PartID = " & lPartID
Set rs_abs = conn.Execute(sql_abs)
GetAbs = rs_abs(0).Value
Set rs_abs = Nothing
End Function
It works fine if it finds a record but returns an error if it doesn't. How can I avoid this error?
Thanks!

I know, I know this is really an ASP question but I'm thinking that you db gurus write some frontend code too. I have an ASP script (see snippet) that connects to my SQL Server 7 db (see connect string below).
16 sqlUser = "SELECT instructorId, schoolId, salutation, firstName, lastName, phone, email " & _
17 "FROM tblInstructors " & _
18 "WHERE (((userName)='"&Request.Form("userName")&"') AND ((password)='"&Request.Form("password")&"'))"
19
20 Set rsUser = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.RecordSet")
21 rsUser.Open sqlUser, oConn
This code runs fine as long as I key in a valid username and password. If I key in a bad username and password combo the db returns the following to my browser:
ADODB.Recordset error '800a0bb9'
Arguments are of the wrong type, are out of acceptable range, or are in conflict with one another.
/loginProc.asp, line 21
I tested by writing the finished sql to my browser and pasting it into the Enterprise manager and it runs as expected, I get a record with valid credentials and no record otherwise (but no error).
I'm using SQL Server v7, can anyone shed any light on this? thanks
connect string:
"Provider=sqloledb;" & _
"Data Source=(local);" & _
"Initial Catalog=GradeTrax;" & _
"User ID=sa;" & _

I have shifted my vb/access database to vb/mysql and i have one form in my project in which i want to display all the records in the database in the list box . I'm trying to use an XML Task to do a simple XSLT operation, but it fails with this error message:
[XML Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "There are multiple root elements. Line 5, position 2.".
The source XML file validates fine and I've successfully used it as the XML Source in a data flow task to load some SQL Server tables. It has very few line breaks, so the first 5 lines are pretty long: almost 4000 characters, including 34 start-tags, 19 end-tags, and 2 empty element tags. Here's the very beginning of it:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<ESDU releaselevel="2006-02" createdate="26 May 2006"><package id="1" title="_standard" shorttitle="_standard" filename="pk_stan" supplementdate="01/05/2005" supplementlevel="1">
<![CDATA[This package contains the standard ESDU Series.]]>
There is only 1 ESDU root element and only 1 package element.
Of course, the XSLT stylesheet is also an XML document in its own right. I specify it directly in the XML Task:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"/>
<xsl:template name="identity" match="@*|node()">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="kw">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*"/>
<xsl:attribute name="ihs_cats_seq" select="position()"/>
<xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
Its 5th line is the first xsl:template element.
What is going on here? I do not see multiple root elements in either the XML document or the XSLT stylesheet.
Thanks!

I am getting an error (number -2147217887, error message "ODBC--call failed.") when I try to execute an rst.Update. I have an MS Access 2013 application using an ODBC connection to SQL Server 2008 r2. I am using a query to update a table. It is a simple Select query with no joins. I have checked to make sure the table can be updated.
I was not sure if there were any special permissions that I need to set to allow a linked table to be updated in MS Access this way?

An update with anyting but one row affected is in this case to be considered an error/problem. As ut use the primary key in the where clause the and I want to store away the update values in anoter table
I want to act on the "(0 row(s) affected)" message. Is there a way to do that or do I have to query the database before I do the update?

To anyone that can help me
we have a application written in straight ASP, we recently upgraded our SQL database connecting to the application from SQL 2000 to 2005 here is the issue
currently SQL 2005 is located in our test and UAT environments, SQL 2005 is not clustered in either location. Now let me make it clear THIS PROBLEM IS NOT HAPPENING IN OUR TEST ENVIRONMENT, I REPEAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT HAPPENING IN OUR TEST ENVIROMENT, THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY HAPPENING IN OUR UAT ENVIROMENT
Each enviroment is outfitted with the following SQL 2005 environment, Enterprise Edition SP1 with Cumlative hotfix package 2153 just the SISS fix ONLY
now the problem is this, we have a vb program located directly on the server that has SQL 2005 on it that VB program inserts a timestamp into a table inside the database, now how this happens is the program connects to the database and opens a recordset with a forwardonly cursor and inserts the timestamp
NOW THE EXACT PROBLEM IS THAT THE VB PROGRAM CANNOT OPEN MULTIPLE RECORDSETS, THE ERROR RECEIVED IS LABLED LIKE THIS
ODBC DRIVER ERROR 8000405 SHARED MEMORY SQL DOESNT EXIST OR ACCESSED DENIED,
NOW here is the interesting part, AGAIN THIS IS NOT HAPPENING IN OUR TEST ENVIRONMENT, THE VB PROGRAM AGAIN IS ON THE TEST SQL SERVER AND HAS A FORWARD ONLY CURSOR AND INSERTS JUST FINE
NOW IF I MOVE THE VB PROGRAM OUT OF OUR UAT ENVIRONMENT ONTO ANOTHER SERVER IT INSERTS THE RECORD ONTO SQL SERVER JUST FINE, IT OPENS THE RECORDSET AND OPERATES NORMALLY, BOTH SERVERS HAVE EXACT SAME PERMISSIONS
Can anyone help me understand whats happening here
One note, when we changed the cursortype from forward-only to keyset it worked fine but that doesnt explain things
why does it work in test so clearly what we did with changing the cursortype isnt the answer
Thanks please consider this a urgent request

