Hi,
I used to work with Sql 2000 and I could easily import a text file into my database and then convert the fields (all nvarchar) to appropriate data types. However, this procedure does not work with Sql 2005.
After I import a text file to Sql 2005 and when I convert nvarchar to numeric, I get "Error converting data type nvarchar to numeric".
Could you please let me know how can I fix this issue. Thanks in advance for your reply.
I am using MS SQL Server 2008R2 along with VB 2010.The first question is: why is it even trying to convert anything to numeric? I have NO numeric data types. And I don't have any nvarchar data types either. I'm very confused.Doesn't nchar include any and all characters, in any combination? Should I change everything to text data type? Maybe something else? Some values are going to be blank. The Lab/Source Lots have numbers, letters and dashes.
My stored procedure:
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.MChemsInsert
(
@LabLot nchar(10),
@Chem nchar(50),
@Source nchar(50),
@SourceLot nchar(10),
[code]....
When I run the following sql query:
"update table set price = price * 1.1 "..
I get the following error : "Msg 8115, Level 16, State 8, Line 1.. Arithmetic overflow error converting nvarchar to data type numeric. The statement has been terminated."
The table is set to nvarchar, and i am just trying to make the prices go up 10%.
I'm running the following statement...
The column is currently float (8). Need to convert to numeric. I've tried cast, convert. no go for either.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
..... select ... convert(numeric(38,0), colname)
TIA,
Jeremy
Hi all
I want to pass a list of nvarchar characters to my procedure, then import them into a temporary table as numeric(5,2) numbers.
The code below does this but the values are corrupted (e.g. 76.25 becomes 7 in the table).
Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thank you!
declare @separator_position int
declare @array_value nvarchar
declare @separator char
DECLARE @numberList NVARCHAR(MAX)
SET @numberList = '23|76.25|100.36|45.54|87.14|74.25|8|98|'
SET @separator = '|'
SET @separator_position = NULL
SET @array_value = NULL
DECLARE @myTable TABLE(ID INT IDENTITY(1,1), compLevel NUMERIC(5,2))
WHILE patindex('%' + @separator + '%', @numberList) <> 0
BEGIN
SELECT @separator_position = patindex('%' + @separator + '%' , @numberList)
SELECT @array_value = LEFT(@numberList, @separator_position - 1)
INSERT INTO @myTable (compLevel) VALUES (CONVERT(NUMERIC(5,2), @array_value))
SELECT @numberList = stuff(@numberList, 1, @separator_position, '')
END
SELECT * FROM @myTable
We have an address table with a house_num field which is a nvarchar.
Most of house numbers are numbers like 1234, 0989
But some of them have a letter behind it like 678 B, 8909 F, even some like this 123/B
We would like to remove any non-numeric letter for this column.
Is there a way to do it?
when I run below query I got Error of Arithmetic overflow error converting numeric to data type numeric
declare @a numeric(16,4)
set @a=99362600999900.0000
The 99362600999900 value before numeric is 14 and variable that i declared is of 16 length. Then why this error is coming ? When I set Length 18 then error removed.
Guys
I'm getting the above when trying to populate a variable. The values in question are :
@N = 21
@SumXY = -1303765191530058.2251000000
@SumXSumY = -5338556963168643.7875000000
When I run, SELECT (@N * @SumXY) - (@SumXSumY * @SumXSumY) in QA I get the result OK which is -28500190448996439680147097583285.072256 ie 32 places to left of decimal and 6 to the right
When I try the following ie to populate a variable with that value I get the error -
SELECT R2Top = (@N * @SumXY) - (@SumXSumY * @SumXSumY)@R2Top is NUMERIC (38, 10)
Any ideas ??
If a Select is done on a column whose data type is nvarchar(16) and contains only numerals (UPC numbers) the select does not return the record.
1. Query with numerals in nvarchar column works as long as multiple records are returned (LIKE '012%')
2. Numeric (INT only one tested) columns works as expected
3. String columns with alpha data works as expected
4. Problem only exist when running in Device Emulator and/or actual device.
5. Same test on desktop app runs as expected.
6. Windows Mobile 6, Vista Ultimate
7. Same results when when connection to device from SSMS
8. SQL Servers comes on

Hi all,
I defined an user string type varible in the package as AccountLen. I am trying to use this varible in the Expression of Derived Column transformation.
I want to retrieve a part of column, i.e: Right(Column1, @AccountLen), this is always wrong because the AccountLen is string type. How I can convert it to the numeric so that can be used in the RIGHT function?
Thanks

I have a data type float with a value of 10000487930 that I'm trying to insert into a data type nvarchar and am getting the result of '1.00005e+010'. I've tried cast(field as nvarchar) however this is not working. What might fix this? I cannot change the insert table data type.

