External Metadata Column Error
Oct 25, 2007
I keep getting the following error in SSIS. Also, I don't get the error on every server the package is run on, but less than 5 (the package is run on over 100).
"The external metadata column collection is out of synchronization with the data source columns. The column "Timestamp" needs to be added to the external metadata column collection"
Please tell me where I need to remove Timestamp from. Thanks

Hello,
I have a SSIS package with a Data Flow task. This task transfers the data from SQL Server 2000 to a table in SQL Server 2005.
I deployed and tested this package on the Test Server. Then put this package in a job and executed it - Works fine.
On the production server- If I execute the package through DTEXECUI, it works fine. But when I try executing it through a job- the job fails and it gives me following error:
Description: The external metadata column collection is out of synchronization with the data source columns. The "external metadata column "T_FieldName" (82)" needs to be removed from the external metadata column collection....
What I don't understand is, why are there no errors displayed when I execute the package through DTEXECUI.
Can anyone help me to resolve this issue.
Thanks.

Hi,
I have an Excel file source. I keep getting this error when running the package:
"The external metadata column collection is out of synchronization with the data source columns. The column "x" needs to be updated in the external metadata column collection."
When I get this error with regular flat files, it's because I've changed the data type of a given column in the flat file connection manager. And I resolve it simply by double-clicking on the flat file source task, and viola - it corrects it for me.
How do I correct this with an Excel file? Help.
Thanks

Hi,
is there a way to start validation of external metadata manual?
My problem is this:
The package uses a variable as connectionstring for flatfile source, and another variable for the destination table. Running the package gives a warning about external metadata that needs to be updated. Normally I update this data by just opening the data flow, and answering the question for updating with yes. This time that deosnt work, I think because the variable is not set, so there can not be any conflicts with external metadata.
I dont want do disable validation, but just validate one time and then save the package.
Any ideas?

Jan

Hello,
I am using the lookup transformation. I made a change on reference view, but I can't seem to get the transformation to recognize the fact that the underlying table has changed.
Is this possible? Surely you don't have to redo the entire lookup task in order to caputre a new column that is added onto a table / view.

We have a Main package and which is calling 2 more other packages.
The first package contains a connection and we are using a Dataflow task. The data flow task has OleDB Data source which is taking getting columns using a Stored Procedure. And the output we need to write in a Flat File.
The second Package also contains the same(The same Tasks, Database and Stored Procedure Calling)
The difference is in the stored procedure Parameters. Based on the different parameters Stored procedures returns the different Columns and Rows output.
When we are trying to Get the second package output in OleDb Data source it shows all the columns which is the output of the First Package because it stores External Meta Data.
So My understanding is the Connection to the same database keeps the External metadata information with the connection and because of that it is always getting the same output columns in Ole DB Data source task in the second Package also.
How to Get my correct output from the second package in this case?
Or If we dont want to store external Meta data with the Connection then is that possible? If yes then How?
Thanks in advance.

I have an XML file that my XML Source component is accessing. I have noticed that is possible to set a column in the external metadata collection to a certain datatype and the matching output column to a different datatype and this doesn't not generate a warning like it does with other source components (e.g. Flat File Source Adapter).
Try it. Set a column in your external metadata to have a datatype of DT_WSTR. Set the matching output column to DT_UI8. You will NOT get a validation error. I think you should.
This behaviour was noticed on RTM (i.e. no service pack installed) by the way.
I think this is a bug. Anyone agree?

