Could somebody explain to me how does database security in the SQL Server Express environment works? It would seem that there has to be some level of "interplay" between the user's basic level of authority in Windows security on the machine (e.g., "Adminstrator" vs. "User"), the implications that that has on their level of access to the hard drive location where the database file is stored, and how security is configured within the database engine.

Hi All,
I have a application having SQL Express as database. As the application will be installed on the client system, probably a server as per the user requirements, I require that the database cannot be accessed by anyone. As we know that the mdf and ldf files can be taken away by anyone and they can get the database structure as well as the data from database.
e.g. I install this application on one server, now any technical person can easily take a backup and install it on another server or can get the script of the database even if the db owner user id and password are blocked by me.
Please suggest me how can I block such action so that the database design and data cannot be accessed by any one outside the development team. I don't want the database schema to be revelead to anyone as it can harm the products information security.

We are releasing an application built on SQL Server Express in the next few months. Our clients are mostly small companies with little technical knowledge, and they will be using our application on desktop computers where everyone likely logs in as the same user. As such, my thinking is that we setup SQL Server Express as in SQL Server Authentication mode. This way they could select an Administrator password upon first installation, and manage user names and passwords from within the application itself.

I've built this prototype web app in asp.net 2.0
it uses a sql server express database.
It uses the database to populate a grid control.
It works when I run it from my pc when I
1). run it in debug mode.
2) right click a page in the vs2005 IDE and browse
3). browse a page from the IIS snap in
it doesn't work from other peoples PC on our intranet say if someone types:

Is there a way to implement Access-like password protection on a SQL Server Express dataset?
The database will be deployed on individual's PCs with no centralization of control. I want to restrict users from being able to see table definitions, stored procedures, etc. Access-like password protection is what I want, but I don't see any similar feature within SQL Server Express. Am I missing something?

Hi,
I'm quite new to SQL Server Express and am having trouble with security. I have SQL Server Express installed on one of our servers and want to limit access to this instance of SQL Server, and basically grant access to only certain users within our organisation. However it seems that by default everyone can connect to SQL Server.
First of all I enabled local and remote connections. I did not grant anyone access permissions under Logins, and then went back to my workstation and tried to connect to the instance of SQL Server using SQL Server Management Studio which I have installed locally. I presumed and hoped that it would come up with a message saying that I don't have access permissions to connect to SQL Server, but instead it let me connect and even create a new database.
I then went back to the server and changed EACH Login to Deny under Login Properties -> Status -> Permission to connect to Database Engine. Then I returned to my client and tried to connect again and it still succeeds and allows me to create/delete tables/ databases/etc.
Can someone please explain why this is? If any more details are required to answer this question let me know.

Is there anyway to really keep replicated SQL Server 2005 Express data secure when it is on a laptop and the laptop is stolen or lost. What would prevent someone from just reinstalling SQL Server on the laptop and attaching your database, or just attaching your mdf file to their own SQL Server. Is there anyway to keep that data secure in that scenerio?

I installed SQLE 2005 on vista home prem, and when I go to the studio and attempt to create a database, I get the message below. I am running under an admin account, but the system sees me as a standard user.
Do I need to re-install and tell the system to allow me to log on via. an ID/PW?
Is there a vista patch?
Should I re-install XP?
Also, not having this issue with the same SQLE version and an XP machine.

Hi,I have a ASP.net 2.0 web app which i want to run on IIS. It has a database file stored in APP_DATA folder. I have set "UserInstance" property to False, as want to access the same database file from another app, which can do its own modification. So basically i want the same database to be shared. Now after putting the web app on IIS i am getting error like :Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.Any idea of how to solve this?

I tried DDL trigger but Audit doesn't support triggers. In SSMS, I connect Object Explorer to a partially contained database using a contained user login with password. This user has a database role of dbdatareader. When I try to expand the Tables in the database, I get the error:Â

I had created 2 Sql server instance in 2 servers created using VMware. From the primary server I log shipped the required databases into the secondary. Both the servers were in the same domain whose active directory was also in another server in the same virtual lab environment. My question can we have the primary sql server in one domain and the secondary sql server to which the logs are shipped in another domain by including a router also between the 2 networks for connectivity?

I have installed new SQLServer2012 instance and my domain user have sysadmin privileges on this instance. I have a restore procedure and it will execute WITH EXECUTE AS 'domainmy username', for all the developers have exec permissions to this procedure. But newly installed server this procedure was failing with the following message. But the same procedure executing fine on other servers.

