Error Reading Certain Numeric Values With VFPOLEDB Driver

Aug 29, 2006

It appears that the VFPOLEDB driver tries to convert numeric types in VFP to decimal types in .NET. In this case, it's a Numeric 9,3 in VFP and it's trying to put it into a decimal 8,3 in .NET.

I know that VFP has this funny quirk where if you don't use all of the decimal places after the decimal point, it allows you to use extras in front of the decimal point. In our case, the number is 104895.83 and yes, VFP is happy storing this in a Numeric 9,3 column.

When trying to read this in .NET, you get this message:

System.InvalidOperationException

The provider could not determine the decimal value. blah, blah, blah...

The question then is - is there a work-around? I can find no way to force .NET to use greater precision. About all I can come up with is to catch the exception and return a nice error message asking the user to make the column larger in VFP.

Here's the .NET code, thanks in advance

Mike

string sqlString = "SELECT * FROM " + Path.GetFileName(dbfFullPath);

OleDbConnection oleConn = new OleDbConnection("Provider=VFPOLEDB.1;Data Source=" +

folderName + ";Collating Sequence=MACHINE;");

OleDbCommand oleCmd = new OleDbCommand(sqlString, oleConn);

OleDbDataReader oleReader;

try

{

oleConn.Open();

oleReader = oleCmd.ExecuteReader();

VFPOLEDB Provider Access Denied Error On Linked Server

Apr 11, 2008

Hallo
i'm trying to connect a VFP DBC as a linked server on MSSQL2000sp3a, using following parameters:

Product name: VFP

Data source: \networkpath odbc

Provider: VFPOLEDB.1

No security context
I'm trying the same operation both from a W2000sp4 server (+ MDAC 2.8sp1 ?) and a WXPPsp2, against two identical copies of the DBC that resides on two different path (one on the final path and one on a test path).
From WXPPsp2 everything runs ok, from W2000 i'm always getting this error:
Error 7399: OLE/DB Provider 'VFPOLEDB' IUnknown::QueryINterface returned 0x80070005: Access Denied
(already reported in this thread, http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1832362&SiteID=1 but it didn't helped me)

The error happens independently from the user the query runs under (basicly AD account, both domain admin and normal user).
MSSQL runs under a domain account which have full permissions (for test purpose) on the directories where DBC reside.

I did no further modifications on the WXP machine in order to have the linked server running, simply it ran smoothly from the beginning.

Clearly the difference rely on the different OS... but what else?

i ran component checker to determine the MDAC version but some components version numbers slightly differs from the expected ones (eg. resulting version is 2.0.1064 versus 2.0.1022 expected in MDAC 2.8) so i suppose to have MDAC2.8 sp1 on the server.
thanks in advance

VFPOLEDB For Linked Server Reported An Error. Access Denied

Jul 8, 2007

Hi Cindy,
After hours (days?) researching this, your name keeps popping up, you must be the GOTO person for VFP. So:

We have a server that runs a VFP application and stores .dbf free tables in a directory shared as F:apps ele.

I am working on an XPPro box running SQL Server Express 2005 using Management Studio Express.

I am logged on as a user with administrator rights for the domain

We would like to be able to query this data and move it to our SQL tables as needed.

Here is what I have:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'tele',
@srvproduct = 'VFP',
@provider = 'VFPOLEDB',
@datasrc = 'F:apps ele',
@provstr = 'VFPOLEDB.1'
GO

SELECT * FROM tele...PROSPECT_DIVU

Here is what I get:

Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "tele" reported an error. Access denied.
Msg 7301, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the required interface ("IID_IDBCreateCommand") from OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "tele".

I have tried:

exec sp_addlinkedsrvlogin
@rmtsrvname = 'tele',
@useself = false,
@locallogin = NULL,
@rmtuser = 'admin',
@rmtpassword = NULL
go

Same result.

