Extracting Table Metadata Like Schema / Catalog Name From Memory / Files?

I wanted to know that when I create a table using SQL Server, does the table metadata like schemaname and catalogname is stored in memory or in hard-disc. I am trying to extract schemaname and catalogname when the database is down or correctly when I have no connection string. I know about sysindexes, systables etc, but i am not able to understand whether it stores the data which is useful to me like catalogname.

I am current having an issue with using a catalog in my linked server on SQL Server 2005.
I create my Linked server as follows:
exec sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'LINKED_SERVER',
@srvproduct = N'',
@provider = N'SQLNCLI',
@datasrc = N'MYSERVER',
@catalog = N'MYDATABASE'
(and I add the user security accordingly)
If I then run the query:
Select * from LINKED_SERVER.MYDATABASE.DBO.MYTABLE
and it returns my results fine , however the reason I included a catalog was so the linked server would default to MYDATABASE , so technically (according to the documentation) I should be able to run the query
Select * from LINKED_SERVER..DBO.MYTABLE
and exclude my database name, however I keep getting the error
Msg 7313, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
An invalid schema or catalog was specified for the provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LINKED_SERVER'".
Could someone please help explain to me why this does not work?

I keep recieving a "Invalid use of schema or catalog for OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server D"CUSTOMERLINK". A four-part name was supplied, but the provider does not expose the necessary interfaces to use a catalog or schema."
I'm attempting to set up a linked server from SQL 2005 to Oracle 10.2. I run the following sp_addlinkedserver and sp_addlinkedsrvlogin procedures:
sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'CUSTOMERLINK',
@provider = 'MSDAORA',
@srvproduct = 'ORACLE',
@datasrc = 'CUSTOMER'
GO
sp_addlinkedsrvlogin
@rmtsrvname = 'CUSTOMERLINK',

These procedures complete successfully. I then run a sp_tables_ex procedure:
sp_tables_ex @table_server=CUSTOMERLINK, @table_schema='CUSTOMER1'
This procedure completes successfully and gives me all of the table names in my oracle database that relate to the Customer1 schema.
Then when I go to run a query
select id from [CUSTOMERLINK].[CUSTOMERDB].[CUSTOMER1].[CLIENT] Where name = 'codm'

Any suggestions?

We have an OLTP database and operational reporting is carried out on a replica server / database. We have plans to build a new data warehouse and an analysis services cube.
Question 1:Should a cube be designed to extract data from a physical star schema rather than a logical one (3NF relational (ODS?) using a data source view to derive the star)? I'm guessing for performance it's better to pull data from similar structures (physical facts and dimensions as required by analysis services) but is the difference significant?
Question 2:Depending on the answer to q1, is it bad practice to ETL data from a staging database (replica > staging) directly to a star schema (multiple data sources and cleansing / business rules required)? Or should it be processed from staging to an ods and only then to a star schema (physical or logical). I still don't know if an ODS is required but I guess the consideration for this decision is whether the business would require daily operational (or ad hoc) reporting on the consolidated data sources (without needing historical DW functionality).

I had a pervious thread on a metadata KB but didn't get a response. So I was wondering if anyone has added on a web based help file app to SSRS? Something that you could assign additional metadata to each report. Something that would be searchable.
At this point SSRS doesn't provide enough fields for metadata. I am looking to assign some thing like:
1. Owner/Requestor of report
2. Fields in report
3. Description (other than the one provided)
4. etc..
Does anyone have any ideas of a add on, utility, or software?

Hello,
I have an input into a raw file destination that has IsSorted=TRUE.
Any output from a raw file source that uses that raw file will have IsSorted=FALSE.
So, a question for Microsoft. Is it a legitimate request to ask that the IsSorted and SortKey metadata be stored in a raw file? If so I shall raise it at Connect.

We have several hundred very simple ETL SSIS 2K8 package files (*.dtsx).
I'd like to be able to interrogate them to determine source and destination fields.
There's no great need to map source to dest or to extract data types.
So far, the most promising candidate is to load them using OPENROWSET into an XML field in a SS table.No problem there, but querying using OPENXML has me stumped.
The package files will change a couple of times per year, so the process needs to be repeatable with minimal manual intervention.

