Can I safely use top n select/delete in a while loop? For example:
declare @FieldVal int
while (select count(*) from @MyTempTable) > 0
begin
select top 1 @FieldVal = FieldVal from @MyTempTable
-- process @FieldVal then delete the row
delete top 1 from @MyTempTable
end
I like the simplicity of the above approach as long as it's reliable and there aren't any gotchas that I may not be aware of.

Far below (in section "original 3 steps"), you see the following:1. a temp table is created2. some data is inserted into this table3. some of the inserted data is removed based on a join with the sametable that the original select was made fromIn my opinion, there is no way that the join could produce more rowsthan were originally retrieved from viewD. Hence, we could get rid ofthe DELETE step by simply changing the query to be:INSERT INTO #details ( rec_id, orig_corr, bene_corr )SELECT rec_id, 0, 0FROM viewDWHERE SOURCE_SYS NOT IN ( 'G', 'K' )AND MONTH( VALUE_DATE_A8 ) = MONTH( @date )AND YEAR( VALUE_DATE_A8 ) = YEAR( @date )AND INMESS NOT LIKE '2__' ---- the added line===== original 3 steps (mentioned above) =====CREATE TABLE #details (rec_id UNIQUEIDENTIFIER PRIMARY KEY NOT NULL,orig VARCHAR(35) NULL,bene VARCHAR(35) NULL,orig_corr TINYINT NULL,bene_corr TINYINT NULL)INSERT INTO #details ( rec_id, orig_corr, bene_corr )SELECT rec_id, 0, 0FROM viewDWHERE SOURCE_SYS NOT IN ( 'G', 'K' )AND MONTH( VALUE_DATE_A8 ) = MONTH( @date )AND YEAR( VALUE_DATE_A8 ) = YEAR( @date )DELETE dFROM #details dJOIN viewD v ON ( d.rec_id = v.rec_id )WHERE INMESS LIKE '2__'

I have a execute sql task which insert data into a table, but before that I need to make sure no data is available for particular date. we have a table where we are defining date for which date we want to data, and we are fetching that particular date using ssis variable 'Date'. today I was trying to load data dor '2015-05-10'. But it gave me error like '[Execute SQL Task] Error: "Value does not fall within the expected range.'. Below are the my execute sql task query:
delete from STG_Shipped_Invoiced
where Transaction_Date=?
INSERT INTO STG_Shipped_Invoiced (div_Code, inv_inv_id, tot_Net_Amt,
trans_date, trans_type, Created_date, Transaction_Date)
select inv.DIV_CODE as Div_Code, inv.INV_ID as inv_inv_id, inv.TOT_NET_AMT as Tot_Net_Amt,
[Code] ....
Here I have defined a variable 'Date', where we are passing the date. Am i doing anything wrong with the delete query?

Hiya,
We've got a strange problem.
We are running on SQL 2000 SP4.
Our structure uses database pairs, we have a Current and a History database so old records that don't change and aren't needed very often are only loaded into memory when needed.
The following query (the names have been changed) deletes the quote from the current database when the order raised from the quote has been moved into the history.
Code Snippet
DELETE FROM t_CurrentUnpaid
FROM db_Mule_History.dbo.t_History INNER JOIN
t_Quote ON
db_Mule_History.dbo.t_History.uid = t_Quote.uid INNER JOIN
t_CurrentUnpaid ON
t_Quote.uid_Parent = t_CurrentUnpaid.uid
where t_CurrentUnpaid.uid_cont != -2
This query runs fine on 4 identical database pairs, on the 5th pair it fails. All these pairs are on the same server, with the same permissions and the exact same structure. Only the data would differ
The error returned is:
Internal server error 8624
level 16 state 1 line 1
We have looked at MS articles, but all that I can find are about bugs fixed in SP1, 2, 3 and 4.
Nothing post SP4 that we are running.
Many thans in advance.

I have some simple files but they are failing because the delete history task is failing as it is looking for files in a non existent directory.
It is looking for files in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.INSTANCEMSSQLLog whereas it should be looking in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLLog
how I can get this corrected so I can get the Maintenance Plans to run correctly.

