Extract Column Data From Flat File Error Output

Dec 10, 2007

Hi Friend,

I am stuck with a problem and need your help. As we know, all columns that go to error flow of flat file source connection are displayed as a single column e.g. FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn, but my requirement is to extract the first column value from this FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn, my data is dilimeted by "|" pipe operator. I have created a script component to deal with this. However if we take FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn column as input column in script component, it comes as BLOB data. I wrote below code in transformation script component to extract BLOB data from column in string form and then do a Left function search to take first column out.

When I am running this script component I am getting '??????????' question marks as a result in Row.Pname.

Can anyone please help me understand if I am doing anything wrong in this script or suggest a better way to take the data out?

I appreciate your help.

Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)

'

'

Dim Error_Data As String

Dim Column_1 As String

Dim Len As Integer

Dim Buffer As Byte()

Buffer = Row.FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn.GetBlobData(0, CInt(Row.FlatFileSourceErrorOutputColumn.Length))

Error_Data = System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetString(Buffer)

Len = Error_Data.IndexOf("|")

Column_1 = Left(Error_Data, Len - 1)

Row.Pname = Column_1

End Sub

Thanks,
Kul

Output Column Width Not Refected In The Flat File That Is Created Using A Flat File Destination?

May 11, 2006

I am transferring data from an OLEDB source to a Flat File Destination and I want the column width for all of the output columns to 30 (max width amongst the columns selected), but that is not refected in the Fixed Width Flat File that got created. The outputcolumnwidth seems to be the same as the inputcolumnwidth. Is there any other setting that I am possibly missing or is this a possible defect?

Any inputs will be appreciated.

Flat File Connection Manager Throws Error When A Column Gets Added To The Flat File

Dec 27, 2006

Hi,

I have a situation where a tab limited text file is used to populate a sql server table.

The tab limited text file comes from a third party vendor. There are fixed number of columns we need to export to the sql server table. However the third party may add colums in the text file. Whenenver the text file has an added column (which we dont need to import) the build fails since the flat file connection manager does not create the metadata for it again. The problem goes away  where I press the button "Reset Columns" since it builds the metadata then. Since we need to build the tables everyday we cannot automate it using SSIS because the metadata does not change automatically. Is there a way out in SSIS?

Flat File Source Error Output Conversion Error With UNICODE Files

May 14, 2008

i have a weird situation here, i tried to load a unicode file with a flat file source component, one of file lines has data like any other line but also contains the character "ÿ" which i can't see or find it and replace it with empty string, the source component parses the line correctly but if there is a data type error in this line, the error output for that line gives me this character "ÿ" instead of the original line.

simply, the error output of flat file source component fail to get the original line when the line contains hidden "ÿ".

i hope you can help me with issue.

Thanks in advance.

Flat File Processing - Cannot Get Error Output To Write

Apr 20, 2007

I cannot seem to get my flat file to write columns in error when inserting into a SQL table. I have tried a few examples from MS and did not get anything written to my flat file output. I have set the Source Error Output on this flat file and it uses a script task to created the error description and then write it to a Flat File Destination.

I am new to SSIS and have not had any formal training on it. However, I am very familiar with VS.Net/c# and SQL 2000 DTS - I need to get this working ASAP as there are 45 total flat files that need to be processed. Once I have this solved for one, the rest will follow suit.

If more details would help, I can provide them.

Kind Regards,

Ron

Extract And Load In Flat File

Nov 6, 2007

Hi,

I have a dataflow task which has 3 oledb source objects connected to each data conversion object and these are connected to a union all and finally to a flat file destination.

The purpose of this one is to extract data and pump them to the flat file.

If i run this in production during the time users are doing transactional processes (typical, add, edit delete), will it have an impact?

Flat File Source Column Parsing Error

May 12, 2006

Hello All,

I have come across this issue with the Flat File Source when the delimiter is set to a comma.

