I am using Windows server 2012 Standard R2 and SQL Server 2014 Enterprise. I have created three AD Groups and added the groups to the SQL server:
Group A. Group B, and Group C. I have mapped each group to their database which I created on the same SQL server.
Now I have Group A mapped to Database A, Group B mapped to Database B, and Group C mapped to Database C.
Now all the users in all the groups can see each other databases, I need to give full permission to Group A for ONLY database A and NOT to allow them access Database B and C, also I need to do the same thing for the other two groups, this means each group can only access their database and not allowed to access other databases.

In NT MS suggests putting global groups into local groups and then assigning object permissions to those local groups in NTFS. I was wondering if this pattern should be followed in SQL server when assigning permissions to integrated login accounts. Is it better to use global groups or local groups?

today when i opened security manager it is saying no groups
in the security manager,security manager is blank.

( note :the production server is analysis sercvices 2000 and the stage server is analysis services 2005)

Hi,Apologies for not knowing much around this subject, we currently run sqlserver 2000 for a database and have each user marked up on the database.We are moving to use a windows security group, so taking themanagement slightly away from the database server.What I would like to know is, will this effect functions such assuser_sname() by returning the group name instead of user id? I wouldassume not but it's worth checking!Also, I'm guessing if a user is marked on the database as their own idand as part of a security group, then all permissions are thrown in withdeny taking preference? How does this work with a database owner who isalso part of a security group that has limiting functionality?Thanks for your help,Chris

I have a report running and I am attempting to assign role based security. I added a group to the site level security. The group I added contains child groups. It doesn't seem that report server is looking into the child groups to see if the logged in user is a member of the child group. Is there anyway to get this to work instead of adding all the groups directly? I suspect that report server is using cominterop and cominterop is not traversing the directory tree?

I have a subreport that contains a matrix with two groups. The report data seems to be inexplicably repeating the data for the first row in the group for all rows in the group. Example:

Is this a matrix bug in 2005 SP2, or do I need to do something differently? I can no longer pull a comparison version from an SSRS 2000 server to verify, but I believe it was working as expected before...

it works.
I'm running SQL Server 2005 and have a number of databases. What I want
to do is control access to each database via an Active Directory group.
The group has been setup in AD and users added. I've then gone into SQL
Management Studio and gone to the Security folder under the server and
then Logins and added the group. Within that I've then added
permissions to a specific database. All good so far, however when you
try to login to the database I get a Login failed error message. In
contrast if I add individual users to the security, Logins on SQL
Manager I can get the DB to open with a username and password box for
the specific user.
What I would like to know is:
How can I control access to SQL Databases using Active Directory
Security Groups?
What setup is required on the SQL side to allow access to the databases
from users in the security groups, but still require them to login with
their windows authentication?

We have just created a new Windows 2008 server running SQL 2005 64 bit. I am in the process of migrating old SQL 2000 databases onto this new server. One of the databases required a SQL login for some Windows groups that get created from the SMS software. I'm having a problem when I go into create a new login, select object type Groups, from this location , I enter the object name and click Check Names and it finds it. I select okay and everything looks good. But when I click ok on the New Login screen, I get the 15401 error saying that Windows NT user or group not found. I have gone into the Server Manager - Groups and verified that the group exists, and it does. The only thing I see when I click properties is on the bottom right had side of the screen it says "Changes to a user's group membership are not effective until the next time the user logs on." It says this for all the groups on this server and I get the same error message when I try to add any group. I have had the user that is a memeber of this group log off and back on a few times, but it still says the same thing and I still get the same error.
Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? Is there something on the Windows 2008 server setup that we missed?

We have a set of databases some are fully read-only others have read-only file groups, is there any way to restore backups of these taken on an MSDE 2000 to an SQL Express 2005 instance?
When doing the inplace upgrade we change these to read-write before the upgrade and set them back after the upgrade.
These databases are used in the field by customers althought the controlled upgrade requires a backup before (and blocks if it fails) and tries a backup after if the post upgrade backup fails (due to disk space) we might need to recover from this odd situation.
The only solution I have is install MSDE some place restore to this then do the controlled upgrade again, any other ideas?

I am having some problems with transactions, although it seems that the problem exists within the vb code making the db call it may be that sql is the source of the problem.

