Could Not Continue Scan With NOLOCK Due To Data Movement

Aug 24, 2007

Hi all,

I'm getting this error on expanding the Databases node in SQL Server Management Studio Express Object Explorer:

Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum)
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)
Could not continue scan with NOLOCK due to data movement. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 601)

A similar error message also appeared when I tried opening an existing data connection within Database Explorer in Visual Web Developer Express. (However, the web application ran fine and it managed to access the database normally.)

These errors only appeared recently. Any ideas how to go about solving this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Fails With: Could Not Continue Scan With NOLOCK Due To Data Movement

Mar 20, 2008

We have a stored procedure that failed with: Could not continue scan with NOLOCK due to data movement

We are running with ISOLATION LEVEL READ UNCOMMITTED. There are other jobs running, some of which might be hitting these tables (all using the ROWLOCK hint - though I know that's not guaranteed), however, this stored proc would not be going near the same rows. But even if they were, we'd be happy with either the before-look or after-look. This needs to be a low-impact job and should have minimal impact on ther other jobs, so we can't take out locks. Is there any hint we can use to do this? e.g. can we tell the query to just wait until the data has stopped moving then try again?

What Is The Difference Between Clustered Index Scan And Table Scan

Jan 29, 2006

How can I improve performance of my search if I am looking in a table with more than ten million rows with a "like query"?

Does putting an index mean only telling the computer to start in a particular order?

if I index all the coloums does my search get faster ?

how can I decide on an indexing strategy?

SQL2K/Log Reader Fails With Error 9003 The LSN Passed To Log Scan Is Invalid

Aug 8, 2007

Hi All,
We have transactional replication between two SQL Server 2000, SP4 and database is in simple recovery.
Occassionally Logreader agent fails with error 9003 (The LSN (164051:119090:22) passed to log scan in database 'ReportDB' is
invalid).
But in April 2007 this error has occurred multiple times. We have opened the case with PSS in April 2007 but till now there
is no concrete solution.

Error details in ErrorLog:
2007-04-24 16:49:09.79 spid59 Error: 9003, Severity: 20, State: 1
2007-04-24 16:49:09.79 spid59 The LSN (164051:119090:22) passed to log scan in database 'ReportDB' is invalid..
Error details in Log reader agent:
Repl Agent Status: 3
Publisher: {call sp_repldone ( 0x000280d30001d1320016, 0x000280d30001d1320016, 0, 0)}
Publisher: {call sp_replcmds (100, 0)}
Status: 0, code: 0, text: 'The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'BR14D135R17'.'.
The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'BR14D135R17'.
Repl Agent Status: 6
Status: 0, code: 9003, text: 'The LSN (164051:119090:22) passed to log scan in database 'ReportDB' is invalid.'.

From above error details it can be seen that sp_repldone is already called for LSN 164051:119090:22 (0x000280d30001d1320016)
which means it is distributed.
Since LSN is distributed, transaction log of publisher for that LSN can be truncated by checkpoint process. And afterward if
logreader issues sp_replcmds for that LSN, we will get 9003 error.
So, question is why Logreader is looking for LSN if that is already distributed.
When checked "DBCC Opentran", it also reflect oldest distributed LSN as 164051:119090:22.

We tried changing the recovery model to FULL but that has only delayed the occurrence.
Once we have noticed that LSN mentioned in Error 9003 was already backed up one day before. And we don't think replication latency to be more than 3 hrs
(maximum).

After PSS recommendation, we have applied the hotfix 2187 but error has occurred again after one month.
Other recommendation is to disable read cache of hardware controller to avoid stale read(that we are working on). Current
setting is 100% read and 0% Write.

Other Details:
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition SP4 with Hotfix 2187
Window 2000 Advanced Server.
RAID 5 with array controller as HP Smart Array 641 Controller

Please let me know if you have faced such issue and have any idea on this problem.

Thanks,
Ramesh

IF NOT EXISTS (... - EXISTS TABLE : Nested Iteration. Table Scan.Forward Scan.

Sep 20, 2006

Hi,

This is on Sybase but I'm guessing that the same situation would happen on SQL Server. (Please confirm if you know).

I'm looking at these new databases and I'm seeing code similar to this all over the place:

if not exists (select 1 from dbo.t1 where f1 = @p1)
begin
select @errno = @errno | 1
end

There's a unique clustered in dex on t1.f1.

The execution plan shows this for this statement:

FROM TABLE
dbo.t1
EXISTS TABLE : nested iteration.
Table Scan.
Forward scan.
Positioning at start of table.

It's not using my index!!!!!

It seems to be the case with EXISTS statements. Can anybody confirm?

I also hinted to use the index but it still didn't use it.

If the existence check really doesn't use the index, what's a good code alternative to this check?

