Errors Installing MSDE Desktop
Nov 7, 2004
HELP! this is driving me mad!!
I installed MSDE desktop with no problems... months later when creating a database, I stupidily forgot the "sa" password that I set during setup... So I decided to unistall MSDE and reinstall it, this time documenting the username and password... BUT now it is giving me errors which I am unable to solve... is there anyone out there that might be able to help me??
I go to a command-line, locate the directory where the install program lives and type in "setup SAPWD=(a password) SecurityMode=SQL" and it returns the follow error message:
"Setup Failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error logs"
My problem is I don't know where to locate these error logs. Please if anyone can help me with this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
thanks, Donald - email = pizzazzz@cox.net

I have installed Sql 7.0 desktop edition on Win 98 with IE5 and am having a problem starting the Sql server.
It auto registered the server under my machine name. It was returning a network connection error so I deleted it and tried to add one with the name (local). Enterprise Manager then returned an error saying one was already registered under that name.
Anyideas?
Thanks

Dear all,
This week I was told to setup MSDE Desktop Engine on my pc bcz my Access back end db is getting bigger in size. And as a little advance step, I decided to put my Access back end on SQL server.
To be frank, I have no experience with SQL server but after reading the instructions, I have installed MSDE (latest version) on my pc successfully. A small icon of SQL server appeared nearby clock icon of my pc showing the SQL server is running on ASHFAQUEPC.
I shifted a Trial db onto this server in following way.
Considering the opened Trial db would be my BE, from the Tools---Database Utility---Upsize wizard, I followed below steps according to Upsize wizard.
1.I selected ‘Local’ server and check marked to ’Use Trusted Connection’.
2.And then I selected some tables to export
3.Kept all default attributes of db as it is
4.Selected ‘Let the wizard decide’ under data option to include.
5.At the next step ‘What application change do you want to make?
a.Create a new Access client/Server application.
b.Link SQL Server tables to existing application.
c.No application changes. (I selected this option)
Then it showed me the report of my db description of changes that were made after deploying it. The report I did not print bcz it was a trial db with one table (2 fields) and a simple query.
My idea was to connect my Trial BE with another one of another Access mdb file so FE would be Access and BE would be from MSDE.
1.Now I don’t know how to link my BE to my FE?
2.From where I can directly see my BE? Because SQL Server Service Manager does
not have any menu?
3.Where I was wrong in following steps?
Guidance in this regards is highly appreciated.
With kind regards,
Ashfaque

Hi,
Does anyone know if it's at all possible to install SQL Server Express 2005 over a Remote Desktop on a Windows XP machine.
I know there are problems running SQL over Remote Desktop, in that it won't start up a User Instance, but I wasn't sure if we can install over Remote Desktop.
If it's not possible, can anyone point me to an official document stating this fact?
Thanks

What can I do about this? There doesn't seem to be any workaround, I've upgraded everything, including the Msiexec to 3.2 (v2), but the same error always pops up.
I've done other installs of the same product without any problem whatsoever.
Can anyone help?

I have a W98 machine that has MSDE 2000 installed. I am trying to install SP1 and have run into many errors. They are:
1) If I try to install the Sql2KDesksp1 version I can open the downloaded package but when I try to run Setup, I get a "Can't open package" error.
2) If I try to run the Sql2ksp1 version. It begins the install and then errors out with the message "MSSQLServer is not an instance of SQL Server".
I have unistalled MSDE and re-installed with no change in errors.
As much as I loathe W98 I need to get this to work... any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I am running Windows XP Pro. When trying to install MSDE, sql2ksp3, i go to the command line and enter:
setup SAPWD=somegreatpassword SECURITYMODE=SQL and off it goes, gathering information and starting to install.
After a short period of time where the status bar shows about 9 seconds left the status bar runs backwards down to zero and installation stops.
No error message, no crashes, just packs up its tent and goes away.
I have tried running setup from a batch file with the same results.
I have turned off my antivirus program as well as all other programs.
Need Input! - Thanks - T.C.

When I open the Command Prompt, it defaults into my documents and setting - I can't get a C: prompt. My login is the Admin and the old Administrator account isn't listed anywhere on my computer. Am I screwed? Do I have to reinstall XP and have the seperate Admin account? Please help.

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.
I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).
When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:
"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."
Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?
I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

Hi, I am trying to teach myself ASP.NET from the SAMS 24 Hrs book and I am trying to install MSDE for use with the web matrix project.
I think I succesfully installed it the first time I tried but entered a four digit SAPWD password not knowing it needed to be strong. I clicked on the data tab in the web matrix project as instructed to open the database and entered my user and password but it gave me some error message.
Now when I click the data tab it say I need to install MSDE on my computer and links me to www.asp.net.
Then when I try to install MSDE after it has downloaded, it gives me this error message. ----- 'Setup failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error logs for more information.'---
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything as well as everything else I can think of.
I would be forever grateful if someone could help me out with this.
Many Thanks
Mark

I've running MSDE on a win xp box with SP2. The SQL server service manager indicates that the SQL server is running. I'm using Visual Studio 2003. According to the install page for 101 VB and C# Code Samples I should install the .NET frameword samples db.. See http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=08E3D5F8-033D-420B-A3B1-3074505C03F3&displaylang=en
I cd to the appropriate dir and run osql -E -S (local)NetSDK -i InstNwnd.sql (the cmd given on the page noted above). I get the following error:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:Documents and SettingsPhilip Toews>cd C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Stud
io .NET 2003SDKv1.1SamplesSetup
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio .NET 2003SDKv1.1SamplesSetup>osql -
E -S (local)NetSDK -i InstNwnd.sql
[DBMSLPCN]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
[DBMSLPCN]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio .NET 2003SDKv1.1SamplesSetup>
I'm a newbie to .NET and SQL server so this makes no sense to me. If the SQL server service manager indicates that the SQL server is running why do I get that error and what is the work around?
Thanks .NET great ones for helping a newbie get off the ground...

Sorry if this seems to be very basic question. But after 5 hours I am thinking may be I am missing something.
I had always setup the dbs in server environment and I had never any issues but on my new Vaio Laptop with XP. Last time it was rather easy and I can not remember such issues. I downloaded (MSDE 2000) Release A from Microsoft and setting it up.
I set it up with the with the same parameters using an .ini file, I used Notepad to create a file named MyParameters.ini with these contents:
[Options]
INSTANCENAME="MSSQL"
TARGETDIR="D:MSDE"
SECURITYMODE=SQL
Then run Setup using the /settings switch to point to the .ini file:
setup /settings "MyParameters.ini" SAPWD="MyStrongPassword"
I find that my Visual studio is showing the instance at "Vaio/MSSQL" where Vaio is my Laptop. The setup created a folder in D:MSDEMSSQL$MSSQL and not in the target directory MSDE!!
Also my enterprise manager can not find it at all.
Also In visual studio I dont seem to be able to connect using my sa_password.
Any help is very much appreciated.