I have a scenario, need to create SQL server Tables dynamically.
I Have multiple xml data file on a particular location, and want to load those XML data into sql server tables, but he metadata of each xml data files are not same.
Hence the approach is that,
1. Pick first file from that location
2. Create a table according to that xml data file metada
3. load data on newly created table.
4. Pickup the next xml data files.
5. loop through, till the XML data files are exists on that location.

"SSIS 2012 Catalog doesn't have option to give read access to SSIS Catalog to view package run reports" ... Any luck allowing power developers / operators access to READ the SQL 2012 SSIS Execution Reports without granting them SSIS_Admin or Sysadmin?
According to this link posted back in 2011 (w/ Microsoft's feedback in Nov 2011: "We’re closing this issue as “Won’t Fix.” At this point the bug does not meet our bar for resolving prior to SQL Server 2012 RTM. As we approach the SQL Server 2012 release the bar for making code changes gets progressively higher." URL....Regarding Permissions to SSIS Catalog, here are the findings. We can give access in three ways:
1. READ Access – We can provide a user db_datareader access. With this the user can see the objects within the SSIS catalog database, but cannot see the reports.
2. SSIS_ADMIN – Add the user to this database role in SSISDB. With this the user can view the reports. But it also provides them privileges to modify catalog information which is not expected. We can add it using below script EXEC sp_addrolemember 'ssis_admin' , 'REDMONDPAIntelAnalyst'
3. SYSADMIN - Add the user to this server role. This will make the user an admin on the SQL server. This is not intended. Is there any method available which will have provision to give read only access to see SSIS Catalog package execution reports and not having modify Catalog access.

I am looking to test this feature - and the "Transaction Performance Collector" has recommended me a table to port to In-Memory OLTP.
I have now tried the "Table Memory Optimization Advisor" tool.
After a couple of tweaks to the table design - the tool is now passing validation but the tool is not allowing to progress to the next step:
Could it be down to not having enough memory? But would this not show in the advisor?

I am stuck on finding a solution to transpose source data from a system via a metadata look-up table into a destination table. I need a method to transpose/pivot the source data into columns (which are by various data-types). The datatypes for each column are listed in a metadata table.

I'm trying to extract the organisation Name from the organisations table but am unsure of the sql statement to do this.

Is there a way to add or update the column or table (using the extended properties) description metadata via T-SQL (from within a stored procedure) or via a program (such as VB.NET using ADO)?
These metadata properties are available via the SSMS interface:
Columns via the Column Properties/Table Designer/Description
Tables via the Table Properties/Extended Properties/[Extended Property Name]

Hello.
I'm working with SQL Server 2005 Standard edition.
I have a Java program that loads PDF files into the database. I have a table called T08_entity which, among others, has two IMAGE columns. The first Image column is for the original PDF file. The second one is for the PDF file with modified permissions (printing, saving, etc). This is made using the i-text library.
The programs looks for the content of a disk folder, reads the contents of the folder, and inserts, one by one, the pdf files (besides other fields, like the name of the file, and ID, etc... but these are varchar or int fields. No problem with these.
When the folder has only small files (smaller that 7-8 mb), it loads them without any problem into the database. But when the folder has bigger files (>10mb, more or less...) I get an OUT OF MEMORY error.
I'm using the latest sqljdbc.jar driver (v1.2.2727). My server computer has only 1GB of RAM... but I've read that this latest driver can load big amounts of binary data using the connection property "responseBuffering=adaptive".
Here is a sample of my code (at least the most relevant lines):

Well, as I said, when I run the program, when it reads smaller files, there's no problem. But when it gets a big file, I get the OUT OF MEMORY error. I have another application that reads pdf files ONE AT A TIME, using a code very much like this one, and it reads big files (>30mb) with no problems. The problems is with this one.

Hi,
I have two tables - a stock table and a transaction table. The stock table is called stock and the transaction table is called trans. The table make a point of sale database. Both table have a joining field called prod_no.
I want to extract the stock line by querying stock.prod_no that are not present in the trans table for a period of time specified.
Basically, I want to find dead stock lines that have not been sold and, therefore, are not in the transaction table but that have a stock figure. I have to enter in a start and end date paramater using the ddate field in the trans table. I have looked at left, right and outer joins but with no luck and don't even know if this is the correct query type to use.

