Reinstall SQL Server 2005 Express

Apr 18, 2008

Since there is not a method to uninstall SP2 for SQL Server 2005 Express, it is recommended to completely uninstall and then reinstall.  I have backed up all databases as well as generated a script to recover username/passwords, is there anything else I should be taking into consideration?

SQL Server 2005 Express Won't Reinstall

Nov 1, 2007

I had SQL Server 2005 Express installed on my computer, but was having problems with it interacting with Visual c++ 2005 Express Edition. I uninstalled both items, but now cannot get SQL Server to reinstall. Everything works fine until the installation gets to the "SQL Server Database Services" portion. At that point, I get a failure stating, "The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information see the SQL Server Books Online topics, 'How To: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files' and 'Starting SQL Server Manually'." Behind this modal dialog box, in the install window, it seems to have stopped at "Running action to shutdown instance(Run As Normal User) RANU instance shutdown in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS"I have tried everything I can find online about this, including use of the Windows Install Clean Up, Aaron Stebner's blog about how to remove a beta version (http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/12/08/501885.aspx), Ttools, and the Visual Studio Uninstall program. I have manually deleted the folder for SQL Server from my Program Files folder, I have deleted all mention of the program from my registry, and yet I still cannot get the darned thing to reinstall.
My computer is a Pentium Duo-Core 2 6600, running at 2.4 GHz, with 2GB RAM, 129GB of 279GB hard drive space free
, with an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS video card. As I say, I had the program running, it just won't reinstall. I am logged on as the one and only user, and I have Administrator priveleges. There have been no changes to the PC aside from removing and trying to reinstall the C++ and SQL Server programs. Can anyone give guidance as to what the heck is going on and what to do?? The haed and tail of my error log is below. I am stuck. Thank you.

Regards,

Andy

Can't Reinstall Sql Server 2005 Express

Oct 30, 2007

Hi I installed SQL server 2005 Express and it was successfully set up but I kept on getting error 26 when I try to connect to a database, so I remove all SQL programs from the control panel and reinstall SQL server 2005, but this time the set up stopped halfway saying "cannot start server". How can I successfully reinstall SQL server 2005 express?

Removing SQL 2005 Express Service

Jan 18, 2008

I read on MSDN how to manually uninstall the instance of SQL server 2005 express, however i am not sure that it will remove the service. The reason i need to do this is that an application i have installed SQL Server 2005, and also QPulse5 SQL Server. I have two instances and it is giving me compile issues which i believe is related to having both services. I did add/remove programs and reinstalled just SQL Server 2005 and recieved error message saying that the service failed to start. The whole problem of this occured when we ran DCPromo with SQL installed. After we did we relized you could not promote with SQL Server. I understand that it is not recommended running SQL Server on a DC, however we did not have a choice. I am hoping someone here may have a solution for this. If there is any other information you need just let me know. Thanks

Moving Back To MSDE 2000 After Removing SQLServer 2005 Express

Sep 18, 2007

Apparently you cannot go backwards. Once 2005 Express is installed, even removing it does not allow you to setup MSDE 2000 again. So there is no "trying it out" option.

Unfortunately, our software does not use 2005 Express. I tried it out, and now have a useless testing workstation that can't have MSDE 2000 installed again.

Any ideas on how to break the chain here are welcome.

But SQL Server Database Services fails with this message:

The first time I installed Express the flow of setup ended well without any message. How to act?

How Can I Connect To Sqlserver Express Manually When I Use Text Boxed

Feb 27, 2006

hi guys,
i am very happy that i found this forum which discuss ASP.net.i am new to ASP.net 2.0 and some need serious help. when i debug my application and try to insert data an error occur saying:"Cannot open database "ecb" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'HOME-USERuser'."the code that i have used to submit data is as follow:Imports System.Data.SqlClient...  Protected Sub btnSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSubmit.Click      Dim objConn As SqlConnection      Dim objCmd As SqlCommand
objconn = New SqlConnection("data source= localhostsqlexpress; initial catalog =ecb; persist security info =true; trusted_connection=true")
objCmd = New SqlCommand("INSERT INTO staff (firstname, surname) VALUES (@firstname, @surname,)", objConn)objCmd.Parameters.Add("@FirstName", Data.SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = txtFirstName.TextobjCmd.Parameters.Add("@Surname", Data.SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = txtSurname.TextobjConn.Open()objCmd.ExecuteNonQuery()objConn.Close()
i also used this data connection but didn't help: objconn = New SqlConnection("Server=localhost; Database=ecb;user ID='  ';Password='  ' ") when i use this data
connection i get this message: Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
as far as i can remember i have used windows authentication when creating my database in sql server 200 express edition.
the funny thing is that when i use datagrid wizard or dataform the connection is fine ( i mean is automatically done for me but i don't know when i like to do it manually does not work).can anyone help? thank you in advanced

Should The SQL Server Express Service Start Automatically Or Manually?

