Execution Order Insert && Update

Mar 18, 2008

Hello All,

I have a Conditional Split, where there are two outputs.

First output is a dataset which is to be inserted into the database.

Second output is a dataset for which the data already exists in the DB. I just need to update those data.

I have a doubt here. I want the insertion to be done first and then updation.
Is there any property to be set for insertion or updation, something that maintains the order of execution or priority of execution.

Please do ask me if you need any further clarification.

Thanks,
Kapadia Shalin P.

Can I Use A SqlDataSource Control Exclusively To Pass Data To A Stored Procedure For Execution (insert/update Only)?

Feb 28, 2008

Hi,
I'm reasonably new to ASP.NET 2.0
I'm in my wizard_FinishButtonClick event, and from here, I want to take data from the form and some session variables and put it into my database via a stored procedure.  I also want the stored procedure to return an output value.  I do not need to perform a select or a delete.
For the life of me, I can't find a single example online or in my reference books that tells me how to accomplish this task using a SqlDataSource control.  I can find lots of examples on sqldatasources that have a select statements (I don't need one) and use insert and update sql statements instead of stored procedures (I use stored procedures).
I desperately need the syntax to:
a) create the SqlDataSource with the appropriate syntax for calling a stored procedure to update and/or insert (again, this design side of VS2005 won't let me configure this datasource without including a select statement...which I don't need).
b) syntax on how to create the parameters that will be sent to the stored procedure for this sqldatasource (including output parameters).
c) syntax on how to set the values for these parameters (again...coming from form controls and session variables)
d) syntax on how to execute, in the code-behind, the stored procedure via the sqldatasource.
If anybody has sample code or a link or two, I would be most appreciative.
Thank you in advance for any help!

calling that global variable...can I be 100% sure that the call to that global
variable in the 3rd table will always be the result from the first two

I mean will it always be true that the first two tables are analyzed and
"executed" before that third table?

Thanks for any help. If there are any links on this topic on the microsoft

DTS Package Execution Order

Nov 17, 2004

I have a package that has 12 data pump tasks all executing in parallel.

It is transferring raw data from an AS400 DW to a MSSQLSvr Staging area.

Each pump task on completion assigns values to a set of global variables, then having done this passes these as parameters to a sproc which inserts them into a table.

This seems to work for 4 or 5 of the pump tasks but, the rest of the rows in the table are all the same because the remaining pump tasks are all executing before the sprocs.

Is there a way to make sure that the entire set of job steps completes, before starting another job set of steps while still keeping them running in parallel.

I had wondered if there was a way to use the PumpComplete phase of each pump step to fire off the sproc, but can't see how you execute the step.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Task Execution Order

May 20, 2006

Hi,

Is there any way to enforce task execution order within a control flow? I need to have tasks execute after each other, because for example Task B depends on the execution of Task A.

Doesn't the success constraint enforce execution order? When I run my package the tasks seem to execute in a random order which is not what I want.

What I am trying to do is:

Loop through all Xml files in directory

For each Xml file:
For categories, products & fields:
Truncate staging table
Insert data from Xml file into staging table

After all Xml files have been processed then import data from staging to main tables

Here is my control flow:

Table Execution Order

Nov 14, 2007

I have nested lists and I want to set a global value in my custom code AFTER a specific table footer row. Does anybody know in what order the table elements are rendered? I have tried adding my piece of code into a group value, the hidden property, the color property, and sending it as a parameter to a subreport, but it still sets that variable first before rendering the table footer row that I want to display before I set that variable. I have been pulling my hair out trying to do this one! Help!

Execution Order In A Transaction Batch

BEGIN TRAN T1;

SELECT * from table1;

How about here?

BEGIN TRAN T1;
UPDATE table1 ...;
BEGIN TRAN M2 ;
UPDATE table2 ...;
SELECT * from table1;
COMMIT TRAN M2;
UPDATE table3 ...;
COMMIT TRAN T1;

how can i guarantee that statements will be executed from top to bottom in a transaction batch like above? I am not interested in the errors in statements. I just want whole thing to either execute fully from top to bottom or none executes

Foreign Key Constraints Execution Order?

Sep 4, 2006

How can I get and or set the order in which the cascading deletes of a table are executed??
I have table A with cascading deletes to Table B and Table C. Records in table B can not be deleted if they are referenced from table C. So if I delete C, then B and then A; that would work. But B then C and then A might be prohibited due to the constraint between B and C. Therefor the order of execution of the cascading delete is important.