I did this and it's working great but I wonder if there's a better alternative. I don't really like doing the SET ROWCOUNT 1 and then SET ROWCOUNT 0 thing. SELECT TOP 1 won't work on Sybase, :-(.

SET ROWCOUNT 1
SELECT @cnt = (SELECT 1 FROM dbo.t1 (index ix01)
WHERE f1 = @p1
)
SET ROWCOUNT 0

Appreciate your help.

SQL 2012 :: Error (backup Failed To Complete The Command BACKUP LOG) In Event Viewer

Aug 23, 2013

On the SQL Server the Event Viewer shows the same messages and errors every evening between 22:05:00 and 22:08:00. The following information messages are shown for every database:

"I/O is frozen on database <database name>. No user action is required. However, if I/O is not resumed promptly, you could cancel the backup."

"I/O was resumed on database <database name>. No user action is required."

"Database backed up. Database: <database name>, creation date(time): 2003/04/08(09:13:36), pages dumped: 306, first LSN: 44:148:37, last LSN: 44:165:1, number of dump devices: 1, device information: (FILE=1, TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE: {'{A79410F7-4AC5-47CE-9E9B-F91660F1072B}4'}). This is an informational message only. No user action is required."

After the 3 messages the following error message is shown for every database:

"BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP LOG <database name>. Check the backup application log for detailed messages."

I have added a Maintenance Plan but these jobs run after 02:00:00 at night.

Where can I find the command or setup which will backup all databases and log files at 22:00:00 in the evening?

How Can I Trigger Full Backup On Tran Log Backup Error?

Aug 8, 2007

Hello,
I have MS SQL 2005 server with 300+ databases on it. The application is set up that way that it creates a new database as needed (dynamically). Do not ask me why - I hate this design... So, it can create 3-4 databases a day (random time).
I've scheduled full backup of all databases to run once at night, and it runs just fine. Besides that, I have scheduled tran logs backup of all databases to run every hour. This backup fails from time to time with the following error:

Executing the query "BACKUP LOG [survey_p0886464_test] TO DISK = N'D:\backups\log backups\survey_p0886464_test_backup_200708072300.trn' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'survey_p0886464_test_backup_20070807230002', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10
" failed with the following error: "BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup.
BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

So, I think what happens is since my full backup of all databases are scheduled to run only once at night, and tran logs every hour, when new database is created during the day, there is no full backup for it, that is why tran logs backup fails. Becuase after the failure, if I run full backup again, then tran log runs just fine afterwards.

I am new to MS SQL Server, I am mostly working with Sybase IQ. Do you know if I can "trigger" full backup every time when new database created to avoid tran lof failure?

Or is it possible to schedule full backup to run if tran log backup fails?
Any advice will be much appreciated.

NOLOCK Or Not To NOLOCK

Mar 9, 2005

I need some help to under stand when the right time is for NOLOCK. I work in a small dev group and NOLOCK seams to be a buzz word and others are throwing it in all over for no apparent reason.

I read the thing from http://www.sql-server-performance.com/ and I am sure that our web and SQL servers are about 100x over sized for the application. While are ASP.Net (VB) app may demonstrate some hesitation from time to time I am more inclined to blame poor VB.Net coding techniques before slow SQL. The point being the NOLOCK is being added to SELECTS that are not part of a transaction and were using the SQL data adapter to return datasets or single column values.

Also I am not even sure it’s being used correctly. The OLM has the example:
SELECT au_lname FROM authors WITH (NOLOCK)

However I am seeing it formatted like this:
SELECT au_lname FROM authors (NOLOCK)

I am by no mean an expert, I follow what I read in books or from examples from others. And I have never read in a book go crazy with NOLOCK because it’s the bomb!

Any thoughts? I am trying to learn as much as I can before I raise my hand and say this might be a bad idea.

Thanks

DTS- WITH (NOLOCK)

Mar 7, 2001

Hi,
I have a job that runs 3 seperate DTS packages.

The first step imports a file and runs successfully.

The second step which is the 2nd DTS package is hanging in the execute mode until I manually stop the job. Apparently,We discovered a bulk insert that is blocking a select statement--both proccesses are within this second DTS package. I tried using the WITH (UNLOCK) on the tables but this DTS package is still failing.

Does anyone have any suggestion? It would be greatly appreciated.

NOLOCK Help

Paul Randal,

There has been a discussion/debate going on this thread about the benefits and drawbacks of using the NOLOCK hint:
http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=67294

It occurred to me that you might know more about this than any of us, or at least be able to point us to a white paper or knowledge base article that explains the subject in more detail. Any light you can shed on the subject would be a big help.

