Excel: Client Safety Options Do Not Allow Pass Through Statement To Be Issued...
Jun 1, 2005
Hi.. My Finance user create a microsoft Excel OLAP file that connect to our SQL server. And I have created the same ODBC setting for every PCs.
But for a few PCs, I encountered the following error "Client Safety Options do not allow pass through statement to be issued to the data source" When trying to connect the OLAP file to SQL server after entering the same SQL account.
Any idea what is the isssue ??

I am trying to get the contents of the Excel Files dynamically and dumping into the SQL Database using SSIS. Through WMI Event Watcher, I could find when one or more Excel files dumped in a particular folder and using ForEach Loop Container I was able to take all the filenames and pass it through Variables. But at the same time in the Data Flow, I have to pass each Sheet of an Excel File to the Excel Source control and export the data to my SQL Database using OLEDB Destination.
For that I need to get the names of each sheets in an Excel File and pass it to the Excel Source Control through variables. But when I give Data Access Mode as "Table name or view name variable" and provide the variable name in that, then it is giving an error message as "A destination table name has not been provided".
And at the same time, Since I was not able to provide an static Filename (as I am passing through Variables), when I tried to map the columns in the OleDB Destination, it is not allowing me to map the columns.
So all these things I should do at Run-time using Variables in SSIS. I don't want to hard-code any filenames or Sheet names. If any one of you have a solution, please share with me.
Thanks & Regards,
Prakash Srinivasan

I am looking to generate batch reports in an excel format when data becomes available. I want those files in a shared directory and I want the ability to send them out via email. Formatting is very important. I cannot use SSRS because the spreadsheets need additional formatting that SSRS does not provide (naming of tabs, numbers formatted as numbers without "the number in the cell is formatted as text..." comment, etc.). I also need to get this done quickly.
SoftArtisans OfficeWriter seemed to have a solution that generating excel sheets on the server using datatags in cells. I saw another post on xlsgen (http://www.excelgenerator.com/). I am a little suprised there is no Microsoft solution. Is there one outside of installing Excel on the server?

I have this.
string strConn = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["MyConnectionString"].ConnectionString; string strQuery = "SELECT * FROM enews WHERE ((name_nws LIKE %'" + strSearch + "'%)"; SqlDataAdapter newsResultAdapter = new SqlDataAdapter(strQuery, strConn); //create a new dataset DataSet dsNewsSearch = new DataSet(); //populate the dataset with the "board_mtg_date" table from the database newsResultAdapter.Fill(dsNewsSearch, "enews"); //go through each rows in the dataset foreach (DataRow dr in dsNewsSearch.Tables[0].Rows) { int newsID = Convert.ToInt16(dr["id_nws"]); } I'm trying to pass a value to the Select statement with the variable "strSearch". It kept giving me error on this section.
The error is:

I am currently using @@Identity to retreive the Identity value for the PK field in a table that I am inserting data into. Essentially, my code looks like this:SqlCommand cmd=new SqlCommand("Insert into table(... ;Select @@Identity from table",conn);string identity=cmd.ExecuteScalar();Testing this myself, it works fine, but I am worried as to how thread safe this is in a real-world environment? (i.e. with multiple users clicking at it). Is there a guaranteed way to make this thread safe- wrap it in a transaction maybe?

We have a pair of SQL 2005 SP2 with Rollups clusters. We have a series of DB's that we are migrating from an existing SQL 2000 cluster. I have scripted the process, however on one of the test DB's, it goes to "In Recovery" as soon as I issue the Set Partner statement. There are other DB's on the same cluster mirrored with no problems. As we have a bunch of DB's to migrate, I want to figure out what would cause it to start a recovery. After the initial restores are done, it is in "Restoring" for a status so everything works up to that point.

I have a temp table that hosts data from a MDX query, I want to select a column from that table by passing in a parameter and then insert to a new table.
Here's the table structure, let's call it #temp
[Product].[Product Hierarchy].[level 03].[Member_CAPTION], [Measures].[Gross Sales]
Bike, 200
Accessory , 100
I have a table in the DB created as [ProductSales]
Here's what works for me:
insert into [ProductSales](Product, Sales)
Select convert(varchar(20), "[Product].[Product Hierarchy].[level 03].[Member_CAPTION]") as 'Product' , convert(decimal(18,2), [Measures].[Data]) as 'Sales'
From #temp
But in reality the product level is not always on level 03, I want to define a parameter @Product and pass it to the select list.
Here's what I tried to do:
Declare @Product varchar(500) = convert(varchar(20), "[Product].[Product Hierarchy].[level 01].[Member_CAPTION]")
Declare @SQL varchar(MAX)
SET @SQL='insert into [ProductSales](Product, Sales)
Select '+@Product+' as 'Product' , convert(decimal(18,2), [Measures].[Data]) as 'Sales'
From #temp'
Exec @SQL
But it threw me error, what is the right way to do it, is it because the double quote or single quote thing?