I have a script that delete records daily and shrinks the log file. I tested it with the SQL Analyzer and I should get the same results? I put this in a job that runs at night and when checking today when I got in the jobs ran successfully but the datafile continued to grow along with the transaction log. Here is the script:
Use wslogdb62
go
delete * FROM dbo.INCOMING_temp
WHERE DATE_TIME <=dateadd(day, -180, getdate())
DBCC SHRINKFILE(wslogdb62_log, 1)
as you know I get a error from the analyzer.

Hello, I am moving from Access to SQL and I am trying to create DELETE and a SELECT procedures. I was following the Asp.Net 2.0 Membership, Roles, etc procedures but I am not getting there. Could someone, please, post just the 3 procedures for this example? It would be a start for me to work on ... I have related two tables: <Content> and <ContentLocalized> <Content> |----- [ContentId] Type=UniqueIdentifier PK | [ContentName] Type=NVarChar(100) | | <ContentLocalized> | [ContentLocalizedId] Type=UniqueIdentifier PK | -------> [ContentId] Type=UniqueIdentifier FK | [ContentCulture] Type=NVarChar(5) | [ContentHtml] Type=NVarChar(MAX) Basically I want to create 3 stored procedures: 1. SELECT [ContentHtml] Given [ContentName] and [ContentCulture] 2. DELETE a content in <Content> and all its dependencies in <ContentLocalized> given [ContentName] 3. DELETE a content record in <ContentLocalized> given [ContentName] and [ContentCulture] I allready have an Access Query for (1) but I don't think I should try to use it in SQL: SELECT ContentLocalized.ContentHtml FROM Content INNER JOIN ContentLocalized ON Content.ContentId=ContentLocalized.ContentId WHERE (((ContentLocalized.ContentCulture)=[@ContentCulture]) AND ((Content.ContentName)=[@ContentName])); Thank You Very Much, Miguel

I've constructed the SELECT statement to show the rows I want - and it shows 189 rows. Now I want to delete these rows. Here is the SELECT statement:
SELECT tblinqty.* FROM tblinqty LEFT JOIN tblmporder ON tblinqty.linkidsub = tblmporder.orderno WHERE tblmporder.orderno IS NULL and tblinqty.transtype = '0' and tblinqty.linkid = 'MP'
If I change the statement to "select * from tblinqty where exists ()", putting the above command inside the (), it returns over 12,000 rows! My intention is to change the SELECT into a DELETE by replacing the "select *" with a "DELETE" - but if I do that it will delete the wrong rows. How is the easiest way to turn the above successful SELECT statement, which yields 189 rows, into a DELETE statement which also deletes the same 189 rows?
I've tried changing the statement to a WHERE, thinking it would be easier to change to a DELETE, but the following yields 0 rows:
SELECT tblinqty.* FROM tblinqty WHERE tblinqty.linkidsub = tblmporder.orderno AND tblmporder.orderno IS NULL and tblinqty.transtype = '0' and tblinqty.linkid = 'MP'

I've got four pages with in the first page a insert, in the second a select, in the thirth a update and in the fourth a delete statement. First the values of a textbox will be inserted in the database, then the values will be shown in labels and than it is possible to edit or delete the values inserted. Every inserted item belonging to each other has one ID. The follwing values has a second ID etc.
How can I make that possible?? I think that I should pass the ID's between the pages so I'm sure that I edit or delete the values that I want. So insert value 1 in page 1, show with select value 1 in page 2, edit or delete value 1 in page 3 and 4.
Maybe I didn't explain it good enough for you, please tell me then!!
Thanks!!

I want to pull the table data from my ODBC datasource, delete any existing data in my SQL tables and then insert the data from my ODBC datasource into SQL. I am trying to create an SSIS package to do this but am not sure where to start. Any help or examples would be appreciated.

I would like to know if it is possible to build one SP to perform all the functions (Add, Update, delete and Select) and then use this in my code instead of making one SP per action. I know this is possible but the update part throws me a little. I used an online example to explain where I fall short on the subject.
USE [SomeTable]
GO
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[MasterInsertUpdateDelete]
[Code] ....
So using this as the Stored Procedure, how would I update a records Salary alone by the ID without having to use all the information with just the salary being the new value?