May 13, 2008

Hello all,

We are deploying an application using SQL Server Express to a wide variety of desktop and laptop machines. We are currently trying to decide whether we should install the SQL Server instance service to start automatically at startup or not. In the latter case, our application would start and stop the service.

Starting automatically will make our app load more quickly, which is important to our users. However, our support team is concerned that leaving the service running will leave our databases vulnerable to becoming "suspect" if, for example, a laptop user's battery dies suddenly. Of course this will always be a problem if the app is running, but our support team believes that having the service running all the time will increase the chances of this happening. One reason for their concern is that an older version of the software used MSDE which was running all the time, and they saw a good number of suspect database issues.

What is the best practice for leaving the service running, especially when there are a lot of laptop users?

Thanks,
Ben

Apr 2, 2007

When i try to install, the filed are extracted and then i get this error message:

SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the Setup summery log file in %ProgramFiles%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt

I open the file and this is all i get:

==============================
OS Version : Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Time : Mon Apr 02 15:31:10 2007

I looked in this forum at others peoples threads and it seems as if they all have a lot larger Summary.txt file. I never had any other verson of SQL Server installed on this computer and i just uninstalled .net 2.0 framework and reinstalled it.

My computer runs Windows XP Pro with SP 2, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ 2.20 GHz, 1.00GB of RAM.

Anyone have any clue why the installation wont even start?

Remote Connection To 2005 Express: Login Failed?

Feb 9, 2006

I followed the steps outlined in a blog I found to setup SS2005 express for remote connections. Everything appeared to go smooth until I actually tried to logon ;)

I have Sql Server 2005 Express installed on my WinXP PRO machine at home (no domain). I have opened the ports on the firewall, etc.

When I try and login from the SQLCMD command line tool I get a Login Failed error. Here is the connection string that I'm trying to use:
SQLCMD -S **.***.**.*SQLEXPRESS -U Steve -P MyPassword

The error:
Login failed for user 'Steve'.

When I use Management Studio Express on the same machine running Sql Server, it shows the User name: NEVERSTILLSteve

'NEVERSTILL' is the name of my computer.

If I try and use that same username with a remote connection I get the same error.

I have googled for the error and msg code, but nothing fitting my situation is coming up.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

Set Up Failed SQL Native Client &&<sqlncli.msi&&> - SQL 2005 Express

Dec 18, 2007

I have .NET Framework 2.0 and Visual studio 2005 installed on my machine. I also have SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition installed with Service Pack 4.

When I try to install SQL Server 2005 express, I get an error when the setup tries to install SQL Native Client. I have read many forums, but couldnt find a resolution. I can not see SQL Native Client in my Add Remove Programs either.

I tried to unzip the SQLEXPR.exe into a temp folder and when I right click sqlncli.msi and say Repair or Uninstall. It says "This action is valid for products that are currently installed."

When i try to run the sqlncli.msi file ..i get an error message saying "Installation of Microsoft SQL Server Native Client failed because a higher version already exisits on the machine. To proceed uninstall the higher version and then run Microsoft SQL Server Native Client Setup"

Please help as I am unable to install SQL Server 2005 Express....
SQL Server Native Client -- Set up failed
SQL VSS Writer -- Set up failed
Database Services -- Set up failed

Thank you in advance

Unable To Reinstall SQL Server 2005

Aug 3, 2006

Previously, I have installed SQL 2005 developer edition simplyfied chinese
successfully. But yesterday, I tried to install mobile client software
factory. The installation process create a database as following:
Create DATABASE [AdventureWorksMobileStaging] ON PRIMARY
( NAME = N'AdventureWorksMobileStaging', FILENAME = N'C:GotDotNetMCSF_728ReferenceImplementationsAdventureWorksToGoDBScriptsAdventureWorksMobileStaging.mdf' , SIZE = 195584KB , MAXSIZE = UNLIMITED, FILEGROWTH = 1024KB )
( NAME = N'AdventureWorksMobileStaging_log', FILENAME = N'C:GotDotNetMCSF_728ReferenceImplementationsAdventureWorksToGoDBScriptsAdventureWorksMobileStaging_log.ldf' , SIZE = 265344KB , MAXSIZE = 2048GB , FILEGROWTH = 10%)
But today, when I start my notebook, SQL server could not be started.

