Failed Assertion = 'm_activeSdesList.Head () == NULL' (in Combination With Error: 1203)

Jun 6, 2000

On our datawarehouse server we are regularly having a 1203 error, causing the sql-server to hang. We get this message in the errorlog: Failed Assertion = 'm_activeSdesList.Head () == NULL'. In the knowledgebase I found a bug description that is very lookalike to our problem.

Article: Q240853 FIX: Lock Escalation With Parallel Query May Cause 1203 Error And Server Shutdown

*** part of the article ***
SYMPTOMS
If a lock escalation occurs while running a parallel query, it is possible to encounter error message 1203 as follows:

spid7 Process 7 unlocking unowned resource: KEY: 13:117575457:2 (35010560ebcd)
spid7 Process 7 unlocking unowned resource: KEY: 13:117575457:2 (35010560ebcd)
spid7 Error: 1203, Severity: 20, State: 1
spid7 Process ID 7 attempting to unlock unowned resource KEY: 13:117575457:2 (35010560ebcd).
spid7 Error: 1203, Severity: 20, State: 1
spid7 Process ID 7 attempting to unlock unowned resource KEY: 13:117575457:2 (35010560ebcd).

The error message included in the error log probably mentions the same lock resource in several of the error messages.

Once the error is printed, an assertion message similar to the following is also printed:
1999-08-09 13:15:26.79 kernel SQL Server Assertion: File: <proc.c>, line=1866 Failed Assertion = 'm_activeSdesList.Head () == NULL'.
After a dump of the stack for all threads, the server initiates a shutdown of the SQL Server process.
...
*** end ***

You can find the complete article on: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q240/8/53.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

We can't use the workaround, because that would shut out parallelism, which is necessary for the project.

There is a fix, but in the article Microsoft says: "A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.".
You understan,d this is not one of my favorite type of fixes...

Does anyone have already installed the fix mentioned? Had any problems with it, or did it cause some other troubles?

Thx,

Assertion Failed Error While Resizing A Vector In A Plug-in Algorithm

May 1, 2007

I got an Assertion failed error while resizing a vector in a plug-in algorithm.

In order to isolate the problem I created a simple model class in Navigator.h file as shown below:

//========================= begin code =======================

class CStateStats
{
public:
DOUBLE m_dblSum;
DOUBLE m_dblSqrSum;
public:
CStateStats()
{
m_dblSum = 0.0;
m_dblSqrSum = 0.0;
}
};

class CAttStats : public DMHALLOC
{
public:
dmh_vector<CStateStats> vstatestats;
public:
CAttStats() : vstatestats (*this)
{
}
};

//========================= end code =======================

The access to DMHALLOC is provided in that class and in Navigator class as shown below:

//========================= begin code =======================

class ATL_NO_VTABLE NAVIGATOR :

public DMHALLOC,

public CComObjectRootEx<CComMultiThreadModel>,

public CComCoClass<NAVIGATOR, &CLSID_NAVIGATOR>,

public ISupportErrorInfo,

public IDMAlgorithmNavigation

{

public:

NAVIGATOR() : _viAttributeOutput(*this), _vCAttStats(*this)

//========================= end code =======================

I succeded making room for _vCAttStats vector, but when I tried providing room for the vectors of the vector I got an Assertion failed error (file dmhallocator.h Line:56 Expression assert(_dmhalloc._spidmmemoryallocator != NULL)). Please, see the code below, included in NAVIGATOR::GetNodeArrayProperty function:

//========================= begin code =======================

_vCAttStats.resize (2); // <<<<< succeeded here!

// make space for the states

_vCAttStats[0].vstatestats.resize(ulStates); // <<<<<<< assertion failed here!

//========================= end code =======================

I tried using a vector-of-vector approach and I also succeeded.

But I have to use that kind of structure: a vector of class with a vector inside.

I think I must provide a similar approach of vector-of-vector existing in DmhVector.h but I don't know how to do it.

I would apreciate any help.

System Assertion Failed During Restoration

Apr 25, 2008

Hi All,

I am trying to restore sql 2000 database backup on sql 2005. I get below error.

SQL Server Assertion: File: <mdupgrad.cpp>, line = 3342 Failed Assertion = 'f' No object for Index!. This error may be timing-related. If the error persists after rerunning the statement, use DBCC CHECKDB to check the database for structural integrity, or

Error: 928, Severity: 20, State: 1.