I have also tried:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
'tele2',
'Jet 4.0',
'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'F:apps ele',
NULL,
'dBase IV'
GO

When I run:

select * from tele2...prospect_divu

I get:

OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "tele2" returned message "The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'prospect_divu'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_COLUMNS" for OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "tele2". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.

What would you suggest?

NULL Values Returned When Reading Values From A Text File Using Data Reader.

Feb 23, 2007

I have a DTSX package which reads values from a fixed-length text file using a data reader and writes some of the column values from the file to an Oracle table. We have used this DTSX several times without incident but recently the process started inserting NULL values for some of the columns when there was a valid value in the source file. If we extract some of the rows from the source file into a smaller file (i.e 10 rows which incorrectly returned NULLs) and run them through the same package they write the correct values to the table, but running the complete file again results in the NULL values error. As well, if we rerun the same file multiple times the incidence of NULL values varies slightly and does not always seem to impact the same rows. I tried outputting data to a log file to see if I can determine what happens and no error messages are returned but it seems to be the case that the NULL values occur after pulling in the data via a Data Reader. Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and get some additional debugging information around this error?

Order Of Rows And Columns Returned When Reading With Excel ODBC Driver

Jun 19, 2007

Hi,

I'm reading values from a named range within an Excel spreadsheet using the Excel ODBC driver. If I ask for all columns within a range, using e.g. select * from 'named range', does the driver ensure that the returned rowset has the same column and row ordering as in the spreadsheet? In other words, if a named range on a spreadsheet is the block of cells:

name age

richard 54

jemima 27

I want to make sure that my returned rowset is not going to be:

age name

jemima 27

richard 54

I know that proper databases do not guarantee the order of returned values (unless you specify it) but since Excel is a fixed view of data I was hoping that a returned rowset of values would retain their spreadsheet ordering.

Thanks,

When I try the following ie to populate a variable with that value I get the error -

Any ideas ??

Reading Default Values Instead Of NULL From A Flat File

Oct 22, 2007

Hi,

I have the following problem: I'm connected to flat file source and trying to read data that is later inserted in an MS Access database. Everything wokrs fine instead of one thing - when I have null values in the flat file, I want those NULL values to be inserted in the MS Access db, instead of that what happens is that I actually get the default values for a column type from the flat file and later insert that defalut value. For example if I have a null value in an four-bite-signed-integer column of the flat file, I get 0 as value.

I thouth of solution using a "Derived Column" transformation which can transform the zeros into nulls, but decided to check with you guys if there is a smarter thing to do (for example to edit the flat file source to read the NULLs correctly).

Any advice is appreciated! Many thanks

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Using Not Like To Filter Out Non-numeric Values From Varchar Field

Mar 26, 2014

I am putting a SELECT statement together where I need to evaluate a results field, to determine how the color indicator will show on a SSRS report. I am running into a problem when I try to filter out any non-numeric values from a varchar field, using a nested CASE statement.

For example, this results field may contain values of '<1', '>=1', '1', '100', '500', '5000', etc. For one type of test, I need a value of 500 or less to be shown as a green indicator in a report, and any value over that would be flagged as a red. Another test might only allow a value of 10 or less before being flagged with a red.

This is why I setup a CASE statement for an IndicatorValue that will pass over to the report to determine the indicator color. Using CASE statements for this is easier to work with, and less taxing on the report server, if done in SQL Server instead of nested SSRS expressions, especially since a variety of tests have different result values that would be flagged as green or red.

I have a separate nested CASE statement that will handle any of the values that contain ">" or "<", so I am using the following to filter those out, and then convert it to an int value, to determine what the indicator value should be. Here is the line of the script that is erring out"

case when (RESULT not like '%<%') or (RESULT not like '%>%') then
CASE WHEN (CONVERT(int, RESULT) between 0 and 500) THEN '2'
ELSE '0'

The message I am getting is: Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '<1' to data type int.

