Error Of Max Length Of String Using Sql DTC To Import DATA
Mar 8, 2004
Hi,
I am trying to use DTC to import about 500 records from an Excelsheet to an SQL database.
Some fields contain strings with a length of about 1700 characters.
When i'm trying to execute the DTC generated code it is giving an error and saying that the maximum string length of 255 has been reached. Althoug the column in the database is defined as nchar(1750).
Does anybody know an answer to this problem ?
Thanks in advance,
Goofy

I am trying to import data from an excel Sheet to SQL Database using OPENROWSET. After import I found that all the cells containing data of more than 2000 length got truncated to  255 characters only. I tried finding the solution and found that We need to have the data with length more than 255 in first 8 rows of Excel sheet. It worked for me also. But In real scenario the data that I cant do the manual work on excel. I tried out with Dot Net utility and SSIS package also but the truncation is still the issue.
INSERT into tmp_Test
SELECT
*
FROM
OPENROWSET('Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0','Excel
12.0;Database=D:Book1.xlsx', [Sheet1$])

I have a sp which works fine from my local database.
I move the procedure to a different database and modify it to access my data via linked server and I get the following:
provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Production" returned message "String data, length mismatch".
Msg 7421, Level 16, State 2, Line 27
Cannot fetch the rowset from OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Production". .
Now I've seen references to this error message for ODBC, but as I said above, the same SP works fine if it goes against local data views. I am working with rather long concatenated strings using nvarchar(max) as the data type.
I've tried cast() on just about everything to no avail.
Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks!

I'm running into this error message when passing in a few records in particular to a function, the only difference I could find is that these recods have about 60k characters on the field that I'm passing to a function.
is there a max lenght for passing to a function?
select function ( field) as results
It's been working fine until today and all of the related fields are declared as nvarchar(max)
Thank you.

Hello,
i want to import data from an excel sheet into a database. While reading from the excel sheet OleDb automatically guesses the Datatype of each column. My Problem is the first A Column which contains ~240 Lines. 210 Lines are Numbers, the latter 30 do contain strings. When i use this code:
Code BlockDim sConn As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & conf_path_current & file_to_import & ";Extended Properties=""Excel 8.0;HDR=NO"""
Dim oConn As New OleDb.OleDbConnection(sConn)
Dim cmd1 As New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand("Select * From [Table$]", oConn)
Dim rdr As OleDb.OleDbDataReader = cmd1.ExecuteReader
Do While rdr.Read()
Console.WriteLine(rdr.Item(0)) 'or rdr(0).ToString
Next
it will continue to read the stuff till the String-Lines are coming.
when using Item(0), it just crashes for trying to convert a DBNull to a String, when using rdr(0).ToString() it just gives me no value.
So my question is how to tell OleDB that i want that column to be completly read as String/Varchar?
Thanks for Reading

For those of you who would like to reference my exact issue, I'm dealing with the RSExecution SSIS package at the "Update Parameters" data flow task, at the Script Component.
The script tries to split parameter data into name and value. Unfortunately, I have several reports that are passing parameters that are very large. One example has over 65,000 characters all in the normal "¶mname=value&parm2=value..." format.
The code in the script works fine until it gets to one of these very large parameter sets. I have figured out what is causing the issue. Here's some code:
Dim paramBlob as Byte()
paramBlob = Row.BlobColumn.GetBlobData(0, Row.BlobColumn.Length)
The second parameter of the .GetBlobData function takes an INTEGER as its count! Therefore, no matter what kind of datatype I pass to the string that the script will later split, it will be limited to 32767 characters.
THIS IS A PROBLEM!!!
Does anyone know a workaround for this issue? I need all of the parameter data to be reported, and I would hate to have to skip over rows like this. Also, if I'm missing something, please fill me in!
Thanks for your help in advance,
LOSTlover

Will be getting new file for download from vendor to process in future. When I use DTS or Import wizard in sql server I get "could not find the selected row delimiter within the first 8kb of data, is the selected delimited valid? This is for a fixed length file. If I answer yes and continue everything is fine, until I get to the end of the record which it can't find. It basically lumps the records together. What is interesting, that if I import the same file in Access 2000, I don't get this problem. ANyone seen this before? Could not find anything on MSDN

