Error Inserting UserId In Codebehind Using SqlDataSource.insert()

Feb 9, 2006

I have a database with columns
userOwnLists
userID uniqueidentifier
userName nvarchar100
userList nvrachar100
createdDate

I
have created successfully a gridview controller to edit these values in
database. The Gridview data is populated by SqlDataSource.

I
have also created a EmptyDataTemplate  and created a form into it.
There is only one textBox and submit button to create the First entry
to userOwnLists -table.

Now I collect the value from EmptyDataTemplate textbox with id userList1 and create a codebehind logic for the submitbutton.

protected void Button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        TextBox listName = (TextBox)this.FindControl("listName1", GridView1.Controls);
SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userId"].DefaultValue = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey;
        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userName"].DefaultValue = Membership.GetUser().UserName.ToString();
        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["listName"].DefaultValue = listName.Text;
        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["createdDate"].DefaultValue = DateTime.Now.ToString();
        SqlDataSource1.Insert();
    }

The problem is now that I get error:
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:
Implicit conversion from data type sql_variant to uniqueidentifier is
not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.

OK.  So I Googled a bit and found this:
http://scottonwriting.net/sowblog/posts/4690.aspx

My Question is: How do I convert userId so I can insert it to database successfully?

This does not work:

String userId = Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey.ToString();
        SqlDataSource1.InsertParameters["userId"].DefaultValue = Convert.ToString(userId);

Mar 4, 2008

Hi,
I have a SQLDataSource, button, textbox, and label.  I  take the text from the textbox, count it's occurance in the database, then assign the number to the label.  The code works but I would like to provide a button that will execute/invoke the SQLDataSource.
I have this in the click event for the button:
Me.label1.Text = SqlDataSource1.Select(DataSourceSelectArguments.Empty)
How do I execute a SQLDataSource from the code-behind for the button click event?
Thanks.

Check If SqlDataSource Is Empty In CodeBehind

Feb 10, 2006

This is probably an easy one.
What is best way to determine if a SqlDataSource is empty (i.e. the query produced no results) in the CodeBehind?
I'm using this:
if (SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand.Contains(String.Empty))
{
      //Add code for scenario here.
}
It seems to work, but something just doesn't feel right about it for some reason.
Thanks

VB.NET Codebehind Code To Update SQL Server 2005 Using SQLDataSource Control?

Jul 20, 2007

Hi, I am a newbie in using ASP.NET 2.0 and ADO.NET.  I wrote a hangman game and want to record statistics at the end of each game.  I will create and update records in the database for each authenticated user as well as a record for the Anonymous, unauthenticated user.  After a win or loss has occurred, I want to programmatically use the SQLDataSource control to increment the statistics counters for the appropriate record in the database (note I don't want to show anything or get user input for this function).
I need a VB.NET codebehind example that will show me how I should set up the parameters and update the appropriate record in the database.  Below is my code.  What happens now is that the program chugs along happily (no errors), but the database record does not actually get updated.  I have done many searches on this forum and on the general Internet for programmatic examples of an update sequence of code.  If there is a tutorial for this online or a book, I'm happy to check it out.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Inserting TextBox Values To Database Using SqlDataSource.Insert Method

