Error Bulk Loading CSV File With &" Quotes
Jun 16, 2008
Hi,
I have a csv file with 1.8 million records. Few of the text columns in each row has commas(,) in them and hence those columns are enclosed by " ".
An example record would look like:
123,abc,"abc, city, state",222,...
Now, the 3rd column should be read as: abc, city, state
But, it is reading ("abc) into 3rd column, and (city) into 4th column and (state") into 4th column resulting in data errors.
Is there a way to specify that fields are optionally enclosed by " as we do in Oracle?
Thanks,
Anil

I'm trying to use Bulk insert for the first time and getting the following error. I think it might have something to do with my Format File and from the error msg there's a conversion error for the first column. In my database the Field is nvarchar(6) so my best guess is to use SQLNChar for the first column. I've checked the end of each line is CR LF therefore the is correct for line 7 right?

Hi,
I want to import in a table a file like this one, with a comma separator:
France, 1 , 1
"Congo,Démocratique", 1,2
Is there any options for Bulk Insert like this in Sybase :
LOAD [ INTO ] TABLE [ owner ].table-name [( column-name , ... )]
FROM 'filename -string '
[ load-option ... ]
Parameters
load-option :
CHECK CONSTRAINTS { ON | OFF }
| DEFAULTS { ON | OFF }
| DELIMITED BY string
| ESCAPE CHARACTER character
| ESCAPES { ON | OFF }
| FORMAT ASCII
| QUOTES { ON | OFF }
| STRIP { ON | OFF }
| WITH CHECKPOINT { ON | OFF }
or should we change the pre processing of our log files ??
Thanks to your answers

Hi Guys,I’m trying to do a Bulk Insert but I am receiving the following error:
conversion error (type mismatch or invalid character for the specified codepage) for row 2, column 8 (Phone).Bulk load data conversion error (type mismatch or invalid character for the specified codepage) for row 1, column 8 (Phone).".
Task failed: dbo.tblNoName
The data is comma delimited which I stipulated in my Import Connection section. But the data also has quotes around it (ie. The field Lname nvarchar (17) = “Brown and the field phone nvarchar (10) = “12345678921. Is there a way to ignore the quotes or do I have to remove them before I import?
Or is my problem something else all together?
The connection is solid;
Format = “Specify
RowDelimiter = {CR}{LF}
columnDelimiter = Comma {,}
No other options are set.
The data looks like:
"tstLName","tstFname","000 N Tst DR","IDAHO sp","ID","00000000",
Thank you,

Hello,
I deployed an SSIS project to my SQL Server. The project I deployed contained two packages. One called the other. After deployment I notice that both packages are indeed in the SQL Server. However when I try to run it I get the error below. This error happens during the "Execute Package Task" and the path the error is pointing at is my local development path, not the one it was deployed to. Is there any way to fix the path? And how can I get it to deploy both packages so it knows where they are when I run it from the server?
Error 0x80070003 while loading package file "C:VS ProjectsTestingRun Codes to DBRun Codes to DBSofAid_DBRefresh.dtsx". The system cannot find the path specified.
Thank You

Hi,
I have a problem loading data from a flat file into a DB2 Dtabase by using the OLE DB Provider for DB2.

