Execute A Stored Procedure Which Calls SSIS Packages Using A Proxy Account For Non Sysadmins In Sql Server 2005

Sep 18, 2007

Hi all,
I have a problem while i create a proxy account. The situation is like this...There is a user who has an login in to the server. He has a stored procedure which calls some on the SSIS packages and XP_cmdshell...so this stored procedure basically load some data in to the tables .So for the login in order to execute the stored procedure as he is not a Sys admin I have created a proxy account in my account as Iam an SA and then in the proxies and in principals I selected his login name and this way I have created a credential and a proxy account.

Now the problem is if he logins with his id and password and try to execute the stored procedure it gives an error message

Server: Msg 15153, Level 16, State 1, Procedure xp_cmdshell, Line 1
The xp_cmdshell proxy account information cannot be retrieved or is invalid. Verify that the '##xp_cmdshell_proxy_account##' credential exists and contains valid information.

....so this mean the login is not able to see the proxy account. So what I did is I created a job and then in the job owner tab I have selected his login and then created a step with the type operating system (CmdExec) as I need to just execute the stored procedure and used the proxy account that I have created.

so I gave the command -- exec <stored procedure> --.
But this job fails and gives the error message as
[298] SQLServer Error: 536, Invalid length parameter passed to the SUBSTRING function. [SQLSTATE 42000]....

So now ....first My question is am I doing in a right way....if its right then why Iam not able to execute the stored procedure.

If there is any other way through which I can execute the stored procedure using a proxy account for the logins who are not sys admins....please do let me know.....

Thanks

Xp_cmdshell Does Not Execute For Non-sysadmin Account Even With Proxy Account

Mar 2, 2004

Hi all, i hope you can help me.

Basically a dts package has been setup that pulls in data from another companies server, this data requires to be on-demand i.e individual users can pull in updates of the data when they require it.

I am using xp_cmdshell and dtsrun to pull in the data. This obviouly works fine for me as i am a member of sysadmin.

Books online quotes " SQL Server Agent proxy accounts allow SQL Server users who do not belong to the sysadmin fixed server role to execute xp_cmdshell"

So i went to the SQL Server Agent Properties 'Job System' tab and unchecked 'Non-sysadmin job step proxy account' and entered a proxy account.

The proxy account has been setup as a Windows user with local administrator privilages and even a member of the sysadmin server role - just in case.

Now when i log onto the db with my test account - a non-sysadmin - and attempt to run the stored proc to import the data i recieved the message 'EXECUTE permission denied on object 'xp_cmdshell', database 'master', owner 'dbo' '

hmm... so basically i have either misunderstood BoL or there is something not quite right in my setup.

I have search the net for a few days now and yet i can find no solution.

Can anyone help?

Integration Services :: Remotely Execute Packages On SSIS Server - Packages Are Deployed In File System

Apr 22, 2015

We manage some SSIS servers, which has only SSIS and SSIS tools installed on them and not the sql server DB.

SSIS packages and configuration files are deployed on a NAS. We run the SSIS packages through DTEXEC by logging in to the server.

We want to allow developers to run their packages on their own on the server, but at the same time we dont want to give them physical access on the server i.e we do not want to add them into RDP users list on server properties. We want them to allow running their packages remotely on the server.

One way We could think of is by using powershell remoting and we are working on that. But is there any other way or any tool already present for the same.

Stored Procedure To Execute DTS Packages

Apr 26, 2004

Hi, hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this.

I have a stored procedure that conditionally executes different DTS Packages. Everything seems to work, there's no errors at all, but the DTS Packages are never executed. Wondering if anyone has any ideas.

Here's the stored procedure....

CREATE PROCEDURE exportLists
AS

DECLARE @script VARCHAR(8000)
DECLARE @id INT
DECLARE @max INT

select regionid,count(distinct homephone) as phone
into #phone
from tbl_template
Where exportid is null
group by regionid

select officeid,listpath
into #office
from tbl_office
WHERE startdate <= GETDATE()
AND (enddate >= GETDATE() OR enddate IS NULL)
and listpath is not null
and listpath <> ''