Hi All,
I have noticed in the database logs that someone is trying to log
into our SQL Server express databases, is there a way of allowing only IP
address on a list to access the database. We really only need the local machine
and the office using SQL Express management studio to access the database.
I would appreciate any help sometimes the database runs very
slow and we do not know what is causing this.
We are running server 2003 and SQL Server express.

I have a script that automates some db drop/restore operations and bringing the database to single user mode is part of it: ALTER DATABASE ... SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE...I want this to executes under a login, that has restricted privileges, so I've created a login and granted it a dbcreator role + ALTER ANY DATABASE privileges.
Problem: When I run the script against a database with an active/sleeping connection:It fails when using the restricted login: "Msg 5061...ALTER DATA BASE failed because a lock could not be placed on database ..."It completes successfully when using a sysadmin login According to stackoverflow.com the solution is to kill the active/sleeping connections to the database, before ALTER-ing it, which works fine, but the question is....
Questions: Why the "ALTER DATABASE..." statement works under the sysadmin login, but not under a dbcreator one?Does this mean the sysadmin login kills the connections to the target database in the background?Is it possible to grant additional privileges to the restricted login, so the "ALTER DATABASE..." statement won't need preventive killing of the connections?

i have a development database that has updates and changes to a production database. rather than go through individually and alter all relevant tables and stored procedures, id like to back up the database on the development side and restore it on the production side as the production database. is there a way to restore the database on the production server but preserve all the security settings (ie logins and such)? i noticed on our development server, that if i try to restore the database with my development database, it overwrites the users and/or if the user is the same on both, it removes the login name for that user.

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I have VC++ express and MSSQL SMS express and have an application working nicely locally. The Data explorer and data connections part works really easily.
Now, I want to make the application available to my home network.
I mapped the drive where the database is and called it Z: so I could put my "release" on my other network PC and assumed it would find Z: if I mapped the shared network drive on that machine and called it Z:
But: I can't even add the mapped connection on the local machine, I get:
The file "Z:databasescalorie.mdf" is on a network path not supported for database files. An attempt to attach.....etc"
It works fine on the original F drive.......
Am I approaching this the wrong way. How should I distribute to network PCs?

Hi,
I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum.
Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it.
I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list.
As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?

I get an error dialog when I try to create a new SQL database, both via the Add New Item dialog and the property wizard of a new SqlDataSource control. The error is:
Local Database File:
User does not have permission to perform this action.
I've searched for help with this.
I ensured the App_Data folder exists and I added the local ASP.NET account to the group that have R/W access to it (although the RO flag is in an unchangeable tri-state on the folder).
The SQL Server Express error log is clean and indicates full functionality.
Everything is running locally.
No VWD installation errors.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I have just built a new SQL7 server (SQL SP3 and NT SP6a) server and need a bit of advice on implementing database security.
This new SQL server will be used by several projects which require a SQL database, our Personnel system being one of them. Since the data in the Personnel system is obviously of a sensitive nature I need to restrict access to the data. Client access is controlled via a client application but I need to restrict Enterprise Manager, Query analyzer ... type of access.
We have a team of people who look after the servers on a day to day basis and these are all Domain Administrators. By default these people will be able to browse into the Personnel database and read the information.
How can I restrict access to a SQL database so that only named users (SQL and NT) can access a database ? If database level access is required then we would need to obtain the SQL user password from Personnel which will then allow mainenance access, after which the password si changed by Personnel.
Any thoughts ?

What is the standard for database security – windows login or sql server logins? User defined database roles?
We have earlier used a single sql server login with read/write permissions to tables & exec on stored procedures. Individual application users are stored in database tables & their permissions are handled by the application itself. But we are starting to get concerned about password issues with the sql login & also that when I see any connections on the database, all of hem show up with the same sql login. So I cannot make out which user exactly has a connection open.
To get around these issues, we are thinking to add NT logins for each user. These users will be part of an NT group and will be added as a user to the database. There will be a database role with exec permissions to required stored procedures (all read/write/update will be controlled through SPs) and the NT group will be part of this role. The stored procedures will be encrypted. So if a NT user logs in directly to the database, he won’t be able to read from the tables or SPs and access will be limited through the application.
I will be able to see each login associated with a connection.
What do you all think about this security set up? What are other issues I need to be concerned about? What are other popular database security models?