ForEach Loop Execution Order

May 27, 2008

Hi

I am designing a ETL system to extract data from multiple systems. I have designed a batch control application and database to manage the process. I was thinking of extending this to include the execution of the SSIS packages. I would basically store all of the package details in the database, and when I am executing a particular systems load, I would get the list of packages required and loop through them in a ForEach loop. The question I have is can I guarantee the order of execution? I will put an order or execution in the DB and when I select the data, I can order by these columns.
I am concerned that in putting the data into a record set in SSIS its order could be changed resulting in the packages executing incorrectly.

Has anyone done anything similar to this and and run into problems, or is it not an issue?
Many Thanks
Michael

SSIS Tasks Execution Order Problem

Jun 9, 2006

Hi,

I'm facing a problem with my SSIS package regarding the execution order of tasks. I am using my package for the purpose of loading data from XML to staging tables in the database, and have a loop to process all XML files.

As a precondition to the loading action itself, I am running a stored procedure against the database (using the ExecuteSQL task) to check whether all staging tables are empty. The output parameter of that stored procedure is mapped to a variable I have defined in the SSIS package, so I can use it as a basis for the decision whether to run the loading action or not.

In order to test my package I added a script task, right after the execution of the stored procedure with a precedence constraint, that pops up a messagebox with the value of the stored procedure return value stored in the package variable.

The problem is that for the first iteration of the loop, the variable value presented by the messagebox is incorrect (equals to the initial value I assigned to the variable), and it looks like the script task starts before the stored procedure execution task finishes and its output value is stored in the package variable.

Please assist.

SQL Server 2008 :: Update Null Enabled Field Without Interfering With Rest Of INSERT / UPDATE

Apr 16, 2015

If I have a table with 1 or more Nullable fields and I want to make sure that when an INSERT or UPDATE occurs and one or more of these fields are left to NULL either explicitly or implicitly is there I can set these to non-null values without interfering with the INSERT or UPDATE in as far as the other fields in the table?

EXAMPLE:

CREATE TABLE dbo.MYTABLE(
ID NUMERIC(18,0) IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
FirstName VARCHAR(50) NULL,
LastName VARCHAR(50) NULL,

[Code] ....

If an INSERT looks like any of the following what can I do to change the NULL being assigned to DateAdded to a real date, preferable the value of GetDate() at the time of the insert? I've heard of INSTEAD of Triggers but I'm not trying tto over rise the entire INSERT or update just the on (maybe 2) fields that are being left as null or explicitly set to null. The same would apply for any UPDATE where DateModified is not specified or explicitly set to NULL. I would want to change it so that DateModified is not null on any UPDATE.

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
VALUES('John','Smith',NULL)

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName)
VALUES('John','Smith')

INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
SELECT FirstName, LastName, NULL

Prolonged Execution For Table UPDATE Statement - Not Sure It Finishes

Jul 27, 2006

I am cleaning up a large database table that has Date keys instead of real DateTimes. To do this, I am running the following query...

UPDATE MQIC.DBO.OBSERVATION_F

SET MQIC.DBO.OBSERVATION_F.OBS_DATE = MQIC.DBO.DATE_D.ACTUAL_DATE

FROM MQIC.DBO.OBSERVATION_F INNER JOIN MQIC.DBO.DATE_D

ON MQIC.DBO.OBSERVATION_F.DATE_KEY = MQIC.DBO.DATE_D.DATE_KEY

where Actual_Date is what is being stored, and the Date_Key is to be dropped.

The particulars are this -

Date_D table - 92,000 rows - 40 MB

Observation_F - 2,000,000 rows - 3.2 GB

This is being run on a remotedly hosted rack server with an AMD processor, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB harddisk space, 20 GB used.

SQL-Server 2005 Express - SP1

If I do the same query as a SELECT Statement,

UPDATE MQIC.DBO.OBSERVATION_F

SELECT MQIC.DBO.OBSERVATION_F.DATE_KEY, MQIC.DBO.DATE_D.ACTUAL_DATE

FROM MQIC.DBO.OBSERVATION_F INNER JOIN MQIC.DBO.DATE_D

ON MQIC.DBO.OBSERVATION_F.DATE_KEY = MQIC.DBO.DATE_D.DATE_KEY

it runs to completion in about 15 min - during the entire time there is extensive used of CPU from Task Manager.

If I do the above statement, it seems to use lots of resources (50% +) for about 5 min, then falls to 5%. It just seems to sit there, for an hour + at which time I've killed the query.

