Error Msg: Login Failed For A User . For VS 2005 Websites With SQL Server 2005
May 30, 2008
Just installed SQL Server 2005 and tested my old VS 2005 ASPnet websites, which were connected to
SQL Server 2000 databases before. All my websites were created for local HTTP applications, coded with a
connection string with User ID and Password. The SQL Server 2000 was configured as mixed authentication
(i.e. with User ID and Password). These websites worked very well with SQL Server 2000 database server.
Testing my old VS 2005 websites with SQL Server 2005 database, showed a 'Login failed for a User ''.' error msg
although the 'Test Connection' on VS 2005 design showed a perfect query for e.g. a GridView control. I have
assured that the UserID/Password were correct for Management Studio Security object's
login and Database Security's user. The server instance was configured with mixed authentication mode.
One thing I am not sure of is, when clicking the Management Studio icon, a Connection dialog showed up, asking for
a Windows or MIxed authentication? I just stayed with the Windows authentication. What does the authentication
mode have anything to do with the VS 2005 website connection? Should I change to mixed authetnication mode?
TIA,
Jeffrey

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.
why ?

I have not been able to install SQL Express SP2 (standard or advanced) on Vista Ultimate (RTM). Every time I try to install, I get the following error message:
SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'sa'. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information.
When I check the logs, the only information I can find that is at all useful is:
Doing Action: Do_sqlScript

Has anyone else run into this issue and resolved it? I have seen posts for earlier versions of SQL Express that said to run the configuration manager and change the account types to Local System rather than Network Service, but I don't have the configuration manager installed. If I set the accounts to use Local System by changing the login info during setup, I get the same error.
Thanks,
Mark

I have lots of problems with the connection. I've connected many dropdownlists to the database and i didn't have problems at all. I also try an example of an ASP.NET book:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"
ConnectionString= "<%$ ConnectionStrings:CIPPEC%>"
InsertCommand=
"INSERT INTO
[member] ([first_name], [last_name], [malefemale], [yearborn])
VALUES
(@first_name, @last_name, @malefemale, @yearborn)">
<InsertParameters>
<asp:FormParameter Name="first_name" Type="String"
FormField="FirstTextBox" />
<asp:FormParameter Name="last_name" Type="String"
FormField="LastTextbox"/>
<asp:FormParameter Name="malefemale" Type="Int32"
FormField="MFRadioButton" />
<asp:FormParameter Name="yearborn" Type="Int32"
FormField="YearDropDown" />
</InsertParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
And it worked well. But when i try to connect my page with:
Dim connect As New Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection( _
"Server=glgrand-arSQLEXPRESS;UID="WindowsStartupUser";password="WindowsStartupPass"; database=CIPPEC")
connect.Open()
Dim cmd As New Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand( _
"INSERT PRUEBA (PersonaJuridica, NombreRazonSocial, Nombre, Segundo_nombre, Apellido) " & _
"VALUES (txtPerJur, txtRazSoc, txtName, txtSecondName, txtApellido)", _
connect)
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
connect.Close()
The error message says: Login failed for user 'username'.
I tried lots of things but it didn't work:
In SQL Configuration Manager:
Client Protocols: TCP/IP and Named Pipes are enabled.
In SQL 2005 Services: Server Properties: Built-in Account: Local System
SQL Server Surface Area Configuration: Remote connections: Using both TCP/IP and Name Pipes connection is selected.
In SQL Management Studio i created a new login glgrand-ar/UserStartupName , with sysadmin server role and user mapping my CIPPEC database.
I don't know what else i could try, i tried it at home and at work and i couldn't connect to my database and make an INSERT. It stops at Connect.Open() with the error that i wrote in this subject message.
It's evident that i'm doing something wrong (because i'm new): Could you please help me with a solution and explain me what are the data that i have to put on the Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection ?? I'm using the Windows authentication: i'm putting my username and password and it doesn't worked.
Thank you!!

Has anyone else received a "login failed for user..." exception when connecting to an sql 2005 db from ado.net on an inconsistent basis? ...as in your connection can be opened sometimes, and sometimes you get that error - with the same connection string being used (same user and password)?

Many a times see the below error in SQL Error log.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: ]
Is this something to do here?
Note: If I run the below statement I know that the SQL Error log entry will go off, but wanted to know the real significance of this error?

