Error Message From RETURN ALL ROWS

Jul 30, 1999

I am new to SQL Server 7 and get the following error message when I go into the Enterprise Manager, select a specific table, right mouse click, open table, return all rows:

"An unexpected error happened during this operation.

[MS Design Tools] - Query designer encountered a MS Design Tools error: Not Implemented"

Can anyone explain what is causing this error?? I can go into SQL Query Analyzer and do a SELECT against any table and bring back data, but not as stated above.

How Do I Return An Error Message If Certain Parameters Are Not Met?

May 14, 2008

I hope I'm posting this question in the proper forum, please pardon me if I am not. Here's my situation. I have an application written in VB.Net connecting to a SQL 2005 database. I have a stored procedure that is looking for duplicate entries of a "Company Name" prior to running the stored procedure. If there is no duplicate Company Name want the stored procedure to run, if there is a duplicate I want to return an error message alerting the user to the fact that the Company Name they are attempting to add already exists. I have my if statement but I'm not sure how to return an error message within this context. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many Thanks-

IF(SELECT COUNT(CompanyDimID) FROM dbo.CompanyDim WHERE CompanyName = @CompanyDim) = 0

BEGIN

.......................SQL query here................................

ELSE
(I want to return an error message in the ELSE portion to call out that we have a duplicate Company Name)

But if I run seperately the querys written in SP then it returns all the rows. Please give me solution why it is happening like this.

There are indexes in the tables.

Once I shrink the database and rebuild the indexes, from then this problem is happening. I have rebuild the indexes several time, also updated the statistics but nothing improving.

Return Only One Message From Stored Procedure...

May 7, 2008

I have a stored procedure which checks to see if a user's email address exists before it inserts a new record. If it does it should return a message that notifies the user they are already subscribed. If they are not a different message should be returned stating that a new subscription has been created. This procedure works and is shown below.

The problem I am having is with the first SELECT statement. How can I get the procedure to show just one message and not the results from the first SELECT statement too?

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_InsertSubscription
@SubscriberFirstName VARCHAR(50),
@SubscriberLastName VARCHAR(50),
@SubscriberEmailAddress VARCHAR(50),
@SubscriberZipCode INT,
@IsActive BIT,
@SubscriberOptIn BIT,
@AdditionalOffersOptIn BIT,
@Msg VARCHAR(50) OUTPUT

AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;

-- Check to see if email address exists first
SELECT @@ROWCOUNT FROM Subscriber WHERE SubscriberEmailAddress = @SubscriberEmailAddress

IF @@ROWCOUNT > 0
BEGIN
SET @Msg = 'This email address is already subscribed'
SELECT @Msg AS 'User'
RETURN
END

-- Insert statements for procedure here
INSERT INTO Subscriber (SubscriberFirstName,
SubscriberLastName,
SubscriberEmailAddress,
SubscriberZipCode,
IsActive,
SubscriberOptIn,
AdditionalOffersOptIn,
SubscriberSignUpDate)

VALUES (@SubscriberFirstName,
@SubscriberLastName,
@SubscriberEmailAddress,
@SubscriberZipCode,
@IsActive,
@SubscriberOptIn,
@AdditionalOffersOptIn,
GETDATE())

IF @@ROWCOUNT > 0
BEGIN
SET @Msg = 'New user subscription created'
END

SELECT @Msg AS 'User'
END
GO

If the user's email address does not exist I get

(No column name)

User
New user subscription created

If the user's email address does exist I get

(No column name)
0

User
This email address is already subscribed

I would like for the (No column name) to go away - I know this is coming from the first SELECT statement. How do I suppress that statement from being output, yet still get the @@ROWCOUNT variable set?

I want to act on the "(0 row(s) affected)" message. Is there a way to do that or do I have to query the database before I do the update?

Error below was returned from an agent job:

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server returned message "Query timeout expired". [SQLSTATE 01000]

A linked Server was set up against a remote database to backup a database and it runs perfectly well when executed directly against the remote server but returns the above error when set up through Sql Server Agent. Permissions are good as the step returns success. I reset the query timeout property to zero but error persist. What else should I be looking at to make this work?

Return Error Code (return Value) From A Stored Procedure Using A Sql Task

Feb 12, 2008

I have a package that I have been attempting to return a error code after the stored procedure executes, otherwise the package works great.

I call the stored procedure from a Execute SQL Task (execute Marketing_extract_history_load_test ?, ? OUTPUT)
The sql task rowset is set to NONE. It is a OLEB connection.

I have two parameters mapped:

tablename input varchar 0 (this variable is set earlier in a foreach loop) ADO.
returnvalue output long 1

I set the breakpoint and see the values change, but I have a OnFailure conditon set if it returns a failure. The failure is ignored and the package completes. No quite what I wanted.

The first part of the sp is below and I set the value @i and return.

CREATE procedure [dbo].[Marketing_extract_history_load_TEST]

@table_name varchar(200),

@i int output

as

Why is it not capturing and setting the error and execute my OnFailure code? I have tried setting one of my parameter mappings to returnvalue with no success.