I have a requirement to import a file of rows containing fixed length data. The problem is that each row can be one of 5 different formats (i.e. different columns) -- where the "type" of row is indicated by the first two characters of the row. Each row gets inserted into its own table.
Could I use a simple Conditional Split to route the rows? Or is the split for routing similiar rows? Anyways, problems are never this simple...
In addition, each "grouping" of rows is related. The "first" row is considered the "primary" row (and gets a row id via IDENTITY, whereas the remaining rows in the group are "secondary" rows and have foreign key references back the the primary rows id.
Given (using spaces to separate columns and CrLf to show "grouping"):
01 MSFT blah blah
02 blahblah blahblahblah
03 boring boringblah
01 AAPL blah blah
02 blahblah blahblahblah
03 boring boringblah
01 CSCO blah blah
02 blahblah blahblahblah
02 blahblah blahblahblah
03 boring boringblah
So, the first 3 lines are all related to a MSFT record which needs to be spread across multiple tables. The next three lines are all related to AAPL, And the next FOUR lines (yes, each record can have zero, one, or more secondary rows) are related to CSCO.
(If this is still not clear, all the "01" rows will be written to [Table1] with each row having an IDENTITY value. All the "02" rows will be written to [Table2] the a FK pointing to the correct [Table1] row. All the "03" rows will be written to... and so on.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,
I am trying to import a text file that has fixed length fields.
It also has column headers repeated in the file.
The text file is delimited by <CR><LF>.
Question 1
There are certain rows that end abruptly after a column for ex:
Row 1 <col1 data>.....<col2 data>.....<col3 data><CR><LF>
Row 2 <col1 data>.....<col2 data><CR><LF>
This seems to be throwing off the text file import as row 1 seems to be importing alright but row 2 gets ignored.
This not the behaviour I want. I want row 2 to also be imported and have a default of NULL for the columns that
are not specified.
Does anyone know how to achieve this?
Question 2
This is not that serious, but currently, I do not know of a way to ignore repeating column headers.
It would be nice if there was a way, but I can always resort to T-SQL based data cleaning after the import.
Thanks.

Hi!
I create a dataset from a sqlce 3.5 database (I drag-dropped the tables of the database on the DataSet).
And when I try to put a text with more than 4000 characters in the dataset, it throw me an exception ....
--> I tried to insert this text directly in sql ce and it works well! So I think that the DataSet has a limitation?? But the maxlength of the string coloumn of the dataset is set to 536870911
Do you have an idea about this problem?
thx for help and sorry for my bad english

I have imported sql Server 2005 database data into one mdb file. After importing a data into the mdb file, above column
data type converted into the memo type in the Access database.
now when I am trying to import a data from this MS Access File(db1.mdb) into the another SQL Server 2005 database, got the error of Unicode Converting a memo data type conversion in Export/Import data wizard.
Could you please let me know what is the reason?
I know that memo data type does not supported into the SQl Server 2005.

I have a few columns in table with default value defined as zero length string (''). I want to insert record from DetailsView which uses SqlDataSource as DataSource. In the ItemInserting event, if the data is not valid, I want to use zero length string for the column. But I always get Null instead of zero length string. The code in ItemInserting event looks like this:
If objddl.SelectedIndex > 0 Then e.Values("myFld") = objddl.SelectedItem.ValueElse e.Values("myFld") = ""End If
The line: e.Values("myFld") = "" put Null in the column.
How can I set a column as zero length string using the SqlDataSource?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

How to parse a string to equal length substrings in SQL
I am getting a long concatenated string from a query (CTVALUE1) and have to use the string in where clause by parsing every 6 characters..
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[PTEMP](
[ID] [char](10) NULL,
[name] [char](10) NULL,
[CTVALUE1] [char](80) NULL
)
INSERT INTO PTEMP
VALUES('11','ABC','0000010T00010L0001000T010C0001')
select * from ptemp
after parsing I have to use these values in a where clause like this
IN('000001','0T0001','0L0001','000T01','0C0001')
Now ,the values can change I mean the string may give 5 values(6 character) today and 10 tomorrow..So the parsing should be dynamic.

Hi there
I am importing data from a database on one server to the same database (exactly the same table structure etc) on another server. I am specifying the data from certain tables on the source database which are completely empty on the destination database. The tables on the destination database each have a primary key column (Identity Specification = YES, Is Identity = YES, Identity Increment = 1, Identity Seed = 1, Not for Replication = YES).
The error i'm getting is as follows:
Error 0xc0202049: Data Flow Task: Failure inserting into the read-only column "GroupID".
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
Error 0xc0202045: Data Flow Task: Column metadata validation failed.
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
Error 0xc004706b: Data Flow Task: "component "Destination - YvGroup" (40)" failed validation and returned validation status "VS_ISBROKEN".
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
Error 0xc004700c: Data Flow Task: One or more component failed validation.
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
Error 0xc0024107: Data Flow Task: There were errors during task validation.
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
I'm sure the most important error is the first one, "Data Flow Task: Failure inserting into the read-only column". Is this happening because i'm trying to import data into primary key columns that are usually populated by an auto incremented integer and is seeing it as read only?
How can I get round this?
Cheers

