Error Connecting New Data Source To SQL Server Express
Dec 8, 2006
In ODBC Data Source Administrator, I add the SQL Server driver, complete a name and select my local SQL Server instance, select Windows NT authentication (the client configuration is set to TCP/IP, dynamically determine port) and on clicking Next, the following errors occur:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server error: 2
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
I note that in the Help it says: "The SQL Server system administrator must have associated your Microsoft Windows login with a SQL Server login ID".
Is this the problem? If so, where do I make this association?
Thanking you in anticipation.

Hi,
I am new to SQL server and am experiencing problems with connecting to SQL server express from my VS C++ 6. Since its just the start, I am trying to play around with data access on the computer with the server installed.
I want to connect to the server through ODBC and understand that I can do so by first creating a data source. However, at the Data Source Administrator, there were errors when connecting to the server. I tried with different server names, with Shared memory/TCP/Named pipes enabled(in all combinations) at the Configuration Manager but to no avail.
However, I am able to contact to the server through Shared memory at the Management Studio Express. I don't know what is wrong.
Let me know if you need extra information to give me assistance.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I'm a newbie who is trying to create a connection to the server in my website application and I keep getting the following error: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. I enabled TCP/IP and Pipe in the configuration and restarted the engine and server but I still get this error and it's stressing me out. I've been trying to configure remote connections to my sql server express to no avail.
First here are some constants to clear some things up:
- OS: Windows XP Pro
- SQL Express version: April CTP release
- Windows Firewall: disabled (to avoid any problems there)
- Network type: two computers connected a router.
- Router firewall: Enabled (I may be wrong but the router firewall only blocks external traffic, so I left it on.)
First, I configured my SQL server to allow remote connections in the SQL Surface Area Configuration. (Set it to both TCP/IP and named pipes)
Second, I enabled and configured sql server browser.
Third, I enabled TCP/IP and named pipes in the 'Protocols for SQL Express' option of the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
According to http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx
I have done everything I need to (including edit the registry to enable the SQL Server Browser service) and the error I continue to get is:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)"
So I tinkered and had no success in messing with anything that would fix it. Although, ***when I browsed for network servers on different machine, the server instance DID show up in the list***. So I find it odd that it can find the instance when browsing, but fails to 'find' it when making a connection.
So I didn't stop there, I decided to try the non-sql server browser method of remotely connecting: specifying the IP.
I went back to the blog of instructions referenced above and re-did the steps, this time specifying a TCP Port for the server instance and then after specifying the port on the remote computer connection string, and attempting to connect, I get this error:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060)"
I've done all I know how, read all the possible blogs I can, and nothing's come up. If anyone can shed some light on me, I'd pay you 1 billion pretend dollars. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

A data reader is using a connection manager to connect to an ODBC System DSN . A query in the SqlCommand property is provided. Data is being truncated in the only string column . The data type in data reader output-->external columns shows as Unicode string [DT_WSTR] Length 7.
The truncated output in a text file is the first 3 characters from left to right . Changing the column order has no effect.
A linked server was created in SQL Server Management Studio to test the ODBC System DSN using the following:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'server_name',
@srvproduct = '',
@provider = 'MSDASQL',
@datasrc = 'odbc_dsn_name'
Data returned using "OPENQUERY" does not truncate the string column indicating that the ODBC Driver returns data as expected with sql 2005, but not with the Data Reader.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express, Windows XP SP2. I connect using Windows authentication.
The data source that I'm trying to hit is on a remote server. It's an OpenLink ODBC Data source, and the server is in another location. SQL Server 2005 Express and the ODBC connection are both installed/configured locally on my machine.
I can connect to the remote server. The DSN exists as a System DSN.
The DSN has its own proprietary configuration utility, which I can configure so that the server name is XPLILLEYGSQLEXPRESS. The configuration utility doesn't care; I connect successfully one way or the other.
When I open Management Studio Express, I can see my database (CMS) listed under the "Databases" folder, but there's no tables in there, other than the system tables.
So my question is, what am I missing?
Thanks

Hi,
I have my datasource in Oracle9i and destination is Sql2005. I am connecting to Oracle 9i through OLEDb provider and when I connect to my DataSource using OLE DB Data Source, I get the following error:
Warning at "guid code": Cannot retreive the column code page info from the oledb provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. If the component does not support the property, the code page from the component's locale Id will be used.
Could anyone please help me trouble shoot this problem.

