Hey
I want my output to exlude the rows where some columns is missing theire values..
how can I do that?
I have recently installed SQL 7.0 on a test server for the purpose of testing an application that currently runs on SQL 6.5. I used the Upgrade Wizard to move a small test database from 6.5 to 7.0. The upgrade was successful, with a few errors that were from Logins that were not defined as users in the test database.
When I try to run the application on 7.0, I get a series of “ADO Exception” errors with the SOURCE : OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers. The description of the errors reads “Cannot use empty object or column names. Use a single space if necessary.” When I select OK in the message box, the application continues to load, until another error occurs. After 20 –30 message boxes, the application comes up. However once in the application, the errors continue.
Is there someone who could shed some light on the nature of my problem? There is obviously something incompatible between the latest version of the SQL ODBC driver, my application, and the database. The description seems to refer to empty columns or tables. Obviously, this was not a problem with 6.5 and the older ODBC driver (3.60). I have run the database through the upgrade wizard twice. Once with the ANSI NULLS option OFF, and the other time with it ON. This makes no difference. I have searched the Microsoft Web site under SQL and ODBC using some of the keywords in the message box., but did not come up anything useful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am wanting to make a query to find out if there are any columns in a table that are null for all records.
So far I am using a cursor that holds all the column names of that table and then a stored procedure that would use a loop to cycle through all the column names in a query to essentially count the number of nulls for each column and then an If statement to check to see if the #of nulls = to the number of records.
What isn't working is my query to count the number of nulls...Here is my query
select count(*)
from XYZ
where @cName is null
Ive tried declaring cName as a sysname, and varchar, neither work.
Also, I've tried using COL_NAME(OBJECT_ID('XYZ'), someColumnIndx)...I think this would be the better choice just because I wouldn't need to use a cursor, but both aren't working.
I am a bit new to MSSQL and don't know my way around the system tables. Is there a sys table that would give me this info so I wouldn't need to perform a query?
Any info would be great.
Hi guys,
Is there a way to declare a default value of empty string '' for a varchar table column?
Thanks,Kevin
I am inserting the following columns from one table to another,
SalesOrder,Customer,CustomerPoNumber,ShippingInstrs,CustomerName,ShipAddress1,ShipAddress2,ShipAddress3
How do I make sure that all empty spaces are trimmed.
We are writing a C application that is using ODBC to insert recordsinto a database. We have a NOT NULL column that can legitimately havean empty value, i.e. we know the value and it is empty (i.e. a zerolength string). We are using SQLBindParameter() to bind a variable to theparameterized insert statement <<in the form: INSERT INTO table VALUES(?, ?, ?)>>. We are using SQLExecDirect() to process the SQL.We are running into the problem where ODBC is converts the empty (zerolength) string into a NULL value and this errors due to the fact thatthe column is defined as NOT NULL.We do not want to redefine the column as NULL, becasue myunderstanding of the correct usage of a NULL column is to indicatethat a value is unknown or meaningless... in our case we know thevalue (it is empty) and an empty value has meaning within ourapplication.I'm sure that this issue has been seen and address thousands(millions?) of times... any guidance would be appreciated.
View 2 Replies View Relatedwe have a database hosted online on sql server 05. at work, we have a sql 2000 query analyzer on a machine, and sql 2005 management studio on a machine. both machines can connect to the database, both can pull up the data from a certain table. but there are two columns that display info in query analyzer that show up as empty on management studio. not null, just empty.