I dont know waht those error codes meanand I tried so many things already. Hey Everyone,
I have a Data-Flow task embedded in a Sequence Container (does not fail component on error) on the Control Flow panel of the SSIS designer. This data flow task contains a connection to a Flat File Source -> A Data Transformation -> Into an OLE Db Destination.
The problem is that the Flat File isn't always delimited properly -> the client cannot be relied on to do this.
My question is when the delimiters are messed up, how can I capture the offending error row(s) from the Flat File Source?
What I've tried:
1) Set every column in the source flat file on error to: Redirect Row
2) Added a Script Transformation to pull the description and the record id out of the offending row
3) Added an Error file flat file destination to the end of the flow.
The package always fails on the Flat File Source and never Redirects the offending Row to the error output - I never see my onError Script Transformation go Green, Red, or Yellow - SSIS doesn't let it get there.
I'm really new to SSIS so sorry if this is a super basic question.
Here is the Error Text:
[Source - InventTable_csv [1]] Error: The column delimiter for column "RECID" was not found.
[Source - InventTable_csv [1]] Error: An error occurred while processing file "C:------InventTable.csv" on data row 15228.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The PrimeOutput method on component "Source - InventTable_csv" (1) returned error code 0xC0202092. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: Thread "SourceThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0047038.
I do have the MaxErrorCount set to 1 on the Data Flow Task but still think I should see my script task execute and a log entry be generated.
Any Ideas?
Matt

Using BCP or BULK INSERT you can specify an Error File (-e and ERRORFILE). However this does not seem to be exposed in SSIS via the Bulk Insert Task.
Does anyone know if I'm missing something and the Property is called something else or if can be accessed via script?
Cheers,

Msg 4862, Level 16, State 1, Server PATH-SQLDEV, Line 2
Cannot bulk load because the file "c:DATABATCHBCPFormat.fmt" could not be read. Operating system error code (null).
Above is the error I get. The problem is I do not know what is causing this error. It occurs when I attempt to use SQLCMD with bulk insert.
I am using SQLserver 2005 and I have a similar set up in a test database that works, why this format file does not is beyond me, but my experience is when the format file has an error in it, such as a mispelled datatype or a incorrect column number, the error will zero in on that, rather then declare the entire file unreadable. Furthermore if I go into the file, change something so where it is incorrect (like a column number) it will zero in on that error. So I know that the format file can be read. If I knew what this error was all about I would at least know where to begin in fixing it. I have also tried using a very small sample file for the data being inserted. Same error.
Please help

Hello
I am trying to bulk insert a text file into SQL 2005 table. When I execute the bulk insert I get the error
"Msg 4860, Level 16, State 1, Line 1. Cannot bulk load. The file "\ENDUSER-SQLEnduserTextB1020063.txt" does not exist."
The text file that it is saying does not exist I recently created thru my code. I can open the file but only when I rename the file will the Bulk Insert work. After creating the text file I am moving it to the server that SQL server is running on. Also if I run sp_FileExists it also says the file does not exist unless again I rename the file then this stored procedure recognizes the file. I dont' know if I have a permission issue or what is the problem. Any help would be appreiated.
Thanks

Short version:
The best/fastest way to load large amounts of data from a comma delimited text file into an SQL Server table. Where the text file contains date fields in ccyy/mm/dd format and the SQL Server table defines those fields as datetime data types.
Details:
When I attempt to load files (using either bcp or BULK INSERT) containing datetime data the load process errors because the datetime fields in my text file are in ccyy/mm/dd format and the default format for SQL Server is mm/dd/yy. I have been unable to change the default format by using the SET DATEFORMAT statement (apparently the SET DATEFORMAT statement will not work for bcp because bcp runs outside of the SQL Server session???).
The only alternatives that I have come up with are: 1) Change the format of date fields in the text file from ccyy/mm/dd to mm/dd/ccyy. 2) Create a temporary table that defines the date fields as a char(n) datatype. Then load the data into the temp table. Then SET the DATEFORMAT to ccyy/mm/dd. Then copy the temp table into the permanent table (the permanent table using datetime data types).
Both of these alternatives would require additional processing time. Since this is a process that loads large amounts of data on a monthly (soon to be weekly) basis, speed is of the essence.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks!

I have several 2012 availability groups running on a cluster. I have one database that is bulk loaded every 30 minutes. The DB is about 1 GB in size. To be on the availability group it has to be set to full recovery mode, but simple or even bulk would obviously be better. Is there a better way to handle the transaction log size other than to run a backup after each bulk load causing extra overhead? With mirrors you could use simple, but since those are going away . . .