During upgrade, database raised exception 3624, severity 20, state 1, address 000000000247E5A1. Use the exception number to determine the cause

Error: 3624, Severity: 20, State: 1.

I feel this could be due to upgrade from sql 2000 to sql 2005.
I could restore other 2000 databases successfully to 2005. However only this particular database is throwing this error.

Can anyone advise on this please.

Thanks in Advance

Kiran

DBCC And Failed Assertion Errors - HELP!

Jul 20, 2005

Hey all -We are running SQL 2000 with ALL available service packs, etc.applied. We just built a brand new database server, which has dual2Ghz XEONs, 2GB memory, and the following disk configuration:RAID 1 array (2 disks) Operating System Windows Server 2003RAID 1 array (2 disks) Database LogsRAID 10 array (4 disks) Database DataDisks are SATA, with a 3Ware hardware RAID controller. The machineSCREAMS.We run 5 databases on this machine. 2 of these are fairly large (byour standards, anyway). The second largest database (and the busiestand most important) is consistently generating consistency errors thatbring many important queries down. These are almost ALWAYS in theform of index corruption on one single table. The corruption does notnormally occur on other tables, although it DOES happen once in awhile - rarely - on one of the other tables), nor does it EVER occuron any other databases on the server.The corruption seems to happen right in the neighborhood of midnightALMOST every day, give or take a few minutes, but does not seemdirectly associated with any of our MANY scheduled database cleanuptasks (believe me, we've tried desperately to find an associationusing SQL profiler). At midnight, our database traffic is fairly low,so it does not seem associated with a high traffic level.We are using the FULL recovery model, with log backups every 15minutes, and full backups daily at 12:15am. However, the corruptionhappens consistently BEFORE 12:15, like between 11:50pm and 12:10am.The most frustrating thing is, the database can go WEEKS without anycorruption at all, and then it'll go 4 or 5 days in a row with thisstrange corruption stuff.************************************************** ***********************Typical query errors when the corruption exists include:************************************************** ***********************SQL Server Assertion: File:<p:sqltdbmsstorengdrsinclude
ecord.inl>, line=1447Failed Assertion = 'm_SizeRec > 0 && m_SizeRec <= MAXDATAROW'.SQL Server Assertion: File: <recbase.cpp>, line=1378Failed Assertion = 'm_offBeginVar < m_SizeRec'.Server: Msg 3624, Level 20, State 1, Line 7Location: recbase.cpp:1374Expression: m_nVars > 0Connection Broken************************************************** ***********************Most of the responses to this type of issue (failed assertions) on thenewgroups appear to point to hardware failures. However, this isbrand new hardware, AND, it seems to us that if this was a hardwareissue, other databases, tables, and indexes would be affectedrandomly. Isn't that a valid assumption (that if it was hardware,particularly the RAID controller, the corruption would not be in sucha predictable place)? What if we moved the physical database files toanother location on the disk? Would/could that help?If anyone could offer some suggestions as to what may be causing thiscorruption, we would be eternally grateful. It is getting to be areal pain in the A*** to run DBCC CHECKDB with REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSSevery day or two (it always seems to solve the problem without dataloss, but still...).Again, thanks in advance for your response.Sincerely,Morgan LeppinkJoin Bytes!

Hi all

I am facing this prob with SSRS.

Problem:

I have a few reports deployed on the report server.

When I click them I get the following error

The reportserver also generates SQLDumper log file and a crash dump file

The report executes fine sometime and sometime gives the error mentioned above.
The reportserver at some point in time stopped doing anything.
I tried to delete those reports created I couldn€™t delete one report.
When I try to delete it takes a long time and says request timeout error.

Then I opened the web.config file of reportserver and report manager and just saved it so that the application reloads. And then it worked fine for few moments. I was also able to delete that report which was not getting deleted before. But after some time I again get the assertion failed error.

I have the same reports deployed in another server where they are working fine.
The database is SQL Server 2005 with SP2
How do it solve this problem

Run Dts Package From External App Gives Assertion Failed Dialog Box

May 16, 2007

Hello,

To quote my honorable colleague who posted some time ago in this forum "If i'd had any hair left, I'd pull it all out".

I am trying to run package from an external .NET app. The package is stored in the SQL server MSDB with protection level to 'Rely on sql server'

The package uses an environment variable for the configuration dtsconfig file.

