Express 2005: How To Makes Changes Without Stopping The Web Site?

Jan 24, 2008

Are there any way I can make changes to my database without stopping the web site? I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express for my web shop. And each time I have to add or change a table or Stored Procedure I have to stop the site. What I do is to stop the web site (in IIS), restart the IIS and then open the database in the SQL Server 2005 Express Management tool. If I don't "release" the file first I get an error when I try to open the database file in the Management tool.
But there must be a better way to do things? I also would like to take bacup of the database without stopping the site, but how? There must be others that have had the same problems?

Regards, Sigurd

Multi Site Using SQL Express 2005

Oct 21, 2006

Hi,
I am writing Stock inventory and POS application.
POS will be used at multiple branches to collect sales, whereby Stock Inventory will be used in HQ for product info maintenance, stock in and etc.

I need to send all of the branch sales records back to HQ and send updated product info such as cost to branches everyday (could be multiple times per day).

I am thinking to use SQL Server Express 2005 at branches and SQL Server 2005 standard at HQ.

Do you think it is workable? What is the mechanism I can use to "transfer" these data?

Please advice.

Thank you

What Happens To My SQL Express When I Post My Site To Full SQL 2005 Server

Jan 9, 2006

Lets say I use the 'enabling roles' for my ASP 2.0 site. This creates a ASPNETDB.DBF SQL Express file.
Later I go to post this to a real web server - which runs the 'full' MS SQL2005 server. What happens to the ASPNETDB.MDF file (or for that matter, any other MDF file I create with SQL Express) when it leaves the Express world and enters the Real world.

SQL Server 2005 Express And ASP.NET Web Site Administration Tool Problem.

Mar 31, 2006

I installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, I can login to it just fine using SQL Server Management Studio Express. I ran the aspnet_regsql and it created the aspnetdb database. But when I try to test the AspNetMembershipProvider or go to the Security tab in the ASP.NET Web Site Administration Tool it does not work. I have tried messing with the connectionString of the LocalSqlServer in the machine.config, but to no avail. My SQL Server is installed on the Default Instance. Can someone help me get ASP.NET Web Site Administrator to work with my SQL Server 2005 Express Edition?

SQL Express Database In Published Web Site

Mar 26, 2007

I have been working with Visual Studio 2005 and the Personal Web Site Starter Kit. All is well and working. My problem is that after the database is updated (as in uploading photos and album creation) and the original web site is edited and republished, the web site database is overwritten and all the work is lost. What is the proceedure to either copy the web database to the development site on my computer so updates will not be lost, or a method of publishing that will not loose the up to date content on the web server? I would much prefer to be able to copy the database to my development computer as adding tables to the database is something that needs to be done. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hi,

Plz help!

I built a web site using IIS and ASP.NET 2.0.

My web site has a log on screen and I only configured it with one user without any roles. This web site uses the SQL EXPRESS.(I Have 2 databases: 1 for the security required by the application and the other for my application. for the connectionstring I used a windows authentication security with an instance = true.)

Everything went well on my PC.

When I tried to deploy the web site on another PC, there was a big problem.

When I tried to login with the same user I created, then I have a problem.

The password is incorrect(Why? I don't know).

Maybe there is a problem with the IIS or with the SQL SERVER.

Problem Remotely Stopping And Starting Services In SQL Server 2005

Sep 11, 2007

Hi guys

I've been dealing with a few problems with SQL Server 2005.

We don't want to give our DBA's local administrator access to the servers so we had a problem with SSIS which I managed to resolve by adding their global group into the local DCOm group and modifying the security properties of MsDtsServer.

Another problem I've come across is when you log into Management Studio as an account that has local administrator access to the server you have the Green symbol next to the registered server, you can then right click and Stop, Restart services etc.

If I log into Management Studio with an account that has full SQL sysadmin rights but not local administrator rights to the server then the Green symbol doesn't appear and the Stop, restart options are all greyed out - all other functionality appears okay, they just seem to lose the ability to remotely stop and start services.

All of the above is with Windows Firewall turned off, if the user has local administrator rights but the SQL Server has the Windows Firewall switched on they are unable to remotely stop and restart services.

Port 1433 is open on the firewall and program execptions are there for sqlbrowse.exe

Anyone come across this particular problem before?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hanley

All are pretty familiar with sql server and have experience with SQL 2000. So, it should not be for beginners. Intermediate and advance topics.

Whom you can suggest? Do you have experience with them?

Edited Data Won't Propagate Back To The Database (VB 2005 Express && SQL Server 2005 Express)

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.

When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the

Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)

I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Thanks,
Ieyasu

How To Apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 To The Version Of SQL Server 2005 Express Which Installs With Visual Studio 2005?

Aug 8, 2006

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.

How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?

Currently, if I run this query:

SELECT @@version

I get the following:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)

After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.

Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:

How To Makes Sum In Sql

Set Rss = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.RecordSet")
sSQL= "SELECT array(sum(numitems)) from oitems where orderid= " & ord
Rss.Open sSQL, sDSN, adOpenStatic, adLockReadOnly, adCmdText

Actually I want to make an array of the sum of items with the same numitems (i.e. the same productnumber)

if the sql runs I will write the array like this:

Why Can't I Get SQL Express 2005 And VB Studio Express 2005/2008to Work Together?

Feb 22, 2008

This is what I have done.

1. Installed VB.NET IDE 2008 and SQL Server Compact 2005. IDE requires upgrade of database to 3.0 version which I allowed it to do. After the database was upgraded, I did an amount of coding work in the IDE and then tried to go back to do more database work in SQL. However the database then could not be opened in SQL Server Compact 2005. An error said that because it had been upgraded, it could not be read. It was requiring me to run 'upgrade.exe'. I had no idea what this meant and could find no upgrade available online.
2. Removed VB.NET IDE 2008 and installed 2005 instead. However, the file extension on the SQL Server Compact database is .sdf, but the IDE is requiring a .mdf extension. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to save or to have the desired extension, but I cannot.

Questions:

1. Do SQL Express 2005 and VB Studio Express 2008 work together?
2. If so, how?

It seems as though application each requires a different version of the database. If the database is usable in one, it is not usable in another.

Thanks for the help.

Why Minor Diff Makes Big Lag

The DB Enginee is SQL2005 SP1. In MSSMS

the following query always finishes within 1 minute

SELECT *

where t1.StartTime >= '3/19/2008' AND t1.EndTime <= '3/20/2008'
AND t2.StartTime >= t1.StartTime AND t2.StartTime < t1.EndTime

however, the following always takes 10+ minutes
declare @pStartDate datetime
declare @pEndDate datetime
set @pStartDate='3/19/2008'
set @pEndDate='3/20/2008'
SELECT *
FROM t1 INNER JOIN t2 ON t1.key= t2.key
where t1.StartTime >= @pStartDate AND t1.EndTime <= @pEndDate
AND t2.StartTime >= t1.StartTime AND t2.StartTime < t1.EndTime

Both return same result. The only diff. is the blue part. Why the second one performances so badly?
Thanks.

In Outter Joins, What Makes A Table Either Right Or Left?

Dec 16, 2002

Until today, I was always under the impression that left vs. right was determined by which side of the comparison operator the table was located.

In other words:
LEFT JOIN LeftTable.ID = RightTable.ID

would pull all the records from LeftTable and those that matched from from RightTable and that:

RIGHT JOIN RightTable.ID = LeftTable.ID

would pull exactly the same result set but I was wrong. So, if it is not the table position in relation to the comparison operator, is it simply that the tables listed first in the FROM clause aren the ones "Left" of those subsequently entered?