I need some help with the following...
My data source has some columns I have to 'translate' first and then insert into my destination table.
Example Source data:

1 'Small' 'Tall'
2 'Big' 'Short'
has to become

I thought of creating a lookup table (I'm talking about the real table, not a lookup transformation table) that would have these columns: column name, value_source, value_dest
Example:
col_name vl_source vl_dest
size 'Small' 'Y'
size 'Big' 'N'
height 'Tall' 'P'
... and so on, I believe you get the point
How would you extract the needed values? Can I use a select statement in a derived column expression? Any ideas? I'm not really fond of the idea to create n lookups, one for each column I have to translate, is there a slicker solution?

Hello. I have a somwhat simple question.
I have a table inside my database where i have some columns. Id like to extract distinct values from one column and inser them into another. My table is named article and id like to slect all the destinct values from the column naned type inside my article table. Then i need to insert my values into a new table called type but i would also like the to have 2 columns inside my type table. 1 called counter witch is an auto increment PK, and another one named type where the results from my query would be inserted.
Iv tried a veriety of querys but none of them have managed to do this.
Could anyone help me construct this query?

Hello,
I have been placed in the position of administering our SQL server 6.5 (Microsoft). Being new to SQL and having some knowledge of databases (used to use Foxpro 2.6 for...DOS!) I am faced with an ever increasing table of incoming call information from our Ascend MAX RAS equipment. This table increases by 900,000 records a month. The previous administrator (no longer available) was using a Visual Foxpro 5 application to archive and remove the data older than 60 days. Unfortunately he left and took with him Visual Fox and all of his project files.
My question is this: Is there an easy way to archive then remove the data older than 60 days from the table? I would like to archive it to a tape drive. We need to maintain this archive for the purposes of searching back through customer calls for IP addresses on certain dates and times. We are an ISP, and occasionally need to give this information to law enforcement agencies. So we cannot just delete it.

Hello,I am currently working on a monthly load process with a datamart. Ioriginally designed the tables in a normalized fashion with the ideathat I would denormalize as needed once I got an idea of what theperformance was like. There were some performance problems, so thedecision was made to denormalize. Now the users are happy with thequery performance, but loading the tables is much more difficult.Specifically...There were two main tables, a header table and a line item table. Thenumber of headers that were in the target but not the header file thismonth was about 42K out of 1M.So.... any other ideas on how I can set up a query to get the distinctheaders from the denormalized table? Right now I'm considering usingworktables if I can't figure anything else out, but I don't know ifthat will really help me much either.I'm not looking for a definitive answer here, just some ideas that Ican try.Thanks,-Tom.

hi all,
I need to select the no of records on the basis of specified range of records.
In oracle i found rownum, i could not find it in sqlserver. how the data are extracted from the huge records..
I have used temporary table,map the table primary key to the next table with identity
but i dont find it good. I need to ignore the insert the data in next table or craeting new table having the rowid ...
Is there some other best way to extract the specified data
here is the type of query.
select * from customers where rownum between 1000 and 10000
this is in oracle
i am in need to do this in the sql server

Hi all.
This is my first SSIS project it's also an utter mare.
I'm a C# developer with reasonable SQL knowledge but I haven't used SSIS projects in BIS before.
What we have (for some insane reason) is an SQL table like so:
Column A |Column B |Column X |
Where Column X contains XML like this:
<Column C></Column C><Column D></Column D><Column ArrgWTF></Column ArrgWTF>
Where <Column ArrgWTF> contains two '-' delimited values.
What I need is some guidence (or just being told if its possible or not) to take this data and arange it like so (see bellow) in a new SQL table:
Column A |Column B |Column C | Column D |Column ArrgWTF1 |Column ArrgWTF2 |
Where A&D are from the original SQL table, C & D are pulled from the XML and ArrgWTF1 & 2 are sourced from the '-' delimited vales within the XML.

I am trying to loop through a table which has table metadata and create a:
- 'STORED PROCEDURE'
- This will SELECT all the data in the table and add a hashed column at the end
- Each table has a unique ID

Instead of a cursor would there be a set-based approach to achieving this?
