Moved Aspnetdb To SQL Server - What Permissions Do I Need To Give The ASP IIS Service Account For That? (Getting: Cannot Open Database Aspnetdb Requested By The Login. The Login Failed.)

May 12, 2008

I am getting the error:
Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed.
When I browse to my ASP.NET 3.5 LINQ web application on the IIS 6.0 server on Server 2003.
I imagine this is because while I granted SQL Server 2005 login and permissions to my database that the application stores its data in, I did NOT grant any rights to the service account the IIS Application Pool uses for its identity to the aspnetdb database on SQL Server which is where all my roles information is stored at.
My question is what are the MINIMUM permissions needed for this database so it can perform its roles related functions?
I'm using Windows Authentications with the SQL Role provider for authorization.

Thank you.

EDIT: I think I only need to open the aspnetdb database and add my login to the aspnet_Roles_FullAccess role. Is that correct?

How Can I Open A .mdf AspnetDB DataBase ?

Jul 24, 2007

Hello everybody, I am working with SqlExpress and MSSQL Server Management Studio Express and do not manage to open the aspnetDB .mdf database in which I am storing all data about my users.I woulds like to open it and to be able to request it in order to check some strange things.Actually, I'm experiencing an isssue with that database since the request just below gives me two results for only one user: SELECT Member.Password, Member.PasswordAnswer
FROM aspnet_MemberShip Member, aspnet_Users Users
WHERE Member.UserId=Users.UserId AND Users.UserName='Admin' Using this request returns me a user whom password is clear and an identical user whom password is hashed whereas I set PasswordFormat="Clear" in my Web.ConfigCould you explain me how I may proceed please? Thanx for your help

Can't Open Aspnetdb.mdf File

May 21, 2008

I am fairly new to ASP.NET and MSSQL but when I run my website with memberships and roles everything seems to work perfectly!! NO PROBLEMS!! However when I try to go and actually open the ASPNETDB.MDF database file that was automatically created by VB when I added a login and sign up panel I get this Error Message
"An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsoxMy DocumentsMy Webs nsApp_DataASPNETDB.MDF failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I don't really know why I can't open this file. I have someone who is going to help with some extra database work but asked if I could open this database so he could see the structure of it. I have a copy of the website as backup in another folder on my computer but even removing that backup does nothing in helping open the original. THANKS PLEASE HELP!

Connecting Users From ASPNETDB.MDF To A Shopping Cart And Order History

Jan 2, 2007

I'm trying to figure out how to associate users in my ASPNETDB.MDF to create a shopping cart.IE: I have 3 tables, for a list of existing orders, list of products, and list of specific orders.The idea is for users who've signed up with the built-in user creation control, can then place orders from the shopping cart, and view their existing previous orders. This would normally be done with a unique UserID # to associate orders with specific users, however I don't BELIEVE there's anything like UserID's associated with each user in the ASPNETDB.MDF, it just uses usernames as the unique identifiers right?Anyway I'm not sure I'm explaining what I'm trying to do perfectly and I apologize, but I don't think it's an un-common problem I'm having. Basically I'm trying to avoid having to have existing ASPNETDB users create a sort of SECOND user that would associate them into a seperate Customers table, it seems like extra user steps that shouldn't be necessary.

but when i open the SQL Server 2005 express edition and connect to the server (inside the same computer) and run the code again ,the Open() function fails with the exception :

Error Connecting To Database - Please Help

Oct 11, 2007

When i am trying to connect to SQL Server(Express edition) on production server i am getting the following error.
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No such host is known.)" My SQL connection string is like this which i wrote in web.config.
<add key="conn1" value="Data Source=xxx.xxx.x.xxxyz,1433;Initial Catalog=abcdef_xyz;persist Security Info=true;User ID=xx;Password=xxxxxx"/>
string constr = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["conn1"]; SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(constr);
con.Open();
When i searched microsoft help to resolve this error, it suggested me to enable TCP/IP protocol for SQL server, i did that, but even after doing that i am still not able to connect to the database. Could any one please tell me what else i need to configure in order to connect to the database.