Hi,
I read the topic from JROdden and this case is similiar but...
I got several varchar fields with
values like
1.2
1.3
... these I can covert with
select CONVERT(dec(5,2), fieldname) as fieldname
In fact I also solved undefined- and NULL-values with.
CONVERT(decimal(12, 2), CASE WHEN GESCHKOSTMAX IS NULL OR
GESCHKOSTMAX < '0' THEN '0' ELSE GESCHKOSTMAX END) as GESCHKOSTMAX,
But now there are values like
1,4 and these ones neither CONVERT nor CAST will handle.
I tried the
SELECT DISTINCT KMPAUSCHALE
FROM extr_INTFIRMA
WHERE (isnumeric(KMPAUSCHALE) = 1)
and get
0,40
0.25
0.30 and so on...
The error is:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Driver][SQL Server]Error converting datatype varchar to decimal. (or float or numeric (whatever I tried))
I think the easiest way would be to insist on higher data quality but
I also would like to solve this interesting challenge.
Thanks for any hints
By the way, I followed rudys link to
http://rudy.ca/afdb.html
and now I know how I could protect myself !!!!
There must be a voice in my head saying:
Try the db-forum, try it and stay happy... ;-)
best regards and have fun with new year eve.

I have to store the result of a calculation in a column of type CHAR(7) (and am unable to change the column type).
The calculation can have results ranging in size from 0.1234567 to 99999999.
In the first case, I would need to store the value of 0.12345 in the column. In the later case, an error should be thrown.
So I need to store all of the significant digits from the left of the decimal (if there are < 7) and as many of the digits to the right as will fit into a CHAR(7), with the remaining precision being truncated.
I have one table and this field is character field with save data in below.
Bonus_table->bonus_amt_field. Char(20)
======================================
Record information
0
Null
Blank
3
4
Null
Blank
if i want to convert this character field => change to numeric field to display ,how to handle "Blank" and "null" record?
The result expect:
0
0
0
3
4
0
0
I try this query but wrong message :
select cast(convert(numeric,3)bonus_amt) as bonus_amt
from test
Hi All there -
I want to show the o/p of a cursor on a single line. There is a numeric variable that needs to be clubed with the character variable. If I use char() the o/p is not right.
How do I do that?
Greetings -
I have a problem that I am unable to fix. I am migrating data from one ERP system to another ERP system.
I created a table in SQL via DTS by converting an excel file into an SQL Table.
The table has a column 'currentcost'. Most items in the table have a value in this column. However, some items have <null> in this column. I am updating another SQL table with currentcost that is in this column. However, my table being updated requires a value in its corresponding currentcost table. Therefore, my update statement terminates due to the source table having <null> values.
I tried an update statement to convert <null> into a '0'
It was 'update Source_New_ItemMaster set currentcost = '0' where currentcost = <null>
This obviously didn't work. How can a change a <null> value in an SQL table to '0' (zero)?
I have imported some data to sql2k from my old system. Somehow, it importedinvoice amount to char type.I just created another column called invamt2 type NUMERIC so I can copy orconvert content of invamt which is type CHAR. There are about 50,000records.How can I convert/cast from char type to numeric type ?Thanks

Hi ,
I am trying to convert a char field of lenght 5 into numeric (5,2) 999.99 format ,
i am getting an arithmentic overflow error.
The Character Data is 5 in length
It works fine if the Data is 00000
it fails if there is any number in the data
Like 10000
or 05000
How do i represent these into Numeric (5,2)
please let me know what taransformation to use and how.
Thanks,
I need to sort by an ntext field, but it won't let me do it.
However, if I cast the field as nvarchar(100), I can use ORDER BY on that.
Is there any reason that this is a bad idea? In my testing, ordering by a converted ntext field was actually *faster* than ordering by an nvarchar (same data in the fields).

Hi,
how to convert nvarchar datatype to float?
Regards
Prashant
Hi guys, how are you? I was wondering how I do to convert int to nvarchar and vice versa?
Thank you very much.
Hi everyone.
So as the subject says, I have a few fields that are nvarchar but hold date information. Most of these fields I have been able to move to datetime easiliy enough, simply by going into edit mode for the table and converting the fields to datetime. But 1 field is giving me problems I keep getting this error.
quote:- Unable to modify table.
Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime.
The statement has been terminated.
I really dont know why I'm getting this error, but I"m assuming it may have to be something like one of the records may not be in date format. But I don't know if this is the case and I don't know how to locate where my problem is coming from.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
I have the following code:
INSERT INTO Reports_PI_Recent
SELECT TOP(13)* FROM Reports_PI
ORDER BY RecordKey desc
problem is that the data I am trying to insert is of the type nvarchar. eg: 06.50
I need it to be converted to type decimal (or float) before it is inserted in the new table.
Is there a way to do this within the SELECT TOP expression?
I'm new to SQL so please walk me through this step by step.
All the columns in my table have a data type of nvarchar, however, some of them need to be changed to decimals.
Here's an example of what my table (cicc.972file) looks like now
Account nvarchar(8) Balance nvarchar(8) Percent nvarchar(5)
45678935 459600 03500
78965215 005643 10000
and here's what I need it to look like
Account Number Balance Percent
45678935 4596.00 0.3500
78965215 56.43 1.0000
This seems like it should be ridiculously easy, but I keep running into road blocks. Like I said, this is just a sample from my table. My real table has 90 columns in it and about half of them need to be changed to either a dollar representation or a percent.
Thanks for you help!
