Excel Not Recognizing Numbers

I've got a SQL query returning data into MS Excel.
One of the columns returns numbers that I then have a SUMIF formula totalling.
However, when the numbers get to Excel, they are not recognised as numbers so my SUM doesn't work. Even if I format the cells as number, general or currency, the sum doesn't work.
Excel knows that there is something in the cell but doesn't treat it as a number in any way.
Can I include something in the SQL statement so that it forces the results to be a number?

I'm trying to write data to excel from an ssis component to a excel destination.
Even thought I'm writing numerics, every cell gets this error with a green tag:
Convert numbers stored as text to numbers
Excel Cells were all pre-formated to accounting 2 decimal, and if i manually type the exact data Im sending it formats just fine.
I'm hearing this a common problem -
On another project I was able to find a workaround for the web based version of excel, by writing this to the top of the file:
<style>.text { mso-number-format:@; } </style>
is there anything I can pre-set in excel (cells are already formated) or write to my file so that numerics are seen as numerics and not text.
Maybe some setting in my write drivers - using sql servers excel destination.

I have a report with a column which contains either a string such as "N/A" or a number such as 12. A user exports the report to Excel. In Excel the numbers are formatted as text.
I already tried to set the value as CDbl which returns error for the cells containing a string.
The requirement is to export the column to Excel with the numbers formatted as numbers and the strings such as "N/A' in the same column as string.
Any suggestions?

Hi all i'm having an issues when i trying to do a report:
i make a report and there is a field which contains data that can be numeric and numeric with letter: "77756" or "345WS" when i export my report to excel i and i open it i get like a make in the upper left coner of the cells that have only numbers asking me to convert this to numeric format, but this think is that i need this values to be string so i can apply filtering. is there a way that i can format my cell to string so the excel take it like that and allowme to do the autoifilter.

Hi there,
I am trying to import about 3300 lines of data from excel. Some of the columns in excel have negative, positive and even 0 as numbers.
I have matched those columns in the DB and have tried all the different data types that i thought should work, but on import, all negative and 0 numbers get dropped.
I have played with the excel formatting as well, but nothing seems to work.
Anyone encounter this before?

Hi all,
I'm having an issue with data from an OLE DB source being converted from numeric [DT_R8] to text when I export it to Excel. I had the column in the spreadsheet formatted as Numeric, but when I set it up as the data destination, it is showing in SSIS as [DT_WSTR].
The SSIS job runs OK, it just converts my numeric data to text in the spreadsheet. I'm surprised that the job actually runs, since I have to do explicit data conversions for my OLE DB string data in order to convert it to unicode. From what I have read elsewhere, the decision was made in SSIS not to use implicit data conversion, but to require explicit conversion. Yet this export is converting my numeric data to text.
I would appreciate any information on how to set up the Excel Destination to properly handle numeric information.

Hi,
I have an excel export with numeric values. When the SSIS package writes into the excel it treats all data types as strings and attaches an apostrophe in the beginning. I tried formatting the excel sheet with the number data type and saving it . It doesnt work.
Other strange thing is that when I go into the advanced editor for the excel destination and look into the properties of the external columns all of them have the data type as Unicode String[DT_WSTR] irrespective of what the data type is from the input.The UI allows me to change it to numeric for numeric columns without any error but the value is not saved at all which is very frustrating. I also tried changing it in the xml file of the package, it some how seems to overwrite it after validation. It would be really nice if it threw an error saying that it cannot be changed.
Anyways there seems to be no way of changing the destination data type if it s an existing file and if I create a new excel sheet there is no way of formatting data. Is there any way out?

i have an excel sheet
in it there is a column that holds values of item numbers
some of these values are preceeded with zeros E.G "00123" (with out the ")
when i view the data in excel i get this little green corner whice states (when pressed) that these values are numbers stoerd as text.
no inside the excel sheet i have no problem with that
but when i try to import the excel sheet into ssis using an excel source task
all these values are imported as nulls!!!
i am lost
i tried converting the format of these cells to numbers but then i loose the leading zeros
what i done temporarly to solve this problem is to accept excel's suggestion and turn these values into numbers
i then import them and convert them to strings in ssis and then ad dthe zeros.
now althouge this works, this isnt realy a solution.
i canot manualy correct each excel file each time i get a new copy
and in the future i will not have the luxuery of having fixed lenght values (so i wont be able to know how many zeroe i"d need to add)
there must be a better way
please help

