Error Between String Data Types

Dec 22, 2005

I reinstalled SQL Server, setup new connetions in my existing project and then pointed the existing controls in my SSIS packege to my new OLE DB Connection manager.

When I run my package, now I get:

One Or More Columns Do Not Have Supported Data Types, Or Their Data Types Do Not Match.

Oct 20, 2007

Hi,

I´m exporting an ms-excel file, then I use a lookup transformation to get a field from a SQL Server 2005 table. The Lookup transformation editor, after selecting the table, shows a warning that says:

at least one mapping between a column from available input columns ans a column from available lookup columns must be defined on the columns page.

So I try to make a relationship in the Lookup transformation editor's column tab where I find the Available input columns and the available lookup columns but I get the following error:

The following columns cannot be mapped:
[Department, DEP_CLEGALCODE]
One or more columns do not have supported data types, or their data types do not match.

The field in SLQ Server is varchar(10) and the input field is a derived column transformation; I have tried different Data Types but I always have the same error.

The DataFlow is: ExcelSource --> Derived Column --> Lookup --> Flat file destination

thanks.

Erroneous Error Aggrigating Different Data Types

Jul 10, 2006

Im getting an error message stating that I'm trying to aggrigate values of different data types, but I don't believe I am. In a table footer, I have a sum(fields!revenue). When I preview the report, the field says Errror, and the output window has a message that the field formula is trying to aggrigate different data types. The query column is a money type. The Report Service is interpreting zero value rows as integers and other rows as money or maybe decimal. If there are no zero value rows, the formula works. I've tried all kinds of conversion gimmicks to make the Report Service see the items as money, without any luck.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, or know a work around?

Thank you,
Charles

SSIS: Unicode And Non-unicode String Data Types

May 14, 2008

Hi guys and gals,

I've had some great headaches with SSIS this morning, which I have managed to get a workarounds for, but I'm not happy with them so I've come to ask for advice.

Basically, I am exporting data from an SQL Server database into an Excel spreadsheet and hitting issues with unicode and non-unicode data types.

For example, I have a column that is char(6) and have added a data conversion step to the data flow, which converts it to type DT_WSTR and then everything works!

However, this seems like a completely un-neccessary step as I should be able to do the conversion in T-SQL - but no matter what I try I keep getting the same problem.

SELECT Cast(employee_number As nvarchar(255)) As [employee_number]
FROM employee
WHERE forename = 'george'

ErrorValidation error. details: 1 [1123]: Column "employee_number" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.

I know I have a solution (read: workaround) but I really don't want to do this everytime!

Any suggestions for what else to try?

Cannot Convert Between Unicode And Non-unicode String Data Types.

Apr 6, 2006

I have an Excel Source component hooked to an OLE DB Destination component in my SSIS 2005 Data Flow Task.  After I mapped the excel columns to the OLE DB table columns i get these errors below.  I noticed that for the first error, the Excel Field format (when you mouse over the column name in the mappings section in OLE DB component) is of type [DTWSTR] and the corresponding SQL field from my SQL table that it's mapping to is of type [DT_STR] when mousing over that field in the mappings in the properties of my OLE DB component.  All table fields in SQL Server for the table I'm inserting into are of type varchar.

Integration Services :: Error - The Data Types Are Incompatible For Conditional Operator

May 22, 2015

Im reading in a CSV wiht double quote text delimiters. Data came from mySQL.

One column in mySql is text(65535) which is equivalent to varchar(max) as far as i understand.

This particular column can be blank, not null, just blank. If its blank i want to put in a value so i added a Derived column shape and added the following formula:

LEN(my_Column) < 1 ?  "" :  (DT_TEXT)my_Column

I get the below error from this expression:

The data types "DT_WSTR" and "DT_TEXT" are incompatible for the conditional operator. The operand types cannot be implicitly cast into compatible types for the conditional operation. To perform this operation, one or both operands need to be explicitly cast with a cast operator.

I have tried this without casting but still get an error. As I have configured the column in the flatfile connector as DT_TEXT, im not sure where its getting DT_STR from.

String Or Binary Data Would Be Truncated. I Get This Error When Entering Data Using Sql Server Management Studio Express.

String or binary data would be truncated. I get this error when entering data using sql server management studio express.

I am not running a sql to insert or update the table. This is through the EDI.

The data type is varchar(100). I enter one character and it errors on me. So this isn't a string being too long problem.

Any ideas?

XML Source: String Types Lose Length Attributes In XML Schema?

Jan 25, 2007

I'm having a problem with the XML Source data flow component not transferring the length attributes from an XML Schema to the column attributes of the output table.

An example schema that I have is:

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?><data xmlns:xsd='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema' xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance'><xsd:schema> <xsd:simpleType name='NameType'> <xsd:restriction base='xsd:string'> <xsd:minLength value='0'/> <xsd:maxLength value='50'/> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> <xsd:element name='Name' type='NameType' nillable='true'/> <xsd:simpleType name='FamilyType'> <xsd:restriction base='xsd:string'> <xsd:minLength value='0'/> <xsd:maxLength value='50'/> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> <xsd:element name='Family' type='FamilyType' nillable='true'/> <xsd:element name='row'> <xsd:complexType> <xsd:sequence> <xsd:element ref='Name'/> <xsd:element ref='Family'/> </xsd:sequence> </xsd:complexType> </xsd:element> <xsd:element name='data'> <xsd:complexType> <xsd:sequence> <xsd:element ref='row' maxOccurs='unbounded'/> </xsd:sequence> </xsd:complexType> </xsd:element></xsd:schema> <!-- data follows --> <row><Name>Fred</Name><Family>Jones</Family></row></data>
When I reference file in the XML Source data control, it correctly infers that there are two columns, but the length of the strings in the columns are set as 255.