I'm trying to connect to the sample database (rs2005sbsDW) that I installed from a CD that came with the book SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. When I try to connect to this database in the report wizard following instructions on page 41, it tells me my database doesn't exist. The following path was entered into the New Project dialog box which does exist. C:Documents and SettingsBrett SomersMy DocumentsMicrosoft PressRS2005SBSworkspace. The book guides me to enter Localhost as the server name. The rs2005sbsDW database does not appear in the "select or enter a database name" dropdown field.

Hi,
We are in the process of upgrading a SQL Server 2000 database to 2005. For the mean time, we're trying it out on SQL Server Express 2005. My question is, can reports in SSRS 2005 pull data from SQL Server 2000 in case both are installed side by side in the same machine and the 2000 version is the default instance while the 2005 express edition is the named instance?
Thanks a lot!

I am attempting to insert information from Visual Web Developer 2005 using either the Gridview or Datalist controls into a SQL Server 2005 database and get stuck when defining the custom statement. When I enter the text within the insert tab, the <next> button remains greyed out, preventing me from continuing to the next page.If I copy the same text into the select tab, then I can continue with the wizard, however this raises other problems which may or may not be related (multiple insertions of the data into the SQL Server database table - possibly due to postback functions). I would rather use insert to confirm that my second problem is not because I am using the wrong option. My question is:Should I be able to use the insert function within VWD express or is this only available within the standard/pro editions?

Hopefully there's an easy answer for this. I'm totally new to SQL server and I'm trying to upsize an Access database. Whether I use the upsizing wizard or try to create a data source through the ODBC Data Source Administrator, I get a connection failed error. It tells me the server does not exist or my login is incorrect. I'm using NT authentication to connect to the server on my local drive. I just installed the whole 2005 express edition and the only thing that came up during the install was that I didn't have IIS installed. I didn't see how that would be relevant, so I went ahead with the install.
Shouldn't this work with the default setup? I've searched around trying different "solutions" although I doubt they were specifically related to this very basic problem. I tried giving my login every right I could find through in the database engine properties in the server management studio, which connects fine itself with just my network login name and no password. What am I missing?

How do I get rid of this error message when tring to log into my web site user account stored on the default ASP.NET 2.o generated database on my local computer?
Server Error in '/FundACure.org' Application.
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'LANBOYASPNET'.
Where "LANBOY" is the name of my computer. I am logged in as myself "LANBOYKEVIN" My web page is trying to log into the server using the name "ASPNET" which I assume is a standard ASPNET user name.
I thought it was failing because I needed to grant access to this user in the server, so I added the account for the server. Same problem.
So I thought I needed to create this user in my Windows XP user list. When I tried it said "this user already exists" even though it isn't displayed in the list. That is when I realized that it is a standard user established by ASP.NET. It is probably supplied in the C# code through a base class.
So, how do I get this DB to connect? Is the user missing, or is it that my connection string is wrong?

Really confused ... I created 2 tables in a VB Express program (which went well). Problem is that I can't see/find those tables with MSME. I don't really understand how to connect the MSME to where the tables are. I created the tables under My DocumentsData and they are DBapp.mdf + DBapp_log.LDF and the tables are Items and Preferences. The VB application can "see" the tables OK.
Do I need to move the tables to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSQL.1MSQLDATA (like the Adventureworks installation which I haven't done) or what?
Please help a newbie
Thanks