This is actually the second time I tried this. The first time was on a different machine, with the P4, 3GB RAM, plenty of disk space, and using SQL-Server 2005 Standard - SP1. Exactly the same decrease in resources happened, and even though it ran several hours, no results.

Any thoughts here - not waiting long enough, memory leaks, etc.?

Thanks!

T-SQL UPDATE .. FROM .. ORDER BY Problem

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I was hoping someone could help me with what I'm sure is a very simpleproblem...I just can't seem to find the syntax!I'm wanting to update the rows in 'tbl_consolidate' from 'tbl_hold',but working through the records in 'tbl_hold' in the order of dates ina date field, rather than the order that the rows are necessarily in.I came up with the following code to do this:update tbl_consolidateset field1 = b.field1, field2 = b.field2, field3 = b.field3from(select * from tbl_hold order by datefield1) bwhere tbl_consolidate.ID1 = b.ID1(I originally tried to use an alias 'a' for tbl_consolidate but thisthrew an error)In tbl_consolidate, ID1 is unique, but in tbl_hold there can be manyrecords with the same value in ID1. Using my code, I'd expect theUPDATE to work its way through the records in tbl_hold in order of thedatefield1 column, but it doesn't seem to do it in this order. Cananyone help?

Can I Insert/Update Large Text Field To Database Without Bulk Insert?

Nov 14, 2007

I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind.  I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while.  Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.

Rows Insert Out Of Order

Oct 30, 2000

I am currently trying to insert or import some rows into a table and sql server always seems to sort it by one of the columns in a different order that I insert the data. I would appreciate any feedback on this issue. Here is my table structure.

columnA columnB columnC columnD columnE columnF columnG
char char int int int smallint char

it keeps sorting by column F and seperates them by odds and evens. Does any have a clue why this is happening? I am just using these two inserts.

insert into tableNAME values('AA', 'A55', 0, 31, 1, 1, 3)
insert into tableNAME values('AA', 'A55', 0, 31, 1, 2, 2)

These two rows would be seperated by any other rows already contained in the table. If I add more rows. It lumps them by odds and evens.

Thanks

Order By In A INSERT INTO..SELECT

Mar 27, 2006

I have the following basic statements being executed:Create a temp table, #TempPagingInsert Into #TempPaging (Col1, Col2)Select Col1, Col2 From SomeOtherTable Order By Col2, Col1Select * from #TempPagingI can't provide a reproduceable scenario right now without making thisinto a 200K post, so I'm hoping someone will know what the issue is.. Ican't find anything regarding this in BOL.Basically the order is off a little bit every now and then when thereare large amounts of data, like more than a couple hundred rows. Isthere something I need to do to guarantee the originally selectedorder?This is very important that it be in order from the original selectstatement as this is for paging. Adding an order by in the secondselect from the temp table will not fix the problem. In this particularinstance that I have reproduced we are using SQL 2005 but have alsoseen this on SQL 2000 servers. I had previously asked this question asI was using a SELECT INTO statement, but now we are manually creatingthe temp table (Pain in the ass) and still having the same issue. Bestcase scenario is for it to work for a SELECT INTO.Any ideas?

INSERT INTO As SELECT With ORDER BY

Hi,

This may sound like a dumb question, but I need to be certain of the answer.

If I have a query like this:

INSERT INTO table1

SELECT col4, col5, col6, ...
FROM table2
ORDER BY col7, col8, col9, ...

and table1 has an identity column that increments by 1 each time, am I gauranteed that the records inserted into table1 will always be inserted in the order as specified in the ORDER BY clause and hence the increasing identity column in table1 will reflect the same order as that of the ORDER BY clause?

Seems like it should be the case but I need to be sure.

Thanks,

Peter

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Insert / Update Triggers When Insert Run Via Script

Oct 23, 2014

I'm working on inserting data into a table in a database. The table has two separate triggers, one for insert and one for update (I don't like it this way, but that's how it's been for years). When there is a normal insert, done via a program, it looks like the triggers work fine. When I run an insert manually via a script, the first insert trigger will run, but the update trigger will fail. I narrowed down the issue to a root cause.

This root issue is due to both triggers using the same temporary table name. When the second trigger runs, there's an error stating that a few columns don't exist. I went to my test server and test db and changed the update trigger so that the temporary table is different than the insert trigger temporary table, the triggers work fine. The weird thing is that if the temporary table already exists, when the second trigger tries to create the temporary table, I would expect it to fail and say that it already exists.I'm probably just going to update the trigger tonight and change the temporary table name.