Hi all,I am trying to setup a VB.Net development environment on my desktop for one of the application which was already in the production for couple of years (some unknown contractor(s) developed and maintained it so far). The application works fine on the web.Visual Studio 2005, .Net 2.0, SQL 2000, SQL Server 2005 were installed on my desktop. When I try to build the entire application/solution in the debug mode (i.e., with http://localhost/), build succeeds and I could get to the login.aspx. When I try to login, I am getting an error in the Visual Studio at the following code;connection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
connection.Open()
saying "Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed", "System.Transactions.TransactionManagerCommunicationException was unhandled by user code". And the web browser displays the following error "Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component". When I try to connect the SQL Server 2005 with the same ConnectionString attributes by going to Tools>Connect to Database, it works fine. But, through application connection.Open() giving above errors. I have set the MSDTC properties (i.e., under Component Services>MyComputer Properties>Security Configuration) as below:-Enabled Network DTC Access, Allow Remote Clients, Allow Remote Administration, Allow Inbound, Allow Outbound, No Authentication required - selected, Enabled XA Transactions...& DTC Logon Account is "NT AUTHORITYNetworkService".Please help.Thanks in advance,Chandra

All the research I found dealing with this problem is that the solution is to set SQLserver to mix mode. I have SQL server already set to mix mode. I am not sure what else to do. Has anybody run into this problem?

I received the above error yesterday and haven't been able to trace it to any job or process running. We haven't implemented any changes to the server in the past few months, and it doesn't look to be a user-established connection, since the Client IP Address of the SSPI handshake error is from the server itself.
I logged this set of messages in SQL AgentServer error log:

Login Failed for user , the user is not associated with a trusted sql server connection. (microsoft SQL Server,Error:18452)
hi ,
i am getting the above error message once in a while maybe two or 3 times a week , and then it goes away in 10 to 15 minutes or 5 minutes ,
our mode is set to mixed and we are able to connect and use both sql and windows , but once in a while , it will give us the above message when we try connecting throught sql server management studio client (using sql 05) using windows login , although it lets us connect using sql login while the windows login is denied, and after a while it lets us connect with both.
occurs randomly on some days , we run our servers on VM ware virtual machines using windows 2003 r2 enterprise 64 bit with sp2 with esx 301 virtual machine.
would appericate any feedback on this thanks

Hi
Last week I was receiving an error when trying to connect to two of our seven sql servers from my laptop via my domain admin account. The only fix was to have my laptop rebuilt and everything re-installed.
Today however another administrator is starting to have the same problem but to only one of the seven servers!
When that administrator uses my laptop with her domain admin account it works!?
What could possibly be going wrong with our laptops? We have not installed or changed anything.
The full error message we see:
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. (Microsoft Sql Server, Error: 18452)
The error being logged on the server: (two errors are logged each time)
SSPI handshake failed with error code 0x8009030c while establishing a connection with integrated security; the connection has been closed. [CLIENT: 53.35.165.148]
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. [CLIENT: 53.35.165.148]