"""KAILUA KONA,HI""","CA",

In the data snippet above and with the setting of using a comma as a column delimiter

and a " as the text qualifer.

the data will be parsed in this fashion:

"""KAILUA as a column:

HI""" as a column

CA as column

when it should be

"KAILUA,HI" as a column

CA as column.

Is there a way to let the Flat File Source to let it know not to parse the data in multiple quotes ?

Thank you

Normalizing Flat Data / Extract One Of Each Type

Nov 6, 2007

I'm new to SSIS and have run into a problem I'm hoping someone can help me with.

Basically, I have a flat file that looks something like:

ID,Type,Description,Results
1,Test1,This is a test,5
2,Test1,This is also a 1 test,7
3,Test1,This is also a 1 test,13
4,Test2,This is a second test,14
5,Test2,This is also a second test,18

I'm trying to normalize the data by extracting out individual rows that have the same "Type" column value. So what I want is to extract each unique type and description into a separate table. This would give me two new rows, one for a type of Test1, and one for a type of Test2, with the descriptions. Does this make sense? Then I could relate the individual results to these test types. In my scenario, I don't care which description is used; I just want to take the first description that shows up with the associated "Type."

Does anyone have any idea of how I could go about doing this? I could pull out all unique "Types" from the rows with the Aggregate transformation, but I'm trying to figure out how to get the description that goes along with it.

Thanks,

Brian

How To Append Data To A Destination Flat File Without Appending The Column Names Again

Mar 13, 2008

Hello guys,

here is my issue.

I created a ssis package which exports the data from oledb source to flat file (csv format). For this i have OLEDB source and Flat File as destination. I generate the file and filename dynamically with the column names in the first row. So if the dynamically generated file name already exists , then i want to append the data in the same existing file. But I dont want to append the column names again. I just want to append the rows to the existing rows.

so lets say first time i generate a file called File1_3132008.csv.

Col1, Col2
1,2
3,4

After some days if my ssis package generates the same file name i.e. File1_3132008.csv, this time i just want to append the rows to the existing file. So the file should look like this-
Col1, Col21,23,45,67,8

But instead my file looks like this if i set Overwrite propery to false

Col1,Col2
1,2
3,4
Col1,Col2
5,6
7,8

Can anyone help me to get the file as shown in the highlighed

Any help would be appreciated .

Thanks

SSIS Randomly Empties Out Column Data While Using Flat File Source

Jan 12, 2007

I'm having a problem using the Flat File Source while using the underlying .Net classes to execute SSIS Packages. The issue is that for some reason when I load a flat file it Empty's out columns randomly. Its happening in the Flat File Source Task. By random I mean that most of the times all the data gets loaded but sometimes it doesnt and it empty's out column data. Interestingly enough this is random and even the emptying out of columns isnt a complete empty, its more like a 90% emtpying. Now you'll ask that is the file different everytime and the answer is NO. Its the same file everytime. If I run the same file everytime for 10 times it would empty out various columns maybe 1 of those times. This doesnt seem to be a problem while working with dtexec or the Package Executor utility. Need Help!!

Need To Capture Actual Data In Row On Error To Flat File

Sep 18, 2007

Let me preface by saying I am not very familiar with SSIS.

Ideally, since the Transfer SQL Server Objects task can do all tables, I would like to use it to copy only data from one server to a new server that has the tables pre-created. When I encounter any kind of error, in addition to the error information provided by SSIS, I also need the actual row data.

If using the Transfer Object task can't do that, how would I loop through all the tables on an OLEDB source and capture the same error information on the destination? I figured out how to do the Data Flow a table with a redirect error output but that does not give me the actual row data.

Potential Loss Of Data Error On Flat File Source

It errors on the flat file source, so I haven't been able to use a data viewer to see what's going on.

Rougue CR/LF In My Bcp Output Flat File!?!?!

My trouble is that every 2034 characters the output contains a :0D:0A (CR/Linefeed).

Other than that all the output data looks peachy.

Is there some line size setting I am missing (would it be packetsize?)?