Hi All,
my dba folks are coming back with an answer to a question that sounds strange and I thought I would check on here.
Situation.
We are using an ETL tool I developed to move data around and building a DW on 2005. In some cases we are using the bulk loader to load and in some cases the tool itself.
One of the defaults of the tool is to truncate trailing blanks....and so fields that contain only blanks get truncated to a zero length character string.
When reloading the data with the tool it carries a null indicator next to the field value so the zero length character string is loaded as not null.
When loading with the bulk loader the dbas are telling me that the field is translated to a null. Note that they want some fields translated to null so they are using the keepnulls parameter.
On other databases (and built into the tool because this is so) the bulk loaders usually allow the specification of the load statement at column level and the specification of a 'null character sting' to be translated to null if this string is found. I put an example below.
I seem to recall that SQL Server 7 had some sort of bulk loader that allowed specification of columns at column level......for example offsets or whatever and the specification of fields to be interpreted as nulls. (Though that was a long time ago.)
I have searched through the manual and I don't see an option there any more to specify a character that will be interpreted to a null by the bulk loader.
Is it possible in 2005 to specify a character such that when the bulk loader sees it the field will be set to null?? And not just set fields to null which are not present in the load file?
(Just by the way, we are going to make the truncate trailing blanks optional and it's easy....it's just that I thought this kind of null if option was available in 2005 and I am keen to know if it is not there, either gone or never was...)
Thanks in Advance and Best Regards
Peter
Example of how Oracle does it...on page

NULLIF Keyword
Use the NULLIF keyword after the datatype and optional delimiter specification, followed by a condition. The condition has the same format as that specified for a WHEN clause. The column's value is set to null if the condition is true. Otherwise, the value remains unchanged. NULLIF field_condition
The NULLIF clause may refer to the column that contains it, as in the following example: COLUMN1 POSITION(11:17) CHAR NULLIF (COLUMN1 = "unknown")

My colleague is working on bulk insert task from SSIS and since the data file does not contain any valid delimeter one of the suggestion he got is to use a file format to address the issue. Thus a bcp command is used to generate the format file, as per below.
bcp <database name>.dbo.<table name> format nul -T -S <server name> -n -f out.fmt
The file file format was generated, from the data flow we added the BULK INSERT task and set the properties accordingly including the File Format and location of the file. Upon running the task itself we encountered the error as per below.
[Bulk Insert Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Cannot bulk load. The file "C:HFISTAT.fmt" does not exist.".
Progress: The Bulk Insert task is completed. - 100 percent complete
Task Bulk Insert Task failed
Have checked the file and it is in C: drive and it is not protected or read-only. Validated the output file and it is as per expected. Any help would be appreciated very much.

I've been working on an SSIS package trying to load some data and the archive sequence is faulty. I've been trying to load a few tables created in a previous sequence into a local archive file and I've been getting the error "Could not find a part of the path."
The results aren't telling me what it's finding last and so I don't know where to start.
And the source DOES have data in it. It's something between the source and the destination.

Hi,
Iam trying to import data from a csv file into my table in SQL Server 2000. My table is called as temp_table and consists of 3 fields.
column datatype
-------- -----------
program nvarchar(20)
description nvarchar(50)
pId int
pId has been set to primary key with auto_increment.
My csv file has 2 columns of data and it looks like follows:
program, description
"prog1", "this is program1"
"prog2", "this is program2"
"prog3", "this is program3"
Now i use BULK INSERT like this
"BULK INSERT ord_programs FROM 'C:datafile.csv' WITH (FIELDTERMINATOR=',', ROWTERMINATOR='', FIRSTROW=2)"
to import data into my table in SQL server and it gives me this error
"Bulk insert data conversion error (type mismatch) for row 2, column 3 (pId)"
I guess i have to use fileformat or something since i dont have anything for pId field in the csv file to make it work...
Please help me out guys and please post a snippet of code if you have.
Thank You.