Then I uninstalled the SQL instance by start->control panel->uninstall...The uninstall
process seems OK. Note that I only uninstalled the instance. Then I tried to reinstall
SQL 2005. However it was reported a Performance Monitor Counter registry key mismatch
error occures. I tried to fix it but failed. The problem is as following:

1, The installation process report a warning of low memory.
My notebook has 512M memory. I have reinstalled SQL 2005 once successfully. At that
time, the warning also shows, but it seems that this warning does not affect installation.

2, User type problem.
The OS of my notebook is XP professional, which is upgraded from XP home edition.
I login it using a domain user such as: "my company's domainmyaccount". I found it
curiously that although I assign myaccount as an Administrator, it will automaticly
changed to "SQL$...." account. I don't know why and when the account property is
changed. But everytime, when I found, I will assign myaccount as an Administrator
back.

3, Performance Monitor Counter registry key problem.
To fix the problem, I firstly tried to run lodctr.exe in cmd window but failed.
When I cd to c:windowssystem32 dir, I can ran lodctr.exe correctly.
I check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPerflib,
the result is:
"Last Counter"=dword:0000149c (11128)
"Last Help"=dword:0000149d (11129)
Then I check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPerflib09
and 004, the result is confusing. I can find counter and help key,but both keys contains
really a lot of stuff as:
(1) first page of Counter key:
1
1847
2
System
4
Memory
6
% Processor Time
10
File Read Operations/sec
12
(2) first page of Help key:
3
The System performance object consists of counters that apply to more than one instance of a component processors on the computer.
5
The Memory performance object consists of counters that describe the behavior of physical and virtual memory on the computer. Physical memory is the amount of random access memory on the computer. Virtual memory consists of the space in physical memory and on disk. Many of the memory counters monitor paging, which is the movement of pages of code and data between disk and physical memory. Excessive paging, a symptom of a memory shortage, can cause delays which interfere with all system processes.
7
% Processor Time is the percentage of elapsed time that the processor spends to execute a non-Idle thread. It is calculated by measuring the duration of the idle thread is active in the sample interval, and subtracting that time from interval duration. (Each processor has an idle thread that consumes cycles when no other threads are ready to run). This counter is the primary indicator of processor activity, and displays the average percentage of busy time observed during the sample interval. It is calculated by monitoring the time that the service is inactive, and subtracting that value from 100%.
9
% Total DPC Time is the average percentage of time that all processors spend receiving and servicing deferred procedure calls (DPCs). (DPCs are interrupts that run at a lower priority than the standard interrupts). It is the sum of Processor: % DPC Time for all processors on the computer, divided by the number of processors. System: % Total DPC Time is a component of System: % Total Privileged Time because DPCs are executed in privileged mode. DPCs are counted separately and are not a component of the interrupt count. This counter displays the average busy time as a percentage of the sample time.
11
File Read Operations/sec is the combined rate of file system read requests to all devices on the computer, including requests to read from the file system cache. It is measured in numbers of reads. This counter displays the difference between the values observed in the last two samples, divided by the duration of the sample interval.

I could not find the maximum value of the Counter key and help key, so I could not repair
Last Counter and Last Help key as discribed at SQL 2005 help. Which item correspond to
maximum value of the Counter key and help key?

I tried to correct Last Counter and Help key as:
"Last Counter"=dword:0000149c (5276)
"Last Help"=dword:0000149d (5277)
But it also doesn't work.

Sql Server 2005 - Cannot Reinstall/uninstall

Apr 10, 2008

Hi,

I had to do a system restore to solve some other issues now my SQL Server 2005 doesnt work (SQL Server 2000 on the same machine [diffrent instance] does). I have tried to uninstall with add/remove programs but the instance doesnt appear there. I have tried to use the 'ARPWrapper.exe /Remove' command as described in KB909967 wich also fails.
I have also tried to reinstall with no sucess. I also tried uninstalling SQL2000 and removing as many references as I could find, again now joy.

Is there a script somewhere to remove everything (although I would like to try and keep the SQL2000 instance)?

Can't Uninstall Or Reinstall SQL Server 2005 Dev

Nov 11, 2006

Long story short: Installed SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition along with Visual Studio 2005. Everything worked as it should.

Then there was a problem installing .NET Framework 2.0 Security Update. Fixed that by uninstall and reinstall of .NET Framework 2.0.

Now SQL Server does not work. So I figured uninstall/reinstall. Only problem is that it WILL NOT uninstall. I have tried to uninstall manually per KB article (9009967). That doesn't work either.