My apologies...I wasn't for sure where to post an error like this...
Over the last 2 months I have gotten this SQL Server error (twice). All existing processes will continue to work, however no new processes can be created and users cannot connect to the server. This is the exact text of the message in the SQL Server error log.
Operating system error 10038: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket...
Error: 17059, Severity: 18, State: 0
Error accepting connection request via Net-Library 'SSNETLIB'. Execution continuing.
Error: 17882, Severity: 18, State:
While we can typically just stop SQL Server Service and restart the services...I have found it is best to restart the machine during non-production times to take care of any 'residual' effects of this error.
The SQL Server 2000 SP4 box with Windows 2003 Standard SP1 is well maintained by our I.T. team and it typically will run 4 or 5 months without a reboot.
Thank you...

Hi, I have developed a website in asp.net 2. I have tester it and it is working fine on my computer but when I have uploaded it to my server I'm getting an error message when the user signup. The error occurs when I'm setting the user role to 'members'.
Error line > Roles.AddUserToRole(user.UserName, "members")
The strage thig is that it is working on my computer but not on the server. My home computer and the server are running the same software versions and the website database is the same as well.
To double check that my code is not generating the error I have lonched 'SQL Query Analizer' and executed the folowing code on my database:
NOTE: In my database I have create the user “teeluk12 and a role “members
aspnet_UsersInRoles_AddUsersToRoles "/", "teeluk12", "members", "5/02/2006 4:44:33 pm"
Once again the code is working on my home computer but not on the server. On the server I'm getting the following error:
Server: Msg 446, Level 16, State 9, Procedure aspnet_UsersInRoles_AddUsersToRoles, Line 76
Cannot resolve collation conflict for equal to operation.
Does anybody know what could cause the error?
Could it be some permissions that I didn't set on my server?
Thanks for my help and suggestions...

Gonzal

Hi,
I have an c# windows service, which is running on the same machine where my mssql server is installed. This service must be informed for each insert/update/delete event on one specific table.
My idea was to create an CLR Trigger for this table which can communicate with this service via .NET remoting. But the problem is, that the system.runtime.remoting assembly is not integrated within the mssql clr enviroment => i can't use remoting.
Are there any other idea's how can i solve this?

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file D:lahwebsitesGiants North Walesapp_datadatabase.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
This error is very frustrating and I really can't find a way around it. I have done the following: -

Hi,I am trying to write some C# ASP.NET 2.0 code. I have created a web form to send data to my sql server 2005 database. When I compile the application and insert data then click on the submit button I get this error
"A first chance exception of type
'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException' occurred in System.Data.dll" I have been trying to solve this for a few days now with no luck, so any help would be appreciated. I'll post below the source code of the web form (addOrder.aspx). It might be worth mentioning that I have created another web form in the same project called addCustomer.aspx. Like addOrder.aspx it is a web form, however it successfully inserts data in the database. 1 <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Default.master" Title="Add Order Page" %>
2 <%@ import namespace="System.Data.SqlClient" %>
3 <%@ Import Namespace="System.Data" %>

Hello-
I have the following sql statement which produced an error when I add the order by clause
SQL = "SELECT DISTINCT nc_department.department, Count(nonconformance.department_id) as 'events', ISNULL(SUM(nonconformance.nc_wafer_qty),0) as wafers FROM nc_department LEFT OUTER JOIN nonconformance ON nc_department.department_id = nonconformance.department_id WHERE nc_department.active = '1' GROUP BY nc_department.department ORDER by nc_department.order_id"
This is the error I get:
ORDER BY items must appear in the select list if SELECT DISTINCT is specified.
Any help appreciated