I use manageddts to load the package from the sql server

LoadFromSqlServer

When I launch my app from the visual studio environment (in debug mode) I get this error message window:

Assertion Failed

at STrace.ReadTraceValues()

at STrace..cctor()

at ...

at ManagedHelper.GetNextManagedInfo(DTs_M...

This message window comes several times, one after the other. I have to click ignore to continue.

When i run this program from the command line , it runs without this message.

I've already put my package load in a separate function with debuggerstepthroug, but to no avail.

<System.Diagnostics.DebuggerStepThrough()> _

Private Function LoadPkg(ByRef app As Application, ByVal PackageName As String) As Package

Return app.LoadFromSqlServer(PackageName, m_SSISServername _

, "myname", "mypassw", Nothing)

End Function

Is there anything that can be done to avoid these warnings?

Assertion Failed Message Loading SSIS Package In Vb.net

Sep 21, 2007

I have SSIS packages created to import .xls files into sql tables. I now have vb.net code within which I am trying to execute individual packages whenever my code notices the .xls files being deposited within a network folder. When I try to run my code I get the error message:

Assertion Failed:Abort=Quit, Retry=Debug, Ignore=Continue
at STrace.ReadTraceValues()
at STrace..cctor()
at STrace.Trace(String strComponentName, String strLine)
at ManagedHelper.GetNextManagedInfo(DTS_Managed_INFO&nextManagedInfo)

here is my code:

Sub RunPackage(ByVal pkgCMD As String)

'

Dim app As New Application

Dim pkg As New Package

Dim pkgResults As DTSExecResult

'Dim pkgevents As IDTSEvents

'

pkg = app.LoadPackage(pkgCMD, Nothing)

pkgResults = pkg.Execute()

The error occurs during the pkg=app.LoadPackage(pkgCMD, Nothing) statement. Any idea of how I determine why the SSIS package will not load thru my vb app? It runs fine if I load the SSIS package in SSBIDS.
Thanks for any help or guidance.

Error 1203

Apr 25, 2000

Hi there,
One of my databases is getting the Following error

Error 1203
Caller of lock manager is incorrectly trying to unlock an unlocked object. spid=%d locktype=%d dbid=%d lockid=%Id.

I ran DBCC statements after I got the server up and running and it didn't come up with any errors. Everything ran ok until the following week when the same problem happened again. Originally we had problems with this server and we disabled write-caching,
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the problem and how to fix it,
Thanks in advance,

Error 1203

Aug 8, 2006

I am running a script on a schedule and I get this error quite often:

Unspecified error occurred on SQL Server. Connection may have been terminated by the server. [SQLSTATE HY000] (Error 0) Process ID ## attempted to unlock a resource it does not own: OBJECT: ## . Retry the transaction, because this error may be caused by a timing condition. If the problem persists, contact the database administrator. [SQLSTATE HY000] (Error 1203)

If I keep rerunning the transaction, it will eventually succeed. I am running SQL Server 2005 with SP1 installed. Does anyone know what this means and what would cause it to fail sometimes and succeed other times?

Thanks

Primary Key On Combination Of Nullable Fields, At Least One Not-null

Jul 23, 2005

I have a case where a table has two candidate primary keys,but either (but not both) may be NULL. I don't want to storea copy of the concatenated ISNULL'ed fields as an additionalcolumn, though that would work if necessary. Instead, I triedthe following (this is a related simplified example, not myreal one):CREATE FUNCTION ApplyActionPK(@IP int = NULL,@DNS varchar(64) = NULL)RETURNS varchar(74) -- NOT NULLASBEGINdeclare @val varchar(74)set @val = str(ISNULL(@IP, 0), 10)set @val = @val + ISNULL(@DNS, '')return @val-- Also tried "return str(ISNULL(@IP, 0), 10)+ISNULL(@DNS, '')"-- Also tried "return ISNULL(STR(@IP, 10), ISNULL(@DNS, ''))"-- ... and other things...ENDGOcreate table ApplyAction(-- An action applies to a computerAct varchar(16) NOT NULL,-- The action to applyIP int NULL,-- The computer IP address, orDNS varchar(64) NULL,-- The DNS name of the computerTarget as dbo.ApplyActionPK(ComputerID, DNS), -- PK value-- Also tried "Target as ISNULL(STR(@IP, 10), ISNULL(@DNS, ''))"CONSTRAINT PK_ApplyAction PRIMARY KEY(Act, Target))SQL Server always complains that the primary key constraint cannot becreated over a nullable field - even though in no case will the 'Target'field be NULL.Please don't explain that I should store an IP address as a string.Though that would suffice for this example, it doesn't solve myactual problem (where there are four nullable fields, two of whichare FKs into other tables).What's the reason for SQL Server deciding that the value is NULLable?What's the usual way of handling such alternate PKs?Clifford Heath.

