Extreme Slow SQL Server 2005 And High CPU Usage - Casting Of Values
Feb 20, 2006
Hello sql and .net gurus :-)
I have a problem with my website www.eventguide.it. It's completly developed under .NET 2 and SQL Server 2005 Express. My problem is the folowing:
The server is a Intel 3Ghz HT processor with 1GB Ram. No other page on the running system is a CPU consuming site. We optimized the SQL statements, the code, the caching and many other parts of the website (pooling on SQL access), but the SQL Server uses about 50% to100% of the CPU and about 400MB RAM all the time. The whole site seems to be very, very slow. In fact there are many of SQL operations on every page request, but we cache a lot of them in different ways (page output caching, application caching). So I don't understand we have so much performance problems. Any suggestions for optimised code in general? I read nearly all of the MS .NET performance papers - but real world experience is the missing part :-)
It is better to cast the values of a SQL reader like this
Dim String1 as String = Ctype(DataReader.item(0), String)
Dim Integer1 as Intger = Ctype(DataReader.item(1), Integer)
or like this
Dim String1 as String = DataReader.item(0)
Dim Integer1 as Intger = DataReader.item(1)
Thanks a lot for your help!

I have six stored procedures that I have to run hourly during the day. When I schedule them into separate SQL jobs (they must run concurrently), the percent CPU of Sqlagent90.exe process goes way up, eventually pegging out the overal CPU usage on the server. When I run the six stored procedures concurrently from query windows in SQL Server Management Sudio, the overall CPU usage stays very low.
Is there something about the SQL Server Agent that inherently adds CPU overheard? Thanks in advance ....

My sql query analyzer my windows xp machine is very slow. I run a query in my collegues computer, it takes about 2 mins to finish. This might means the sql server has no problems. On my computer, the same query took about 3 hours to finish.
Can someone give me some suggestion how to fix this problem.

Hi there,
We have a big problem here with merge replication, specifically whenever a schema change occurs. We are replicating schema changes, and triggers/stored procedures. The example is that we changed about 150 stored procedures and about 30 triggers. This is then replicated to the subscriber database (which is also a merge publisher for further remote systems that were offline at the time) over a 10Mb link - hardly low bandwidth. However, the replication process takes about an hour and a half - considering the SQL on the primary server took less than a minute to run this is a big suprise.
We've run a trace to see if we can identitfy what is going on. There seems to be a great number of calls to sp_MSunmarkschemaobject - we are still waiting for a trace to complete to fully analyse this however it looks like it calls this repeatedly for every stored procedure in the database. We are currently re-testing to one of the remote servers with the merge agent set to the slow profile (not much hope that this will alter the poor performance).
This task looks to be excessive - and certainly does not seem to function in a sensible manner. Has anyone else had similar issues or have any suggestions. This is very infuriating as it means that the servers are effectively offline for a minimum of and hour and a half (in fact the remoter servers take over 4 hours !).
Thanks.

Hi,
For the last week, our production SQL server is running very slow and causing the CPU usage to go 80-100 % almost all the time. This causes certain queries to time out. Our application has never timed out before ever. Also, we did not do any updates on our production machine or installed anything recently.
Has anyone of you ever experienced this issue? If yes, then what did you do to resolve it? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help!

I have been having issues with our SQL server for awhile now. It seems to run out of memory every few days and when I look at the memory dump, the MEMORYCLERK_SQLOPTIMIZER seem to take over memory and eventually cause the server to crash.
Here is the SQL verison we are using: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3460.0 (X64) Jul 22 2014 15:22:00 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 (Build 9200: ) (Hypervisor)..It is on a VM on Windows 2012 server. It has 20gb of RAM allocated to it and the MAX Server Memory is set to 16.5gb.
I have seen the MEMORYCLERK_SQLOPTIMIZER grow to about 11gb at the time of the server crash. Why that is happening? What is causing the memoryclerk_sqloptimizer to get so high? I have looked it up and it looks like it has to do with ad hoc requests, but is there something I can do to bring that memory down when it gets so high so that I can prevent a server crash?Do we just need to add more memory or is there a memory leak somewhere?

