Express To Standard Upgrade

Jan 31, 2007

I have SQL Server 2005 Express that was installed with SharePoint Server 2007. I'm trying to upgrade it to SQL Server 2005 Standard edition and it gives this "Edition Change Check (Warning)" message:

"To change an existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to a different edition of SQL Server 2005, you must run SQL Server 2005 Setup from the command prompt and include the SKUUPGRADE=1 parameter."

I tried "setup skuupgrade=1" from the command prompt, but it's giving me the same message.

Can someone tell me how to correctly make the upgrade?

Upgrade From Express To Standard....

Sep 24, 2007

Good day all, I apologize if this is somewhere and I didnt search enough. I currently have a nice internal application that provides company wide visibility into some key data. Im now being asked to create some reports from an Oracle 9i platform in SQL 2005 Reports Server. However the ORACLE data extension is not allowed in the express edition so Im stuck for a moment. I would like to do an inplace upgrade of my existing MS SQL server from 2005 express to 2005 standard. However, I am a little concerned it might break some things. Has anyone achieved this with great results, a mixed bag, or totally blown up their server? I would like to know the good, bad and then down right ugly details of this if there are any. I am currently running a windows 2003 server with MS SQL 2005 Express (Advanced edition to get the Report Server in there). Is it at all possible to do an inplace upgrade from Express to Standard edition and not lose any connectivity permissions, reports server and so on? Would there be 2 seperate installations one for SQL Server and another for the Report server?
Thanks in advance for all your replies, Ive used this forum on many occasions and learned alot along the way. I hope someone here can help.

Upgrade Express Instance Officeservers To Standard

Feb 26, 2008

Hi

I want to Upgrade my express instance "Officeservers" to standard. I have installed Sql Server 2005 standard, but
the MOSS 2007 installs default Officeservers to express. The reason to upgrade is to use the maintenance plans to backup the instance. I have a report server on a different instance (standard).

Do I upgrade with SKUUPGRADE=1 and this is all ?
Do I need to run sp2 after this and does this affect my report server ?

Thanks for your help.

Upgrade Express 2005 SP2 To Standard Edition

Dec 14, 2007

Hi Guys,

Having some problems Upgrading from SQL Express 2005 SP2 to SQL 2005 Standard. I'm getting the following:

Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

Build version check:

Your upgrade is blocked because the existing component is a later version than the version you are trying to upgrade to. To modify an existing SQL Server component, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, select the component you would like to modify, and then click Change/Remove.

Pretty sure that I have to have SQL 2005 Std w/SP2 but I don't have a CD with it on. Is there a way that I can create one so that I can upgrade the SQL Instance In-Place.

Thanks in advance
Michael

Upgrade SQL 2000 Standard To SQL 2005 Express

Jan 17, 2008

Hi,

I am hiring a server at a hosting company. This server contains a dozen websites that i made and they all have their own database.
Well, i received a message from my hosting company that they go to remove the SQL 2000 Standard and replace it by SQL 2005 Express.
What do I have to think about that? Can this give database connection problems?

Thanks for your answers.

Upgrade Problems Express 2005 To Standard Edition

Feb 14, 2007

Just bought the SQL server 2005 standard edition software to replace the express edition that I have been running for the last 6 months.

The setup works fine until I ask it to install the management studio.

At this stage it seems to think that I have a newer version already installed and tells me that it won't upgrade it.

I then wend through the add/remove sotware function in control panel and removed everything to do with SQL server and tried again. The same thing happened.

Any ideas what I should try next ??

Upgrade From SQL Express 2005 Report Server With Advanced Services To SQL 2005 Standard Fails

Feb 25, 2008

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:

SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.

After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.

I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

In addition is it a complete installations which remains the current configuration? (i guess this because we have to apply all service packs again)?

and at least - is a license upgarde possible or do we have to buy a complete new licence?

Upgrade From Standard 64bit To Enterprise 64 Bit Issues

Jan 30, 2008

The upgrade works fine if the instance starts on SP2. But the instance has the hotpatch applied and is running build 3200. When I try the upgrade against the 3200 version it errors out with the following message:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]The certificate cannot be dropped because one or more entities are either signed or encrypted using it.. To continue, correct the problem, and then run SQL Server Setup again.

My question is:
if I upgrade from standard to enterprise on Version: 9.00.3042 it upgrade perfectly well but if I try to upgrade from Version: 9.00.3200 version, it gives the error message.

let me know if anyone can solve the issue at cqldba@gmail.com

SQL 2000 Enterprise Upgrade To SQL 2005 Standard

Feb 12, 2008

Hi All

I'm after some advice, I am looking for the best way to do this:

I have a SQL 2000 Clustered Virtual Instance which is of course Enterprise Edition as it is clustered. I need to upgrade to 2005, but dont need the 2005 Enterprise features, Standard will do, as this supports clustering.

The restrictions are that you cant upgrade 200Ent to 2005Std.

As this is a fairly complex environment, it has a default instance running on node 1 and a named instance running on node 2
I dont particularly want to uninstall both 2000 instances, and then install new 2005 instances

So is it possible to upgrade to 2005 ent, and then downgrade to standard. I have seen a suggestion without any details, that there is an undocumented sp, sp_update_resume, that might do this. Does anyone know about this

Or does anybody have any other suggestions. (the names of the instances have to be the same, as the existing instances)

Thanks in advance

Tom

Upgrade From SQL Server 2005 Developer To Standard Edition?