I thought a "not like" statement would not include those values for converting to an int, but that does not seem to be working correctly. I did also try moving the not to show as "not RESULT like", and that did not change the message.

How I can filter out non-numeric values before converting the rest of the varchar field (RESULT) to int, so that it is only converting actual numbers?

Reporting Services :: How To Extract Only Numeric Values From A String In SSRS

May 29, 2015

I have a report which is redirecting to a subreport. The main report is having multi value parameter. I need to pass these  multi values to sub report. Passing parameters from MDX report to T-sql report. So, I'm using the below exp.

=SPLIT(REPLACE(TRIM(Join(Parameters!Grade.Label,",")),",   ",","),",")
The value will look like this
01-Manger
02-Senior Mange
21-Associate
25-Associate Trainee

This is working for me in all the cases except one. In all other cases, the parameter's Label and Value field has same data in the sub report. But, in a specific parameter I'm getting Label and Value data are different. I'm getting an alpha numeric string value from MDX report , but I need to pass only the numeric values to the sub report since its value field contains only numeric value. The numeric value is coming at the starting of the string data. So I have used Mid()

=SPLIT(Mid(REPLACE(TRIM(Join(Parameters!Grade.Label,",")),",
",","),1,2),",")

Result will be   01

But, mid() will give only the first value. It is working for single value. But I need to extract multiple values.

Numeric Or Time-scale Values Apparently Produce 2 Datasets?

Mar 30, 2008

Hi All,
I have developed few charts - line graphs - and have checked the Numeric or time-scale values on the X-Axis. Now, when the graphs come out, they appear to have two datasets. For example, if the X axis has values from 1st march to 14th March, then there will be a line from 1st March to 14th March, but additionally there will be another one, pointing to different datapoint, and again starts from 1st March and ends at 14th March. Whereas I think it is because of the Numeric or time-scale values selection, but I am not sure. Also, is there a particular way to interpret such graphs??

Thanks a lot, I would have loved to give a picture, but I think I cannot give it.. I did not find an option..

Let me know if the question is not clear enough..

Calling An SQL Server 2005 Stored Procedure Within Microsoft Access And Reading Values

Jan 14, 2008

Goodday.

I have finally been able to create a connection from Access to the SQL 2005 Server and was able to call a stored proc (in Server) in the following way

Code Block
Dim cnn As New ADODB.Connection
Dim cmd As New ADODB.Command
Dim rst As New ADODB.Recordset

cnn.ConnectionString = "Provider='sqloledb'; Data Source='Private';" & _
"Initial Catalog='DBName';Integrated Security='SSPI';"

cnn.Open

cmd.ActiveConnection = cnn
cmd.CommandText = "sp_DefaultEntityData"
cmd.CommandType = adCmdStoredProc

Set rst = cmd.Execute

rst.MoveFirst
Do While Not rst.EOF
lstEntity.AddItem (rst.Fields(0)), 0
'lstEntity.AddItem (rst.Fields(1)), 1
rst.MoveNext
Loop

The Stored Proc is as follow:

Code Block
set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_DefaultEntityData]
AS
BEGIN

SET NOCOUNT ON;

SELECT tblEntities.[Name], tblEntities.PrimaryKey
FROM tblEntities
ORDER BY tblEntities.PrimaryKey;

END

The table contains 24 entries

As you can see in the VB code, I am trying to read the returned "table" into an Access ListBox. The listbox should display the entities Name but not the Primary key, but the primary key should still be "stored" in the to so that it can be used to access other data.

I have moved the tables from Access to SQL Server 2005, and would also like to port all the sql queries to sp's in SQL Server. The old way for populating the listbox was a direct SQL query in the RowSource property field. I have tried to set the lstEntity.RowSource = rst but it did not work.

Here are my Q's:
1) As what does the SP return when it is called and is there a better way to catch it than I am doing at the moment?
2) How do I read the values into the listbox, without displaying the primary key in die box?

Thank you in advance!
Any help is very much appreciated.
