Error Editing Data Records In Gridview When Using Convert Function.
Jan 24, 2008
Hello, i currently have a gridview that is populated with data from a SQLServer datasource. I have put an output mask in the select statement, so the date and time attributes are displayed in the format i prefer them to be in. SELECT PatientNo, ConsultantName, HospitalName, CONVERT (varchar, Date, 101), CONVERT (varchar, Time, 8) FROM [Appointment];
However when i click the 'edit' link for a record in the gridview, i am unable to edit the date/time attributes and when i click update to confirm any changes to the other attributes, the values in the date/time attributes are emptied. How can i solve this update problem. I'm guessing i need to configure my SQL UPDATE statement, but bit stuck how i do this. Please help!
Thanks,
James

Hi,
I think the title explains it all really. I cannot configure the SqlDataSource to add Insert, Update and Delete statements - not through the wizard anyway.
The view combines two tables, each containing 3 columns. I have tried using different combinations of columns, and ended up selecting all of them (making sure the foreign key column of the first table was given a different alias to the primary key column of the second table) but I still cannot enable editing.
Cheers,
Patrick

Hi, I'm new in ASP 2.0. I need to incorporate edit and delete capability in GridView. Using the wizard, i've generated this code. When I delete a row, it gets deleted but update does not work. I've tried several ways. I got no error or exception. But row is not updated. I've checked database, and I think the update query is not executing at all. Please let me know, what I'm doing wrong? Here is the source code for reference. I'm using Visual Studio 2005 with SQL server 2005 Express Edition. Regards

Hi, I am seeking a hopefully easy solution to spit back an error message when a user receives no results from a SQL server db with no results. My code looks like this What is in bold is the relevant subroutine for this problem I'm having. Partial Class collegedb_Default Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Protected Sub submit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles submit.Click SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT * FROM [college_db] WHERE [name] like '%" & textbox1.Text & "%'" SqlDataSource1.DataBind() If (SqlDataSource1 = System.DBNull) Then no_match.Text = "Your search returned no results, try looking manually." End If End Sub Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT * FROM [college_db] ORDER BY [name]" SqlDataSource1.DataBind() End Sub Protected Sub reset_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles reset.Click SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT * FROM [college_db] ORDER BY [name]" SqlDataSource1.DataBind() End SubEnd Class I'm probably doing this completely wrong, I'm a .net newb. Any help would be appreciated. Basically I have GridView spitting out info from a db upon Page Load, but i also have a search bar above that. The search function works, but when it returns nothing, I want an error message to be displayed. I have a label setup called "no_match" but I'm getting compiler errors. Also, next to the submit button, I also have another button (Protected sub reset) that I was hoping to be able to return all results back on the page, similar to if a user is just loading the page fresh. I'd think that my logic would be OK, by just repeating the source code from page_load, but that doens't work.The button just does nothing. One final question, unrelated. After I set this default.aspx page up, sorting by number on the bottom of gridview, ie. 1,2,3,4, etc, worked fine. But now that paging feature, as long with the sorting headers, don't work! I do notice on the status bar in the browser, that I receive an error that says, "error on page...and it referers to javascript:_doPostBack('GridView1, etc etc)...I have no clue why this happened. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Can someone help me with this issue? I am trying to update a record using a sp. The db table has an identity column. I seem to have set up everything correctly for Gridview and SqlDataSource but have no clue where my additional, phanton arguments are being generated. If I specify a custom statement rather than the stored procedure in the Data Source configuration wizard I have no problem. But if I use a stored procedure I keep getting the error "Procedure or function <sp name> has too many arguments specified." But thing is, I didn't specify too many parameters, I specified exactly the number of parameters there are. I read through some posts and saw that the gridview datakey fields are automatically passed as parameters, but when I eliminate the ID parameter from the sp, from the SqlDataSource parameters list, or from both (ID is the datakey field for the gridview) and pray that .net somehow knows which record to update -- I still get the error. I'd like a simple solution, please, as I'm really new to this. What is wrong with this picture? Thank you very much for any light you can shed on this.

I have an SP which I use to insert into a table data from another. Forexample...INSERT INTO myWorkTable(Field1, Field2)SELECTmyField1, myField2FROMmyNewTableIt's a pretty straight forward sp. Now, the data that gets insertedseems to have remained in a state that stops me updating it later. TheSP is called by one app which is then closed and not used again untilthe following month. The sp shouldn't be used by anything else.I have another application which goes to the table (in my examplemyWorkTable) and is supposed to open and edit specific records whichit does correctly navigate to (a few days after the sp). It fails andI get an error message stating that the record is being edited byanother user. This record should not be opened by any other process.If I export the data and re-import it into the table, it worksperfectly fine.The code used to edit the table is fine and has worked for a couple ofyears and I'm happy with it. The only change I have made is to use anSP to import the data instead of an old method using Access 2000. Thefunctionality is the same, even though the connection is different.The Delphi app uses BDE.Inserting directly through SQL works as I would have expected and Ican edit the record as I need.I'm guessing that Delphi (which I use for the app) is somehow notfreeing up the data locked by the SP when it finished calling the SP,even when it is closed. However, it seems a little bizarre as I wouldexpect it to free up the data affected by the SP once it has finished(maybe this is the wrong assumption).So, my question is, can an SP lock records in this way ? If so,how/why and can I stop this once finished, or is there a way ofchecking / resetting records which were locked up and should no longerbe this way. I can't see anything obvious which shows the records arelocked, but am willing to delve further.ThanksRyan