Ideally I would just like to not have any CR/LF in my file at all...is there some way to turn it off? I see there are flags to set to change the column and row terminators, but how to turn them OFF???

Thanks much!

Date Output To Flat File

Jul 18, 2007

I am using a simple input from an SQL data base where I have 4 dates defined as type D. I am writing to a flat file with the fileds defined with any available date format and the output on the flat file comes out as "mm/dd/yy 00:00". I'd like to just have the date portion with no time. The input does not have a time on it so I understand the 00:00 as the value. It seems that I shouldn't have to do any extra work as it is date to date. I've seen the gyrations for a date from the SQL database when it is a character field, but that's not the issue here.

Thanks!

Stored Procedure Output To Flat File

Sep 17, 2007

Hi,

I tried to find some information about this, but surprisingly can't seem to find anything. Seems like it would be a very common scenario.

I need to send the output of a stored procedure to a flat file. First, I created an Execute SQL Task that calls the stored procedure. I selected "full result set."

My first question is, how do I capture the individual column values? For example, under "Result Set", should I create an Object variable, or should I use individual column variables? I've tried both ways, but can't seem to get to the next item, below...

Now, how do I map the variables to the flat file? If I use a data flow task, the flat file has "no available inputs". If I add an OLE DB Source before the flat file destination, there's no place to capture the result set.

Clearly, I am missing something here.

Thanks

Flat File -&&> Table: Error Using I/E Wiz, Date..could Not Be Converted..potential Loss Of Data

Jul 16, 2007

The following error is encountered when importing a delimited flat file with date of fomat "dd.mm.yyyy"

Error: 0xC02020A1 at Data Flow Task, Source - DCDtest_xpt [1]: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "value date" returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".

This was when I manually built the package.

I get the same error when using the Import/Export wizard

I am even using the "suggest types" button and have tried sampling the default number of rows (?200) and also 2000.

The type it suggests is DT_DATE.

But reading the BOL, this would appear to be the wrong type:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms141036.aspx (obviously the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing)

seems to indicate that

DT_DBTIMESTAMP

is the correct value

(I cannot believe that they have different datatypes in SSIS than in SQL. I can't believe for a minute this is for all the hundreds of thousands of Oracle users who obviously switched to SSIS when they saw what a high quality product it is.)

I tried other DT_... values but no dice.

Can anyone help?

I always thought that Classic ASP was the worst product I've ever worked with from the Microsoft stable, but I was wrong.

I am fed up of having to post on this board (no wonder it is so 'popular')

Talking to peers, reading books, googling nearly always enables me to figure out a problem with any application I have ever used, but SSIS breaks the mould in sheer crapness and the weirdnes and unfathomability of its cryptic errors,.

Rant over (for today)

Records From Internal Table Not Output In Order To Flat File

Oct 13, 2006

Hi -

I have a SSIS package that dumps data from an internal table to a flat file output using standard data flow tasks. The entire table is output - no special SQL. Most of the time the records are placed in the output file in the same order as the internal DB table, but occasionally the order appears to be more random. When that happens, the record order in the internal table is correct - it is just the output.

I can find no properties that seem to affect this. I would appreciate any hints and advice that anyone can give me. Has anyone else encountered this same problem?

SSIS - Output Table To Flat Fixed-width File

Oct 19, 2007

I am new to SSIS and am having trouble with automatically setting up the destination output columns.

I am sure there must be an easy way to do this.

My table (source) has 86 columns in it of varying lenghts.

In my connection magagers, I have created one for the SQL Server (source data) and one for the flat file (destination output).

I have also created an OLE DB source data object and a destination Flat File object and set them up to the respective connection managers.

Finally I have linked the source to the destination.

Now when I look at the source, it shows me all 86 columns.

When I open up destination, there are no columns set up.

Problem: do I have to type in all the columns manually in the connection manager for the Flat File?

I would think there would be some automatic way that it would self-populate the columns over to the flat file destination.