Greetings. I have been trying to develop an SSIS package that updates external data (Visual FoxPro tables) from SQL Server 2005. I have tried this various ways: using various Data Flow task components that flow to an OLEB Destination; using an Execute T-SQL Task; and even trying Management Studio interactively with the OpenDataSource('vfpoledb', etc.) statement. For each of these techniques, I have no problem performing a SELECT from the VFP data. Also, I have no problems performing an INSERT of new records using any of these techniques. However, both UPDATE and DELETE of existing records fail.
Is it possible the the OLE DB driver doesn't support UPDATE and DELETE operations? It appears that I'm not allowed to change or delete existing records, only add new ones. Or, are there other techniques I can be trying?
I am aware that updating FoxPro data can be performed by pulling the data from SQL Server into FoxPro. For our purposes, it would be more convenient if the processes could be initiated and managed from the SQL Server side of things instead.
Thanks much,
Randy Witt

Hi All,
As known its recommended to use stored procedures when executing on database for perfermance issue. I am thinking to create 4 stored procedures on my database (spSelectQuery, spInsertQuery, spUpdateQuery, spDeleteQuery)
that accept any query and execute it and return the result, rather than having a number of stored procedures for all tables? create PROCEDURE spSelectQuery
(
@select_query nvarchar(500)
)
as
begin
exec sp_executesql @select_query, N'@col_val varchar(50) out', @col_val out
end
Is this a good approach design, or its bad???
Thanks all

I have an issue where I am getting an error on an unique index.
I know why I am getting the error but not sure how to get around it.
The query does a check on whether a unique value exists in the Insert/Select. If I run it one record at a time (SELECT TOP 1...) it works fine and just won't update it if the record exists.
But if I do it in a batch, I get the error. I assume this is because it does the checking on the file before records are written out and then writes out the records one at a time from a temporary table.
It thinks all the records are unique because it compares the records one at a time to the original table (where there would be no duplicates). But it doesn't check the records against each other. Then when it actually writes out the record, the duplicate is there.
How do I do a batch where the Insert/Select would write out the records without the duplicates as it does when I do it one record at a time.
CREATE TABLE #TestTable

Name varchar(50),
Email varchar (40)

I have a piece of code that uses the db-library with sql server 2000/2005 and runs the following delete statement:
DELETE FROM TABLE1 WHERE COL1 IN( 'Some Val1' ) AND COL2 IN( 'Some Val2' ) AND Col3 IN( integer1 ) AND Col4 IN( integer2 ) AND Col5 IN( 'Some Val3' )
on TABLE1, uploads data into TABLE1 through bulk loading, calls a stored procedure that uses the data, and then deletes the data through the SAME delete statement with EXACTLY the same parameter values. The first delete statement is always successful, but the second statement intermittently gives the following error:
0,0,MS SQL Server Message :
SQL Server message 512, state 1, severity 16:
Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.
SQL Server message 3621, state 0, severity 0:
The statement has been terminated.
Note: I was initially using the equality operator instead of the IN operator in the query but that gave the same results.
Can somebody tell me whats going wrong here? I can easily ignore this error because my work is done after the stored proc but I fear amassing a lot of useless data in the table over time. Also http://support.microsoft.com/kb/195491 talks about a case where the delete statement is actually successful but still causes an error when using ADO.

