Hi,I'm using sql server 2005 express edition. I have created a database using sql server management studio express edition. Now I'm trying to connect it in visual studio 2005. It show following error. An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connections to SQL 5erver 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact under the server's default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections, (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40- Could not open a connection to SQL Server) I have enables named pipes from Sql services configuration manager.

Hi,
I am trying to access the View through linked server connection .The linked server connection is between two sql server 2005.
The problem is I am not able to access 2 columns of nvarchar datatype of length 255, from the view through select statement.
I do a SELECT col1,col2 from VIEW,then getting the following error .
Cannot get the data of the row from the OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SRVXPR". Could not convert the data value due to reasons other than sign mismatch or overflow.
Then I tried with
Select cast(Col1 as nvarchar) ,
cast(col2 as nvarchar) from VIEW,
I am able to get the values.
The collation type is same for all underlying tables and also for the servers.
Is there any restrictions in handling nvarchar data thru linked server/ anyother size limitation.
I don't want to use cast as this will lead to performance problem.
Thanks,
Philip

Hi,We have 2 servers. Server1 is a 2000 box, with SP3 (yes I know it isnot up to date). Server2 is a 2005 box, SP2.I set up Server1 (2000) to have a linked server to Server2 (2005). Thereason I did this is because we are using a stored procedure onServer2 to send mail, as we have found that using mail on 2000 doesn'talways work as advertised. When I set up the linked server on the 2000 box, for security I justset it up to use a SQL Server user on the 2005 box. The SQL Serveruser on the 2005 box has permissions to run the stored procedure forsending mail. Here's the weird thing though. When calling the stored procedure onthe 2005 box from the 2000 box, sometimes we get an error that "Thedefault database cannot be opened", and the query does not run on the2005 box. However, it only happens *sometimes*. Other times, the queryruns fine.Since the problem seeemed to be with the default database, I changedthe SQL Server user on 2005 default database to the SAME database thatcontains the stored procedure. However, I just don't understand why it's even TRYING to open thedefault database, since when we called the linked server we are doingso as, and it's referencing the default database in the name:EXEC Server2.DefaultDatabase.dbo.StoredProcedureNameHowever, after changing the user's default database to"DefaultDatabase" as shown above, the query runs fine. Why are we having this problem? That is, if I change the defaultdatabase to something other than "DefaultDatabase", then the querydoesn't run, even though the database name is referenced in the abovequery??Obviously, this is not desireable, because that means we can only runqueries that are in "DefaultDatabase", which may not always be thecase. Thanks much

Hi there,
We've got an mssql database hosted on our fasthosts account, however I don't have any applications to access this. When using MySQL databases I use the MySQL control centre available on the MySQL website.
Are there any similar applications available (and if possible free!) that do a similar job for mssql.
Thanks for your help guys!

Hi all-
I need to invoke a UDF on a linked server. Is this possible?
eg:
I need to execute the following query from Server1
select *
from Server2.Database.owner.fnGetTree() AS Server2Tree
inner join Database.owner.fnGetTree() AS Server1Tree
on Server1Tree.NodeId = Server2Tree.NodeId
Thanks for your time

Is there any way to access a linked server without using four-part naming?
My problem is that I am trying to find a way to connect to an access database on a 64 bit system (there is no 64 Jet OleDb provider) and I have to run in a 64 bit process so no WoW solutions will work for me .
I am looking into trying to use a Sql Linked server but am trying to find a workaround without having to re-write all our queries to use four-part naming.
Is there someway to configure a connectionstring to default to executing against a linked server??
Any help or suggestions would be welcomed.

I created a linked Excel server that is stored in a SQL2000 database.
I can run the following from the SQL server with no problem.

Hi,
I'm trying to extract all the users and their membership to groups, and the membership of groups to groups from active directory though a link to server.
I can get the users. I can get the groups.... individually.
I can't get the info of what user is a member of or who are members of a group.
Anyone know how to do this or am I going to have to right a vb app? (Anyone already got the code...)
I want to load this data into tables for reporting in my Data Warehouse.
Cheers

Hi Gurus,
In my code, I need to update the table on the linked server according to the XML input. A table variable is used to store the value from XML.
But the collation of the linked database doesn't match with the default collation used by the table variable, so the table join fails.
I am thinking about to open the connection to the linked server directly, and use the target database. So the table variable collation should be as same as the target database collation.
Is it possible to open the connection to the linked server in c# ?
Thanks and best regards,
Jennifer Zhao

Hi
I have created a linked server from SQL Server 2005 (SP 1) to SQL Service 2000 (SP 4) with a sql server login that is available on both servers but with different passwords and permissions.
I am getting the following error while accessing the linked server in management studio based on the scenario given below ;
------ Error Message Starts
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "(SQL Server 2000 instance name)" returned message "Communication link failure".
Msg 10054, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 0
Login failed for user 'abc'.
------ Error Message Ends
Consider login name is abc.
Now this login abc has sysadmin rights on sql server 2005.
The same login abc has only db_datareader rights on sql server 2000 on just one database and is not associated with any fixed server role.
I have configured the linked server using the following options;
1. I have tried impersonating login from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000 .
2. I have also tried specifying remote login / password option.
Anyone having any idea, would be of great help.
Regards,
Salman Shehbaz.