Hello!
I'm reading about database mirroring in High Safety Mode (Synchronous with no witness). I'm a little confused about what happens if the mirror server disappears.
From Books Online
"If the mirror server instance goes down, the principal server instance is unaffected and runs exposed (that is without mirroring the data)."
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179344.aspx
I was to the course [Upgrading your Database Administration Skills to SQL Server 2005] and the course material does not say the same."Scenario: Synchronous mirroring without a witness server. If the mirror server becomes unavailable, the principal server will take the database offline. This action attempts to maximize the protection of the database and ensure the integrity of its contents"
I've made tests that shows that Books Online is right,
but I would like to know if this is a behaviour that has changed.
I also would like to know if it's possible to run in a more secure mode,
where exposed operations is not allowed.
Best regards

Situation:
We have a backend system which stores our configuration data. In order to pull configuration information from this system our components need to have access to three pieces of data: application name, module name, and the variable to pull.
This same system allows us to log various events. It serves as a central point of configuration, maintenance and monitoring for all of our environments.
Desired Outcome:
We'd like to create a connection manager, log provider, and task "finalizer." We'd like to initialize the variables named above in one location and have all created components pull their required information from that one location.
Assumptions:
* Custom configuration managers are not possible.
* Custom connection managers and logging providers do not have access to the package variables.
* Custom tasks have access to the package variables.
Problems:
Logging Provider: The logging provider does not have access to the package level variables. The only variable that appears to be supported is ConfigString. Currently our component allows configuration of the required data using a "Variable::Variable" format in the ConfigString. We want the logging provider to pull its config data from elsewhere.
Connection Manager: The connection manager does not appear to have access to package level variables. The UI for configuring the connection manager does have access (through the IDtsVariableService). Our current component requires the designer to enter the required data into the component.
We're looking to expand our components to include further integration into our backend. We'd like to resolve the issue of components not having access to the package level variables.
Probed Solutions:
Custom Package Executable: Created as a replacement for DTExec. This fails because we have situations where we may need to run jobs via SQLAgent. Loaded the package, set all the variables and components properly, then executed.
Manual Initialization: Configure each component separately. This fails because we'd like to have a single point of maintenance for these configuration variables.
DTSTask and Static Variables: The heart of this post.
We have created a DTSTask that exists as the first item in the Control Flow and which configures the package level variables and a set of static variables. By "static variables" I refer to the following:
public static class DataStore
{
public static string ApplicationName;
public static string ModuleName;
}
Our components are all capable of accessing these static variables and everything functions wonderfully. (The variables are WORM; the above structure is not what I'm using as I'm aware that SSIS is multi threaded and all appropriate access controls should be used.)
There are concerns over the lifetime of these variables. We depend on the initial task to set these variables; a type constructor is unable to initialize them for us. Static variables are tightly tied to the lifetime of the AppDomain, so I have the following questions:
1. Are AppDomains reused by SSIS? (Is there a chance that a previously configured static variable will be used by a second package?) Research I've done indicates that the SSIS runtime exists in the context of the executing assembly so with DTExec or DTExecUI I'm confident that the AppDomain is not recycled; however, I'm unsure as to the answer in terms of jobs launched by SQLAgent.
2. Are AppDomains ever dynamically created by the SSIS runtime? I know that dynamic creation of AppDomains is explicitly forbidden by the SQL Server 2005 CLR implementation, but I'm not sure about the SSIS runtime. Research has seemed to indicate (but never explicitly state) that this is not done by the current implementation of SSIS.
3. What effect, if any, does "execute out of context" have on static variables? Research has indicated that as long as the package being executed has the appropriate task as the first item that the impact is nil.
Thank you for reading this question, and thank you in advance for any input or comments you may have.