This behaviour appears to be at odds with the SSIS documentation (SQL Server Integration Services/Integration Services Object and Concepts/Data Flow Elements/Integration Services Sources/XML Source), which states (highlighting mine):

When the data is extracted from the XML data file, it is converted to an Integration Services data type. The XSD or inline schema may specify the data type for elements, but if it does not, the XML Source Editor dialog box assigns the Unicode string data type (DT_WSTR) to the column in the output that contains the element, and sets the column length to 255 characters. If the schema specifies the maximum length of an element, the length of output column is set to this value. If the maximum length is greater than the length supported by the Integration Services data type to which the element is converted, then the data is truncated to the maximum length of the data type. For example, if a string has a length of 5000, it is truncated to 4000 characters because the maximum length of the DT_WSTR data type is 4000 characters; likewise, byte data is truncated to 8000 characters, the maximum length of the DT_BYTES data type. If the schema specifies no maximum length, the default length of columns with either data type is set to 255. Data truncation in the XML source is handled the same way as truncation in other data flow components. For more information, see Handling Errors in Data.

Has anyone had any luck in getting string lengths automatically extracted from an XML document? If so, where I am going wrong?

Regards,

Michael

Error Of Max Length Of String Using Sql DTC To Import DATA

Mar 8, 2004

Hi,

I am trying to use DTC to import about 500 records from an Excelsheet to an SQL database.

Some fields contain strings with a length of about 1700 characters.

When i'm trying to execute the DTC generated code it is giving an error and saying that the maximum string length of 255 has been reached. Althoug the column in the database is defined as nchar(1750).

Does anybody know an answer to this problem ?

Thanks in advance,

String Or Binary Data Would Be Truncated Error Message

Aug 9, 2006

I am getting the message ("string or binary data would be truncated") when trying to update a field in a table in my database, but am unclear as to why. I understand that the error usually occurs when the length of a string exceeds the limit allowed for a field in the database, but in this situation, that constraint should not apply. The length of the field for which I am trying to make the update is a varchar field of length 100. The value for which I am attempting to update is an e-mail address of length 42 of the format xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@yahoo.com. The initial insertion of the value (via my website) succeeded in inserting the first 40 characters of the address, but cut off the "om" at the end. It doesn't seem to matter how large I make the field in the database as it always gives me this error when I try to make the update. I have tried to change the value in both Query Analyzer and Enterprise Manager, but I invariably receive the same error.Any ideas?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Agent Job Error - String Or Binary Data Would Be Truncated

Sep 20, 2013

I'm running into the following message, "String or binary data would be truncated. [SQLSTATE 22001] (Error 8152)" when running a sql agent job. I'm attempting to execute a stored procedure through the job. Keep in mind that when I run the stored procedure in a normal query window, it works fine and only fails when running it as a scheduled job. My guess is that it has to do with how SQL Jobs execute procedures (especially long procedures). If I use Set Ansi_Warnings OFF, the job will work fine, however, I don't know what other issues this may cause.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Error Handling - String Or Binary Data Would Be Truncated

May 16, 2014

We have a wrapper procedure that i am looking at replacing shortly. Basic Layout is something like like

Create proc SP_Wrapper
as
SP_LogProc 'proc1','Start'
Exec proc1
SP_LogProc 'proc1','End'
SP_LogProc 'proc2','Start'
Exec proc2
SP_LogProc 'proc2','End'

SP_LogProc 'proc3','Start'
Exec proc3
SP_LogProc 'proc3','End'
....

You get the idea. So logproc just logs that the procedure has started or stopped to a table so we can monitor it easily.

The procedure is then run by an agent job every morning. This morning we had a little bit of an odd one. In the example above we effectively got to 'proc3' being started (as it was logged). However there was then an error of String or binary data would be truncated (severity 16 i believe). However when proc3 was then manually run it worked (the data was unchanged). Then going back proc2 works fine, and its actually proc1 that has the error.

I have looked through the procs in question (and the wrapper) and cant find any error handling that is relevent (there one try and catch block completely separate at the end of the wrapper procedure for a small routine).

Any help is always appreciated!

SSN varchar(20),
State varchar(2)

Sample Data:

ID SSN STATE
1 999-000-000 AB
2 979-000-000 BC
3 995-000-000 CD
=================================

We used filter logic based on the SSN & State.

We are passing these values through variables like

Declare @State varchar(2)
Declare @SSN varchar(20)

While run time these values are lets suppose @SSN = '999-000-000' & @State='ABC'

Now the Result is displayed with the state data Like 'AB' only.

Output: 1 999-000-000 AB

instead it should give system generated error.

Here I have 2 Questions:
1. Why it is taking 1st 2 Charecters?
2. Why it does not have any system generated for length?

I can do validation with Length function for these 2 variables however if have 100 variables then it should not feasible case. So, what is the reason behind?

Jul 20, 2005

Dear All,I have written an update trigger that should write a message to an audittable When I try to update any field in the table I recieve the followingerror message -[ODBC Sql Server Driver] [Sql Server] Stirng or Binary data would betrunicated[ODBC Sql Server Driver] [Sql Server] The statement has been termined.I have looked and what has been suggested is to use the response.write len()to check the length of field that I am updating. Being fairly new toSQL-Server, I do not know how to do this. Any help will be most welcome. Thanks,Jeff