Hi,I am using MSSQL 2k, and I have a linked server set up to an Oracle RDBversion 7. It goes thru an OLE DB provider for ODBC drivers on a systemDSN, which is using an Oracle RDB ODBC driver version 3.0.2.The problem occurs when I send a query that returns zero rows - queryanalyzer just does not complete nor return. This problem is not seenwhen there are rows being returned.I ran a trace and this is the error message I get-:Non-interface error: OLE DB provider MSDASQL returned an incorrectvalue for DBPROP_CONCATNULLBEHAVIOR which should be eitherDBPROPVAL_CB_NULL or DBPROPVAL_CB_NON_NULLAnybody who experienced this before has a solution? Thanks,Lawrence

Hi All.
I test OLEDB provider for Interbase/Firebird servers with MSSQL 2005 [standard v9.00.1399.06] and find next problem:
If "Allow InProcess"=No - MSSQL read column data with binary blob through DBBINDING
-----
iOrdinal :12
obValue :0
obLength :0
obStatus :0
dwPart :1 [DBPART_VALUE]
dwMemOwner :0
eParamIO :0
cbMaxLen :2147483647
dwFlags :0
wType :0x80[DBTYPE_BYTES ]
bPrecision :255
bScale :255
---------
This column has flags: 0xEA [MAYDEFER | WRITE_UNKNOWN | ISNULLABLE | MAYBENULL | ISLONG]
Why MSSQL send to my provider cbMaxLen==-1 ???
Columns with fixed-length not has this problem - MSSQL create accessor with correct DBBINNDING's
----
If I configure OLEDB provider with "Allow InProcess"=Yes - All is OK. MSSQL get this column through storage-object.
Sorry for my english

Creating a web application. Running a simple query "SELECT username FROM vwCustomer"
vwCustomer is a view built on top of an Access DB which is set up as a linked server. Within SQL Server that view responds immediately. But when I try to access it from an ASP page it takes over 20 seconds to respond.
Used the following to create the linked server:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver 'DBName', 'Jet 4.0', 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'c:databasesdatabase.mdb'
GO
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'DBName', FALSE, NULL, 'Admin', ''
GO
The view is simply(this works fine in SQL Server):
SELECT * FROM DBName.db.dbo.customer
The ASP page:
SELECT * FROM vwCustomer
Can anyone give me a hint as to where the bottleneck is? Or how I can figure that out using SQL Profiler or something?
Please help!

We are currently running SQL Reporting Services 2000 and have the ability to open a linked report in either a new window or tab just by right-clicking on the link and selecting from the context menu. We are looking to migrate to SQL Reporting Services 2005 and when you right click on a linked report link, there is no option to open the linked report in either a new window or tab.
So my question is, is there a way to have linked reports open in either a new tab or window in SQL Reporting Services 2005? I searched this forum but all I saw were some round-about ways of accomplishing this using javascript. We have a lot of reports and would like to avoid altering each one to allow the ability to open a linked report in a new tab or window.

I have successfully connected to a sybase 11 database and have successfully run a couple of open query statements against this database, I have now placed this open query in a stored procedure and it works well, but when I want to pass parameter variables has part of my open query it does not like it. It asks me to declare the variable which is a parameter of the stored procedure. Is there any way I can pass in a variable value has part of my query

The following problem is in Access 2003 as front end and SQL Server Express holding the data.
I have about 50 tables in Access linked to the SSE.
When I try to open and work with the linked tables using the following code, some of the table works fine and other give error 3622.
********************************************
Dim Tab1 As Recordset, DB1 As Database, SQL1 As String
Set DB1 = CurrentDb
SQL1 = "SELECT * FROM Any_Table"
Set Tab1 = DB1.OpenRecordset(SQL1, DB_OPEN_DYNASET)
do the required work with Any_Table
Tab1.Close: Set DB1 = Nothing
********************************************
I can not figure out why some table open fine and some give error.
If I use ADO all tables will open without problem but it works much slower then the code above.
I appreciate any help.
Thanks
I just got the solution from another forum, a dbSeeChanges option must be added to the open statment.
Hope it may help someone, this issue is solved.

I've verified that the right path is setup and I've tried installing about every driver and none of them are working. I created a new database in 9.0 and the I can access it fine. Also, there are old tables that are accessible in the same path, just not the ones I need. Any ideas would be helpful..

Hi Guys:
Our company wanted to try out SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition (64 Bit). So, we were on free trial of the Enterprise Edition for past 5 months. After which we decided to go for SQL SERVER 2005 Standard Edition (64 Bit). And, Last week, we installed the SQL Server Standard Edition (64 Bit) on our server. After installation, everything was restored as before.
The version we are on right now is:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (X64) Mar 23 2007 18:41:50 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)
Strangely, a job which ran fine till then is failing with the following error: And, to be more specific, when this job is run manually in the form of a stored procedure using the query optimizer it runs fine. But, when its executed as a scheduled job on SQL Agent, it fails. The History logs record the following error.
Error :
The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2" reported an error. Authentication failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7399) Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2". [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7303) OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2" returned message "Invalid authorization specification". [SQLSTATE 01000] (Error 7412).
I tried everything possible, even recreated the job, but, no avail.
I also considered the possibility if SQL Agent login account did not have enough permissions. So, I changed the SQL Agent login to windows authentication, but the job still fails. So, its the problem has nothing to do with login accounts either.
For the record, I have cross checked all these too.
1. Enabled the remote connections in Surface Area Config
2. Added local server login to remote server login mappings.
3. Checked 'Rpc' and 'Rpc Out' under server options. Also, the Connection Timeout and Query Timeout have been set to zero (0).
Any suggestions pointing towards problem solution appreciated.
Thank you.