Hello,
I'm working on a custom dataflow destination component. It makes use of the External Metadata Collection. I also use Custom Properties with the external metadata collection.
When I open the destination component using the Advanced Editor, and select an External Metadata Collection and change the Custom Property it always changes back to the original value.
Additionally the method SetExternalMetadataColumnProperty never gets called.
Here is a little Test Component that surfaces the problem:
[DtsPipelineComponent(ComponentType=ComponentType.DestinationAdapter, DisplayName="Test Destination")]
public class Class1 : PipelineComponent
{
public override void ProvideComponentProperties()
{
base.ProvideComponentProperties();
ComponentMetaData.InputCollection.RemoveAll();
IDTSInput90 input = ComponentMetaData.InputCollection.New();
input.Name = "Name";
input.ExternalMetadataColumnCollection.IsUsed = true;
IDTSExternalMetadataColumn90 ext = input.ExternalMetadataColumnCollection.New();
ext.Name = "ExtName";
IDTSCustomProperty90 customProp = ext.CustomPropertyCollection.New();
customProp.Name = "Custom Property";
customProp.Value = "Hallo";
}
public override IDTSCustomProperty90 SetExternalMetadataColumnProperty(int iID, int iExternalMetadataColumnID, string strPropertyName, object oValue)
{
return base.SetExternalMetadataColumnProperty(iID, iExternalMetadataColumnID, strPropertyName, oValue);
}
}
Any ideas how to make that work?

SQL table and column metadata
Is there a way to add or update the column or table (using the extended properties) description metadata via T-SQL (from within a stored procedure) or via a program (such as VB.NET using ADO)?
These metadata properties are available via the SSMS interface:
Columns via the Column Properties/Table Designer/Description
Tables via the Table Properties/Extended Properties/[Extended Property Name]
Thanks in advance,

Hi all!
My problem I've been struggling with is the following. I have a set of text files (around 70), each with different column numbers and types. I define Flat File Connection Managers for each of them where I can nicely rename, set data types and omit certain columns. I do this once and this will be the basis for the rest of the data process (would be nice programmatically too actually).
I would like to pump each of these text files into SQL Server tables using CREATE TABLE and BULK INSERT (because do it one-by-one is really a pain). The question is:
is there a way to obtain column information (Script Task) from a Connection Manager so I can run CREATE TABLE-s? I just need the names, data type for each nothing fancy...
(I bumped into interfaces like IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFileColumns90, which I cannot handle from the Script Task.)
Any help appreciated!

Hi!
I have created a view and one of the columns in the view has an alias assigned to it.
I'm able to read the metadata from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.VIEW_COLUMN_USAGE and also lookup
from which table each column in the view orginated from except for the column that has an alias assigned to it.
Is there any other way to lookup a column that has an alias assigned to it?
Thanks alot!

Have many views based on legacy tables that have different table and column names. Want to create a table that shows view table / column and underlying table column, e.g.
CREATE VIEW [dbo].[Branch]
AS
SELECT
divbra_id BranchID,
cmpny_id CompanyID,
divbra_cde BranchCode,
divbra_nme BranchName
FROM MyDatabase.dbo.divbranc
GO
is an existing view. I want to pull out the following metadata:
divbranc divbra_id Branch BranchID
divbranc cmpny_id Branch CompanyID
divbranc divbra_cde Branch BranchCode
divbranc divbra_nme Branch BranchName
Is there anyway to get this from SQL metadata without actually parsing the view SELECT statement in code?

I'm having some issues getting OLE DB Data Sources to work w stored procs in SSIS. Here's the situation.
I have an OLE DB Data Source set up to call a stored proc w no parameters. The stored procedure loops through a set of databases and inserts data from each database into a results table. I'm attempting to return the results table to SSIS, but the Available External Columns are not populating. However, previewing the query in SSIS does show results. The insert in to the results table is done by a call to sp_executesql.
I've tried setting the results table up as a temp table, table variable, and static table. I have NOCOUNT set ON and am only returning one recordset. I've seen the other threads in here about similar problems, but none of their solutions seem to work for me.
Any help would be much appreciated....