Select case when phone > 2500 then '"exportLists" /A MDBFile="' + listpath + '" /A OfficeID ="' + convert(varchar(10),officeid) + '" '
Else '"resetTemplate" /A OfficeID="' + convert(varchar(10),officeid) + '" '
end as cmd
,Identity(int,1,1) as rowno
,phone
into #temp
from #office as O
inner Join #phone as p
on o.officeid=p.regionid

Set @max=@@rowcount
set @id = 1

While @id <=@max
Begin
Select @script='"Dtsrun /S "' + @@SERVERNAME + '" /E /N ' + cmd
+ case when phone > 2500
then '/A ExportID="' + convert(varchar(10),(Select coalesce(Max(listid),0) + 1 from tbl_sf3Lists)) + '" '
else ' ' end
, @id=@id+1
from #temp
Where rowno = @id
End

Return

Using Proxy Accounts To Run SSIS Packages By SQL Agent

Feb 13, 2008

Hello!

I have SSIS Package that needs special permissions in network. I want to schedule SSIS running using SQL Agent. I don't want to other Jobs starts with special permissions. So, I decided to use proxy account to impersonate SSIS starting process by account with those permissions. I've perfomed following steps:
1. Create Login for the future proxy account and add it to sysadmins role.
2. Create Credential with account name and password information.
3. Create proxy account and give to it rights to run SSIS, CmdExec and ActiveX create.
4. Set Run as for step that starts my package to this proxy
5. Start my job.
and I receive error "Process couldnot be created for step 1 job xxx. Reason: 1314"
SQL Agent account and proxy accounts has also administrators rights on SQL Server computer and rights to login as service.
When I change step configuration to run as SQL Agent account job completes succesfull.
What do I do wrong?

Thx,
Olga

Execute SSIS Package Under Proxy Randomly Fails???

May 29, 2008

Hi There

We executed windows scheduled batch failes that execute as DOMAINuser1 to dtsexec packages.

I moved these packages to run in sql jobs.

The agent runs as local system. In order to get the packages to run since they are encryoted with DOMAINuser1 key.

I created a DOMAINuser1 credential and a proxy.

I execute the SSIS package job steps under this proxy.

One day it all works the next day they fail randomly with the "unable to decrypt with user key" error.

I am very familiar with this error, however it makes no sense, thses packges are not being touched, no one is altering them and perhaps saving them with different user keys. They are all encrypted with the DOMAINuser1 key. One day everything works the next day they fail.

A master package will run and in the middle of executing other package it suddenly gets this error, like the proxy suddenly stops working.

I have found nothing in the event logs?

Any ideas ?

FoxPro Triggers Call FoxPro Stored Proc Calls SQL Server Stored Procedure

Mar 10, 2005

I didn't want to maintain similar/identical tables in a legacy FoxPro system and another system with SQL Server back end. Both systems are active, but some tables are shared.

Initially I was going to use a Linked Server to the FoxPro to pull the FP data when needed. This works. But, I've come up with what I believe is a better solution. Keep in mind that these tables are largely static - occassional changes, edits.

I will do a 1 time DTS from FP into SQL Server tables.

I then create INSERT and UPDATE triggers within FoxPro.

These triggers fire a stored procedure in FoxPro that establishes a connection to the SQL Server and fire the appropriate stored procedure on SQL Server to CREATE and/or UPDATE the corresponding table there.

In the end - the tables are local to both apps.

If the UPDATES or TRIGGERS fail I write to an error log - and in that rare case - I can manually fix. I could set it up to email me from within FoxPro as well if needed.

Here's the FoxPro and SQL Server code for reference for the Record Insert:

FOXPRO employee.dbf InsertTrigger:
employee_insert_trigger(VAL(Employee.ep_pk),Employ ee.fname,Employee.lname,Employee.email,Employee.us er_login,Employee.phone)

Running SSIS-packages In Stored Procedure Using Dtexec

Apr 2, 2008

Hi,

I'm running several SSIS-packages in stored procedure using dtexec. Actually, there is a software that is running the procedure, but that's not important here.

The problem: if some of the packages failes, the whole procedure does not fail and I don't know if all the packages are successfully completed.

Here is a sample list of ssis-packages from procedure:

exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f "E:SSISSourcedataSourcedataaaa.dtsx"'

exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f "E:SSISSourcedataSourcedatabb.dtsx" '

exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f "E:SSISSourcedataSourcedataccc.dtsx"'

exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f "E:SSISSourcedataSourcedataddd.dtsx"'

exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /f "E:SSISSourcedataSourcedataeee.dtsx"'

So, if eg bbb.dtsx would fail, is it possible to get the whole procedure failing?

