SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Ensuring Upgrade Advisor Is Running Properly?

Oct 30, 2015

I have a SQL Server 2008 instance that is running on "LiveServer" our production database (ProdDB) - and we need to upgrade to 2014. In order to do some upgrade testing, I spun up a VM with the same version of SQL server on the test VM (TestServer), did a backup of the production DB from the live server, and restored it to TestServer under a different name (ProdDBUA).

I then installed SQL2014 Upgrade advisor onto TestServer, and ran it, checking all the boxes (reporting services etc..) and it all came back clean - no issues whatsoever - not a single warning even. I'm under the impression that stored procs/functions etc... all reside within the DB, so a backup will include those. Is that correct?

The problem is, I know I have stored Procs, functions and views that use deprecated joins in that LiveServer.ProdDB. What do I need to do/configure/check in order to make sure that the Upgrade Advisor is actually checking through all that T-SQL that has deprecated code? I want to have a list to give to my report writers of procs/functions/views that need to be rewritten prior to the upgrade going live.

If there is a modification that needs to be run on the TestServer.ProdDBUA, a cursor to change the path etc. DB is running in Compatibility mode 90.

Error Running Child Packages From Parent Package - Error 0xC0011008

Mar 31, 2008

Hey...

I am running a parent SSIS package (running sp2, 9.0.3042) that calls several child packages.

On our development server, we now cannot run this because we get 1 or more of these errors:

"Error 0x80004003 while preparing to load the package. Invalid pointer . "
"Error 0xC0011008 while preparing to load the package. Error loading from XML. No further detailed error information can be specified for this problem because no Events object was passed where detailed error information can be stored. . "

It is not occuring on the same packages. It varies every time it is run.

I can run every one of the child packages individually, using the same login ID that the parent is executed under.

The parent package works fine on my local machine and other servers running the same version of SSIS. Just not on this server.

Does anyone have any ideas???

Thanks

Error Running SP From ADO 2.6 And VB6 - Command.execute Error

Aug 9, 2006

Hi there

I have small problem with the ADO 2.6 - 2.8 Command object.

I created a Stored procedure preforming some tasks within a tran.

whitin the tran i'm collecting the @@ERROR values and in the end (after tran closing )generating the correct error string - which will be send back to the caller

in the VB6 app, i'm using a command object with the next line:

Set MyRecordset= MyCommand.Execute

In all the cases and option, when i run the SP - the command preform the tasks and return closed recordset (with the currect answer) and i can't read it.

the only solution that worked until now: i need to call MyRecordset.Open which will requery the SP again and generate an error (User defined error).

It happens only when i run command.execute with SP that preforms multitasks and return result recordset.

As the system disks are seperate from the data disks. We did a fresh install of Windows, then installed SQL Server, applied service pack version 3, and then restored the master database.

From Query Analyser everything appears fine. I can query all the databases and tables, see them all, the web applications talk the database fine so all the users have recreated OK.

However .... if we try and look at the database through management console we get the following error.

A connection could not be established to ....

This happends logged in locally to the machine as administrator as well as connecting remotely. Does anybody have any idea what is happening?

Upgrade Advisor Error I Don't Understand

Jan 11, 2007

I'm carrying out an investigation into how much effort will be involved in upgrading our database from SQL Server 7.0 to SQL Server 2005. I've downloaded the Upgrade Advisor and run in against a copy of our production database. Most of the issues are trivial and I understand how to resolve them apart form one (to me) meaningless one:

When to Fix : Before

Description : Class Not Registered (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))

Details : SVCACCTREQ

That's all the information it gives, except for a "This issue is resolved" checkbox. Anyone got any idea what the problem is, or how I go about tracking down the cause?

I'm running the analysis tool from a W2K Professional Client, connecting to SQL Server 7.0 running on an NT4 Server using Windows authentication. The account I'm connecting with is a member of the System Administrator group in SQL Server and is a local admin on the client, and a member of the Users group on the server.

Any pointers appreciated.

Cheers,

Bill