Jan 29, 2008

Hi,

Has anyone tried an in-place upgrade from SQL Server 2005 Developer to Standard Edition?

It apears to be a valid upgrade path according to this:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx

Is it just a case of changing the registered licensing info? (I presume all the functionality for Standard exists in the Developer Edition) Or is it a reinstall job?

I want to use a dev license for development on the server, then once its finished, just leave it in place on the box and upgrade the licensing to standard edition. (The client doesn't yet have a Standard License, but does have a Dev License - and wants me to start right away!)

If its going to boil down to having to do a full re-installation then I should get a Standard license from the start, if its just a minor license key change, then I can use a Dev license straight away!

Pls. help. Thank you!

Your Upgrade Is Blocked.. When Adding Components To SQL 2005 Standard Edition SP1

Sep 28, 2006

Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools

Hello,

I am having a problem when trying to add the Client Components to an existing installation of SQL 2005 Standard Edition SP1 running on Windows 2003 Standard. The server was originally built with SQL 2005 Standard Edition and had SP1 installed at a later date. I am using the CD that SQL was originally installed with which is not a service packed copy of SQL. The reason given when clicking the details button is as follows:

Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

Build version check:

Your upgrade is blocked because the existing component is a later version than the version you are trying to upgrade to. To modify an existing SQL Server component, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, select the component you would like to modify, and then click Change/Remove.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Upgrade SQL 2005 Evaluation To Workgroup/Standard Without Uninstalling: Supported?

Jan 25, 2007

Hi, all. I see two conflicting notes about whether one can install the SQL Server 2005 Trial/Evaluation and then upgrade to Workgroup or Standard editions, without uninstalling the Evaluation edition.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx seems to say YES, you can upgrade to Workgroup/Standard from the Evaluation edition.

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.mspx says NO, you can only upgrade to Enterprise edition from the Evaluation edition. For Workgroup and Standard, you must uninstall the Trial first.

Which is the correct answer?

Thanks,

SQL Server 2005 Standard Eval Upgrade To Licensed Version

Sep 13, 2007

Hi All,

I have been using the 180 day evaluation version of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and I have my license key now for the purchased version. I read on the Microsoft site I am able to upgrade to the non-trial version without uninstalling the eval version. But for Standars Edition Microsoft states:

"... If upgrading to the fully licensed version of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition, Workgroup Edition, or Developer Edition, it is recommended that you uninstall the 180-day trial version of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition before installing the fully licensed version of the other editions..."

Is there anyway out where I don't need to uninstall my eval database server?
If it is necessary to uninstall eval version, then what is the best way to preserve all my current databases?

Thanks,
Sumit

SQL 2005 Standard To Enterprise Edition Upgrade On Existing Three-node Cluster

Jun 10, 2007

Current set-up: three node cluster running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 with two instances of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition SP2.

Virtual node 1: Standard Edition, default instance, Database Engine only

Virtual node 2: Standard Edition, named instance, Database Engine, Analysis Services and Integration Services

Physical node A: Prefered node for virtual node 1

Physical node B: Failover node for both virtual node 1 and 2 (thus having two installations of Standard Edition)

Physical node C: Prefered node for virtual node 2

We started off with this set-up because there was no need for Enterprise features, and SQL 2005 supports failover clustering with two nodes in Standard Edition. Saved a bundle of cash, so everybody's happy. Now we need to run a solution on virtual node 2 that requires Enterprise features in Analysis and Integration Services, so an edition upgrade is required on virtual node 2. I have done some research and found several edition upgrade examples, but none that match the above scenario. We are running production on these machines, so I can't risk experimenting with command line options, I have to be right the first time.

Is it possible to mix two editions of SQL Server 2005 in one cluster? Can I upgrade virtual node 2 to Enterprise but leave virtual node 1 at Standard? What procedure do I have to follow to upgrade all three components of virtual node 2 to Enterprise Edition on both physical node B and C?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Full-Text Search Problem When I Upgrade From SQL 2005 Express To Express Advanced Services

Mar 1, 2007

Hi. I'm trying to get full-text search working on my SQL 2005 Express with Advanced Services and am having problems. I thought that I installed it correctly, and when I look in the services running, I see it SQL Server Fulltext Search(MSSQLSERVER). Also note that I have SQL Server 2005 Standard installed on this same laptop. I don't know if that Full text Search applies to the Standard, Express or both.

What I do see is that if I connect to the database engine named <mylaptop>, I can see the version is 9.0.1399 and I can see the check box to enable full-text indexing in a particular databases properties. When I run SELECT FULLTEXTSERVICEPROPERTY('IsFullTextInstalled'), I get a 1.

However, when I connect to the engine name <mylaptop>SQLExpress, I se the version is 9.0.3042, and I don't see the same check-box to enable full-text indexing. When I run SELECT FULLTEXTSERVICEPROPERTY('IsFullTextInstalled'), I get a 0.

I've never tried this before so I know I'm probably missing something basic. But, I have searched quite a bit and not found my answer. So, I'm looking to you for help.

Thanks in advance.

John.