Recursive Calls To Stored Procedure

Aug 24, 2007

I need to develope a stored procedure (eventually called by a trigger) that creates a record in an event table for all the descendants of a drawing. There are 3 tables involved as example tables shown below:

DwgTable

DwgID (integer)--drawing record identifier

PrntDwgID (integer)--parent drawing record identifier (a previously defined DwgID from this table)

DwgEventTable

DwgEventID (integer)--record identifier

DwgID (integer)--value from DwgTable

EventID (integer)--value from EventTable

EventTable

EventID
There are other fields in two of the tables and only the fields shown in the DwgEventTable, but only the fields shown are required for adding a record in the DwgEventTable for a new event in the EventTable. The problem is identifying all the DwgID's of the descendant of the DwgID where the EventID occurred. There may be 0 to N descendants in 0 to N generations. I need to add a record for the original DwgID and all the descendant DwgID's in the DwgEventTable for the event identified by EventID.

I could do this from the client side, but a better place would be from the server side. I need some clue(s) on how to start coding a recursive stored procedure in SQL Server 2005. From what I have read, you cannot create a managed code procedure that appends or updates records--if managed code can add/modify records then I can do the above with managed code procedure.

Any Suggestions?

SQL 2012 :: SSIS - Execute Stored Procedure With Parameters Does Not Work

Jun 9, 2015

Using the following:

SQL Server: SQL Server 2012
Visual Studio 2012

I have created an SSIS package where I have added an Execute SQL Task to run an existing stored procedure in my SQL database.

General:
Result Set: None
Connection Type: OLE DB
SourceType: Direct Input
IsQueryStoredProcedure: False (this is greyed out and cannot be changed)
Bypass Prepare: True

When I use the following execute statement where I am "Hard Coding" in the parameters, the stored procedure runs successfully and it places the data into the table per the stored procedure.

SQLStatement: dbo.sp_ml_location_load @system_cd='03', @location_type_cd=Store;

However, the @system_cd parameter can change, so I wanted to set these parameters up as variables and use the parameter mapping in the Execute SQL Task.

I have set this up as follows and it runs the package successfully but it does not put the data into the table. The only thing I can figure is either I have the variables set up incorrectly or the parameter mapping set up incorrectly.

Stored procedure variables:

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_ml_location_load]
(@system_cd nvarchar(10), @location_type_cd nvarchar(10))
AS
BEGIN .....................

Here is my set up, what is wrong here:

I Created these Variables:

Name Scope Data Type Value
system_cd Locations String '03'
location_type_cd Locations String Store

I added these parameter mappings in the Execute SQL Task

Variable Name Direction Data TypeParameter NameParameter Size
User::system_cd Input NVARCHAR@system_cd -1
User::location_type_cd Input NVARCHAR@location_type_cd -1

I used this SQLStatement: EXEC dbo.sp_ml_location_load ?,

It runs the package successfully but it does not put the data into the table.

SSIS Packages Validating Before Execute

Feb 18, 2008

Hi

I have an SSIS package that wont run whne i try to run it in one go, but if i run it step by step it will succeed
as the reason its failing is in the 2nd step it references a table that doesn't exist (its created in the 1st step.

So at the start package is trying to validate, but it won't as the table is created in step 1.

So this is why it works if i execute this step by step, is there a way of turning off the pre run validation
on SSIS scripts ?

SSIS Hard Time Getting Back XML Return Data From Stored Procedure Call Executed By Execute SQL Task

Aug 9, 2006

I'm having a hard time to getting back an xml data back from a stored procedure executed by an Execute SQL task.

I'm passing in an XML data as a parameter and getting back resulting XML data as a parameter. The Execute SQL task is using ADO connection to do this job. The two parameters(in/out) are type of "string" and mapped as string.

When I execute the task, I get the following error message.

[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "dbo.PromissorPLEDataUpload" failed with the following error: "The incoming tabular data stream (TDS) remote procedure call (RPC) protocol stream is incorrect. Parameter 2 ("@LogXML"): Data type 0xE7 has an invalid data length or metadata length.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

I also tried mapping the parameter as XML type, but that didn't work either.