I have created a database and used visual basic 2005.net2.0 to build the application. I used the data wizard. it created datatables and then I bound it to the contols on the form. The program is published to the server and each instance loads from the server and executes. When it stops, the instance is destructed from the host pc. The pc's are large ram and very small hard drive. These were the specs of the job. now when each pc loads an instance of the program, they can all load and edit the same exact record. I tried to bust it and I got on the same record and changed first name on one and last name on the other. the second one overwrote the first name edit. All of the data handling is done inside of the dataset designer and it does not allow edits. ( actually you can edit, but the next time you save it, or run it, it will rewrite what you added and it will be gone.) is there anything I can add to the form vb to tell it to lock the current record?

This is killing me. I've searched the forums for hours and can't find the answer. My SQLDataSource is working fine except when I want to delete. I've allowed the delete function to be shown on the gridview. This is my SQLDataSource: <asp:SqlDataSource ID="IndexDataSource" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:IndexConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT *
FROM [Index]
WHERE (Type LIKE '%' + @SearchText2 + '%')
OR (Product LIKE '%' + @SearchText2 + '%')
OR (Version LIKE '%' + @SearchText2 + '%')
OR (Binder LIKE '%' + @SearchText2 + '%')
OR (Language LIKE '%' + @SearchText2 + '%')
OR (CDName LIKE '%' + @SearchText2 + '%')
OR (Details LIKE '%' + @SearchText2 + '%')
OR (ISOLink LIKE '%' + @SearchText2 + '%')"
DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM [Index] WHERE [ID] = @original_ID"
UpdateCommand="UPDATE [Index] SET Type = @Type, Product = @Product , Version = @Version, Binder = @Binder, Language = @Language, CDName = @CDName, Details = @Details, ISOLink = @ISOLink WHERE ID = @ID">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter Name="SearchText2" Type="String" ControlID="SearchText2" PropertyName="Text" ConvertEmptyStringToNull="False" />
</SelectParameters>
<DeleteParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="original_ID" Type="Int32" />
</DeleteParameters>
<UpdateParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="Type" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Product" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Version" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Binder" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Language" />
<asp:Parameter Name="CDName" />
<asp:Parameter Name="Details" />
<asp:Parameter Name="ISOLink" />
</UpdateParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
It doesn't give me an error if I click delete but it doesn't delete the record. I've tried changing the DeleteParameter to <asp:Parameter Name="ID" Type="Int32" /> but it gives me the error "Must declare the scaler variable of '@ID'"... I saw in this post http://forums.asp.net/p/1077738/1587043.aspx#1587043 that the answer was that "The variable you have declared in the definition of the proc is
different from the variable you are using in the WHERE clause." when they are both the same. Thanks for any help.-Brandan

I've got an issue that when I update a record in the gridview it works fine. When I click the delete link to remove the record from the database, I get the following error, "System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format". Part of the Stack Trace refers to "String oldValuesParameterFormatString". This parameter is in my SqlDataSource. It was dynamically created when I originally created the SqlDataSource with VWD 2005 Express Edition. The delete function will work if I remove "OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}" ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient", and any reference to "original_" in the DeleteCommand the SqlDataSource. But if I do, the update function doesn't work. Anyway, here's the SqlDataSource: Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

What is the easiest way to obtain number of records in SQLDataSource (using select statement)/GridView. All that I've found in forums seems to be very difficult for such trivial task... Thank you!