Error: 1203, Severity: 20, State: 1

Aug 21, 2002

We have a customized package which uses 2 middle layers before it hits the database.
yesterday the sqlserver rebooted all of sudden and I got this error

Process ID 96 attempting to unlock unowned resource KEY: 7:167671645:4 (8d021bb2cdf2)..

Error: 1203, Severity: 20, State: 1

Error 1203
Severity Level 20
Message Text
Process ID %d attempting to unlock unowned resource %.*ls.

Explanation
This error occurs when Microsoft® SQL Server™ is engaged in some activity other than normal post-processing
cleanup and it finds that a particular page it is attempting to unlock is already unlocked. The
underlying cause for this error may be related to structural problems within the affected database. SQL Server manages
the acquisition and release of pages to maintain concurrency control in the multi-user environment. This mechanism is maintained
through the use of various internal lock structures that identify the page and the type of lock present. Locks are acquired
for processing of affected pages and released when the processing is completed.

Action
Execute DBCC CHECKDB against the database in which the object belongs. If DBCC CHECKDB reports no errors, attempt to reestablish the connection and execute the command.

Important If executing DBCC CHECKDB with one of the repair clauses does not correct the index problem, or if you are unsure what effect DBCC CHECKDB with a repair clause has on your data, contact your primary support provider

Can anyone help with this.DBCC checkdb returned without errors.

Login Failed For User '(null)' Error When Opening A SQL Connection

Jan 16, 2005

Hello everyone. I'm very new to asp.net. I've been coding in vb.net for a while now (getting my associates degree in desktop application programming) and my boss wants all of my new applications to be web based now. Well, i decided to take some initiative on this and begin a new project for my department. This is a very small project. So far, everything is coming along alright (i found an eBook that's helped me quite a bit). Everything was cool until yesterday when i tried to connect to our sql server database. I get an error message stating:

Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

Because i'm testing this on my system as well as the remote system which hosts the application, i can see the error message on the remote system. Here is the error it's giving me:

Login Failed For User '(null)' Error When Trying To Use Windows Authentication

Feb 6, 2006

I'm working on an ASP.NET project, and we're attempting to switch from SQL Server authentication to Windows authentication to connect to the database.
It works fine locally when I debug in Visual Studio, but when it hits the web server, I get the error: "Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
IIS has anonymous access disabled, and Integrated Windows Authentication is checked. The web.config file has:
<authentication mode="Windows"/><identity impersonate="true"/>
The database I'm attempting to access is on a different machine than IIS, and the connection string doesn't contain a username or password, and has "Trusted_Connection=Yes", and "Integrated Security=SSPI".
From what I've been able to find online, I'm guessing the problem is due to IIS and SQL Server residing on different machines, but I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any ideas?

SQL Server Assertion ERROR

Feb 5, 2007

We have a browser based application that is doing some updates on the database. This app was earlier built to run on SQL server 2000 and we are in the process of migrating to SQL server 2005. Until now the application was seamlessly working on the new SQL server 2005 database. I got the following error message on the web when an item was clicked on the web that triggered a set of database updated through our app server. This is first time i am seeing anything like this.

---------------------------
Windows Internet Explorer
---------------------------
Unable to delete the selected items. Warning: Fatal error 3624 occurred at Feb 5 2007 2:34PM. Note the error and time, and contact your system administrator.

A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

Location: IndexRowScanner.cpp:370
Expression: m_sizeOfBuffer > currentOffset + colLen
SPID: 54
Process ID: 2712
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

In the beginnning we thought it may be some thing in the app server or the CLR. But when I checked the process ID in the task manager it turned out to be SQL server 2005 process. the SPID was the application servers connection to the database.

This is what I got when i ran the profiler.

SQL Server Assertion: File: <IndexRowScanner.cpp>, line=370 Failed Assertion = 'm_sizeOfBuffer > currentOffset + colLen'. This error may be timing-related. If the error persists after rerunning the statement, use DBCC CHECKDB to check
the database for structural integrity, or restart the server to ensure in-memory data structures are not corrupted.