Hi all,
Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors.
First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.
My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "mydatabasename" requested by the login. The login failed.
/index.asp, line 10 which is dbConnect.Open cstring
from this peice of code:
sub dbOpen()
set dbConnect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cstring = "DSN=mysqldsn; Trusted Connection=yes"
dbConnect.Open cstring
end sub
I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)
I also notice under mywebsite home panel there is a connection string option. Do I do anything with that?
Definatley a lot more to it than XP's II6!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Microsoft: this affects development that will eventually sell a lot of seats on SharePoint Server 2007. If you guys and gals can't straighten out this mess, you can't expect custom solutions with custom web parts. So pay attention for your own good. Yes, SPS 2007 is what this is all about. I've created simpe web parts and deployed them, same VS 2005, but I need local development and debugging for more complex stuff. I'm really disappointed that you have no solution for this problem.
I've seen other posts on this, but the result seems to be the same: if you fix it, it's by accident, not by design.
1. I created a blank ASP.NET web site
2. I added a web part manager
3. I added a web part zone
I get the error described above. I have no idea why SQL Server settings are so screwed up.
I've tried all the stuff in the other posts - security settings, command line installation, etc. None of those worked.
The default template(s) don't copy anything into App_Data, nor create an empty folder. I don't know why that is. I have other web sites working just fine, but they use remote SQL databases, or local ones I created, and didn't need profile management (no forms authentication, no web parts, no web zones).
I've also started out with a local database, using SQL Authentication, later moving it to a remote server, and never had any problems. The SQL Server developer edition and Express seem to work just fine. I can also debug stored procs when the .mdf is in App_Data. So the problem isn't one of connectivity.
What would cause the default screw-up? This would seem to point from all directions to a problem with Visual Studio (2005)? The installation is defalt - perhaps some extras included (copy local), but nothing unusual. AJAX for ASP.net is installed, but not used in the above "default web site" trial. Likewise Syncfusion's tools, which work fine on other developer workstations at this same location, all of which are from the same image (purchased at the same time & imaged). That web parts work on other boxes, running all the same management tools (anti-virus, remote sys admin/sms etc.) makes none of those suspect.
I think Microsoft needs to have a clean problem solution and publish it. SP1 certainly doesn't fix it. What's worse is the stupid, lame error message. "I can't open the default database". Well, what did you try? What do you think the default is? What settings are you using? Why is there no debugging information other than the usual worthless trace information showing it's all deep within the ProviderBase and SqlClient namespace code? How is that supposed to be helpful?
If anyone has anything solid, not guesses, I'd like to know.

Hi,
I am trying to create a linked server between 2 SQL Server 2005 boxes.
When I create the linked server I specify a login for the connection.
The strange part is that I get the following error when it goes to test the connection:
The test connection to the linked server failed
Login failed for user 'Domainuser'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)
I can use the SQL mangement studio to conenct to the database using this same login.
The login has all the server roles assigned to it also.
Can anyone shed some light as to what may be the problem?
Thanks,

hi,
so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?

I've got a weird issue on my hands. I've got a 2 node/instance SQL 2005 SP2 Enterprise cluster on Server 2003 Enterprise, that's getting an odd event log error over and over. The service account that runs everything (SQL Services, Agent, Analysis Svcs, etc...) is a domain admin. The account is not locked out. SQL Server seems to be running fine. But, if you look in the SQL Server logs or the application logs, all you see are thousands of errors just like this:
Type: Failure Audit
Source: MSSQLSERVER
Event ID: 18456
Login failed for user 'domainServiceAccount'. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]
(BTW - the ip addr in the error is of that virtual instance of SQL Server.)
On the Server Evt log, it only shows up in the App log. In the security log, all of the audits related to this service acct are successes.
It happens on both instances of the 2005 cluster. But my SQL 2000 cluster (which uses the same service account) is having no problems at all. I've tried everything I could think of to diagnose/fix the issue and just can't seem to figure it out.
- verify that BUILTINAdministrators is an SA in SQL
- verify that NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM is an SA in SQL
- verify that the service account is an admin on both physical boxes.
- verify that there are no 'deny' permissions set on any of the system databases for the service account (or the two above built in groups).
Any ideas? I can't find anything on the web about it that's helped so far. Basically everything seems to be negated by the fact that the account is NOT locked out and the fact that the account is a domain admin. Luckily it's not causing any problems for me (at the moment), but I'm trying to diagnose a different issue and I can't seem to shake the possibility that both of the issues are related.

Hi
I have installed sql server on my standalone PC.
I used "window and sql mix authentication" for the sql server in the enterprise manager set up.
when I try to use the sql server login name for the startup service account, I have this error. "No Mapping between names and security IDs ".
So Even though I use mix authentication, I am still using window login name.
Then I create the DSN file.
But when I run the ASP program, I have this error "login fail for user-("user name that I used for dsn file configuration").
I try to configure the dsn file set up with both authentications, windows and sql login names.
But I got the error again.
I am really lost here.
Please help me. thanks...

Hi
I have IIS Web server and SQL database server on my PC.
When I run my ASP page, sometimes I got the error....
Error Type:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80040E4D)
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'MYPCIUSR_MYNAME'.
What puzzled me is that I don't get this error all the time. For the same program, and same configuration, sometimes it turned out okay but sometimes I got this error.
I used mix authentication for SQL database.
Please help me with this...(I am very new to sql database)