I'm having a problem with the XML Source data flow component not transferring the length attributes from an XML Schema to the column attributes of the output table.
An example schema that I have is:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?><data xmlns:xsd='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema' xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance'><xsd:schema> <xsd:simpleType name='NameType'> <xsd:restriction base='xsd:string'> <xsd:minLength value='0'/> <xsd:maxLength value='50'/> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> <xsd:element name='Name' type='NameType' nillable='true'/> <xsd:simpleType name='FamilyType'> <xsd:restriction base='xsd:string'> <xsd:minLength value='0'/> <xsd:maxLength value='50'/> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> <xsd:element name='Family' type='FamilyType' nillable='true'/> <xsd:element name='row'> <xsd:complexType> <xsd:sequence> <xsd:element ref='Name'/> <xsd:element ref='Family'/> </xsd:sequence> </xsd:complexType> </xsd:element> <xsd:element name='data'> <xsd:complexType> <xsd:sequence> <xsd:element ref='row' maxOccurs='unbounded'/> </xsd:sequence> </xsd:complexType> </xsd:element></xsd:schema> <!-- data follows --> <row><Name>Fred</Name><Family>Jones</Family></row></data>
When I reference file in the XML Source data control, it correctly infers that there are two columns, but the length of the strings in the columns are set as 255.
This behaviour appears to be at odds with the SSIS documentation (SQL Server Integration Services/Integration Services Object and Concepts/Data Flow Elements/Integration Services Sources/XML Source), which states (highlighting mine):
When the data is extracted from the XML data file, it is converted to an Integration Services data type. The XSD or inline schema may specify the data type for elements, but if it does not, the XML Source Editor dialog box assigns the Unicode string data type (DT_WSTR) to the column in the output that contains the element, and sets the column length to 255 characters. If the schema specifies the maximum length of an element, the length of output column is set to this value. If the maximum length is greater than the length supported by the Integration Services data type to which the element is converted, then the data is truncated to the maximum length of the data type. For example, if a string has a length of 5000, it is truncated to 4000 characters because the maximum length of the DT_WSTR data type is 4000 characters; likewise, byte data is truncated to 8000 characters, the maximum length of the DT_BYTES data type. If the schema specifies no maximum length, the default length of columns with either data type is set to 255. Data truncation in the XML source is handled the same way as truncation in other data flow components. For more information, see Handling Errors in Data.
Has anyone had any luck in getting string lengths automatically extracted from an XML document? If so, where I am going wrong?
Regards,
Michael

have tried to import data from a big (257Mb, I has about 1.000.000) flat file into a table, inside SSIS. The process doesn’t work correctly. It stops in the same register (about 179.000). I have a remote database which I need to make a local copy of. I have sucessfully scripted the db and created it locally. however I cannot import the data to the local server. I get this error:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot truncate table
i think i am doing everything ok but it still wont work.dbo.xxx beacause its being referenced by a foreign key constraint.
Any ideaas welcome.

String or binary data would be truncated. I get this error when entering data using sql server management studio express.
I am not running a sql to insert or update the table. This is through the EDI.
The data type is varchar(100). I enter one character and it errors on me. So this isn't a string being too long problem.
Any ideas?

Hi there
I am importing data from a database on one server to the same database (exactly the same table structure etc) on another server. I am specifying the data from certain tables on the source database which are completely empty on the destination database. The tables on the destination database each have a primary key column (Identity Specification = YES, Is Identity = YES, Identity Increment = 1, Identity Seed = 1, Not for Replication = YES). The import fails on the first table (YvGroup) whose primary key, "GroupID", is the foreign key within other tables (Relationship is set).
Or is it due to the relationship with other tables? In which case if you have a table structure set up with relationships how would you ever be able to import data?
How can I get round this?Cheers

I receiveed the error:
Error 0xc0202055: Data Flow Task: The column delimiter for column "Column x" was not found.
I would like to have the import continue., even the error occur. I have the error output to ignore, but doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestion on what to do next, or how to skip the row that create the problem.
thanks

Hello,
I am getting an error while trying to import data into SQL 2005 from an existing Access MDB database. When I try this on another workstation there are no problems and the data is imported successfully.
Could someone tell me what to look for or what setting I have incorrect. On the workstation with the problem I had removed SQL 2000 Personal Edition and installed SQL 2005 Standard Edition. Also, I have both Visual 2003 and 2005 installed on this workstation as well.
Thanks