Oct 25, 2006

Hi, it is few days I posted here my question, but received no answer. Maybe the problem is just my problem, maybe I put my question some strange way. OK, I try to put it again, more simply. I have few textboxes, their values I need to transport to database. I set SqlDataSource, parameters... and used SqlDataSource.Insert() method. I got NULL values in the database's record. So I tried find problem by using Microsoft's sample code from address http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.sqldatasource.insert.aspx. After some changes I tried that code and everything went well, data were put into database. Next step was to separate code beside and structure of page to two separate files followed by new test. Good again, data were delivered to database. Next step: to use MasterPage, very simple, just with one ContentPlaceHolder. After this step the program stoped to deliver data to database and delivers only NULLs to new record. It is exactly the same problem which I have found in my application. The functionless code is here:http://forums.asp.net/thread/1437716.aspx I cannot find any answer this problem on forums worldwide. I cannot believe it is only my problem. I compared html code of two generated pages - with maserPage and without. There are differentions in code in ids' of input fields generated by NET.Framework:Without masterpage:<input name="NazevBox" type="text" id="NazevBox" /><span id="RequiredFieldValidator1" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a company name.</span><p><input name="CodeBox" type="text" id="CodeBox" /><span id="RequiredFieldValidator2" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a phone number.</span><p><input type="submit" name="Button1" value="Insert New Shipper" onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions(&quot;Button1&quot;, &quot;&quot;, true, &quot;&quot;, &quot;&quot;, false, false))" id="Button1" /> With masterpage:<input name="ctl00$Obsah$NazevBox" type="text" id="ctl00_Obsah_NazevBox" /><span id="ctl00_Obsah_RequiredFieldValidator1" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a company name.</span><p><input name="ctl00$Obsah$CodeBox" type="text" id="ctl00_Obsah_CodeBox" /><span id="ctl00_Obsah_RequiredFieldValidator2" style='color:Red;visibility:hidden;'>Please enter a phone number.</span><p><input type="submit" name="ctl00$Obsah$Button1" value="Insert New Shipper" onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions(&quot;ctl00$Obsah$Button1&quot;, &quot;&quot;, true, &quot;&quot;, &quot;&quot;, false, false))" id="ctl00_Obsah_Button1" />In second case ids' of input fields have different names, but I hope it is inner business of NET.Framework.There must be something I haven't noticed, maybe NET's bug, maybe my own. Thanks for any suggestion.

SqlDataSource Inserting Event Error

Apr 12, 2007

Greetings,
When using Inserting event of SqlDataSource ASP.NET gives me an error when I reference InsertParameter by Name
An SqlParameter with ParameterName 'CreatedByEmployeeId' is not contained by this SqlParameterCollection.
However, when I reference parameter by index everything works.
Is this a bug or I'm doing something wrong?
Here's the code:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="dsRole" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:SecurityConnectionString %>" DeleteCommand="spDeleteRole" InsertCommand="spAddRole" SelectCommand="spGetRole" UpdateCommand="spUpdateRole" DeleteCommandType="StoredProcedure" InsertCommandType="StoredProcedure" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure" UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure">
<DeleteParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleId" Type="Int32" />
</DeleteParameters>
<UpdateParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleId" Type="Int32" />
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleName" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleDescription" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="UpdatedByEmployeeId" Type="Int32" />
</UpdateParameters>
<InsertParameters>
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleName" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="RoleDescription" Type="String" />
<asp:Parameter Name="CreatedByEmployeeId" Type="Int32" />
</InsertParameters>
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="GridView1" Name="RoleId" PropertyName="SelectedValue" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
When using parameter name, I get an error:
Protected Sub dsRole_Inserting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceCommandEventArgs) Handles dsRole.Inserting
e.Command.Parameters("CreatedByEmployeeId").Value = Internal.Security.GetEmployeeIdFromCookie(Page.Request.Cookies)
End Sub
When using index instead of name, there's no problem:
Protected Sub dsRole_Inserting(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceCommandEventArgs) Handles dsRole.Inserting
e.Command.Parameters(2).Value = Internal.Security.GetEmployeeIdFromCookie(Page.Request.Cookies)
End Sub

Hello there,
I made a page to add these fields (name, description, price, end_date) into a SQL database. I'm using ASP.NET 2.0 with C#, my database is SQL 2005.
I did it without DetailsView or FormView, it consists of TextBoxes and a Calendar. Anyways, i wrote this code for Button1, which is the button that adds the data.
protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
SqlDataSource sql = LoginView1.FindControl("SqlDataSource1") as SqlDataSource;
sql.Insert();
Response.Redirect("home.aspx");
}
The parameters and insert statments and commands are written from the SqlDataSource Insert Query wizard. But I keep getting this error when trying to click Button1.

SELECT A Single Row With One SqlDataSource, Then INSERT One Of The Fields Into Another SqlDataSource

Jul 23, 2007

What is the C# code I use to do this?
I'm guessing it should be fairly simple, as there is only one row selected. I just need to pull out a specific field from that row and then insert that value into a different SqlDataSource.

