Export To Excel Error Throws System.OutOfMemoryException
May 15, 2008
Hi,
My server configuration is
Intel Xeon(R) X5355 @ 2.66GHz, 3.75 GB RAM
Win 2k3
I have been receiving the above mentioned error when I try to use the out of the box feature of "Export To Excel" provided in the Reporting Services, the reports are hosted on MOSS 2007 using the Reporting Services Add-In. The number of pages generated by the report is 500+, so I don't think exporting a report of around 500 - 1000 should give out a memory exception since we have sufficient RAM on the server.
Please advice a solution to solve the error.
Thanks in Advance.
Vikas Mestry.

Hi I have an issue while attempting to clean/build my Integration Services solution which prevents me creating my deployment SSIS deployment package.
The solution comprises of around 73 packages totally a physical file size of 103 MB. Most packages are ~1/2 MB with a ~1/2 packages around the 4/5/6 MB
I cannot seem to clean or build/rebuild the solution as I keep getting the following exception message
Error 1 Error loading €˜PACKAGE_NAME.dtsx' : Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.. C:FOLDER1PACKAGE_NAME.dtsx 1 1
This randomly occurs with different packages but the commonality is it occurs with the package above 4MB.
My workstation has Windows XP Professional with SP2 and 2GB RAM and Visual Studio 2005 with SP1 and SQL Server 2005 with SP2.
A look at task manager in Windows shows the devenv.exe process to be ~675MB when the above exception occurs. There are no other applications running in the background.
Can anybody kindly suggest any possible resolutions or any known fixes for this problem? Maybe the possible to build SSIS packages from a command prompt?
Many Thanks in advance

I am trying to load a XML file into a string variable using a XML Task. The file is 67,936 KB. When I excecute the package in the dev environment I get the following error:
[XML Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.".
Has anybody run into this before? In the next step I pass the XMLData string to a stored procedure which loads it into a table with a XML data type column.

Recently upgraded SQL Server 2005 x64 to SP2 and upto Build 3159. Since then the Maintenance Plan for Index Reorgs has failed with a System.OutOfMemoryException error. No other errors are logged anywhere. The plan report file has no information either.
Has anybody come across a similar issue?
Thank you.

All,
I have a large package (I know the recommendation is to have one package per data flow.) It has 20+ data flows in it. Personally I have found it much too complex to manage dozens of packages just because I want to have more than one data flow in my package.
I have been working on this package in an iterative manner over the past several months. Recently, I noticed I started getting the error message: "Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown" when I went to save my package. This is _extremely_ frustrating, because when this happens, all the changes I have made are generally lost. Occasionally, I have noticed if I close some other BIDS windows, or just wait a bit, I will be able to click save again, and it will actually save. Usually, I am forced to just "end-task" Visual Studio.
Other than splitting the package up into 20 separate packages, is there a way around this problem? I would rather put up with the lost changes than switch to dealing with 20 separate packages. It just makes things to difficult to manage when everything is split up into so many packages - particularly when I am passing variables around from parent to child packages.
Please help!
Thanks,
David Baldauff

I am using VWD2005 and SQLExpress 2005. In web.config I define the connection:<connectionStrings>
<add name="ProFeeRevenueUser" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|ProFeeRevenue.mdf; Initial Catalog=ProFeeRevenue;User Id=whomever;Password=whatever" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
When I try this code in a class (util.cs), I get an error on trying to open the connection:System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection cn = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ProFeeRevenueUser"].ConnectionString);
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand cmd = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand("usp_UserSystemRolesListByUser", cn);System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader dr;
try
{cmd.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure;
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter retValParm = cmd.Parameters.Add("@RowCount", System.Data.SqlDbType.Int);retValParm.Direction = System.Data.ParameterDirection.ReturnValue;cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@UserLogin", userLogin);
cn.Open(); // error occurs here <<----------------------------
dr = cmd.ExecuteReader();if (dr.HasRows)
{while (dr.Read() == true)
{string MyRole = dr[1].ToString().Trim();
SystemRoles.Add(MyRole);
}
dr.Close();
}
It works fine if I point to a SQL server database on my server, but not with SQLExpress, so I assume I have done something wrong with the connection string or the SQL Express database. Any ideas?

I have found out that my UPDATE statement throws an exception : "System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format."
For testing purpos I created a simple table in my SQL server containing columns "id" (identity) and "test"(varchar50) and populated 2 rows with data.
SELECTing from the database is ok, so the connection should be fine (connectionstring = server=localhost;database=test;user=sa;)
The update that throws the exception is : "UPDATE test SET test = 'updating' WHERE id = 1"
The same statement is ok in the SQL Query analyser - can anyone help on why this is not the correct format for the UPDATE?

Hi,
I got an strange problem with one of my packages.
When running the package in VisualStudio it runs properly, but if I let this package run as part of an SQL-Server Agent job, I got the message "The script threw an exception: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown." on my log and the package ends up with an error.
Both times it is exactly the same package on the same server, so I don't know how the debug or even if there is anything I need to debug?

No Error but Export to Excel does not finish
When the report has 2 pages with total 500 rows exporting to Excel is not a problem.
If it has 100 pages 5000 rows exporting to excel does not end and it does not return any error but the process does not end either. What might the problem be?

