I am trying to upgrade my MSDE 2000 (SP3)to SP4, but it is giving an error of "invalid instance".
Here is what is on the machine (before running any commands):
I do not see any SQL Server installation on my machine under Start-All Programs. But, I have a directory for SQL Server under:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL
The sqlserver.exe is in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLBinn and version = 2000.80.760.0
To upgrade MSDE 2000 (SP3) to MSDE SP4, I downloaded this file from Microsoft's website: SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE
I ran the above .exe and extracted the files on my hard drive. Now, I have the C:SQL2KSP4MSDE directory and the Setup.exe is in the MSDE directory.
I looked in the services and stopped the following service:
MSSQLSERVER
I tried running:
setup /upgradesp sqlrun /L*v C:MSDELog.log
This command ran and did not show any error. I then rebooted the machine, checked that the MSSQLSERVER service is running and checked the version of sqlserver.exe but it was still the same (2000.80.760.0). It should have been 8.00.2039
I am not sure what am I missing. All I want to do is update the MSDE Service Pack on our company machines to SP4.

SYNTAX Used is : setup.exe /upgradesp sqlrun INSTANCENAME= SECURITYMODE=SQL UPGRADEUSER=sa UPGRADEPWD=MyPwd BLANKSAPWD=1 /L*v D:MSDE.log
Please note that I am using BLANKSAPWD=1 because BUILTINAdministrators right is not present, the above syntax is working for one named instance but is failing in second named instance.
Himy first post in the data access forums, I really hope, someone can enlighten me here...I have a windows server 2003 running with 15 MSDE instances. No I would like to upgrade to SQL Server 2000 without crashing the existing instances... My perfect scenario woudl be- install sql server as new instance- move existing databases via detach / attach to the new instanceWill that work?
Does anyone know of a resource that describes the steps to upgrade an instance of MSDE(2000) to SQL 2005 Standard?
We found something on a MS site that indirectly indicated you could upgrade the MSDE to SQL Express and then upgrade Express to the full version of 2005, but that method created quite a bit of problems(System databases), which we were not able to resolve short of uninstalling MSDE and the apps and installing SQL 2005 and re-installing the apps; but I have to believe there is a better way.
I am creating an install for our product and as part of the changes I am making, I want to upgrade a user's DB engine, if they are still using MSDE 1.0, to SQL Express 2005.
The upgrade path we have chosen is the following.....
MSDE 1.0 --> MSDE 1.0 sp4 --> SQL Express 2005
I believe this should work, yes? Anywho, I am trying to run a "passive" install of SQL Express and I am using the following parameter list:
I am having issues trying to do an in place upgrade of msde 2000 to sql express 2005. When I try to upgrade it bombs when it reaches "Running action to shutdown instance(Run As Normal User)" with the following error: Service 'computername' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386). I've tried an upgrade on a clean test machine, and it goes through without any problems. I am logged into an account with local admin permissions. If any one has any ideas, they would be appreciated.
at the moment I have the following problem: We have installed a version of the MSDE 2000 Sp3 with our software since 2005. Now we install SQL Server Express 2005 in order to use the latest version and to be compatible with Vista. We have never had any problems with the MSDE, so it was no problem that we installed the german version (by mistake) because there never was any output at installation time. When we now upgrade the existing MSDE installing the new version of our software, there are often problems and there are error messages, unfortunately in german, which cannot be read by most of our international users.
The problem is, that there seems to be no possibility to upgrade the existing (german) MSDE with the english version of SQL Server Express 2005. My question is, if it is possible to upgrade the german MSDE to the english SQL Server 2005 to enable our international users to read the error messages at installation time in english?
Trying to update my local developer version of SQL Server 2005 SP1 to SP2. The setup program terminates with the following information dumped from the logs. Not sure if it is related, but I recently installed the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (tools, runtime, etc) on the same development machine. It is a little too deep for me to figure out