Warning: Fatal error 3624 occurred at Feb 5 2007 3:00PM. Note the error and time, and contact your system administrator.

Periodic SQL Server Assertion Error

Mar 21, 2007

Hello,

Since we started using another sales program (1C Enterprise), SQL Server started "crashing" (connection between our program and SQL Server breaks)
with this assertion error:
Event ID: 17066
SQL Server Assertion: File: <"xrange.cpp">, line=399 Failed Assertion = '0 == pxteRangeHrow->m_pxteFetch'. This error may be timing-related. If the error persists after rerunning the statement, use DBCC CHECKDB to check the database for structural integrity, or restart the server to ensure in-memory data structures are not corrupted.

After this error DBCC CHECKDB doesn't find any priblems.

I can't find what exactly causes it, sometimes we get it only once a week, but today I got it four times in a row.

We had the same error on all versions of SQL Server 2005, SQL Server SP1, SQL Server SP1+Hot fixes, etc.

Login Failed For User '(null)'.

Aug 1, 2007

 I have an issue dealing with connectivity between the client and Sql Server Services or Sql Authentication. I keep receiving this type of error message:Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
I am sure my connection string is correct within my web config file, I have something like this:Data Source=myServerAddress;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;Integrated Security=SSPI;
The reason why I think the connection string is correct is because I have a server where my asp.net application is stored and used, this server is called server1. Server1 is connected to MS-SQL server that is installed and used on server2. When I run my application from server1 everything is perfect, nothing goes wrong, but when I run the application from my client or local machine I get the error message saying not associated with a trusted site.
Now I have the web config set to <identity impersonate="true"> that will allow windows Authentication, and I set the permissions within the database to use NT AUTHORITY NETWORK SERVICE as a user, plus my own network credentials are set within user on the database,  just so I could troubleshoot the problem. But I still get the error message not associated with a trusted site.
Just to recap my problem, I can see the data when I run the application in Server1, but I can't see the data when I run the application from my local machine. http://server1/MyApplication.aspx <-- this is an example of the url that I enter on my local machine to acces the application. Plus I have full acces to server1, and other application are running just fine from this server.
I am using visual studio 2005, but using sql 2000, with the latest service pack for windows XP pro.

thanks,
xyz789

Login Failed For User Null

May 17, 1999

SQL7 server is configured to use both SQL and NT authentication. Periodically, NT authenticated users get the error "Login failed for user '(null'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
Repeating the login will eventually end in success.
Microsoft article Q216848 indicates this has something to do with the version of MDAC.

We have not changed the version of MDAC on the server, but checked it and the versions are as the article states (MDAC 2.1 & SQL Driver 3.70.623).

We had a newer version on the client, but went back to the version above that came on the SQL7 CD with no luck.

Any ideas, suggestions, or similar problem experienced?

Thanks in advance.

Null User Login Failed

Dec 21, 2006

I'm new to Crystal Reports and ASP and I'm sure i'm missing something simple here.

I've got a SQL server database, A Crystal Report, a VB application and an ASP Application

In the VB app i call the crystal report and log on to the database with the intergrated security

However in the ASP app i try the same and it has me log on as a null user.

what have i forgotten to do that will let the intergrated security work between SQL Server and ASP

Login Failed For User '(null)'.

Mar 6, 2007

I recieved this error in my logs:

Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

It appeared nearly 20 times, then about 30 minutes after the first occurence, I noticed in my Event Viewer this error:

The registration of DNS name XXX.XXX.XXX.XX.in-addr.arpa. for network name resource 'SQL Network Name(SQLServer)' failed for the following reason:

DNS operation refused.

After that I began recieving hundreds of errors like this one:

Login failed for user 'SQL user'. Only administrators may connect at this time.

I was unable to connect to the server to see what was going on so I had to failover the server. That's why my troubleshooting is limited to error logs. After the failover, everything came up fine with no more errors. Has anyone ever encountered this before?

BTW, This is a SQL 2000 Cluster on Windows 2000.

Login Failed For User '(null)'

Jan 17, 2007

Hi,

I am using a Third Party software which depends on my SQL Server 2000 for storing data. When I use Windows Security in my Third Party software, I get the following message in the event viewer of my SQL Server 2000.

Description:

18452:
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with trusted SQL Server connection.

When I user SA, I do not get the above error.

Any clarifications on the possibilites for getting the error is appreciated.
Also let me know if we can overcome the error without using SA.

I tried the article in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/840219. But it didn't make a difference.