IÂ setup merge replication about 3 weeks ago between a few databases all running SQL 2008 SP1:
DB1 - This database is the publisher and distributor. DB2 - This database is a write-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 1) to DB1.
DB3 - This database is a write-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 1) to DB1.
DB4 - This database is a write-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 1) to DB1.
DB5 - This database is a read-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 2) to DB1.
DB6 - This database is a read-only subscriber (-EXCHANGETYPE 2) to DB1.
Everything was running fine, then suddenly one at a time the replication jobs for DB2, DB3, and DB4 all started reporting the error:
The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Publisher for changes not yet sent to the Subscriber. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload). (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199402)
I was able to manually upload data from DB2, DB3, and DB4 to DB1 then reinitialize the subscriptions. However, I don't understand why only those three subscriptions failed. I have other merge replication jobs between the same SQL instances that are still running fine. The only unique thing I can determine about the failed subscriptions is that they are write-only. I really don't want to make them read/write, as it would cause a lot of unnecessary network traffic to flow between them.
Based on what I've been able to gather, the subscriptions were marked as expired which caused this problem. If I change subscriptions to never expire to get around this problem, is that going to cause my distribution DB to grow unchecked? Are there other ways to solve this problem?

I have a Source Query with this sql set as a property expression:
"SELECT Category, Server_Name, Entitle_UserID,User_SubID,Start_Time,End_Time,Entitle_User_Name,Stat_Name,Stat_Count,Stat_Type,pk,create_date,run_num,Average,Median,Maximim FROM tbl_ws_stats WHERE pk > " + (DT_STR, 100, 1252)@[pk_var]
There is a message : 'The component has inconsistent metadata.'
Then when I click on the Source Query: 'The component is not in a valid state. Do you want the component to fix itself automatically?'
I also notice that there are no columns on the Column Mappings tab and no way to add columns.
How can I correct?
Thanks

In SSIS 2008R2, I have a dataflow with an xlsx source and the destination is a SQL Server 2008R2 table. The files are delivered from a location where staff members 'work with' the source files. The files are produced monthly.
The dataflow that contains the file breaks upon the attempt to process subsequent monthly xlsx files with a message similar to the following:
--*************
[TNUQQ [16]] Warning: The external columns for component "TNUQQ" (16) are out of synchronization with the data source columns. The column "F12" needs to be added to the external columns.
The external column "county_taxable_sale_amount" needs to be updated.
The external column "city_taxable_sale_amount" needs to be updated.
The external column "district_taxable_sale_amount" needs to be updated.
The external column "QTY" (62) needs to be removed from the external columns.
--*************
I've noticed that some columns in the file ship with no data. A column with no data can be typed as datetime one month, and then float another month. I've tried to load xlsx to raw to table, but that does not work around this issue.
I've tried to set 'ValidateExternalMetadata' to 'False' on the  Excel source, but that does not work either. Aside from going back to the folks who ship the file to us, is there anything that can be done in SSIS to work around this issue, and still wind up with valid data?

This has been driving me mad for several days. I have setup SQL Server 2005 Express (SP2) on a box. I have SQL Server Management Studio (9.00.3042.00) installed on a client box. I can connect to the 2005 server and created a test database on the machine. But when I try to open a query on the database, I always get the above error message "[Error loading mining model metadata: Not connected.]" in the LHS pane and the query window remains unconnected. If I try to connect (by clicking on the connect button) I get a login screen for Analysis Services, but I don't have Analysis Services running on any boxes. The login screen doesn't allow me to change anything other than Server Name. This happens even if I open a new Database Engine Query through the File/New menu.
All I want to do to execute a query against my database. I don't want to use Analysis Services. What am I doing wrong? I have almost the exact same setup at home and it works fine.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I'm having an issue running the clustering algorithm in the data mining view of Visual Studio. The databases connect properly and the data subsequently loads. However, upon clicking on the "Mining Model Viewer" tab, I receive the following error message:
Errors in the metadata manager. The D Msample ~MC cube has no measure groups. Errors in the metadata manager. An error occurred when loading the D Msample ~MC cube, from the file, '\?C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2OLAPDataewDM_sample.0.dbD Msample ~MC.2.cub.xml'.
We are not using a data cube, so I am assuming that this file is being called through the clustering algorithm. Furthermore, I have run the same process on different systems successfully. The only difference I can detect is that this error resulted on a 64bit system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
Im connecting to an AS400 to retrive data with SQL Server 2005. Until now i have not pulled large amounts of data from there. My queries run fine on my local machine in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. I have run queries for up to an hour or more. The minute i put them in a SP and execute them they time out at 90 sec.
I have a linked server set up to the 400 with the connetion timeout set at 600 and the Query timeout at 600 through port 8471. Is there a port timeout on the server I need to change?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi All,
Hopefully someone can help me with what I'm sure is a very simple question (new to the XML thing). I receive an XML file from "someplace" that I need to parse out using the XML Source in SSIS. I have SSIS generate me an XSD document, as one isn't provided for me. However, after I do this, SSIS does not show any available external columns to pull data from- the "Columns" section of the source is just blank. I'm pretty sure this has to do with a syntax error in either the XML file that is being provided to me, or the XSD doc that SSIS is generating. Below are both (obviously with data dummied up). Can someone take a look and let me what needs to be changed in either file to get this up and running? I'm looking to grab the AccountNumber, RecordNumber, ProcessedDate, Status, and StatusMessage elements.