Hi I am having a major problem with an SSIS package I am trying to write at the moment. The SSIS package is supposed to read a csv file and import it into a table. The issue I am having is that the file comes to me where the first 15 or so lines are terminated with a ,{CR}{LF}.
1,123,11,0,0,0,0,,,0000-00-00,
2,123,11,0,0,0,0,,,0000-00-00,
Then after the first 15 lines the row termination becomes a simple {CR}{LF}.
16,123,11,12,0,0,0,,,0000-00-00
The problem I am having is that at row 16 SSIS fails to recognize the {CR}{LF} and starts merging rows together so that row 16 and 17 appear as one row, row 18 and 19 appear as one row and so forth. As far as I can determine is that it does not recognize the {CR}{LF} at the end of row 16 but then recognizes the {CR}{LF} at the end of row 17. It does not make any sense. I do have a script that runs prior to processing the file to remove unescaped quotes.

And I tried adding the following line to try and remove the ,{CR}{LF} and replace it with a simple {CR}{LF} but that just made matters worse and the merging of rows happened accross all the lines then.

Using TextPad I looked at the original CSV file and determined that it was encoded in ASCII, I am at a loss as to why this is happening. If I open the file in excel it formats correctly, if I use SSIS the formating gets thrown off. The file is a simple .CSV with a text qualifier of " column delimeter of , and a row delimeter of {CR}{LF}.

My dimension table has a column called AccountNumber varchar(20), which is the business key.
I use SCD task to manage TYPE 2 changes on a particular column.
However, the SCD component doesn;t seem to recognize the change on the column. The datatype of the column in the dimension table and the datatype of the input column is same.
The datatype for the business key , which is varchar(20) is also same as the input column business key.
However, when I ran SQL profiler to see what is going on, I found that the SELECT statement
that was issued with the business key in the WHERE clause has char(20) instead of varchar(20)
for the business key. So, for example if the account number in the dimension table is '1234',
the SELECT statement is checking for '1234 '.
I trimmed the incoming string but I still get the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

We're replicating columns in a table from 7.0 server to SQL2k server. Once we've got the data on SQL2k, we were able to take advantage of DTS that was not available in version 7.0.
I recenlty added a column to the article and changed the DTS accordingly (transformation columns). However, I'm getting this error ever though I added the new column in the DTS.

The number of columns in the bcp file does not match what is defined in the DTS package. Regenerate the package.

I've recreated the package with no luck. This is becoming urgent as it's supposed to go into production soon.

I have installed and reinstalled SQL SERVER 2005 EXPRESS on my Vista Home Edition system a couple of times trying to get it to recognize IIS during setup.
Prior to installing SQL SERVER I have gone through the steps for turning on IIS and the checkboxes are all checked in the Control Panel| Programs section which shows IIS 7 and all its features are turned on.
I can open IIS and IIS Service Manager.
Yet when I install SQL SERVER 2005 EXPRESS and the setup checks for required features, IIS is never found - always has the yellow triangle symbol next it it.
Can anyone help me understand what is going on and what I can do about it?

I need to recognize only one month in a date range e to make a proportion of the quantity. Practically, period 31-08-2015 - 30-09-2015 is 31 days, 1 belonging August and 30 belonging September so 3.2258% of the quantity must belong August and 96.7742% September. The quantity 200, so 193.54 belong September (That's what I need to achieve). Range 01-09-2015 / 30-09-2015 Qty 500, all 500 belong September.
Range 01-07-2015 / 20-08-2015 Qty 2500 0 belong September. A little bit more complicated if I got 25-06-2015 / 16-12-2015. it 30 day for September and with a datediff I can count the days and make a proportion. I can write piece by piece the code but I'd prefer of course to have only one query for this.

Why does M$ Query Analyzer display all numbers as positive, no matterwhether they are truly positive or negative ?I am having to cast each column to varchar to find out if there areany negative numbers being hidden from me :(I tried checking Tools/Options/Connections/Use Regional Settings bothon and off, stopping and restarting M$ Query Analyer in betwixt, butno improvement.Am I missing some other option somewhere ?

I have a table with a column ID of ContentID. The ID in that column is all NULLs. I need a way to change those nulls to a number. It does not matter what type of number it is as long as they are different. Can someone point me somewhere with a piece of T-SQL that I could use to do that. There are over 24000 rows so cursor change will not be very efficient.

I have an 'ID' column. I'm up to about ID number 40000, but not all are in use, so ID 4354 might not be in any row. I want a list of all numbers which aren't in use. I want to write something like this:
select [numbers from 0 to 40000] where <number> not in (select distinct id from mytable)
but don't know how. Any clues?