Inserting 1 Row And Getting A Message That Two Rows Were Inserted.

Oct 5, 2007

Why does this code tell me that I inserted 2 rows when I really only inserted one? I am using SQL server 2005 Express. I can open up the table and there is only one record in it. Dim InsertSQL As String = "INSERT INTO dbCG_Disposition ( BouleID, UserName, CG_PFLocation ) VALUES ( @BouleID, @UserName, @CG_PFLocation )"Dim Status As Label = lblStatus
Dim ConnectionString As String = WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("HTALNBulk").ConnectionString

Dim con As New SqlConnection(ConnectionString)
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(InsertSQL, con)

cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("BouleID", BouleID)
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("UserName", UserID)
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("CG_PFLocation", CG_PFLocation)

Dim added As Integer = 0
Try
con.Open()
added = cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
Status.Text &= added.ToString() & " records inserted into CG Process Flow Inventory, Located in Boule_Storage."
Catch ex As Exception
Status.Text &= "Error adding to inventory. "
Status.Text &= ex.Message.ToString()
Finally
con.Close()
End Try Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

[XML Task] Error: An Error Occurred With The Following Error Message: There Are Multiple Root Elements.

Aug 18, 2006

I'm trying to use an XML Task to do a simple XSLT operation, but it fails with this error message:

[XML Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "There are multiple root elements. Line 5, position 2.".

The source XML file validates fine and I've successfully used it as the XML Source in a data flow task to load some SQL Server tables. It has very few line breaks, so the first 5 lines are pretty long: almost 4000 characters, including 34 start-tags, 19 end-tags, and 2 empty element tags. Here's the very beginning of it:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<ESDU releaselevel="2006-02" createdate="26 May 2006"><package id="1" title="_standard" shorttitle="_standard" filename="pk_stan" supplementdate="01/05/2005" supplementlevel="1">
<![CDATA[This package contains the standard ESDU Series.]]>

There is only 1 ESDU root element and only 1 package element.

Of course, the XSLT stylesheet is also an XML document in its own right. I specify it directly in the XML Task:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"/>

<xsl:template name="identity" match="@*|node()">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="kw">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:apply-templates select="@*"/>
<xsl:attribute name="ihs_cats_seq" select="position()"/>
<xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>

</xsl:stylesheet>

Its 5th line is the first xsl:template element.

What is going on here? I do not see multiple root elements in either the XML document or the XSLT stylesheet.

Thanks!

How To Return A Specified # Of Rows

Oct 29, 1999

Trying to do a paging scheme without using #Temp tables in MS SQL 7.0

Client calls a sp passing 1 and sql returns the first 100 records.
Client sends a sp passing 100 and gets the next 100 records.

Process continues till @@fetch_status <> 0 or the client can stop sending requests.

I implemented it easily using fetch absolute into a #temp table but this has dissaster potential in a multiuser environment since everyone will be using this query continously and there is no user limit.

What other options do I have?

Thanks,

John

What Is Better? Return All Rows Or Nested TOP X?

Feb 24, 2006

I have a database that has 100,000+ records in a table. Am I better off returning all of the records from a search even if it is 50,000 records or is it better to do a SELECT COUNT(*) And nested SELECT TOP x statements to only return 1 page of results? What is the best practice for a situation like this?
SELECT * FROM myTable LEFT OUTER JOIN ... LEFT OUTER JOIN......WHERE something=@something AND another.... AND...
OR
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM myTable LEFT OUTER JOIN ... LEFT OUTER JOIN......WHERE something=@something AND another... AND... ORDER BY @OrderAnd
SELECT TOP(@pagesize) FROM (SELECT TOP(@pagesize * @pagenum) FROM myTable LEFT OUTER JOIN ... LEFT OUTER JOIN......WHERE something=@something AND another... AND... ORDER BY @Order)ORDER BY @revOrder

How Many Rows Will A Query Return?

Apr 8, 2006

Does sql server have a mechanism (aside from count()) that for any given SELECT query will tell you only how many rows it will return without actually returning the data?

The reason for this is that we have a generic lookup form in an application that is used on almost every screen (we have a lot of screens, so it gets a lot of different, sometimes complicted, queries passed to it to use for the lookup, and having to manually edit the query to use count over all the select clauses doesn't seem like the best way to handle this. If we could do a kind of 'trial run' against the server just to get the number of rows and use that to help set up the form, that would be ideal.

Return Certain Number Of Rows

Apr 17, 2008

I have a Dataset that I am populating from a SQL Query. I am then using the dataset to populate a report in Reporting Services. What I want to do is return a standard number of rows in my dataset. (Let's say 10.) Even if my query does not have any rows in it, I want 10 empty rows returned to the dataset. If my query has 7 rows in it then I want to add on 3 empty rows and return it. I will not have more than the standard number of rows.
I cannot get the table in the report to show up if the dataset is empty, but still want the table to display with 10 empty rows. I have searched how to do this online but am getting nowhere. (I know how to add one empty row but not a set number.