I have about a 447 MB SQL server 2000 database on a desktop PC acting as a QA server. The hardware specs of the QA box are as follows:
CPU: P4 2.4 GHz
Memory: 1GB
Drives: 80 GB IDE
I recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge 2650 server to act as the staging box. The staging box has
CPU: P4 2.4 GHz
Memory: 2GB
Drives: 40GB SCSI, mirrored
I made a backup of the database on the QA box, and restored it on the staging box. Yet when I run something as simple as a select query (select * from <table>), the less powerful QA box is faster.
I figured maybe the statistics are different on the staging box. I ran dbcc showcontig to make sure the statistics were identical. Also ran RedGate's SQL compare and data compare to make sure everything was identical.
I figured maybe the query optimizer needs to be tweaked. I recreated the indexes and updated statistics on the staging box. The queries actually got slower as a result.
I thought maybe SCSI drives are slower. Tried breaking the mirror on the staging box. No luck. Put the mirror back in place, ran a test where I copied a large folder from one directory to another on the staging box. Repeated the same test with the same data on the QA box. The staging box was more than twice as fast than the QA box.
It doesnt appear to be a problem with the query, adjusting memory in SQL server has not effect, both boxes are using SQL server 2000 SP3, why is the bigger machine running queries hundreds of milliseconds slower than the smaller machine? Any help will be appreciated!

COLOR=Blue]Hi all,
What can be the reason there is a high CPU usage even when there's only 1 database being accessed. As a result the database is really really slow.
CPUperformance usage goes as high as 100% and I can't for the life of me figure out what's causing it. The indexes are being rebuilt 3/4 times a week and I've checked to make sure there aren't any locks or anything.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

We have a live server that has had very high CPU usage in the last few days, therefore the site is extremely slow. There are about 60,000 users per day on the average. It always had high CPU usage, but not as bad as in the last few days, in the 90s, sometimes even reaching a 100.
Any solutions? I've run SQl Profiler to check on queries that have high CPU usage. When I run the same queries on our staging server, they are very quick. For example, the same query can take 1 minute on stage, but 12 minutes on the live site. We do know that this is also related to traffic, during lower traffic times, the same query takes less time, but still never as fast as stage.
Oh yeah, it's SQL Server 2005 and asp code running IIS6 on windows 2003 server.

Hi
I have an sql server with very high usage. The web which is connected to the sql server has approx. 1000 unique visitors every time.
The database is optimized and the site goes really fast now.
But a problem we've had since the beginning is that SQL Server constantly uses 1.8 GB of RAM. Never less, never more.
Do you have any idea on how to decrease the usage of RAM. I am sure that this high usage is necessary.

Anyone aware of anything I can look at to improve performance of my SSIS packages? i basically have two master packages that call about 15 child package tasks each. All the package tasks are called sequentially and all they do is just load flat files into temporary tables and execute a simple stored proc. Each package tasks check to see if a file is there and if so it processes it else it just ends. The packages are scheduled to run every minute to check for files. If I watch the CPU during execution i can see the two instances of DTSEXEC.exe running and consuming about 25-30% of the CPU. The box that this runs on is a Quad processor with 4 GB of ram.
Any ideas on how to improve the performance of this? I have tried playing with the transaction level, but that didn't seem to do much performance wise.
Thanks for the help!

Just built a new DB server. Using SQL2K5Standard 64bit on W2K3Server 64bit. Hardware includes 16GBs memory/dual 4-core procs and many spindles, however we only have a 2GB page file on C:. SQL is set to to usa a maximum of 12GB memory which is way more than it should need. Problem is, we are occasionally seeing very high page file usage. If Task Manager is correct, (which it really can't) I am using 10 and 13.8GB (as listed in PF Usage) But I only have a 2GB page file! Occasionally when simply copying a file from one partition to another, PerfMon shows Pages/sec jump to 10,000. Also see some very high Disk Queueing. This system isn't even in production yet. My main questions are two: 1) some documentation says with SQL2K5-64 bit running on W2K3-64bit I may not even need a page file. Is this correct? 2) What would be causing high usage of the swap file with 16GBs of installed memory? And help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I am trying to find out what could be causing this issue. Why would we be waiting on cpu when its barely being used. Signal waits are varying from 35 to 55% and cpu usage is only at 5% usage. We are using Windows Server 2012 with SQl Server 2012 Standard edition with cpu5. There are 3 instances on the server each with max memory 50gb memory and the server has a total of 190gb memory. The machine is a 12 core machine with hyperthreading enabled.

I know I should probably be posting this in the RS section but I have a Win 2008 R2 server and RS 2012 along with SSIS and Database server installed. I also have SQL 2005 instance with Sql 2005 SSIS running on the server.
I saw that Reporting services was consuming 9gb of ram a few days ago with no published reports. It's just a default install.
So I investigated the settings and the document: ......
I added this section to the reportserver.config file to restrict memory usage
<WorkingSetMaximum>512000</WorkingSetMaximum>
<WorkingSetMinimum>128000</WorkingSetMinimum>
Any example altering the reportserver.config file in your standard build of sql server reporting services?

we had some slow down complaints lately and this query seems to be the culprit almost every single time. The estimated execution plan is a clustered index seek as there is a clustered index on the uidcustomerid column. setting profile statistics on shows that every time it executes it does an index seek.
profiler session showed a huge number of reads for these queries depending on the value being looked up. 1500 through 50000. i set up profile io on and the culprit is lob logical reads. everything else is 0 or very low. in this case lob logical reads is over 1700.
3 of the columns in the select statement are text columns. when i take them out of the query the lob logical reads drops to 0 and goes up incrementally as i add each column back in.
is there anyway to improve the performance without changing data types to varchar(max)?