Sqldatasource Control Inserting Problems

Oct 6, 2006

I set up a Sqldatasource control in 2.0 and I can retrieve data through a SQL Server connection from a stored procedure.  My problem is when I set up the insert command object through the wizard for the Sqldatasource control with another stored procedure for inserting data and call the insert method of my Sqldatasource object i get nothing not even an error it just goes through the code like nothing was wrong and I don't get anything inserted.  I don't know if this could be a problem but one of the parameters in the stored procedure is declared like this: @return tinyint output. I don't know how the Sqldatasource accounts for return parameters.  Here is the code for the insert for the Sqldatasource object.<asp:SqlDataSource ID="sdsMain" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:SN_CUSTOMERConnectionString %>"InsertCommand="uspSNOrder_Promo_Live" InsertCommandType="StoredProcedure" SelectCommand="uspOPFillPromo"SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure"><InsertParameters><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlPromo" Name="promoid" PropertyName="SelectedValue"Type="Int32" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="1" Name="datasourceid" Type="Int32" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="0" Name="datasourcekey" Type="String" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="9" Name="salesroomid" Type="Int32" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="9999" Name="userid" Type="Int32" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtFName" DefaultValue="" Name="firstname" PropertyName="Text"Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtLName" Name="lastname" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtAddress" Name="address" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtCity" Name="city" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtState" Name="state" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtZip" Name="zip" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtPhone" Name="phone" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="txtEmail" Name="email" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlStatus" Name="status" PropertyName="SelectedValue"Type="Int32" /><asp:Parameter DefaultValue="0" Direction="InputOutput" Name="return" Type="Byte" /></InsertParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>Thanks in advance

Inserting Variables Into A Query Using SqlDataSource

Jan 4, 2008

 Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out how to insert a
variable into a query using Visual Studio 2005 with the SqlDataSource
control. I cant seem to be able to enter a var into the query
parameters.

this is my SqlDataSource:
        <asp: SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:imLookinLikeConnectionString
%>"            DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM [tblDiaryEntries] WHERE [DiaryEntryID] = @DiaryEntryID"
SelectCommand="SELECT tblDiaryEntries.DiaryEntryID,
tblDiaryEntries.EntryDate, tblDiaryEntries.Subject,
tblDiaryEntries.DiaryEntry, aspnet_Users.UserName FROM tblDiaryEntries
INNER JOIN aspnet_Users ON tblDiaryEntries.UserID = aspnet_Users.UserId
WHERE UserName=@UserName ORDER BY tblDiaryEntries.EntryDate DESC"
UpdateCommand="UPDATE [tblDiaryEntries] SET [DiaryEntry] = @DiaryEntry,
[EntryDate] = @EntryDate, [Subject] = @Subject WHERE [DiaryEntryID] =
@DiaryEntryID" InsertCommand="INSERT INTO tblDiaryEntries(UserID,
EntryDate, Subject, DiaryEntry) VALUES (@UserId, GETDATE(), @Subject,
@DiaryEntry)">            <DeleteParameters>                <asp: Parameter Name="DiaryEntryID" Type="Int32" />            </DeleteParameters>            <UpdateParameters>                <asp: Parameter Name="DiaryEntry" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="EntryDate" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="Subject" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="DiaryEntryID" Type="Int32" />            </UpdateParameters>            <InsertParameters>                <asp: Parameter Name="DiaryEntry" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="EntryDate" Type="String" />                <asp: Parameter Name="Subject" Type="String" />                <asp: ProfileParameter DefaultValue="Anonymous" Name="UserName" PropertyName="UserName" />                <asp: Parameter Name="UserId" />            </InsertParameters>            <SelectParameters>                <asp: ProfileParameter DefaultValue="Anonymous" Name="UserName" PropertyName="UserName" />            </SelectParameters>        </asp: SqlDataSource>
What I want to do is to tell the SqlDataSource that  @UserName = this.User.Identity.Name, but I only know how to do that in
code-behind, not sure how to insert it into the code above.Any ideas?

I spesify a custom sql statement, select the "Insert" tab and insert the table I want to store into the builder. Then I select the fields and the values (parameters from tue textfields. I test it with the "Execute query" button and the results is stored in the table. (everything seems ok) I press the "OK" button but both the "Next" and "Finish" buttons are dissabled, o I can not store the query.