If anyone knows what's going on or how to fix this problem please let me know. All I want to do is save returning XML data in the parameter to a local package variable.

Thanks

SQL 2012 :: Proxy Account Not Being Used

Jan 14, 2015

I have a frustrating problem where I am using the Ola Hallengren jobs to backup to a network share. (This isn't something specific to his scripts).

For various reasons the SQL Server account can not be granted access to the share so I thought I would use a proxy account which does have access (this has been fully tested). I am using a CmdExec proxy.

The problem comes now that when I run the job it still thinks access is denied when running the xp_create_subdir command.

When I recreated this problem locally on my machine, as soon as I add the SQL Server account access to the share the backups work, so why isn't the job using the proxy account?

Creating A Proxy Account

Oct 30, 2006

I am trying to run SSIS packages under SQL Server Agent 2005 and I keep getting a package failed error in the event viewer.

I've heard that I need to set up a proxy account. I have found the following code and need a little explanation on what all the parts mean since I am very new to this:
Use master
CREATE CREDENTIAL [MyCredential] WITH IDENTITY = 'yourdomainmyWindowAccount', secret = 'WindowLoginPassword'
Use msdb
Sp_add_proxy @proxy_name='MyProxy', @credential_name='MyCredential'
Sp_grant_login_to_proxy @login_name=' devlogin', @proxy_name='MyProxy'
Sp_grant_proxy_to_subsystem @proxy_name='MyProxy', @subsystem_name='SSIS'

Let's say for the sake of argument my domain is called CompanyInc and I log into windows with my name Philip_Jaques and my password is badpassw0rd. Would I modify the above code this way to create my proxy?

Use master
CREATE CREDENTIAL [MyCredential] WITH IDENTITY = 'CompanyIncPhilip_Jaques', secret = 'badpassw0rd'
Use msdb
Sp_add_proxy @proxy_name='MyProxy', @credential_name='MyCredential'
Sp_grant_login_to_proxy @login_name='Philip_Jaques', @proxy_name='MyProxy'
Sp_grant_proxy_to_subsystem @proxy_name='MyProxy', @subsystem_name='SSIS'

Also, when I create this proxy account where in SQL Server 2005 can I go to view it and its properties? And assuming I get the proxy account set up correctly, how do I get my current jobs to start using it so they will successfully run?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

Proxy Account/Credential

Feb 14, 2008

There is one thing that€™s confusing me in creating a proxy account.

I am trying to get an SSIS package configured as a SQL Server job and execute it from a non-sysadmin login. But when I execute it gives the error message:

Non-SysAdmins have been denied permission to run DTS Execution job steps without a proxy account. The step failed.

I know that we have to create a proxy account for this to happen and creating of proxy account prompts me to choose a credential, and that is where I do not understand the logic. From MS website I can find the following, but it is confusing to me

This proxy account must use a credential that lets SQL Server Agent run the job as the account that created the package or as an account that has the required permissions.

ref: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;918760

I tried reading all the related articles, but still the process of creating the credential is confusing to me, can someone throw some light on the logic of proxy/credential here?

Thanks
Satya

Cannot Use Credentials For Proxy Account

Jul 31, 2006

Hi,

because my package does not run with SQL-Server-Agent, but without problems if started by "hand", I created a new credential which contains the information needed for the package. I did this as described on: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190703.aspx .

After that i tried to create an proxy account, but when I chose the created credential, Management Studio says "Der Proxy "[name_of_credential] ist kein gĂĽltiger Windows-Benutzer(Microsoft SQL Server, Fehler: 14529)". This means something like: "This Proxy is not a valid windows-user. Error: 14529".

Any hints how to use a credential that is not a windows-user?

Jan Wagner

Proxy Account Not Responding

Feb 15, 2006

Hi,

I have an SSISS package running in a job step, the job is owned and has to be run by a non-sysdamin SQL login. I have created a new credential (windows autrhentication, sysadmin priviledges) , mapped it to proxies 'SSISS' and 'Operating systems (CmdExec)' and have assigned the job step to run as that credential. Yet I'm getting the following error message:

Unable to start execution of step 1 (reason: Error authenticating proxy DomainUserName, system error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.). The step failed.

Does anyone know why this is?

Thanks