I've had a workstation running Windows NT 4.0 and SQL 7.0 successfully and this has just been upgraded to Windows 2000. Althogh the s/w is still on disc in the correct plance, SQL Server is no longer in the Program group from the Start menu, the SQL Server servicess aren't visible in Service Manager and the SQL Enterprise Manager icon in the folder produces an MMC error I don't recocnise or understand - Help ! What's happened where and does anyone know how I resolve this
I have a request from one of our researchers to upgrade to CTP SP2. I am getting the error message:
MSP Error: 29506 SQL Server Setup failed to modify security permissions on file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData for user Administrator. To proceed, verify that the account and domain running SQL Server Setup exist, that the account running SQL Server Setup has administrator privileges, and that exists on the destination drive.
I added serveradministrators - full control to the permissions of Data, but it still does not work.
Has anyone else ran into this, and how do I fix it?
We are in the process of going through all test steps for upgrading one of our servers with SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. Currently Server 2000, which we will be upgrading as well after SQL is upgraded and running properly. We have Reporting Services installed as well. I am using a test server which is an exact mirrored image of the live server but is not added to the domain.
I am going through the steps of selecting the components, selecting the instance, and then selecting the installed components I want to upgrade (SQL Server 8.0.??? and Reporting Services 8.0.???) and click next.
The upgrade analysis begins. Everything is ok through the SQL Server analysis but when I click next to start the upgrade analysis on Reporting Services I get this error message, "SQL Server Setup requires administrator permissions for the upgraded SQL Server instance. To continue, log in with an administrator account." I am logged in as the local admin which should have the required permissions to upgrade Reporting Services, plus the local admin was ok for the SQL Server upgrade anaylis
I have no idea what could be causing this permissions issue. I did run the SQL 2005 Updrade Analyzer utility and performed all the "before" steps. What could be the issue?
[Background] Upgraded SQL Server Express to Advanced and I started getting a user instance error. I followed the advice on some posts (most notably: http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/). I deleted the User Template Data as the instructions say but now get the error below when trying to run my application. I've tried setting User Instance = False with no luck. Also noticed after rebooting that the Template Data file was recreated but the folder is empty. Have tried re-installing the update but it says there's nothing to update! Has anyone else had this problem? Any fixes? Any help will be greatly appreciated...
Many thanx, Milt

It seems like the upgrade tries to use Windows authentification although I've told it to use SQL Server authentification. Or did I miss a parameter in my command line?
If I do the upgrade manually it works without needing Windows authentification.
I upgraded a SQL 2000 installation to SQL 2005 this past weekend. Minimal issues overall, but one that did crop up relates to a linked server to an Oracle database. The linked server worked before the upgrade, and stopped working immediately after.
We're running on Windows 2003 x64, latest service pack. The linked server is set up using the MSDAORA provider. The error I'm getting post-upgrade is:
=====================
OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "PROD" returned message "ORA-06413: Connection not open.".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure RDM_GET_REP_LIST_SP, Line 12
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "PROD".

A tnsping from the server works fine. I've also tried recreating the linked server. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know what other information would be useful.