I have seen several posts on the subject, and have tried various configs. At this point, I am simply trying to connect to SQL Express, that's all.
I have an app. in MS Access that uses SQL Express as a back-end database (this is the simple desktop version of our software). I don't remember having so many issues with just connecting to a small db engine on a single computer..! Just to get it off my chest, there was a post about this subject where someone listed more than 15 items to check... If anyone at Microsoft is reading... connections should not require a 15-item check-list.. People running sql express are not creating a sophisticated database system, probably running it because, they want a free, easy solution, and do not have an IT person, nor are they intersted in reading any 1 of the 15 items... Just trying to connect to the instance of the database that runs on the same computer.... that should not require more than possibly 3 different settings.
My objective at this point, is simply to connect! Nothing else.
My environment settings are:
OS: Win XP Professional
MS Access(2003) and SQL Express both installed on the same computer
All connection attempts are on the same computer
SQL Express is installed in mixed mode
SQL Browser running, Network DDE running (if needed)
All Network protocols are enabled (tried disabling and enabling each 1 at a time as well)
All Client protocols are enabled
I tried setting network library to "dbmssocn", and left blank for default (uses namedpipes)
I tried using host name, localhost, and IP address for servername (with the SQLEXPRESS of course)
Also tried leaving it blank
I tried with Integrated security, also tried with the user "sa" and "test" user (both enabled and capable of logging in and accessing the database)
I tested the connection from SQL Express Manager, successfully connected in all modes (secure, and with SQL users) to make sure there are no issues with the users or security.
Tried turning the SQL browser off (this should not be needed in local mode)
Tried using an alias
Tried using attach database as a filename
And, the firewall is turned off.
Always getting the error "....connection failed because of an error in initializing provider" (whether using namedpipes, or TCP, or shared mem)
Both SQL Express and Access are installed on the computer, that should include the providers...
Please let me know if there is anything left for checking and/or trying... Appreciate your help...

Should I be able to use a SQL Server Compact Edition sdf file as the data source for the SSIS Import and Export Wizard?
When I select the .net Framework Provider for compact Edition from the data source drop down, I get a message box with "An error occured which the SSIS Wizard was not prepared to handle. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (mscorlib) Specified method is not supported. (System.Data.SqlServerCe)"
We have a user with a sdf file that will no longer sync, so we wanted to get her data from sdf file tables into SQL Server tables quickly and easily. Since the SSIS wizard wouldn't work with the sdf data source, we copied SQL Server Mgmt Studio query results into an Excel spreadsheet via the Clipboard, them imported those records with SSIS. But we need a repeatable process in case this happens in the future.
We tried to reinitialize her merge replication subscription with SQL Server Mgmt studio, and with C# code, but none of that would work.
How many MS data provider options are available for SQL Server compact edition? I see ".Net Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition" in the SSIS data source drop down, but shouldn't I also see an OLE-DB Provider for SQL Server Compact Edition?
This is all on my XP workstation where I can successfully write C# code for SQL Server Compact data access with Assembly = System.Data.SqlServerCe = C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEPublicAssembliesSystem.Data.SqlServerCe.dll. So I think I have the proper tools installed.
Thanks.

String or binary data would be truncated. I get this error when entering data using sql server management studio express.
I am not running a sql to insert or update the table. This is through the EDI.
The data type is varchar(100). I enter one character and it errors on me. So this isn't a string being too long problem.
Any ideas?

Hi All,
I want to connect to SQLExpress database on the network. I can do so using code but I want to use the Data Source Configuration Wizard. It seems this only works for local instances of SQL server. Is this true?
I can connect just fine to the database on the network using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express...for what this is worth.
I have tried to map a drive to the SQL server machine and pick the mdf file but I get the error msg of network path is not supported for database files....I have turned on allow remote connections, allow tcp/ip, named pipes, added sqlserv.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to my firewall exceptions ect..
I want to be able to use Table Adapters, SqlDataAdapters ect. After reading numerous forum questions/ kb articles this seems to be a common problem. I am on the verge of just saying forget it and use MS Access instead.
Thanks in advance!

I tried going data flow->excel connection->advanced editor for excel source-> input and output properties and tried to refresh the columns affected.
It seems that somehow the 3 columns are not read in from the source file?
ans alslo fiscal year, fiscal week is not set up up properly in my data destination?

I want my XML Data source to be an expression as i will be looping through a directory of xml files.
I don't see the expression property or the connection property??