Hi,
Thanks for looking at this post. I currently have a trigger that fires when a row is inserted or deleted on a table. The idea behind the trigger is that when a row is inserted (representing a sub-category for images), the categories parent needs to have some work done on it. I currently have the trigger working just fine with single inserts and single deletes:
sql Code:
Original
- sql Code
CREATE TRIGGER smvcModImageManagerCategory_insert_delete_pdfManger_sync
ON smvcModImageManagerCategory
FOR INSERT, DELETE
AS
DECLARE @pdfId INTEGER;
DECLARE @parentPdfId INTEGER;
DECLARE @grandparentPdfId INTEGER;
DECLARE @parentId INTEGER;
DECLARE @grandparentId INTEGER;
DECLARE @tableName VARCHAR( 255 );
-- If I am being inserted or deleted, and I am not a top level
-- category, then my parent's pdf record needs to be set so that
-- the pdf file is updated
IF (SELECT id FROM Inserted) IS NOT NULL
BEGIN
SELECT @pdfId = (SELECT pdfManagerId FROM Inserted),
@parentId = (SELECT parentCategory FROM Inserted),
@grandparentId = (SELECT parentCategory FROM smvcModImageManagerCategory
WHERE id = @parentId);
END
ELSE
BEGIN
SELECT @pdfId = (SELECT pdfManagerId FROM Deleted),
@parentId = (SELECT parentCategory FROM Deleted),
@grandparentId = (SELECT parentCategory FROM smvcModImageManagerCategory
WHERE id = @parentId)
END
-- If I am not a top level category, set my parent's pdf to be
-- updated
IF @parentId <> -1
BEGIN
SELECT @parentPdfId = (SELECT pdfManagerId
FROM smvcModImageManagerCategory
WHERE id = @parentId);
UPDATE smvcModPdfManager SET data_last_updated = GETDATE()
WHERE id = @parentPdfId;
END
GO
CREATE TRIGGER smvcModImageManagerCategory_insert_delete_pdfManger_syncON smvcModImageManagerCategoryFOR INSERT, DELETEAS DECLARE @pdfId INTEGER; DECLARE @parentPdfId INTEGER; DECLARE @grandparentPdfId INTEGER; DECLARE @parentId INTEGER; DECLARE @grandparentId INTEGER; DECLARE @tableName VARCHAR( 255 ); -- If I am being inserted or deleted, and I am not a top level -- category, then my parent's pdf record needs to be set so that -- the pdf file is updated IF (SELECT id FROM Inserted) IS NOT NULL BEGIN SELECT @pdfId = (SELECT pdfManagerId FROM Inserted), @parentId = (SELECT parentCategory FROM Inserted), @grandparentId = (SELECT parentCategory FROM smvcModImageManagerCategory WHERE id = @parentId); END ELSE BEGIN SELECT @pdfId = (SELECT pdfManagerId FROM Deleted), @parentId = (SELECT parentCategory FROM Deleted), @grandparentId = (SELECT parentCategory FROM smvcModImageManagerCategory WHERE id = @parentId) END -- If I am not a top level category, set my parent's pdf to be -- updated IF @parentId <> -1 BEGIN SELECT @parentPdfId = (SELECT pdfManagerId FROM smvcModImageManagerCategory WHERE id = @parentId); UPDATE smvcModPdfManager SET data_last_updated = GETDATE() WHERE id = @parentPdfId; ENDGO
However, when I execute a statement like:
sql Code:
Original
- sql Code
DELETE FROM smvcModImageManagerCategory WHERE (smvcModImageManagerCategory.id IN ('86','87','88','90','91'))
DELETE FROM smvcModImageManagerCategory WHERE (smvcModImageManagerCategory.id IN ('86','87','88','90','91'))
I get an error because the virtual 'Deleted' table has more than one record in it. So, what I really need is advice on how to turn the above trigger into something that will be able to handle multiple deletes.
Thank you.

Hello
I need to be able to regularly, update or delete data from my parent table and subsequent child tables from A to Z, each table contains data. However, I have having problems.
I have already created the tables with primary keys on each table and foreign keys linking each table to the next.
I tried to delete a row from the parent table and was given this error:
DELETE FROM [dbo].[DomNam]WHERE [DomNam]=N' football '
Error: Query(1/1) DELETE statement conflicted with COLUMN REFERENCE constraint 'FK_DomNam'. The conflict occurred in database 'DomDB', table 'Dom_CatA', column 'DomNam'.
I tried to insert an alter table query:
ALTER TABLE dbo.DomNamADD CONSTRAINT FK_Dom_ID
REFERENCES dbo.Dom_CatA (Dom_ID)
ON DELETE CASCADE ON UPDATE CASCADE
But on Execute I saw this error:
Error] Incorrect syntax for definition of the 'TABLE' constraint
What is wrong with the above syntax?
Or would it be better if I used a trigger instead because I already have foreign keys set within the tables?If so please give an example of the syntax for the trigger I would need to update and cascade data from all tables.
I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks.

Hi,
We have a query: delete from myTable *******
and we get the error:
Msg 8624, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Internal SQL Server error.
When we run the same condition but with select instead of delete, every thing works fine, we only have pb with delete.
How can we detect what the problem is. Because with Internal error Msg 8624 does not tell us any thing, what re we supposed to make the query works especially that it runs correctly in select mode.
Thanks a lot.