Hello:
I am running into an issue with RS2k PDF export.
Case: Exporting Report to PDF/Printing/TIFF
Report: Contains 1 table with 19 Columns. 1 column is static, the other 18 are visible at the users descretion. Report when printed/exported to pdf spans 2 pages naturally, 16 on the first page, 3 on the second, and the column widths have been adjusted to provide a perfect page span .
User A elects to hide two of the columns, and show the rest. The report complies and the viewable version is perfect, the excel export is perfect.. the PDF export on the first page causes every fith column, starting with the last column that was hidden to be expanded to take up additional width. On the spanned page, it renders the first column on that page correctly, then there is a white space gap equal to the width of the hidden columns and then the rest of the cells show with the last column expanded to take up the same width that the original 2 columns were going to take up, plus its width.
We have tried several different settings to see if it helps this issue or makes it worse. So far cangrow/canshrink/keep together have made no impact. It is not possible to increase the page size due to limited page size selection availablility for the client. There are far too many combinations of what the user can elect to show or hide to put together different tables to show and hide on the same report to remove this effect.
Any help or suggestion on this issue would be appreciated
I have a business need to create a report by query data from a MS SQL 2008 database and display the result to the users on a web page. The report initially has 6 columns of data and 2 out of 6 have JSON data so the users request to have those 2 JSON columns parse into 15 additional columns (first JSON column has 8 key/value pairs and the second JSON column has 7 key/value pairs). Here what I have done so far:
I found a table value function (fnSplitJson2) from this link [URL]. Using this function I can parse a column of JSON data into a table. So when I use the function above against the first column (with JSON data) in my query (with CROSS APPLY) I got the right data back the but I got 8 additional rows of each of the row in my table. The reason for this side effect is because the function returned a table of 8 row (8 key/value pairs) for each json string data that it parsed.
1. First question: How do I modify my current query (see below) so that for each row in my table i got back one row with 19 columns.
SELECT A.ITEM1,A.ITEM2,A.ITEM3,A.ITEM4, B.*
FROM PRODUCT A
CROSS APPLY fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM5,NULL) B
If updated my query (see below)Â and call the function twice within the CROSS APPLY clause I got this error: "The multi-part identifier "A.ITEM6" could be be bound.
2. My second question: How to i get around this error?
SELECT A.ITEM1,A.ITEM2,A.ITEM3,A.ITEM4, B.*, C.*
FROM PRODUCT A
CROSS APPLY fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM5,NULL) B, Â fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM6,NULL) C
I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 version. Windows 7 desktop.
I'd like to first figure out the count of how many rows are not the Current Edition have the following:
Second I'd like to be able to select the primary key of all the rows involved
Third I'd like to select all the primary keys of just the rows not in the current edition
Not really sure how to describe this without making a dataset
CREATE TABLE [Project].[TestTable1](
[TestTable1_pk] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[Source_ID] [int] NOT NULL,
[Edition_fk] [int] NOT NULL,
[Key1_fk] [int] NOT NULL,
[Key2_fk] [int] NOT NULL,
[Code] .....
Group by fails me because I only want the groups where the Edition_fk don't match...
Here is My requirement, I'm not sure if this is possible. Creating table called master like col1, col2 col3, col4 , col5 ...Where Col1, col2 are updatable - this can be done easily
Col3, col4 are columns in another table but these can be just a read only ?? Is this possible ? this is possible with View but not friendly with share point CRUD...Col 5 is a computed column of col 2 and col5 ? if above step can be done then sure this can be done I guess.
I have query which retrieves multiple column vary from 5 to 15 based on input parameter passed.I am using table to map all this column. If column is not retrieved in the dataset(I am not talking abt Null data but column is completely missing) then I want to hide it in my report.
Can I do that??
Any reply showing me the right way is appricited.
-Thanks,
Digs
Hi, all experts here,
Thanks a lot for your kind attention.
As I am creating the non-clustered indexes for the tables, I dont quite understand how dose it really matter to put the columns in the index key columns or put them into the included columns of the index?
I am really confused about that and I am looking forward to hearing from you and thank you very much again for your advices and help.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,
Here's another one of my bitchfest about stuff which annoy the *** out of me in SSIS (and no such problems in DTS):
Do you ever wonder how easy it was to set up text file to db transform in DTS - I had no problems at all. In SSIS - 1 spent half a day trying to figure out how to get proper column data types for text file - OF Course MS was brilliant enough to add "Suggest Types" feature to text file connection manager - BUT guess what - it sample ONLY 1000 rows - so I tried to change that number to 50000 and clicked ok - BUT ms changed it to 1000 without me noticing it - SO NO WONDER later on some of datatypes did not match. And boy what a fun it is to change the source columns after you have created a few transforms.
This s**hit just breaks... So a word about Derived Columns - pretty useful feature heh? ITs not f***ing useful if it DELETES SOME of the Code itself after there have been changes in dataflow. I cant say how pissed off im about that SSIS went ahead and deleted columns from flow & messed up derived columns just because the lineageIDs dont match.
Meta-data - it would be useful if you could change it and refresh it - im just sick and tired of it that it shows warnings and errors when there's nothing wrong - so after a change i need to doubleclick all my transforms so that those red & yellow boxes would disappear.
Oh and y I passionately dislike Derived columns - so you create new fields based on some data - you do some stuff - combine multiple columns to one, but you have no way saying remove the columns from the pipeline. Y you need it - well if you have 50K + rows with 30+ columns then its EXTRA useless memory overhead for your package.
Hopefully one day I will understand how SSIS works (not an ez task I say) - I might be able to spend more time on development and less time on my bitchfest - UNTIL then --> Another Day - Another Hassle with SSIS
Basically, I'm given a daily schedule on two separate rows for shift 1 and shift 2 for the same employee, I'm trying to align both shifts in one row as shown below in 'My desired results' section.
Sample Data:

UNION ALL SELECT 5060, '05/02/2015','13:30', '15:30'
[Code] ....
The results from the above are as follows:

My desired results with desired headers are as follows:

506004/30/2015 05:30 08:30 13:30 15:30

Hi,
I am planning to use transacational replication (instead of merge replication) on my SQL server 2000. My application is already live and is being used by real users.
How can I ensure that replicated data on different server would have exact same values of identity columns and date columns (where every I set default date to getdate())?
It is very important for me to have a mirror image of data (without using clustering servers).
Any help would be appreciated.

