Event Notifications Don't Fire When Raised By Activated Procedure

Oct 23, 2006

I have an activated SP that is issuing PRINT statements.

These are raised as ErrorLog and EventLog events when using SQLProfiler

However if you attach an event notification for ERRORLOG and EVENTLOG, nothing appears in the queue. Any other ERRORLOG or EVENTLOG event caught by profiler is caught by the event notification as expected.

Proper Use Of Event Notifications

Apr 19, 2006

Hi.

I'm developing an app that uses Service Broker queues to allow a customer to create "events" that fire using a timer or a query notification. When these events fire, a message is sent to a Service Broker queue for processing. Because there is much managed code involved in processing these messages, I decided to use the External Activator application and an Event Notification to process these messages. My question is "what is the difference between using the External Activator application to launch another application (which simply RECEIVEs a message from the target queue and processes it) and creating a windows service that simply monitors the target queue (with a WAITFOR = -1 clause) and processes it?"

I guess I'm not sure how using the QUEUE_ACTIVATION Event Notification is really helping me.

Thanks,

Chris

Should SqlDataSource Selected Event Always Fire?

May 2, 2007

Hi
 In the page load of my webpage I call a databind for a gridview.
It generally calls this event handler :
protected void SqlDataSource1_Selected(object sender, SqlDataSourceStatusEventArgs e)

However sometimes (seemingly randomly) it doesn't.
Any ideas?
Thanks

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
...
if (searchText != "")
    SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["search"].DefaultValue = searchText;
else{
SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters["search"].DefaultValue = "";
GridView1.DataBind();

OnError And OnTaskFailed Can Not Fire Event

Apr 15, 2008

I have a package which have two sequence container, first container is used to transfer data to a staging area and second sequence container is used to transfer to destination from that staging area. And I also apply transaction required to second sequence container.
There are several execute sql tasks and several data flow tasks inside two sequence container.
first sequence container( 1.execution sql task-> 2.data flow ->3.execution sql task) ->
second sequence container(4.execution sql task-> 5.execution sql task-> 6.data flow-> 7.data flow -> 8.execution sql task-> 9.data flow...)

I create ExecutionLog table which is used to log status for this package on our sql server. First this status field is null, then during this package run , it change to 'in process', and after this package finished, it change to 'success' or 'failure' depending this package can run successfully or not.
This package can be run only if status is 'success' ,'failure' or null. So I need to change this status field during package execution.
For updating package to failure, I need to add event handler to change that status using execute sql task.

First time I perform to execute sql task on onError event handler tab (this event handler is applyed on package level ) .
And for testing envent handler I use old schema version to make sure I get failure for '8 execution sql task'.
But package seems to get stuck at '8 execution sql task' inside second sequence container( always yellow when I run from ssis) and never fire envent handler. '8 execution sql task' is used to update related table.

Second time I remove onError envent handler and change to use on onTaskFailed event handler tab (this event handler is applyed on package level ) .
But everything is the same as using onError event handler except I got error output but still can not fire event.
Why '8.execution sql task' can not fire onError or onTaskFailed?
For this case what kind of event handler I need to use, what kind of level I need to apply for this event handler.

Event Notifications: Insufficient System Memory

Feb 20, 2008

I'm looking for a sanity check. Service broker and Event Notifications are new to me, so it is possible I'm either abusing or incorrectly using the technology. I'm experimenting with using Event Notifications and Server Broker to log error messages. The process works pretty well as long as I don't do something stupid such as stressing the process by calling raiserror in a loop of a 100000 - twice. It processed for a while, but eventual either SQL Server terminates (sev 25) or I had to force the SQL service to stop by killing it's process via task manager. I could not connect to SQL Server or stop the service normally.

I have several general questions. I think they are good questions. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

1) I'm looking into generating deadlock and blocking email alerts. It appears that Event Notification is the way to go since there are very few events and I can respond to the event with an email. Is there a better method to automate blocking and deadlock email alerts that include event details?

2) If I wanted to retain some history of errors for the developers, should Event Notifications be avoided if a high number of errors can be generated by a badly formed T-SQL? Avoid TRC_ERRORS_AND_WARNINGS and USER_ERROR_MESSAGE? (I could tell the developers not to be stupid, but why would that stop them if it does not stop me?)

3) Is there a way to efficiently filter a Event Notification from entering the queue before the Receive statement is called? I get some events that I throw away after receiving them. For example, perhaps I want all events from all non-system databases without having to add a notification for each single non-system database. Or I want all errors with severity 11-17 only?

4) Is there a trick to filter out events from the procedure activated by the event. I tried using raiserror to debug a procedure without thinking. The result was that the queue never was empty because the processing produced more events to process. As a result, I don't use raiserror and use a try-catch to avoid raising errors in the procedure activated.

5) I can receive one message at a time using local variables or receive a batch of messages using a local table. Is a small batch the best way even if there is memory pressure?

6) In the activated procedure I continue processing in a loop until there are no more messages. This seems to be the most efficient. Is this always the case? Should I exit the procedure after a set number (large) of messages have been received? The procedure would activate again to continue processing?

7) Is there any point to using the MAX_QUEUE_READERS setting when processing event notifications? Should it be 1?

8) I currently get the next conversation group id and process its messages within a transaction. Is this a bad idea with event notifications? Should I just call Receive and get the next batch? I don't really care if I lose some messages if things are going badly. Should I avoid wrapping the receive in a transaction?

9) I could run a trace that starts with SQL Server; however, I think my only choice is to log to a file. Is there a way to trace to a table using SQLTrace without running profiler? I would like to automate the process and have the data in a table so that it can be easily queried and parsed for each database/team.

10) Is there a way to fix my process and handle 100000 messages a minute? Is there a way to skip messages when it gets to busy? Can the query generating the messages get throttled - perhaps along with the query designer - before the server gets into trouble? Query the memory used by a queue and drop/create the queue with a delay if there is an issue?

I'm using a single CPU test machine with only 1 GB and 2 GB pagefile and a single disk. OS: Windows 2003 R2 SP2. SQL: 9.0.3054 and on 9.0.3228 (update package 6 just came out today). I could add memory, but I think that would just permit me to queue more message before running into trouble.
I'll add code shortly - length limit.

Will OnError Event Fire If I Use Try/Catch In Script Task?

Feb 4, 2008

Greetings,

We have a package that runs on 3 servers, all based in different countries and time zones. Each package does logging to a common SQL Server based in New York. (We log to the same server to make monitoring of the package run results easier.) We expect that our overseas servers will occassionally fail to make a database connection and have coded a Try/Catch block in our Script task to ignore errors that occur when attempting the SQL Server logging.

The problem is that the OnError event handler defined at the package level is being called whenever a server fails to make a database connection. The Catch block appears to not be called at all. I've included below the short method that does the SQL Server logging. The "Dts.Log" line logs to a SQL Server and usually works. However, when it fails, the "WriteEventLogEntry" method is supposed to be called to write an error to the server's event log. (I haven't included the "WriteEventLogEntry" code but it works fine when called elsewhere in the package to do our non-error event logging.)

Public Sub WriteSqlServerLogEntry(ByVal logMessage As String, ByVal dataCode As Integer, ByVal dataBytes() As Byte, ByVal rowsInserted As Integer)

Try

Dts.Log(logMessage, dataCode, dataBytes)

Catch ex As Exception

WriteEventLogEntry("An exception was thrown while attempting to log the following message to the SQL Server provider: " + logMessage, EventLogEntryType.Error, rowsInserted)

End Try

End Sub

Shouldn't a Catch block prevent the OnError event from being raised? How can I change my package to ignore all errors that occur when attempting SQL Server logging?

Gracias!

BCB

Why Does The Condition Activated = Isnull(@activated, -1) Work?

Jul 16, 2005

I have a stored procedure into which a bit type of parameter called '@activated' is being passed. This stored procedure gets all the users matching the condition :
Activated = isnull(@activated, -1)

In users table, one of the columns is 'Activated' of bit type.
The strange thing happening here is that if @activated is null, then the above condition is true for all rows in users table, even though we know that the column Activation  is either 1 or 0 only and never -1.Can someone explain why this strange thing is happening?

Cannot Debug Activated CLR Stored Procedure

Jan 11, 2007

Hi

I'm having a problem debugging (with VS2005,) a CLR Stored Procedure which is activated on a queue. I know it is working because it is consuming and processing messages when one appears in the queue.

I can debug it 'manually' by either right-clicking on the SP within VS2005 and selecting 'Step into Stored Procedure' or by attaching to the SQL Server Management Studio process, setting a breakpoint and executing the stored procedure from a Management Studio query window.

However, if I send a message to my queue within Management Studio, my breakpoints are NOT being hit within VS2005, but the message IS reaching my queue and it IS being processed by the SP.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Set New_broker When The Activated Stored Procedure Changes.

Sep 4, 2007

Hi I have a couple of questions to understand better Service Broker..

Every time I alter the activation Stored Procedure on the receiving queue I also execute the:
alter database set new_broker rollback

1) can somebody explain me in a detailed way why I have to do that? what happen inside SQL Server when there is a Stored Procedure activated on a queue??
Also link to white papers, resouces on so on are appreciated.

My Activation Stored Procedure calls other stored procedure.
2) If ONLY one of the nested stored procedures changes I have to execute the command:
alter database set new_broker rollback ???

I think that the answer to the first question will answer the second one..

Thank you for any helps!

Ending A Conversation In A CLR Activated Stored Procedure

Apr 26, 2006

I've read Remus' article on Fire and Forget tactics when it comes to ending conversations, and I have to admit I am guilty of sending a message to a service and immediately ending the conversation. I've set up a stored procedure to end the conversation on the initiator queue, but I'm guessing it's never being fired because I am not ending the conversation in the target activated stored proc, which is a CLR stored proc.

Can you tell me how to end the conversation from a CLR stored proc?

Now that I think of it none of the code I use in my TSQL activated stored procs to handle different message types and error-checking is done in the CLR stored proc.

Thanks

Activated Stores Procedure And Batch Processing

Aug 2, 2006

Hi There

2 Questions :

1. Almost in every SB example you will see this sql :

BEGIN TRANSACTION

WAITFOR (

RECEIVE TOP (1)

@MessageType = message_type_name,

@Message = message_body

FROM [Queue1]

WHERE conversation_handle = @ConversationHandle

), timeout 5000;

If this sql in an activated sp do you really have to have the waitfor ? Since the sp will only be fired if there is a message on the queue ?

2. It is reccomended that for high volume SB apps you do not do a top(1) receive but process batches. Exactly what is the best practice to do this. Receive a batch into a table variable and then what ? Process through it with a cursor ? That is not very efficient either, i would just like some insight into batch queue processing as everywhere i have seen uses top (1) from the queue ?

Thanx

Service Broker Activated Procedure Getting Deadlock While Running Mulitple Queue_reader Threads

Mar 7, 2008

Hi,

I am getting deadlock on activated procedure which I am using to receive message from the Service Broker Queue.

Deadlock details:

Two threads are tring to do delete on internal table queue_messages_122847900 ends up in a dead lock.

Activated procedure code

RECEIVE TOP(1) @xmlMessage = message_body,
@handle = conversation_handle,
@message_type = message_type_name
FROM TransactionQueue;

IF (@message_type = 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/EndDialog')
BEGIN
END CONVERSATION @handle;
RETURN 0
END
.........................
.........................
After this I do process the message and some other processing

And then

END CONVERSATION @handle;

Note I do have single conversation group

Is their a problem in the way I am receiving and processing messages. Is it possible because of the delay between RECEIVE and END CONVERSATION same message is read by two different threads.

Thanks

Receiving Queue Does Not Fire Stored Procedure

Jul 3, 2007

I am doing my first SSB application where two different servers send messages to each other. The logic was all previously tested on a single server between two databases and it worked OK.

The problem I am having is that when the message is received at the target server (I see this in profiler), the stored procedure associated with the queue does not fire.

I see an acknowledgment fire back to the initiator, but it is like the target server does nothing with the initial message.

Any ideas on how I can further troubleshoot this? FWIW, I used the setup tool provided by RemusResanu to set up the routes and service bindings.

Thanks for any help!

Conversation Handle Processed By An Activated Stored Procedure Service Can Not Be Invoked By A CLR Service Instance?

Dec 1, 2006

I have a initiator and a target service broker peer.

Both are controlled by a C# unit test. The initiator uses the Microsoft.Samples.SqlServer class. The target service uses stored procedure activation.

Sending a message from the initiator to the target, saves the content of the message, along with its conversation handle in the target's database specific table.

The unit test needs - at a later time - to instruct the target to send a message back on the same conversation handle to the initiator service.

For this the C# unit test creates a Conversation off of the saved conversation handle:

Service client = new Service("cleintservicename", conn, tran);

Conversation dialog = null;

dialog = new Conversation(client, convHandle);
Sending the message on this dialog generates an error "Message body: <Error xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error"><Code>-8495</Code><Description>The conversation has already been acknowledged by another instance of this service.</Description></Error>".
Is the error due to the fact that a service - using the activated stored procedure already picked up the conversation, so that a new reference to the service can not be created through the Service class in CLR?
If so, I might need then to skip the activated stored procedure in favor or a CLR service, alltogether?
Any help - greatly appreciated.