Error Connecting To Database?

Sep 7, 2005

Hi Again,I have MSDE on ASP1.1 on a PC and have a logon page that uses a stored procedure to check my auth_user table, if logon and password exist then it returns (1) else returns (0).I used objparams.return to pick up the returned value and either server.transfer to opening page or label text message 'login not valid'. This is insde a try and the catch is another label, 'cannot connect to database'.Running on my local PC all is fine, transferred SP and table to hosting server, along with web.comfig set to the host servername, uid, password and database. On the host server all errors messages are returned. I have created a connection in my VS7 database manager to the remote host and the same happens after amending my connection string to run on the remote server.It clearly is the connection string, I am using the <appsettings> add Key to connect as I thought it would mean no change of coding in my pages when moving from Dev PC to Server. I have checked the hosting server setup and used the server name associated with the database (mssql3.securedc.com) , checked uid, password and database settings. Is there something I have missed like permissions, specific security settings on the host server (I have to go through a third party as the hosting is done through a friend of my client)?? Many thanksEarle

Error In Connecting To Database

May 19, 2015

I've remoted into our domain controller which houses our SQL database. From there I've been using the Microsoft SQL Database manager to run queries. However, I would prefer to do this from my desktop and not have to remote in whenever I need to look something up. I've found that Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2013 can create a connection where I can do my work. I've created the connection (or I believe so). "Testing the connection" is successful and in the Database Explorer window I can see my database and the folders of tables, views, etc. However, all of these folders are empty..When I choose the database everything in the settings pops up and I use the same authetication I use on the domain controller..

Cannot Open User Database Error Message AFTER I Connect And Log In.

Aug 29, 2006

Ok so I'm using the Management Studio Express and was able to log in and get into the database server, but I had to click the "options>>" button and change database I wanted to connect to from <<default>> to my database on the server or else I get the "cannot open user database, login failed" error message.Then I right click my database and it gives me the "Cannot open user database. Login failed" error message, even though I already connected to the database to login during the connect screen. Also I'm able to interact with the database using SQL QUERIES in the Management Studio, like adding new tables with it, but if I right click the database and click "add table" I get that error.What gives? I know I have permission since I was able to log on, and modify the database using SQL queries but if use the GUI I can't use it. I can't even right-click select "properties" without getting that error. The reason I want to use the GUI is because I want to right click and use the backup feature of the database.My guess is that Management Studio continues to point to the default database(which gives me that message) after I already logged in, so I have no idea how to change the default database that management studio points to, to the one I do have permission to use. Thanks in advance.

-use sp_attach to attach db2 as db1 (rename database)

When I connect in Query Analyzer via SQL Authentication I get the error, however via any other method it works fine.

Error, Unable To Open Database After Install On XP Computer

Jan 24, 2008

I'm new to .NET and VB2008 and trying to write my first database application. It runs fine on my development PC (Vista) but I decided to publish/install an early beta to my daughters XP computer and am getting an error reading: Unable to open database.

The CD drive on that pc has been giving us trouble so I deployed to a subdirectory on the dev pc and moved those files to a thumbdrive, copied to the same subdirectory on client pc and installed from there. I've installed it more than once, trying different paths for the installed version hoping that was the issue but have hit a wall. Can anybody help?

Error Connecting Database Server

Oct 18, 2007

Hi,
    I am getting the following error when i am trying to connect to the database server installed on different box.
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. <add key="conn2" value="Data Source=xxxxxxxx;Initial Catalog=xxxxxx_xxxxxx;User ID=xx;Password=xxxxxx;"/>
Could any one please tell me what else the configuration settings i need to do in order to connect to the database from my application.

Strange Error When Connecting To Database.