I keepo getting the following error while setting up MSDE: Setup failed to configure the server.Refer to server error logs and setup error logs for more information. Any ideas?
I am trying to connect to a remote MSDE SQL database. When I set up the odbc connection I get a connection denied error. The SQL server is on a windows 2003 server. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
I am attempting to upgrade a 2005 Standard Edtion to Enterprise Edition. This is a default instance. All components are upgraded successfully except the Database Engine. I receive the following error:
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]The certificate cannot be dropped because one or more entities are either signed or encrypted using it.. To continue, correct the problem, and then run SQL Server Setup again.
This installation does not have encryption enabled, so I do not undersand the error or how to correct it.
After rebooting the SQL instance appears to be upgraded to Enterprise, but it cannot be upgraded to SP2.
We are thinking of deploying MSDE for a modest traffic Intranet. According to this http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/howtobuy/msdeuse.asp 25 concurrent users should be fine.
What exception would we get if the MSDE was not handling the traffic?
What would be the best way to track/log how close we are getting to the 25 user max.
But it gets through the install, then the progress bar goes backwards and it uninstalled, I tried to enable logging and do /q+ but none of this gives usable information, i have redownloaded the MSDE SP3 install files and this has changed nothing, I know this is a common problem as I have seen a few sites mention it, but i can't seem to find the fix.
REBOOTED AND sql SERVER iCON APPEARS on the lower desktop Icon bar, open it and it says: Server: JOHN Servises: SQL Server Running \JOHN - MSSQLServer
opened a command prompt at c: and entered osql -S JOHN -U sa -P password and got the 1> reply on the next line
I typed EXIT
I had downloaded two scripts that create Pubs and Northwind SQL databases. I put them in the C: folder
I Typed at c:osql -E -i instpubs.sql
It created the pubs SQL database for me
I Typed at c:osql -E -i instnwinds.sql
It created the nwinds SQL database for me
I closed the command prompt and went to the Administrator Tools in the Control Panel I selected Data OLEDB Selected ADD entered Pubs and used default values for Pubs to create a connection Tested it OK
Then went and ran Visual Studio Net 2003 Checked to see if the pubs and northwind SQL databases where present in the Server Explorer drop down window. I seleced the connect to database Icon and in it's Data Link Properties I entered JOHN for server name pubs for selected database on the server with Provider as MS OLEDB for SQL Service the Icon changed to connected.
I entered this in the code for page_load
Dim MyDS As New DataSet Dim ConnStr As String Dim SQL As String ConnStr = "server=(local)C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLData;database=pubs;Trusted_Connection=yes"
SQL = "SELECT * FROM Titles " & _ "SELECT * FROM Publishers" Dim MySqlConn As New SqlConnection(ConnStr) Dim MySqlAdapter As New SqlDataAdapter(SQL, ConnStr)
'The SqlDataAdapter will automatically open and 'close the SqlConnection MySqlAdapter.Fill(MyDS)
But I can not get this to work it errors out on line:
and get this error: [SqlException (0x80131904): Shared Memory Provider: The system cannot find the file specified. ] System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionPool.GetConnection(Object owningObject) +317
I've tried so many combination with and without user and password, I just don't get it, spent three long days stuck here, can someone help me out.
Note: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLData Is the accual location on my machine that pubs database is located.
I can use the pubs SQL database in Web Matrix OK. Thanks pdqjohnny@hotmail.com
The only google hit on Internal Error 2737 was a message archived here with no solution posted. I found that updating IE to 6.0 SP1 solved the Internal Error 2737, although I'm still not quite getting MSDE 2000 to run under Windows 98 First Edition. The Installer now installs without error, but the server manager doesn't turn the little SQL Server system tray icon green, the server doesn't seem to start up.
I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters. I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a long news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is "text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test, I simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still recevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.
I'm trying to attach a MSDE 2000 database to SQL Server 2005 Express.
I simply issue sp_detach_db XXX where XXX is the name of my MSDE database. Then sp_attach_db or create database ... with attach and both way gets the following message:
Event ID. : 3415
Description: Database 'XXX' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
I am trying to restore a database backed up using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition to a server using MSDE. I get an error 3205 "Too many backup devices specified...64 max..."
I am trying to change the computer name of a machine running MSDE but I get an error when SQL Server starts. With regular SQL when I change the name of a computer I re-run setup and setup fixes this problem. MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem.
My question is "How do I change the name of a computer running MSDE with out reinstalling MSDE"
We currently have the problem, that all our machines are produced with the same name and afterwards the name is changed. So we have the problem that the checksum key for the MSDE isn't valid anymore. As MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem. Does anyone know a solution for this problem ?? A program recalculating the cheksum ??
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this this question but I'll give it a shot.
The only db development that I have ever done is in MS Access. I have a project at work that is being accomplished in VB and I need a db engine to use as the back end. Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?