Hi All,
We are using the SSRS 2005 for developing reports. In that I have some problems/doubts.
My problems are:
I developed / designed the report using the SSRS 2005. And I uploaded the reports in to the report server. I can able to view the reports in the preview section as well thro the browser.
Problem 1:
Reports are having the huge amount of data (For: report is having > 800 Pages). So, when ever I am trying to export in to EXCEL that time I am getting MemoryOutOfException. If I having the less number of pages that time I getting the result. How I can export the report into excel with out MemoryOutOfException.
Problem 2:
Some Excel sheets are having more data for ex: 75000. In EXCEL it self we are having the limitation we can not create more than 65536 rows per sheet. So If I want to export these 75000 records into excel how I do it.
Problem 3:
For delivering the reports I am using file share subscription method in SSRS. For example my reports are having the huge amount of data. That time I getting the following status in report server €œFailure writing file Weekly Install Base Report @timestamp: An error occurred during rendering of the report.€?"
Software Platform:
1. SQL Server Reporting Services 2005
2. SQL Server 2000 Data base
3. Microsoft Office 2003

Hi I generate a report successfully in SQL reporting services .
I goto the http://localhost/Reports link and I select the report I want and it renders in the browser window. Once the report is generated I then select the export option to export it
to excel
I then get this error message( see below) after waiting about 20 mins or longer
for the excel file to be generated.
There is a lot of data in this report . There is 1240 pages and there
is about 50 rows for each page. That makes it 62000 rows in the
report.
I'm using excel 2007 on my pc. I've updated sql server 2005 to sp2.
Is there some limitation to the amount of data you can export to
excel.??
Looking at the errors in the logfiles on the server I see I got the error
Connection_Dropped DefaultAppPool . This seems to be an IIS related error after searching for it on the internet.
Is there some setting I can change in IIS to handle the extra volume of data.
After doing some more tests I can export the reports that have small amounts of data to excel.
However I keep getting this timeout problem when the volume of data gets quite large.
I also noticed that when the reports server is trying to export the report to an excel file you can't access the url of any other website hosted by IIS on that particular server.
any ideas?
Or is there any known limitations in doing the above??
thanks in advance
Aidan Geraghty

I was hoping someone could help out with this issue....I've got a report I created in Reporting Services 2000 SP2 where I am nesting table elements within the row and detail sections of the matrix. This allows me to have multiple items within my "row" data with column headings, and works perfectly fine within the designer, and viewer, and whenever I export it to any format other than Excel. Exporting to excel results in a "Specified cast is not valid" error.
To me this seems to be a bug in the Excel rendering extension, since it seems to be supported in RDL. Has anyone else run into this? Is there a fix to the renderer or a workaround that anyone is aware of?
I'd be happy to post the RDL if anyone is interested.
Thanks,
Casey

In this data flow task, I have an OLE DB source. This source uses above mentioned connection.
When this data flow task is not a part of transaction, it works fine. But when I set "TransactionOption" property to "Required", the OLE DB source returns following error.
[OLE DB Source [1]] Error: The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "databasename" failed with error code 0xC001A004.
I have checked Distributed Transaction Cordinator running. I have some other package running fine which uses transactions but does have OLE DB source.
I have also tried setting "RetainSameConnection" property of a connection to TRUE. But still it is failing.
In short, I am not able to execute OLE DB source in side transaction.
Please guide.
Thanks,

When I open the spreadsheet in Excel 2000, it works fine. When I try to print, it crashes Excel. In testing, I narrowed it down to the Header/Footer, because it also crashes when I go to Page Setup and click on the header/footer tab.
However, I can print the same spreasheet from Excel 2007.
Am I just dealing with a "you need to upgrade all your clients" situation, or is there a known issue with certian formatting that is passed out with reports that is not supported by older versions of Excel?
I am using Reporting Services 2005 SP2 to serve up the report that is exported to Excel.
Any assistance is appreciated.

I call the datareader using a sqlCommand that I programmatically build and it accesses the database fine. I can use the exact SQL command that I generate and I can get a result when i run it in SQL Management Studio. When I run the application and try to access the datareader, it throws an exception whose message is quite frustratingly, <column name>, or in this case "image_URL". Anyone have any idea what might be causing such an ambiguous error?

Hi,
I have a small program to query a stored procedure in SQL Server 2000 and print out the contents of a returned date field. The program is as follows:
Class.forName("com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver");
String connectionUrl = "jdbcqlserver://host:1433;database=db;user=u1;password=p1";
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(connectionUrl);
CallableStatement cbstmt = con.prepareCall(" {call stored_proc (?,?)}");
cbstmt.setString(1, "value1");
cbstmt.setString(2, "value2");
ResultSet resultSet = cbstmt.executeQuery();
while (resultSet.next()) {
System.out.println(resultSet.getDate("end_date"));
}
The date field is nullable, and the records in the database are currently null. But when I run this program, I get the following exception when using version 1.2 of the MS JDBC Driver:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The conversion from int to DATE is unsupported.

This started happening when we upgraded to the new driver. Any ideas why?
Thanks.

Hi all,
we've been having this ancient database with old accounting data running in suspect mode since as long as I can remember (I started working here a year ago), and finally I had some time on my hands so I thought I'd try to get it online again. However I'm running in to problems:
DBCC CHECKDB (myDBName) gives this error:
Msg 926, Level 14, State 1, Line 1
Database 'myDBName' cannot be opened. It has been marked SUSPECT by recovery. See the SQL Server errorlog for more information.
Running sp_helpdb only does not display the suspect database and sp_helpdb 'myDBName' gives this error even though I'm a system administrator:
No permission to access database 'myDBName'.
It's possible that I might be able to dig up a backup but that would be quite tedious. Is it possible to bring the database to a state where I'm able to do a CHECKDB at least...?