May 11, 2008

Hello,
I'm tyring a simple piece of code to conenct to my database: SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection("Data Source=localhost; Initial Catalog=OrderingSystem; Integrated Security=SSPI");
try
{
// Try to open the connection.
con.Open();
label1.Text = "<b>Server Version: " + con.ServerVersion;
label1.Text += "<br />Connection Is: " + con.State.ToString();
}
catch (Exception err)
{
// Handle an error by displaying the information.
label1.Text = "Error reading the database. " + err.Message;
}
finally
{
// Either way, make sure the connection is properly closed.
// Even if the connection wasn't opened successfully,
// calling Close() won't cause an error.
con.Close();
label1.Text += "<br />Now Connection Is: " +
con.State.ToString();
}
When I try this, I get an error:"Error reading the database. Cannot open database "OrderingSystem" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'."
The strange thing is, this code works perfectly If I use it in a Windows Forms application.
Is it a problem with SQL server, IIS or my code?I'm using SQL Server 2005 (SP2) 32bit developer edition + IIS 6.0 + Visual Studio 2008 Pro all runnign on my Windows XP x64 PC.
Thankyou

Strange Error On Linked Server - Cannot Open Default Database

Apr 16, 2007

Hi,We have 2 servers. Server1 is a 2000 box, with SP3 (yes I know it isnot up to date). Server2 is a 2005 box, SP2.I set up Server1 (2000) to have a linked server to Server2 (2005). Thereason I did this is because we are using a stored procedure onServer2 to send mail, as we have found that using mail on 2000 doesn'talways work as advertised.When I set up the linked server on the 2000 box, for security I justset it up to use a SQL Server user on the 2005 box. The SQL Serveruser on the 2005 box has permissions to run the stored procedure forsending mail.Here's the weird thing though. When calling the stored procedure onthe 2005 box from the 2000 box, sometimes we get an error that "Thedefault database cannot be opened", and the query does not run on the2005 box. However, it only happens *sometimes*. Other times, the queryruns fine.Since the problem seeemed to be with the default database, I changedthe SQL Server user on 2005 default database to the SAME database thatcontains the stored procedure.However, I just don't understand why it's even TRYING to open thedefault database, since when we called the linked server we are doingso as, and it's referencing the default database in the name:EXEC Server2.DefaultDatabase.dbo.StoredProcedureNameHowever, after changing the user's default database to"DefaultDatabase" as shown above, the query runs fine.Why are we having this problem? That is, if I change the defaultdatabase to something other than "DefaultDatabase", then the querydoesn't run, even though the database name is referenced in the abovequery??Obviously, this is not desireable, because that means we can only runqueries that are in "DefaultDatabase", which may not always be thecase.Thanks much

it works fine.

but when i open the SQL Server 2005 express edition and connect to the server (inside the same computer) to check something and then get back to the VS and run the code again ,the Open() function fails with the exception :

{"Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\asaf_a'."

disconnecting the server doesn't help and even closing the SQL Server 2005 application doesn't help.
Only restarting the computer enables the Open() command to work again.

SQL Express: Cannot Open User Default Database (error 4064)

Aug 8, 2006

I've tried everything I've read that seemed applicable but still have a problem with the same error message, cannot open user default database.

This started detaching the database.

I'm using this connection string:

connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;GC_CashBook.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"

It's a WinForms application.

When I run in debug mode, I connect fine. I can do anything in the db in VisualStudio 2005.

Then I open the SQL Management Studio, connect to Sql Express, try to open the same database and it can't open it.

BUT...

If I stop running the VisualStudio application (I can leave VS open, but not run the app I'm developing),

and reopen SQL Management Studio, connect to Sql Express and open the same db, I can do anything.

It's not just VS and SQL either.

If I open CodeSmith and load a template I use that access the db, I can run my templates fine as long as I'm not running the application in VS or have the db open in SQL Express.

In other words, I can have one connection at a time only on this sql express db.

Before I detached it, I could have multiple connections at the same time.

I checked the properties in sql express and it says I can have multiple (4 is specified) connections at a time;

Allow remote access is also checked.

Arrow/Rick is db owner, the default database is Master.

I don't know any other information to provide.

DId I miss something? How can I get multiple connections working again on this?

Any help would be appreciated!