Hi ;
I am trying to create several Excel sheets using SQL 2000 views like so:
Select * INTO [Excel 8.0;Database="C:spreadSheetsaNew.xls"] FROM [aView].
When I try and execute this in my app I get the following - Specified owner
name 'Excel 8.0;Database=c:spreadSheetsaNew.xls' either does not exist or
you do not have permission to use it.
If I use the above Select statement with an OLEDB connection it works.
I am using Imports System.Data.SqlClient, instantiating a new SQlConnection
object, opening the connection, etc..
Thanks,

I'm writing some generalized stored procedures for use form managed code. The following stored proc works great:
CREATE PROCEDURE fnd_Send (
@Message VARCHAR(5000),
@Contract SYSNAME,
@MessageType SYSNAME,
@FromService SYSNAME,
@ToService VARCHAR(100),
@Encrypted Bit
)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @Handle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER;
BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION @Handle
FROM SERVICE @FromService
TO SERVICE @ToService
ON CONTRACT @Contract
WITH ENCRYPTION = OFF;
SEND ON CONVERSATION @Handle
MESSAGE TYPE @MessageType(@Message);
Notice the use of SYSNAME parameters €“ translating the parameter into an object name - allows it to work in the BEGIN DIALOG statement when an system object is needed. Works create and cues up generic messages.
The following will not compile:
CREATE PROCEDURE fnd_Receive (
@Queue SYSNAME,
@Message VARCHAR(5000) out,
@MessageType SYSNAME out
)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @Handle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER;
RECEIVE TOP (1)
@Handle = conversation_handle,
@MessageType = message_type_name,
@Message = message_body
FROM @Queue;
END
GO
It won€™t let me use the SYSNAME field @Queue in the FROM clause. I€™m getting an unfriendly:
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure fnd_Receive, Line 15
Incorrect syntax near '@Queue'.
It looks like maybe I can€™t bind a variable in the FROM clause €“ perhaps like you cannot in a SELECT statement. I can fall back to dynamic SQL in the stored proc or in the managed code; I was hoping not to.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Also, are there any other techniques I'm missing to avoid falling back to a dynamic SQL statement.
Thank you in advance -

The server has 1 gig of memory and the cache hit ratio, and cache flushes both look good. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings,
Environment:
Server: SQL Server 2005 with service pack 1 running on Windows Server 2003
Clients: Internet Explorer 7, MS Office 2007
Setup:
Our companies reports are a mixture of Reporting Services Reports and Excel workbooks with pivot tables. We want both the reports and the pivot tables to be accessible from the same web page so users have a single entry point into all of the business intelligence tools. We have the Reporting Services Reports working just fine but there is an slight hiccup with the Excel documents. The Excel files upload just fine, but when clients try and download them they are always presented with the following Yes/No dialog:
"The file you are trying to open 'Resource.aspx' is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?"
Clicking Yes opens the file in excel but it is opened as Resource.aspx instead of the actual excel file.
Clicking No opens the file in excel as the actual excel file.
My questions are:
1. Why does the file upload correctly as an excel file type but download as an aspx?
2. Is there a way to let Reporting Services associate the .xlsx extension with Excel.
3. Is this even a Reporting Services problem? (I believe it is, because we also use SharePoint and excel files uploaded in sharepoint download correctly using IE7).
Any help or insight is appreciated.
Regards,
Jplocster

We have 2 data centers, site 1 and site 2. Â Site 1 is generally our primary, and site 2 is our Disaster Recovery (DR) site. Â I want to setup a SQL instance to have extremely high availability. Â Therefore I was looking at using DB mirroring, with synchronous data writing, high-safety and auto-failover. Â This requires the usage of a witness server.My problem with this setup, is that if the witness and principal are both at site 1, if site 1 goes away (power failure, asteroid impact, lol, anything else that would be a *true* DR scenario), then there is no failover to the mirror server at site 2. Â However, if you put the witness at site 2, anytime the WAN link between site 1 and site 2 has an issue, the DB will auto-failover to site 2. Â Is the reason for the recommendation of the witness being at the primary site because the thinking is that WAN link failure is likely more common than a *true* DR scenario that takes out all of site 1?

How do I pass a single column of values from a successful merge join to an EXECUTE SQL statement so it can be used with an "IN" criteria of the WHERE clause? Â Here's an example of my update statement with two random key values:
UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK IN ("XYZ123", "DEF890")
Is this even possible in SSIS, or am I better off using a loop and running the update EXECUTE SQL Statement for each individual key value, as in the following example?
UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK = "XYZ123"
UPDATE dbo.MyTable SET MyStatus = 1 WHERE MyPK = "DEF890"

I am getting this error when I issue the sp_setapprole command using sqlexecdirect() ODBC api call. Is there any way to work around this? Or is there a fix to the SQL Native Client? The error 15002 message text states "The procedure sys.sp_setapprole cannot be executed within a transaction". This is on a new connection so there should be no transactions active at the time. Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide on this.