SQL Server 2000 SP4. Hoping to find a logical explanation for a certainbehavior.Consider this script:USE pubsGOIF 1 = ALL (SELECT contract FROM dbo.authors WHERE state = 'CA')PRINT 'TRUE'ELSEPRINT 'FALSE'This, as expected, prints FALSE, since not all authors in CA are undercontract. Now, if the script is changed as follows:USE pubsGOIF 1 = ALL (SELECT contract FROM dbo.authors WHERE state = '')PRINT 'TRUE'ELSEPRINT 'FALSE'then the result is TRUE. In other words, the expression evaluates to TRUEwhen the select statement produces an empty set, which doesn't make senseto me. Even more interesting, the expressionNULL = ALL (SELECT contract FROM dbo.authors WHERE state = '')still evaluates to TRUE (ANSI_NULLS is ON).Can anyone explain these results? Is this the expected behavior in the SQLstandard, or something that is specific to SQL Server? Thanks.--remove a 9 to reply by email

View 7 Replies View RelatedHi i would like to know how to empty the transaction log programmaticly.
Someone got a clue? :)
Hi, I have a SQL Server 6.50 - 6.50.415 (Intel X86) and one database has 8Gb of data and 2Gb of log, the problem is that
the log space used is never below 44%, even if I back it up this way:
DUMP TRANSACTION DBName TO DBNAME_log_930 VOLUME = 'SS0003' WITH NOUNLOAD , STATS = 10, INIT , NOSKIP
This should clean the log, right?
I check for open transactions via: dbcc opentran (GMS), but there aren't.
The way I check for the log space used is: dbcc sqlperf(logspace)
The recover interval is 5.
Any Ideas?

I'm bcp-ing a table to a file. I've noticed that if a varchar column is empty, that both "bcp -c" and "bcp -c -k" export the empty value as #$00. Instead, I'd like to export the value as if it were null.
use monkey
go
create table tab1 (
myColumn varchar(10) null
)
go
insert into tab1 (myColumn) values ('')
go
exec master..xp_cmdshell 'bcp monkey..tab1 out D:data.csv -c -T'
go
drop table tab1
go
I've been fiddling about with other switches but so far haven't come up with a solution other than writing out the full SELECT-statement or updating the original. Anyone with an easier solution?
hi everyone,
i was just wondering, is there anyway to empty a table...like, in mysql u can go EMPTY TABLE
and it resets the identity stuff, so your id's start at zero again...?

hello everyone,
am not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes.
We have a couple of clients we support running MS SQL, and as a rule, all db access is by SP and select statements.
However, we noticed earlier today, that a newly created account was empty. All columns except the users columns had been deleted.
1. Is there a way of checking which user account deleted the columns ?
2. Or finding out what went wrong ?
This has never happened before

Okay, so i have a procedure where i'm trying to build a left join, and for some
reason, if i store it into a procedure, it doesnt work, if i run it in query analyzer
i have no problem.

select @sql=@sql+' WHERE 1 = 1'
SELECT @sql = @sql + ' group by o.state_abbrv ORDER BY o.state_abbrv '
here is the procedure:
create PROCEDURE search_orders_11
@SPSirvarchar(3)= null,

DECLARE @sql nvarchar(4000),
@paramlist nvarchar(4000)

i get the whole command completed sucessfully, but no result. am i missing something here...
Hi,
I have to change collation for certain database. I think the only solution is to export or create through scripts the empty db structure (tables, PK & FK, defaults) and thereafter import data.
Since I don't have empty structure of this database I have to create somehow from the existing one which is with data, can somebody suggest how can I do this - take out the structure of the database from the db with data on it. I have 256 tables and I have to order them first with the dependencies of the tables?!
I will be really thankfull if somebody can help me on this issue.
Thnks,

Is there any way to sort your results in a way that the empty results comes last? When I sort my recordset on a certain column I first get the empty values and the A, B, C etc. I would like to have it A, B, C, ..., Empty ones.

I am trying to import Data from an Excel file to a SQL DB table. there are around 106 rows and 2 columns.
By default, the ssis is selecting around 200 columns and over 2000 rows. But all cells except for the 2 columns and 106 rows are empty. While I can specify that I need to read only 2 columns, I could not figure out a way to specify the rows. Any help?
I'm querying my database with a datetime constraint, only picking up records newer than the last ETL. Although I doubt it would ever happen I was going to put a check in the data flow to trap the case when NO rows were read due to inactivity in the OLAP. I set up a row count and tried to trap it. Apparently if you use an OLE DB source to get a result set and that result set is empty, the program flow bypasses everything and keeps running until it hits something causing an error, like an SQL Insert or Update command.
Is there any way to trap this condition? Currently it is going to cause the program to fail which will cause a snapshot restore (after kicking everyone out of the database).
Thanks.
