Error Number For Duplicate Column Value During An Insert For A Unique Column ?
Jul 27, 2007
I have a table in which a non-primary key column has a unique index on it.
If I am inserting a record into this table with a duplicate column value for the indexed column, then what will be the error number of the error in above scenario? OR How could I find this out?

I guess there is first for everything...I had never seen error like this before
Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_table1'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'table1'. The statement has been terminated.
In this case Primary Key is Identity column. I do not include Idenity column in Insert statement.
Incidently SQL server machines had cluster failure couple of days before. I am not sure whether it has anything to do with it.
I see this error randomly.
How should I debug it

Is there a way to avoid entering column names in the excel template for me to create an excel file froma dynamic excel using openrowset.
I have teh following code but it works fien when column names are given ahead of time.
If I remove the column names from the template and just to Select * from the table and Select * from sheet1 then it tells me that column names donot match.
Server: Msg 213, Level 16, State 5, Line 1Insert Error: Column name or number of supplied values does not match table definition.
here is my code...

I have an issue where I am getting an error on an unique index.
I know why I am getting the error but not sure how to get around it.
The query does a check on whether a unique value exists in the Insert/Select. If I run it one record at a time (SELECT TOP 1...) it works fine and just won't update it if the record exists.
But if I do it in a batch, I get the error. I assume this is because it does the checking on the file before records are written out and then writes out the records one at a time from a temporary table.
It thinks all the records are unique because it compares the records one at a time to the original table (where there would be no duplicates). But it doesn't check the records against each other. Then when it actually writes out the record, the duplicate is there.
How do I do a batch where the Insert/Select would write out the records without the duplicates as it does when I do it one record at a time.
CREATE TABLE #TestTable
(
Name varchar(50),
Email varchar (40)
)
Insert #TestTable (Name,Email) Values('Tom', 'tom@aol.com')

Hello,
This probably has been addressed before but I was unable to get the search to work properly on this site.
I am needing a script/way of deleting all rows from a DB with the exception of one record left for each row that has duplicate column data. Example :
Row 1
Field1 = 12345 Field2 =xxxxx Field 3=yyyyy Field4=zzzzz etc.
Row 2
Field1 = 12345 Field2 =zzzzzz Field 3=xxxxxx Field4=yyyyyy etc.
Row3
Field1 = 12345 Field2 =20202 Field 3=11111 Field4=zzzzz etc.
Row 4
Field1 = 54321 Field2 =xxxxx Field 3=yyyyy Field4=zzzzz etc.
Etc. Etc.
I want to be able to find the duplicates for Field1 and then delete all but 1 of those rows.( I don't care which one I keep just so only one is left.) The data in the other fields may or may not be unique.
I know how to find the duplicates it's just the deleting part I am having problems with. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks,
Kerry

I am having issues trying to write a query that would provide me the unique GUID numbers associated with a distinct PID if the unique GUID's > 1. Â To summarize, I need a query that just shows which PID's have more than one unique GUID. A PID could have multiple GUID's that are the same, I'm looking for the PID's that have multiple GUID's that are different/unique.Â
Table1
GUID PID
GUID1 PID1
GUID1 PID1
GUID1 PID1
GUID2 PID1
GUID3 PID2
GUID3 PID2
GUID3 PID2
The result of the query would only have PID1 because it has two unique GUID's. PID2 would not be listed has it has the same GUID3 in each row.
Result:
PID1Â

Hello everyone, I am new to ERWIN and I need helps from the experts outthere.We are using ERWin 4.1.2771 and have reversed engineered some MS SQLServer 2000 databases.The problem we are having is that we have a FK on a column to a tablewhere the PK of the referencing table is on another column (such as anidentity column). We have a unique index on the column in the PK tableand SQL Server allows you to build a FK reference even though thecolumn is not defined as the PK.Does anyone know how to create this type of FK within Erwin?Thank You

I have 1 client who keeps running into the following error on the subscriber and merge agents >
€œCannot insert duplicate key row in object 'MSmerge_genhistory' with unique index 'unc1MSmerge_genhistory'.€?
Last time we got this error I ran a reindex on table MSmerge_genhistory on the publisher database, I then successfully generated a new snapshot and the subscribers started to synchronize again. This time around I keep getting the error even after I follow these steps (I also ran all the jobs to clean up replication). The last time I ran into this error I created a job to reindex msmerge_genhistory on a nightly bases in an effort to avoid this problem. Can somebody please provide me with a workaround and also the reason why this error occurs in the first place.
Thank you in advanced,

Hi.
I have been recently redesigning my tables - creating FK
relationships from child tables to the PK userid in the Users table.
The specifics of what I did and why can be seen here:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1968856&SiteID=1
But, now I am getting the below error:
Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'dbo.lastlogin' with unique index 'IX_lastlogin'.
The statement has been terminated.
Or, for that matter, SavedSearches or any other table where I need to
insert the same userid twice. I can see why I would want to avoid duplicates in the Users table. But, for lastlogin, savedsearches, and
a few of my other tables, the same user may account for multiple rows.
Any suggestions as to where I messed up and how to deal with this?
Thanks.