Hi,
My query "select blah, blah, rank from tablewithscores" will return results that can legitimately hold nulls in the rank column. I want to order on the rank column, but those nulls should appear at the bottom of the list
e.g.
Rank Blah Blah
1 - -
2 - -
3 - -
NULL - -
NULL - -
At present the NULLs are at the top of the list, but I do not want my ranking in descending order. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi,
I have a report in SQL Reporting Services 2005 which calls a stored proc and the report takes a very long time to run and sometimes returns zero records. But when i run the stored proc in query analyzer it takes about 4 seconds!!
I have checked the execution log on the RS using the below sql:
Code Snippet
use ReportServer
Select * from ExecutionLog with (nolock) order by TimeStart DESC
It shows that i have a large amount of time for the dataretrieval (601309ms, about 10mins) and does not return any records most likely because of a query timeout:
TimeDataRetrieval TimeProcessing TimeRendering Source Status ByteCount RowCount
601309 2227 3 1 rsSuccess 4916 0
The weird thing is that when i run it in query analyzer, i get about 400 records in 4 seconds !!
I dont understand what RS is doing to take up so much time like this to retrieve data.
The report is very simple - it basically returns the records straight out into a table.
The only thing I somewhat suspected was a parameter data type conflict between RS and SQL, specifically dates. I have a start and end date parameter in the report - i tried specifying this as date and string to see if it made any difference but it didn't.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have several 2005 servers with "Maximum server memory" set to 214 gig, which I believe is the default at installation time. I am told that this means "use all the memory there is including paging." Well, this is nuts but the servers seem to work fine with this setting no matter how much physical memory they have.
One of our 2005 servers recently started paging like crazy, so I reduced "Maximum server memory" to 6000 and the paging disappeared (server has 8 gig of physical memory) and the server appears happy.
I can not explain why only this one server has this paging issue and the others do not. Should I be setting "Maximum server memory" on all my servers? Are there other considerations which might cause the server to eat-up all the memory? As far as I know no other applications run on this box.
Thanks,
Michael

Dell Power Edge 1800 with 3.00 GHz Xeon Processor 800 FSB, 1 GB of RAM
Dell Power Edge 1600 with 2.80 GHz Xeon Processor 533 FSB, 1 GB of RAM
Combined into one:
Dell Power Edge 2950 Dual Core 1.6 GHz Xeon Woodcrest Processor, 4 GB of RAM
However, the CPU utilization on this new server is maintaining at about 90% with 3.82 GB of RAM used as well. It's a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 edition running SQL Server 2005 SP2 x64. I have searched around Microsoft's website for any information that could be of help to me, but I was unable to locate anything. I was hoping that someone could provide some insight as to why this might be occuring. Or if this is a known issue.
Thanks,

Hi,
We are having a big performance issue at our site. Here is the configuration of the box running SQL Server 2005:
64 bit Windows Enterprise Edition + SP1
Dual CPU, 16GB RAM
RAID 1 and RAID 5 - internal
SQL Server 2005 64-bit Enterprise Edition
With SP2 (CTP from December)
The "Lock Pages in Memory" is set and is being run under the same account that is being used to run SQL Server Services.
We are noticing that under load, the CPU utilization becomes nearly
100%. I have researched this and have come across a couple of
posts that indicate that this issue was fixed in SP2 - example: One
post talked about the hotfix #716 which is also a part of SP2 but even
after the application of that service pack, we are still having this
issue. I haven't tried setting the parameterization option to
forced for the database yet.
Is this a known issue with SP2? If not, what can we look for and
fix in our environment? Please let me know if I can provide more
information.

Is there any way to measure bandwith usage during merge replication between sql server 2005 and sql server mobile 2005 running on a cradled wm5 mobile device.

thnx,

We have an application that we currently run on SQL Server 2000 that works by creating a DTS package that it then executes.
Due to performance reasons, we have been considering switching to 2005, for a few reasons. Can anyone confirm clarify the following?
1) SQL Server 2000 caps RAM usage at 2GB, whereas SQL Server 2005 is only limited by the OS - RAM usage is a big current issue for us, so if upgrading to 2005 would solve this it would help a lot. Can anyone confirm my understanding of this?
2) Would using the legacy DTS in SQL Server 2005 take advantage of this RAM difference, or is it running on the old 2000 engine and only able to use the 2GB?
Thanks for any help.