I am using ASP.NET 2.0, and am attempting to write some code to connect to the database and query a data table. The compiler is not recognizing my SqlConnection statement. It does recognize other commands. And just to make sure, I created other sql objects such as ObjectDataSource and SqlDataSource. The compiler does not find a problem with that code.
Basically the compiler is telling me that I am missing a "using" directive. The compiler is wrong though, because I am including the statement "usingSystemData" Can someone please take a look at my code below and to see if you notice what the problem might be? Note that I numbered the lines of code below. Note that I also tried putting lines 3 trhough 6 before line 2(The page directive) but that did not fix the problem The compiler still gives me the same compiler message.

I am using a Excel Source to get the data from an excel file to sql server 2005 table. A couple columns are coming in a double precision float, but some values have characters in them, but those values are coming out as null, even though I changed the datatype from float to unicode string. Any inputs on resolving this will be much appreciated.

I am trying to get the contents of the Excel Files dynamically and dumping into the SQL Database using SSIS. Through WMI Event Watcher, I could find when one or more Excel files dumped in a particular folder and using ForEach Loop Container I was able to take all the filenames and pass it through Variables. But at the same time in the Data Flow, I have to pass each Sheet of an Excel File to the Excel Source control and export the data to my SQL Database using OLEDB Destination.
For that I need to get the names of each sheets in an Excel File and pass it to the Excel Source Control through variables. But when I give Data Access Mode as "Table name or view name variable" and provide the variable name in that, then it is giving an error message as "A destination table name has not been provided".
And at the same time, Since I was not able to provide an static Filename (as I am passing through Variables), when I tried to map the columns in the OleDB Destination, it is not allowing me to map the columns.
So all these things I should do at Run-time using Variables in SSIS. I don't want to hard-code any filenames or Sheet names. If any one of you have a solution, please share with me.

l've the following situation,
l've some excel files controlled by Vendor which changing frequently. The only thing does not change is the header name of each column.
So my question is, is there any way to create a new table based on the excel file selected including the column name in SSIS? So that l can use the data reader as source to select those columns l am interested on and start the integration.

i have an SSIS package that exports to an excel file. This works fine. the problem is that it appends the data instead of overwriting the file. Is there any way to overwrite the file like you can with a flat file? I have to email the file everyweek and don't want to have to clear it out manually. Any help would be appreciated

Hello,
I have a problem with retreving a excel data through excel source component.
I have source component as Excel Source which will connect to my .xls sheet.
To retrieve the values from the sheet i am using a query as,
"SELECT F14,F3 FROM [Charac Defn & Assgnment$]"
The column F14 is not formatted so that the format of the cell is "General" I have a different type of values in the F14 column such as "PE","PES",15,20,20.00,8888.9999 etc..
While i click on preview button of Excel source it shows only the text values and not the int or decimal values, its returning NULL for those cells. I tried to use convert function, its throwing an error as

When I open the spreadsheet in Excel 2000, it works fine. When I try to print, it crashes Excel. In testing, I narrowed it down to the Header/Footer, because it also crashes when I go to Page Setup and click on the header/footer tab.
However, I can print the same spreasheet from Excel 2007.
Am I just dealing with a "you need to upgrade all your clients" situation, or is there a known issue with certian formatting that is passed out with reports that is not supported by older versions of Excel?
I am using Reporting Services 2005 SP2 to serve up the report that is exported to Excel.
Any assistance is appreciated.

I have ssis package where I have excel connection manager with expression pointing to a variable which has path for location and name of excel spreadsheet to be create each with date on the name.ExcelFilePath points to variable for shared location where excel file will be saved.I have File system task for copying template excel file to destination location with date in file name.I drag and drop excel destination. Pointed to excel connection manager. Under data access mode, I have select table and view. When I try to select name of excel sheet, it says, no tables or views could be loaded. I should be able to see sheetname there so that I can map column. I only have option to create new spreadsheet. I want to use template to load data in excel file. I dont want to create new sheet. It was working before. But I opened the ssis package and its broken. I was able to see spreadsheet name before but I dont see it now even though I have not made any change to package. Hi,
I am creating an SSIS package witha a Dataflow task, which reads from an Excel source and then uses script component to dumpt the data to multiple tables in Sql Server database
I need to some how make my Excel source dynamic, that is my excel template which i would be using to map the excel columns to script component's input columns would be dynamic..
In other words, I should be able to define the Excel Source, Column Mapping Information, Precedence constraint to the Script component dynamically
Please suggest how could i accomplish this