There is a number of stored procs that contain transactions most of which are inserts followed by a select statement to retrieve the most recently added ID. So to start with is a select the best way or is the @@Identity. I have read the @@Identity is global, so for a external server that is running a number of databases I stayed away from it. Did I take the right actions or is there a better way?
2.
Is having sql transactions within a call from vb.net ok? I know that the sqlClient class doesn't support nested transactions, but does that include transactions within sql?
3.
if a stored proc is called, from vb contained in a sqlClient transaction, are ALL the calls from within the sproc able to be rolled back?
If there is a reliable way to obtain the Identity without containing it in a transaction, and having the internal sql transactions in the problem, then I am home free, so I am hoping this is the case.

I went to Microsoft to find some info about the function Instr. I need to
perform a search with a string similar to their example I found below. Can
anyone explain to me Microsoft's example?? I am little confused by the
parameters used and the explanation it gives back to me??

My problem is this:
I need to scan within SearchString for blanks/spaces characters. When I
find one, then place the values to the left and right of it in seperate
columns. For example, I would need to scan 'John Smith A' and then place
'John' in FirstName column, 'Smith' in LastName column, and 'A' in MidName
column.
I think this is how my code would read, but I am confused on how to place
the results into my table to the correct columns?
my search string would be SearchString = 'John Smith A'
my SearchChar would be SearchChar = ' ' (note I am searching for a
space/blank character)
So would then my code be like:

We've read about a single installation of SSIS applies to all SQL instances on a server. We've also read how by default SQL Server stores SSIS packages in the MSDB database on the default instance and if you want to have packages stored on a named instance you must modify msdtssrvr.ini.xml. Here are our questions.
1 - If msdtssrvr is modified to reference a named instance, such as <ServerName>SQLTESTINST1<ServerName>, when I connect to Integration Services through Management Studio do I still specify the default instance name in the login window? That's the only way we have been able to connect and despite specifying the default instance name, the packages displayed are those of the named instance.
2 - If I am correct that you must always specify the default instance name when connecting to Integration Services, then in order to eliminate confusion regarding what SQL instance's SSIS packages I am viewing under the folder structure I can create SQL Server folders by modifying msdtssrvr.ini.xml. For example:

I am reading DataMining Tutorial and right now I am at the Mining Algorithms section. I cannot understand any of the algorithms. For example take the following text... what a bunch of mouthful bla bla bla it is ....
"The Microsoft Decision Trees algorithm supports both classification and regression and it works well for predictive modeling. Using the algorithm, you can predict both discrete and continuous attributes.
In building a model, the algorithm examines how each input attribute in the dataset affects the result of the predicted attribute, and then it uses the input attributes with the strongest relationship to create a series of splits, called nodes. As new nodes are added to the model, a tree structure begins to form. The top node of the tree describes the breakdown of the predicted attribute over the overall population. Each additional node is created based on the distribution of states of the predicted attribute as compared to the input attributes. If an input attribute is seen to cause the predicted attribute to favor one state over another, a new node is added to the model. The model continues to grow until none of the remaining attributes create a split that provides an improved prediction over the existing node. The model seeks to find a combination of attributes and their states that creates a disproportionate distribution of states in the predicted attribute, therefore allowing you to predict the outcome of the predicted attribute"
In the above text what is meant by discrete and continious attributes? what is regression? what is predicted attributes? what are input attributes? what is distribution of states?

The results we got are a model with intercept only. if we don't use the nested variable (the red line) we get a rigth model . (we had more variable ....)

The customer's goal is to via ReportBuilder to select fields from multiple
many-to-many relationships. They are able to see the fields that exists
within the various many-to-many relationships but IS ONLY able to select
fields from ONE many-to-many relationship. Example using AdventureWorks:
DataSourceView (relationships automatically generated by wizard)
Contact ---< VendorContact >--- Vendor
Contact ---< StoreContact >--- Store
Contact ---< ContactCreditCard >--- CreditCard
So the goal in the ReportBuilder is to be able select fields from
Contact/Vendor/Store/ and CreditCard.
PROBLEM is that the ReportBuilder ONLY allows user to select fields from
Contact/Vendor OR Contact/Store OR Contact/CreditCard (exclusively)
The only workaround I've found is to reverse the relationships in the
DataSourceView to the following
Contact >--- VendorContact ---< Vendor
Contact >--- StoreContact ---< Store
Contact >--- ContactCreditCard ---< CreditCard
This works however we need an explanation as to why it only works this way?