NOLOCK On Views

Nov 1, 2005

Hey guys,

I came across a SQL statement, thought up by a developer, in which two views were joined with the NOLOCK hint:
SELECT v1.xxx, v2.yyy
FROM dbo.vw_SomeView v1 WITH (NOLOCK)
INNER JOIN dbo.vw_SomeOtherView WITH (NOLOCK) ON v1.id = v2.id
The views are not created the NOLOCK hint. So my question is: has the NOLOCK hint any effect here?

I've looked in the BOL and searched on the net but can't find anything on this particular topic.

Lex

PS. Personally I don't like to use views in JOINs. I've seen too many cases in which tables are joined twice just because they are part of both views. Further more I don't like the "random" use of NOLOCK because most people don't seem to understand the implications of it. But this is besides the point of my question ;)

NOLOCK Option ?

Hi,

I was sreading about NOLOCK that it could prevent deadlocks but could return data which is not committed yet.
1) Should we use NOLOCK with select statements
2) If the transaction isolation level is set appropriately (e.g. Serializable)in the component (for e.g COM+ component) but NOLOCK is specified in the select then would it return uncommitted data. I mean if the transaction is controlled at hihger level then what will be the Pros and Cons of using NOLOCK.

NOLOCK Clarifications

Feb 25, 2008

When the NOLOCK hint is included in a SELECT statement, no locks are taken when data is read. This gives a Dirty Read in a result set.
The data retrieved in the select statement may not be correct since some other process might have updated the data while it was taken in the select statement.

Now, Can I know what is the use of NOLOCK? In which way we can make efficient use of NOLOCK ???

Question About NOLOCK

Mar 30, 2008

Hi,

I have never used NOLOCK, or ROWLOCK, or anything of that sort. It's something I thought was over my head when I first encountered it and as I am gaining a better grip on SQL I have decided I want to try and tackle it. Also, because I think its causing me some problems :)

I recently implemented a new query into my application.

The query below gets the COUNT(*) of certain tables. Some of these tables are tall (5 million plus rows)

The counts returned are not absolutely critical information, and we are not joining or doing any other transactions based on this data. I believe running these counts on these pretty active tables (selects, inserts) are possibly causing slowdowns ?

Would using NOLOCK be an appropriate situation for something like this ? I am looking for a performance increase hopefully, and hoping there isnt much of a downside? I'm also not sure what type of reliability to expect from NOLOCK.

Any help much appreciated !!

Thanks once again

Deadlocks And Use Of Nolock

Jul 20, 2005

I am getting lot of deadlocks in my application. As it is very complexti avoid deadlocks at this stage of application we have done few stepsto lessen the impact. We have added retries after deadlock is capturted. We have added select * from TABLE with (nolock) wherever possible. But interestingly second step is not working. I have few simple selectstatements where i am using nolock criteria still I am gettingdeadlock victim error. Any idead why it happening. I thought as soonas I put nolock in the query it will ignore all the locks. My sp isCREATE procedure sp_Check_denomination@supply_till_idint,@product_codechar(4),@iso_currency_codechar(3),@denominationmoneyasdeclare @product_id numeric(5)select @product_id = product_id from product with (nolock) whereproduct_code = @product_codeif exists (select *from transaction_inventory TI with (nolock),product_ccy_denom PCD with (nolock)where TI.supply_till_id = @supply_till_idand TI.product_id = @product_idand TI.iso_currency_code= @iso_currency_codeand TI.denomination = @denominationand TI.product_id = PCD.product_idand TI.iso_currency_code = PCD.iso_currency_codeand TI.denomination = PCD.denominationand PCD.product_id=@product_idand PCD.denomination = @denominationand PCD.iso_currency_code=@iso_currency_codeand PCD.tradeable = 1)beginreturn(1)endelsebeginreturn(0)endGO

When To Use The NOLOCK Hint.

Jul 20, 2005

Background:I am currently working on a mission critical web based applicationthat is accessed 24 hours a day by users from just about every timezone. We use MS SQL Server as our database and we have lots ofproblems with time-outs. We used to have lots of problems with locksuntil my management decided that we would use the WITH (NOLOCK) hinton EVERY select statement and WITH (ROWLOCK) on EVERY updatestatement. I have argued since the beginning that the NOLOCK hintshould be the exception and not the rule. Meanwhile we continue tohave problems related to time-outs.Problem:I'm the one that they call when there are time-out errors.I am a programmer first and a DBA when I have to be. I'd really liketo hear from some of you who are the opposite. I realize that thereare many factors that contribute to slow response from a databaseserver (indexes, RAM, disk speed, etc.), but what I really need tohear from an expert is whether or not using NOLOCK on **EVERY** queryin a 30GB database that has 344 tables is a bad idea. Thanks in advance,Stephen McMahonJoin Bytes!