I try to import data with bulk insert. Here is my table:
CREATE TABLE [data].[example](
 col1 [varchar](10) NOT NULL,
 col2 [datetime] NOT NULL,
 col3 [date] NOT NULL,
 col4 [varchar](6) NOT NULL,
 col5 [varchar](3) NOT NULL,
[Code] ....
My format file:
10.0
7
1Â SQLCHAR 0 Â 10Â "@|@"Â 2Â Col2Â ""
1Â SQLCHAR 0 Â 10Â "@|@"Â 3Â Col3Â ""
2Â SQLCHAR 0 Â 6Â "@|@"Â 4Â Col4Â Latin1_General_CI_AS
[Code] .....
The first column should store double (in col2 and col3) in my table
My file:
Col1,Col2,Col3,Col4,Col5,Col6,Col7
2015-04-30@|@MDDS@|@ADP@|@EUR@|@185.630624@|@2015-04-30@|@MDDS
2015-04-30@|@MDDS@|@AED@|@EUR@|@4.107276@|@2015-04-30@|@MDDS
My command:
bulk insert data.example
from 'R:epoolexample.csv'
WITH(FORMATFILE = 'R:cfgexample.fmt' , FIRSTROW = 2)
Get error:
Msg 4823, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Cannot bulk load. Invalid column number in the format file "R:cfgexample.fmt".
I changed some things as:
used ";" and "," as column delimiter
changed file type from UNIX to DOS and adjusted the format file with "
" for row delimiter
Removed this line from format file
1Â SQLCHAR 0 Â 10Â "@|@"Â 2Â Col2Â ""
Nothing works ....

I am facing a issue with bulk upload on Test Server.
Issue: When running Openrowset command from SQL server other that Test Server query runs fine when trying to run the same command from Test Server it gives error.
Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot bulk load because the file "\ServerNameinputFileName.csv" could not be opened. Operating system error code 5(Access is denied.).
For example: If the command is run from System A connecting to SQL Server instance on Test Server Test Server it gives this error. If the same command with same rights is run from any other SQL server instance say Dev1 its running fine.
If the command is run from Test Server connecting to any SQL Server instance including Test Server it is running fine.
Tried: 1) Given the read/write rights on shared folder, to user under which the SQL server service is running on Test Server
2) Given the read/write rights on shared folder to everyone.
Query:
SELECT DISTINCT * FROM OPENROWSET
(
BULK '\ServerNameinputFileName.csv',
FORMATFILE='\ServerNameFormat.xml'
)
AS FileList
Please provide me with some solution. What can be the reason for such behaviour?

I have a lot of data coming in from CSV files. I have many CSV files (~20), with varying amounts of data- but some are quite large (largest file is ~230mb)
I'm trying to import it into a SQL database via SSIS, but the data is a little bit frustrating.
I have data that looks like this:
"Text from vendor ""Vendor Name, Inc."" blah blah", "Next string", "", 1234
Many things to notice here - as well you can imagine some of the difficulties here.
After parsing, this data should have 4 columns-
Column1 Column2 Column3 Column4
Text From Vendor "Vendor Name, Inc." blah blah Next string <blank> 1234
The biggest problems stem from the double quotes mixed in with the comma because it is a comma delimited file with quotes as the text qualifier. The other problem is the double quotes with blank text ... which prevents me from doing a replace on the double quotes ... I think ...
What would be your suggestions to help me parse this out? (don't forget, some of these are large files with about 260,000 records- )
Thanks in advance,
Rob

I've an issue with double-quotes in CSV file. One of the columns may contain this kind of value: "STATUS ""H"" "
I've got quote set to "
The file source fails on such records.
I found this thread and Scott tells us there that the file can't contain " in data.
Is this 100% correct?
I've got mutliple text columns and the pain is that I don't know which column might have these cases in future. To create a script means to write my own file parser for all files I use.
Any ideas?
Dima.