Can't Insert New Data To Sql Using Sqldatasource.insert, Web Forms And A Master Page

Sep 11, 2006

Hello, I'm new to the forum and new to SQL, ASP.NET, etc.  I am creating an intranet site for my company in VS 2005 and have run into a very annoying problem that I can't seem to solve.  I have tried Googling it and came up empty.  I have a database in SQL Express 2005 and my website will be accessing several tables within the database.  I can retrieve info just fine and I can update, delete, etc just fine using gridview or other prebuilt tools, but when I add a few text boxes and wire a button to the SqlDataSource.Insert() command, I get a new record that is full of null values except for the identity key I have set.  The kicker is that I am also using a master page and when I duplicate the web page without the master page link, everything works just fine.  The following snippets show what I'm doing:<InsertParameters><asp:FormParameter Name="Name" Type="String" FormField="txtName" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Location" Type="String" FormField="ddlLocation" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Issue" Type="String" FormField="txtProblem" /></InsertParameters>Of course I match the formfields to the text boxes, create an onclick event for my button, the sqldatasource is configured correctly, it just doesn't work with the master page no matter what I do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Using Membership UserId Guids With SqlParameters (Membership UserId Guid)

May 7, 2008

In my site, when a user registers, I need to create rows in additional tables besides aspnet_Users. So, I need to be able to pass the generated userId guid to subsequent SqlCommands. I'm having a terrible time with this. What's the correct way to set up a SqlParameter so that it will accept a guid? I keep getting this error: "Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier."
I've tried creating the parameter both with and without a SqlDbType.
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue(paramName, guid);
and
SqlParameter p = new SqlParameter(paramName);p.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.Guid;cmd.Parameters.Add(p);
and I get the same error either way.
Driving me nuts! Any help appreciated.

SqlDataSource.Insert()

Apr 24, 2008

Hi. I'm testing GridView and SqlDataSource controls and I'm using this http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.sqldatasource.insert.aspxI have problems with inserting new items into the db. As I understood from the code in that example, I need to create InsertParamaters and name it just like the one in the insert query. <asp:SqlDataSource ID="Sql1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"            SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Clients]" DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM [Clients] WHERE [ID] = @ID"            InsertCommand="INSERT INTO [Clients] ([Name]) VALUES (@Name)" UpdateCommand="UPDATE [Clients] SET [Name] = @Name WHERE [ID] = @ID">            <DeleteParameters>                <asp:Parameter Name="ID" Type="Int32" />            </DeleteParameters>            <InsertParameters>                <asp:ControlParameter Name="Name" ControlID="newClientTB" />            </InsertParameters>            <UpdateParameters>                <asp:Parameter Name="Name" Type="String" />                <asp:Parameter Name="ID" Type="Int32" />            </UpdateParameters>            <InsertParameters>                <asp:Parameter Name="Name" Type="String" />            </InsertParameters>        </asp:SqlDataSource> and I get the following error when run:The variable name '@Name' has already been declared. Variable names must be unique within a query batch or stored procedure. Any help?

Insert Into Two Tables Sqldatasource

Jun 30, 2006

Coming from an asp world, I am totally lost on this one.
I have two tables.
tblUsers and tblUserInfo
I have a gridview that gives me the list of users and when selected, it gives me the detailsview of the the record.  However, When I need to add a new user, I am trying to add that user into tblUsers (which happens with no problems), and then add a record, using the same user number (UserID) has the key or ID for the tblUserInfo.
So basicly, when I create a new user in tblUsers I want to create a record in tblUserInfo with the same userid.
In ASP, this takes me minutes... I have been trying to figure this out for weeks.
vs2005, sql express.
Thanks.

Hi, I have some problem with inserting data into two separate table which are connected via foreign key like in this example:Students (id_s, name, id_subject)Subjects (id_subject, name)So the point is to add a new student and subject for that chosen student. You have to make two inserts right? but how to pass the primary key to the table with foreign key? The form consists of three texbox: name, name_of_subject. Both id_s and id_subject are increment automatically. Any idea how to do it? I would be very grateful for the working code.Thanks in advance and best regards,N.

Sqldatasource Multiple Insert

Oct 8, 2007

Hi all,
I have few insertions statements in one datasource insert command, which i use for my user creation process adding new billing info shipping info and so on.
I've put this code in createuserwizard usercreated step with a try catch code. On the insertion if it doesnt work it deletes the user account.
Well lets say the first insertion went trough with out any problems, but the second one got blocked or didnt work length or any wierd on controled issue.
I was thinking of putting begin transaction end transaction statements in front and end of the statements but this can prevent the insert not to return error, which will prevent try catch to fire?
Basicly the idea is to do all insertions with the user creation, and if one goes down all the others gets reversed. (if possible single sqldatasource, just to make the code look clean)

And in the code i just called: SqlDataSource1.Insert(); Then the page gives me the exception like:
