Excel Import TEXT 9760020 Imports 9.76002e+006
Sep 12, 2007
Hello,
I have a problem with the Import of an Excel file and hope one of you can help me out.
There is a column with mixed data (format is TEXT) in an excel file and I want to import it as Text (DT_WSTR (255)).
So far everything works fine but some fields like "9760020" imports "9.76002e+006".
My settings so far are:
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=<FileName>;Extended Properties="EXCEL 8.0;HDR=NO;IMEX=1"
In addition I altered the registry entry
TypeGuessRows to 0 (ImportMixedType = Text)
Has someone got a solution?
Thankx

Like the title says.. I am trying to import an Excel 2000 spreadsheet to SQL Server to do some manipulations/aggregations. The Excel file has several cells with long text (detailed product descriptions) in them. Since this is a quick Import/Export I am using the Wizard rather than the SSIS Designer. I specify the value of the field as being varchar(max), and this is confirmed by the Edit SQL button. However, every time I try to run it I get an error on the Details column, stating that "Text was truncated". I have tried changing it from varchar(max) to text (and also tried nvarchar(max) and ntext) but still get the same error. What the heck am I doing wrong? I cannot just get rid of the column in question because we need its contents. Is this some issue with Excel and not SQL Server? If so, is there any way to fix it?

Hi everyone,
I've got an excel file that I want to import into a database table.
The longest text in a cell is 385 characters.
I've made the fields in the table nvarchar(1024).
I created a data flow task for the import.
When I run this task, I get the following error:
[Excel Source [1]] Error: There was an error with output column "Line Text" (52) on output "Excel Source Output" (9). The column status returned was: "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".
[Excel Source [1]] Error: The "output column "Line Text" (52)" failed because truncation occurred, and the truncation row disposition on "output column "Line Text" (52)" specifies failure on truncation. A truncation error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.
is it possible that there is a restriction on the length of the text ?
regards,
Filip

Hi there,
I use Asp.Net Application to upload a Excel file and then a DTS to import data from the file to the SQL2000 and finally to display the read data on the screen.
The DTS starts with setting some variables with the help of Dynamic properties.
On Succes.
DTS rum 2 simultaneous Transform Data task importing data from excel to SQL2000.
This works fine for "most" of the time, but then there are the other times.
One of the TDT(Transform Data task) reads nothing from the excel file. but it can read the data if i upload the same file again right after.
Any kind of input is welcome
Thanx

hours wasted what else is new with Micro --- crap try to import an excel into a table, longest field (via vba macro report) is 278 receiving DB field is 4000 get "Truncation error, I must stop I am a piece of s*** program " the only thing you can find on the web is make sure you have SQL server 2005 SP2 install it same thing and g** only knows what other problems I have just created by installing another piece of Microsoft magic generated in India or China by the best technologists making at least $5 and hour
so MVPs when is this rediculous situation going to be fixed ?? oh that's right your answer will be "go to VISTA" which won't fix my problem but will probably help your stock situation
MS owes me (conservatively) 100K ... my current plan is to install Linux get up on MySQL and NEVER deal with SHoddy half built pieces of garbage again
so where is the fix ???
when will we see it (short of buying another bloated piece of ... oh i mean Vista)
an addendum
i am trying to import 25,000 rows with approx 20 columns from Excel
i added a first column with an ID .... if I import whole table it dies on row 1852 for truncation problems
if I empty that column all goes in make other exel get rid of all rows except ID and bad row (contains web addresses eg http://www. blah blah)
import that excel it dies on row 2395 in other words the first offending cell was no problem if it was the 2cnd row instead of the 15th row
try to tell me this is not a random bug .... long live MYSQL

I have an .xlsx file where I need to import the data into a table. If there is not a way to do this, is there a way to import either a tab del file or different type of .csv file into the database?
Do not want to use the SSIS or import feature from SQL2008 as I tried to save the steps and running it wont work either.

(Applies to SQLServer 2005 SP1)
We have found that using the SSIS "Import and Export Wizard" using the "Microsoft Excel" data source that there appears to be a maximum column length of 255 characters for any row.
Even when defining the destination table columns as nvarchar(4000), the wizard fails with the errors shown below.
We have found no workaround except manually changing the imput data. There doesn't appear to be any "Advanced" options for the Excel importer as there are for the flat-text importer. So, no question here, just posting the bug so that *next* time someone searches the web for an answer, this post comes up
MessagesError 0xc020901c: Data Flow Task: There was an error with output column "English String" (18) on output "Excel Source Output" (9). The column status returned was: "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.". (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc020902a: Data Flow Task: The "output column "English String" (18)" failed because truncation occurred, and the truncation row disposition on "output column "English String" (18)" specifies failure on truncation. A truncation error occurred on the specified object of the specified component. (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc0047038: Data Flow Task: The PrimeOutput method on component "Source - Sheet1$" (1) returned error code 0xC020902A. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing. (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc0047021: Data Flow Task: Thread "SourceThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0047038. (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc0047039: Data Flow Task: Thread "WorkThread0" received a shutdown signal and is terminating. (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) Error 0xc0047021: Data Flow Task: Thread "WorkThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0047039. (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)
edit: After searching further this is documented under "Excel Source"
in BOL which provides a registry-based workaround. I guess the issue
is that the wizard considers truncation to be a 'fail' case and
there's no easy way to override this behaviour, specify the column
types nor determine which line is in error)
Truncated text. When the driver determines that an Excel column contains
text data, the driver selects the data type (string or memo) based on the
longest value that it samples. If the driver does not discover any values longer
than 255 characters in the rows that it samples, it treats the column as a
255-character string column instead of a memo column. Therefore, values longer
than 255 characters may be truncated. To import data from a memo column without
truncation, you must make sure that the memo column in at least one of the
sampled rows contains a value longer than 255 characters, or you must increase
the number of rows sampled by the driver to include such a row. You can increase
the number of rows sampled by increasing the value of TypeGuessRows under
the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftJet4.0EnginesExcel registry
key.

Hi,
Our company wants to allow our customers the ability to import employee data. Each customer's employee data changes depending on things like organisation structure etc. so the format of the data to be imported needs to change. We can do a lot of this with dynamic SQL, but are looking at moving it to SSIS as we think it will save us a lot of pain later on and for other features in SSIS.
We're stuck at a fairly early part of the process as we don't know how to dynamically import our spreadsheet. So far our best idea is to connect to the excel connection as the only step in the data task and then to use a script task on the control task, write code to connect to the excel source (set the excel source to not treat the first row as headers so we can do a 'select top 1 *...' ) then create a dynamic sql command to create the table.
Once this is done we would then have another data task that actually puts the data into the newly created table. This all sounds very difficult though. What are the options for doing what we want to do... have a feeling that we're missing something basic.
Any help appreciated,
TIA, Anthony.

How can I address that issue? (e.g. Where is this provider and how do I install it?)

While importing data from Excel source , some column is getting null value even though excel column has value.To Resolve the issue we tried with
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftOffice14.0Access Connectivity EngineEnginesExcel
1.Change the Value of the Row TypeGuessRows from 8 (Default value) to 0 and ImportMixedType = text
• xls
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftJet4.0EnginesExcel
1.Change the Value of the Row TypeGuessRows from 8 (Default value) to 0 and ImportMixedType = text
the connection string of the excel
UPPER(REVERSE(SUBSTRING( REVERSE(@[User::VarInputExcelFile]), 1, 5) ) ) == ".XLSX" ? "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=" + @[User::VarInputExcelFile] + ";Extended Properties="Excel 12.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=1";":"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data
Source=" + @[User::VarInputExcelFile] + ";Extended Properties="EXCEL 8.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=1";"
by doing the above setting also , the column is coming as null from excel source even though there is data in excel.

I'm importing a multi tab spreadsheet using Import wizard, which I understand to use the same internals as SSIS. The total number of columns in the spread sheet will be over 500. The import wizard defaults everything to varchar 255. I understand there is an XML file I can manipulate to change this and they are located
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server100DTSMappingFiles
Assuming one of these will control Excel defaults, which one is it? None of the names lend themselves to the Excel as a source. SqlClientToMSSql10?

I'm trying to write data to excel from an ssis component to a excel destination.
Even thought I'm writing numerics, every cell gets this error with a green tag:
Convert numbers stored as text to numbers
Excel Cells were all pre-formated to accounting 2 decimal, and if i manually type the exact data Im sending it formats just fine.
I'm hearing this a common problem -
On another project I was able to find a workaround for the web based version of excel, by writing this to the top of the file:
<style>.text { mso-number-format:@; } </style>
is there anything I can pre-set in excel (cells are already formated) or write to my file so that numerics are seen as numerics and not text.
Maybe some setting in my write drivers - using sql servers excel destination.
So close.. Thanks for any help or information.

Hi,
I am importing data from Excel to SQL Server. My Excel files are .html file format. Using ActiveX Script I am saving that file to xls file format as follows
Set myXL = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
Set myXLWorkBook = myXL.Workbooks.Open(filename)
Set myXLWorkSheet = myXL.ActiveSheet
myXLWorkBook.SaveAs filename, 43 '43-xlExcel9795
Set oPkg = DTSGlobalVariables.Parent
Set oConn = oPkg.Connections("Excel")
This script works fine but it prompts me that the file already exists do you want to replace it. How can I avoid this prompt
Secondly this file contains data like that
Col1 Col9 Col10
Row-1 Report Name
Row-2 From Date
Row-3 To Date
Location Count Amount
9999 1 100.00
9876 10 20.40
Where Row are the excel rows
The TransformData Task thinks that the Col 1 is of nvarchar(255) but after the tranfer all values in Col1 is NULL. How can I convert a nvarchar to Char or varchar
Here is ActiveX Script for Transformation
Function Main()
Dim Result
DTSDestination("Amount") = DTSSource("F10")
DTSDestination("Count = DTSSource("F9")
DTSDestination("StoreNumber") = DTSSource("ReportName")
Result = DTSTransformStat_OK
Main = Result
End Function

I've been asked to create an automated DTS import which is to take place each and every evening. The import routine is to import data into an SQL table from an Excel spreadsheet.
The spreadsheet is not massively complicated though is does contain formulas and calculations.
When using the DTS Wizard:
"Choose Data Sourse"
Data Source = Microsoft Excel 97-2000
I then browse to the file name.
"Choose Destination"
I select the Server name and Database to import into.
"Specify Table Copy or Query"
I select 'Use a query to specify the data transfer' then click Next.
I then click on the query builder and here's where I get stuck. The Source tables panel contains many rows and when expanded they all contain the same thing (field headings in the Excel spreadsheet).
I'm totally stuck here - can anyone help? :confused:

Hi,
I have to import Excel file to SQL Server 2005 using SSIS. I am having alot of problems and was wondering if it's no trouble if you could please instruct me how to proceed.
My scenario:
I have an excel file that contains a heading and then subheading such as
HEADING
Acc_g Acc_n
12 n_a2
13 n_b3
My database has a table called accounts with fields acc_g and acc_n.
I need to enter the values from the excel into the table. I tried doing it but SSIS also tries to insert the rows following the last line in excel and returns nulls and the table does't allow null values.
How can i resolve it?
Thanks

I am trying to import data from an excel spreadsheet. The file comes from a client and sometimes it may not have any data, that is, it will be blank. It seems that the Excel Source in SSIS does not like empty files, is there any way around this? I suppose I can check to see if it is empty and abort the import process but I am not sure how to do this. Any other ideas on how to get around this??

Hi, I'm building a web application in VB.NET 1.1 where users will upload Excel files at this webpage and the web application will transfer the data from the uploaded Excel file into MS SQL 2000. There are around 600-700 records and about 56 columns in the Excel file which is to be uploaded daily. There will be a few different files which I need to implement for as well.
I've sourced for and tried alot of methods. But either they can't satisfy my requirements or they just can't simply work.
- Most simple and direct way I've tried is creating a oledb connection to the Excel file in the following codes...
Function TestUploadData1(ByVal vFile As String) As String Dim Oleda As System.Data.OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter Dim Olecn As System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection Dim dt1 As DataTable
Olecn = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection( _ "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & _ "Data Source=" & vFile & ";" & _ "Extended Properties=Excel 8.0;HDR=Yes") Olecn.Open()
Dim ExcelCommand As New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand("SELECT INTO [ODBC;Driver={SQL Server};Server=(local);Database=dbSSC;Trusted_Conn ection=yes].[tblOutstanding] FROM [Report$];", Olecn) ExcelCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
Olecn.Close() End Function
But from the above codes I kept getting the error "Could not find installable ISAM." at the line Olecn.Open(). I've tried to set the registry to C:WindowsSystem32msexcl40.dll but to no avail...
- I've tried another method using the OpenRowSet in the following codes Function TestUploadData2(ByVal vFile As String) As String Dim cn As SqlConnection Dim cm As SqlCommand Dim strSQL As String cn = New SqlConnection("server=localhost; user ID=accessSSC; password=accessSSC541; database=dbSSC")
cn.Open()
strSQL = "INSERT INTO tblOutstanding SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0;Database=" & vFile & ";HDR=Yes','SELECT * FROM [Report$]')" cm = New SqlCommand(strSQL, cn) cm.ExecuteNonQuery()
cn.Close() End Function
For the above codes, I kept getting the error "Ad hoc access to OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' has been denied. You must access this provider through a linked server." at the line cm.ExecuteNonQuery() and I've tried to disable the Ad Hoc settings in the registry and tried to create a link server but to no avail as well...
- I've tried DTS but I'd need to DTS package to run whenever the users upload a file. Is there an easy way that I can run the designated DTS package to run through my .Net web application?
Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thanks & Regards, Keith Chang