The error info that I'm geting is:

LinkID: 20476

I get the same data during setup or uninstall. Neither of which completes.

Needless to say this is driving me nuts. I'm trying to learn VB.NET programming and many of the examples use SQL Server.

SQLRUN_SQL.MSI Is Not Valid For Service Pack 1 SQL 2005 Command Line REINSTALL

Jun 28, 2006

Hello,

I have recently tried to run this command line utility for SQL Server 2005 -

"start /wait sqlfodersetup.exe /qb INSTANCENAME=myinstance REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=1 SAPWD=[password] SQLCOLLATION=SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AI"

Unfortunately I recived an error stating the "Installation package for the product SQL Server 2005 (64bit) cannto be found. Please locate a valid SQLRUN_SQL.MSI". Which I couldn't find anywhere., so....

I created a fresh instance on my 2005 server, held back on installing SP1, and ran the command line again. This time it worked.

My best guess is that the installation scripts check the version header on the MSI file during install and display a compatibilty error thus halting the install.

My question is, has anyone seen, overcome this problem. I can't believe that this is a bug like error as there would be posts about it all over the interweb.... which there isn't.

Any thoughts.

Mike.

(p.s) I know that I shouldn't really try to amend the collation on a sql server, but I have little choice at the moment :-(

RESOLVED RESOLVED An Attempt To Attach An Auto-named Database For File &&<file String&&> Failed &&>&&>&&> But ONLY After SSE Reinstall

Sep 16, 2007

RESOLVED RESOLVED RESOLVED

DOH! When I rebuilt the OS, I changed the data partition ID's, and didn't remember to change them in the connetion strings

Not great, but better than continuing to bang head against wall.

Would like to say to MS appreciators that the VS2005 reinstall actually went quite well, considering.

===========================================================================

I built an app, works fine. Had the development environment working fine (VS2005 (SP0) and SQL Server Express). It had been stable for months, no problem.

Then I had to reinstall XP Pro...(finally threw too many conflicting programs into it, I guess...)

I managed to get VS2005 reinstalled ok. However, when I opened and compiled my existing app in VS2005, using Cassini, I got the dreaded error:

An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <file string> failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I also get this error for the compiled copy of the app on the same machine, running on IIS. (Where it also previously worked fine).

The Connection strings are all of the form

connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=(specific file string).MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

I appreciate that there are zillions of posts on this issue. I'm hoping that someone might know why this should happen in this particular case.

The thing that's different about this case is that the app was working fine; I have the app deployed on a demo machine and also on a remote server as well as on the development machine.

The only thing that changed is that there was this fresh install of SQL Server Express.

I tried using >> sp_configure user instances enabled','1';RECONFIGURE <<< in SSMSEE, which took, but didn't help.

So something is different in SSE. Since the app is stable everywhere else, I REALLY don't want to go through and adjust the connection strings...MUCH better to figure out what SSE needs to be happy with the existing connection strings...as it was before.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

EDIT----TRIED SOME THINGS:

Changed folder and file permissions to allow ASPNET full access to the .mdf's and log files (though never had to do this before on the development machine.) No change...

Can see the table contents within the .mdf through SSMSE, and also through Server Explorer in VS2005.

So because the problem happens with both IIS and Cassini, I'm assuming it's got to be an issue between ASPNET and SSE.

EDIT --- TRIED SOME MORE THINGS:

I dimly remember that when I had this problem before, it was that the error message was too "dumb". It wasn't my file that had the permissions problems, it was that the SSE System Databases had to have permissions with respect to ASPNET.

I tried to set that up but I'm a complete newb on this area, so I don't know if I did it right. In SSMSE I created a Login for MyComputer/ASPNET, and gave it all permissions and roles, and then made it an owner for the four system databases...but no joy.

Any pointers on this last piece would be helpful.

EDIT - MORE INFO

The error details

[SqlException (0x80131904): An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <filestring>.MDF failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.]

Removing SQL Express Instances

Sep 4, 2007

Using SQL Express, UNDER COMPUTER management, SQL Server Configuraqtion Manager, SQL Server 2005 Network configuration Ihave the following listed instances

CSOLUTION - not listed under services

MSSQLSERVER - Disabled

SQLEXPRESS - Diaabled

SQLTEST - Disabled

SQLEXPRESSDATA - used by VB05 program

Questions

a) how do I delete all the instancces I do not use. In MSDE, each instance could be removed via the add/remove programs, but I don't see how to remove it under express

b) since SQLEXPRESS is the default for an SQL Express installation, I would like for the VBB05 program to use that instance; how do I do that?

Any help would be appreciated.