I've got a listbox that displays a list of employee's names. The employee number is the value stored in the listbox. I then have a vaccinations gridview that displays all the vaccinations received by the selected employee in the listbox. For some reason, when I click edit and modify a record and then click update it doesn't want to actually update the record. It just appears to do a postback and redisplay the record without any changes. My sqldatasource control is configured as follows: SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [tblVaccinations] WHERE ([EmpNum] = @EmpNum)" @empnum = mylistbox.selectedvalue the update command is as follows: UpdateCommand="UPDATE [tblVaccinations] SET [EmpNum] = @EmpNum, [VacType] = @VacType, [VacIssueDate] = @VacIssueDate, [VacExpDate] = @VacExpDate, [VacInstitution] = @VacInstitution WHERE [VaccinationNum] = @VaccinationNum"

I have this function in access I need to be able to use in ms sql. Having problems trying to get it to work. The function gets rid of the leading zeros if the field being past dosn't have any non number characters.For example:TrimZero("000000001023") > "1023"TrimZero("E1025") > "E1025"TrimZero("000000021021") > "21021"TrimZero("R5545") > "R5545"Here is the function that works in access:Public Function TrimZero(strField As Variant) As String Dim strReturn As String If IsNull(strField) = True Then strReturn = "" Else strReturn = strField Do While Left(strReturn, 1) = "0" strReturn = Mid(strReturn, 2) Loop End If TrimZero = strReturnEnd Function

I have a very big problem with a data conversion task. I have an input data source where some of the columns are optional (in terms of data). If any row does not contain a value, then it fails the data conversion task with error code -1071607681. (Could not convert due to potential data loss.) Why is the data conversion task incapable of handling empty values coming through?

Hi All,
Is it possible for someone to open a msde data file in an editor (text or hex) and modify the data, then save the file back to the filesystem?
I would think this would not be allowed but I want to confirm or see if anyone has had any experiences of someone doing something like this?
Thanks.

We are using SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition SP2. I have a fixed-length flat file import spec created in SQL Server Mgmt Studio using the Import wizard. I then created an Integration Sevices project in BIDS and added the existing SQL Server package created with the wizard to the project. When I try to edit the package with the SSIS designer, it does not appear to handle the package properly. That is, only some of the fields are selected (and when I select all the available fields, still only some show up in the detail pane of the Input Columns tab), the data types are incorrect, and the starting location (it's a fixed length file, remember) for each field (LineageID?) is incorrect. My understanding is that, with Workgroup Edition, there are only two ways, other than say programmatically from a VB program, to run the package: (1) by creating a SQL Agent job or from a BIDS project. I have seen a Cumulative Update package (#2) for SP2 that mentions some problems in BIDS' handling of SSIS pkgs, but the symptoms are in no way similar to this. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?? Thanks.

For prototyping purposes, is there a tool that reads a database's schema and generates (simple) table editor that allows manual editing of data. It would be good if the tool somehow made it easy to add foreign key values to reference data e.g. gender, status, ...I can kind of do this using Management Studios "Edit Top 200 Rows", but I was wondering if there is a more user friendly tool out there.

I use the SQL Compact Edition 3.1 as database for a desktop application. Everything works fine, but is it possible to edit the data (e.g. tables and views) in the SQL Server Management Studio? I can make a connection to the SQL CE database, but I can only edit the objects of a table. The option 'Open Table' as in SQL Server (2005) is not avalible? Does anybody know if it posible to edit the data with the Managementstudio (express)?

Hi All !I open a table in Query Analyzer by right clicking on it andselecting 'Open' and when the data is displayed in the view pane Iwould like to be able to edit it. It seems however that tables markedas read only (as shown on the top bar e.g. SQL Query Analyzer - [OpenTable ServerName.DBName.dbo.TableName(read-only)] ) can not be editedwhereas the one that do not have that attribute infront of the name Ican edit. Is there a way I can change the read only attribute of atable so that I can edit data directly in the view pane?Please let me know if there is !Thanks a heap ! :)Harkirat

This is very similar to the post: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1901076&SiteID=1
I am trying to do this. Basically, if the field I am checking contains a space - not an empty string - I want to assign it an empty string so it will get converted to NULL when it hits the SQL destination. The space character from the source is causing the rows to fail I want to force a NULLin the database as a "workaround" from something I am working on.
I thought I had this set up correctly, but it is not working. I have the field in question as an input field set to ReadWrite
If Row.[COLNAME].ToString = " " Then
Row.[COLNAME] = ""
End If
I am getting the following error:
[Assign District Code [12469]] Error: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ScriptComponentHost.HandleUserException(Exception e) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ScriptComponentHost.ProcessInput(Int32 inputID, PipelineBuffer buffer) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ManagedComponentHost.HostProcessInput(IDTSManagedComponentWrapper90 wrapper, Int32 inputID, IDTSBuffer90 pDTSBuffer, IntPtr bufferWirePacket)
I can provide more details if needed.
Thanks for your help.

I have several DTS packages that connect to various Oracle databases. An upgrade has recently been done to one of the databases from 7.3 to 8i. The other databases were always 8i. Last week, I could edit data transer tasks normally, this week, DTS hangs and I have to use task manager to kill the process. It worked fine last week. I can successfully run the packages, I just can't edit them. I have no trouble editing or running packages that connect to databases other than the one recently upgraded. I have tried both OLE DB and ODBC connections with the same results. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