We are developing a project that is expected to hold TB of data and the back end used is SQL Server 2005.
I have the following problem
I have applied Nonclustered index over a column on a table.
Designed a SP for insertion which caters for updation incase the criteria based on the input is met.
The logic goes like this
Incase there exists a row containing the value of the column that is indexed for uniqueness, there should be updation. If not there should be a new row created.
However often there is an error message that is placed above. This happens only on some of the SPs and only on rare occasions.
Can any body tell me if there is any problem with the SQL Server 2005
Thanks in advance

Hi, I was wondering how I can complete a column (which doesnt have an input one) with data.
For example:
I have a sql query which bring data of 3 columns
ID | FISRT NAME | LAST NAME
1 MIKE MORGAN
2 SARA JOHANES
So, I will insert that data in a FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, which I configured with 3 columns and I did the corresponding mapping in the FLAT FILE DESTINTATION.
Now, If I add one more column in the FLAT FILE CONNECTION MANAGER, I will not have it mapped to a input one, obviously. So, what I need is to add one more column to the flat file destination and complete it with zeros values in it.
Probably I can solve this part by introducing a DERIVED COLUMN and there I can configure the zeros that I want to add to the column. But I'm not sure if I can do that without having a input column.
So, the question will be, how can I add one column to a flat file which doesnt have a input and introduce any value that I want to it?
Hope I was clear
Thanks for your help.

The new column is NewMiniPartsCL. The table above shows the values that the new column (NewMiniPartsCL) should contain.
For Example
Anytime you have "1" in the PartsNum column of the Parts Table and the MiniPartsCL column of the MiniParts Table has a "K" , the NewMiniPartsCL column in the MiniParts Table should be populated with "DK" ( as shown in the table above).

I have been battling this for 2 days! I could write a book on what does not work. I have even tried entering the data manually through the 'Open Table' SSMS function from the Object Explorer. I only have 5 records in the table. The first 4 I added a week or so ago during dev from the ASP.Net 2.0 (w VB) website that is the front end for this DB. I use a DAL between the site and DB.I added two new fields the other day and everything seemed to work fine. Now I get 'Siteid CANNOT BE NULL'. I abandoned attempts to Insert from the Website. The following was done directly through SSMS.I switched all of the columns (except PK) to allow nulls. I could add/update a record, no problem, even with directly typed data in some fields. Hello All,
I'm having a problem doing a bulk insert on a tab delimited text file into mssql 2005 using either bulk insert or bcp.
When using the following bulk insert command I get the "The column is too long in the data file for row 1, column 2" error.
I have tried
Code Snippet
BULK
INSERT
test.dbo.customerdefinition
FROM
'data_file.txt'
WITH
(
FORMATFILE = 'format_file.txt',
FIELDTERMINATOR = ' ',
ROWTERMINATOR = 'n',
KEEPIDENTITY
)
The data file only has data for the first 10 columns of a table with over 100 columns.
First 10 table columns have the format of
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[CustomerDefinition](
[Rowid] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT FOR REPLICATION NOT NULL,
[CustomerId] [varchar](15) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[Name] [varchar](50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[Addr1] [varchar](50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[Addr2] [varchar](50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[Addr3] [varchar](50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[City] [varchar](30) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[State] [varchar](50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[Zipcode] [varchar](10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL,
[Country] [varchar](50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL
CONSTRAINT [PK_CustomerDefinition] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
The data-file looks like this (it is tab delimited):
1 1 BEN ONE BENVENUTO 1 BENVENUTO ST. CLAIR & AVENUE ROAD TORONTO ON
2 1 BIGGIN DDP PARTNERSHIP 1 BIGGIN LTD. 1 BIGGIN COURT NORTH YORK ON
3 1 EVA MELIA CORPORATION 1 EVA ROAD SUITE #412 ETOBICOKE ON

10 100 GOWAN KANCO - 100 GOWAN LTD. 100 GOWAN AVENUE PAPE & DANFORTH EAST YORK ON
The format-file looks like this:

1 SQLINT 0 4 " " 1 Rowid ""
2 SQLCHAR 2 15 " " 2 CustomerId SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
3 SQLCHAR 2 50 " " 3 Name SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS

10 SQLCHAR 2 50 " " 10 Country SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
I can't for the life of me understand what I'm doing wrong but if someone can help me out here it would be greatly appreciated.

My team at work has spent the past week troubleshooting performance issues experienced by users of our asp.net 2.x web application. We've got a probe running on one of the web servers that has identified a frequently occuring error that no one has seen before and I can't find anywhere online. MSSQL error "system.data.oledb.oledbcommand.executenonquery(Maximum number of unique SQL exceeded) Has anyone here ever seen this error before?The web server, application, SQL servers and databases all seem to be configured properly, but users are experiencing latency and this frequently occurring error is a mystery to us.