I work with February CTP of SqlServer 2008.
I have an Assembly with several UDTs inside. Version of assembly is 1.0.*
I use CREATE ASSEMBLY statement to register this assembly, and it runs without any errors. Then I rebuild CLR solution without doing any changes in source code. In that case the only difference between new and old assemblies is version (difference in fourth part of version).
Then I try to update assembly in SqlServer. I use
ALTER ASSEMBLY <name>
FROM <path>
WITH PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE, UNCHECKED DATA
statement for this. Statement runs with error:
Msg 6509An error occurred while gathering metadata from assembly €˜<Assembly name>€™ with HRESULT 0x1.
I found the list of condition for ALTER ASSEMBLY in MSDN:
ALTER ASSEMBLY statement cannot be used to change the following:
· The signatures of CLR functions, aggregate functions, stored procedures, and triggers in an instance of SQL Server that reference the assembly. ALTER ASSEMBLY fails when SQL Server cannot rebind .NET Framework database objects in SQL Server with the new version of the assembly.
· The signatures of methods in the assembly that are called from other assemblies.
· The list of assemblies that depend on the assembly, as referenced in the DependentList property of the assembly.
· The indexability of a method, unless there are no indexes or persisted computed columns depending on that method, either directly or indirectly.
· The FillRow method name attribute for CLR table-valued functions.
· The Accumulate and Terminate method signature for user-defined aggregates.
· System assemblies.
· Assembly ownership. Use ALTER AUTHORIZATION (Transact-SQL) instead.
Additionally, for assemblies that implement user-defined types, ALTER ASSEMBLY can be used for making only the following changes:
· Modifying public methods of the user-defined type class, as long as signatures or attributes are not changed.
· Adding new public methods.
· Modifying private methods in any way.
But I haven€™t done any changes in source code, so new version of assembly satisfies all this conditions.
What could be the reason for such behavior?
P.S. I€™ve got the same error, if I add or change any method in assembly before rebuilding.

A trace on the db, reveals that the user process is attempting to log in to the server as 'Admin'. However, when the query with the linked table is first opened, the user is prompted for username/password (non Windows authentication).
Any ideas? I googled and found some stuff, but nothing directly related and most of what I found was supposedly fixed with SP1.

I had created a CLR function in my db and was able to execute it successfully a couple of months ago. But when I tried to execute it today it was throwing errors saying there was something wrong with the permissions on the assembly. So I decided to drop everything and recreate it except I can not longer create the assembly with EXTERNAL ACCESS permissions. Whenever I try to create the assembly I get the followng error:
Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.
Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.
I also tried to create the assembly with Unsafe permissions and got the same error. Does anyone know why this error would be occurring now? I tried creating the same assembly on a different SQL 2005 server and it creates successfully and can be executed successfully. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
